One of the most commonly requested redux reviews is for the Hershey's Payday - one of the lowest ever rated products in ChocolateMission history (See below). In my embarrassing review below (give me a break it was one of my first :D ) I rendered the bar flavourless and devoid of flavour .... I was sure looking forward to reuniting myself with this one folks (/end of sarcasm).
So in the name of thorough research I ate the bar AmericanSoda sent across. Well what can I say!? I didn't think it was as bad as last time I tried it, but suffice to say it still didn't do much for me. Compared to previous, the peanuts were definitely more flavoursome, though I still found the caramel taffy at the centre to be ridiculously bland. Looking at the scoring chart of last I was way too harsh on the presentation and textural elements so I have amended my scoring of those criteria to provide a more realistic score. That doesn't however mean I will change my jurisdiction :D personally I still think this is a bar severely lacking depth in the taste, department and it wouldn't be one I would recommend to anyone. Hershey's make some great confectionery bars - the Payday isn't one of them :D

Overall this was a big disappointment to me and it wont be a bar I will ever order again. The bar was devoid of flavour and packed full of calories and fat. It is now the holder of the title of worst bar on Chocolate Mission

Lol I was very tempted to try one of these, I saw one on ebay today, but having read your review I think I'll pass! It said it had fudge in the middle but it doesn't sound as if that was very evident. Ah well. It's a nice idea but since it doesn't sound very well implemented I won't bother buying it!
So at the end of the day do you think the idea of this one is what is at fault or do you think it is more how hersheys did it? Im still not getting that bit from your review.

Every make and brand has its bad bars that aren't popular. Its just for Hershey it would appear that they have more than the avergae one or two lmao :-) :-) :)
Thank you for doing this again Jim. I was actually one of the people that requested you look back at a few of your older ones so im pleased your leading with some of the ones that probably deserve a 2nd shot more so than some of the others. I think we can safely put it to bed now that the Hershey Payday isn't a favourite of yours lol.

By the looks of it the closest thing we would have to one of these here in the UK is either a Snickers (just without the chocolate) or the good ol Mr Tom bar. If we think of it in the context of the Mr tom then I doubt it would do very well over here as not even they seem to be around much anymore. The only time I see the Mr toms is down at my local market being sold on by cheapo market sellers.
I'm not even going to tell you what I think this looks like :P Its not pretty is it.
Great photos Jim. I like you doing the reviews again for products you did three years ago. I think your tastes/expectations of things would have changed loads since then so it makes sense you giving them a second look at. Once thing I would like to see done again is the mint three musketeers. I saw your review of the normal one the other week and you still rated it very highly. It would be cool just seeing if you feel the same about that one too.

I don't like your description of how it tastes much. I don't like the idea of flavourless caramel, thats so uncool dude.
How can you make peanuts tasteless? They must have to be old or something because that is quite a talent. I would say they are one of the most flavoursome type of nuts you get. Its not like they are macadamias or anything - now they taste of nothing.

Whats your prediction for tonight then boyo? I got England down for a 3-0 victory and easy progression. I would love to see Andy Carroll given a chance upfront but I don't think jim and Rooney would be the best mix, lol together they could be a little volatile.
Nice to see you continue the american trend this week. You could argue that the one on monday was american given the Kraft influence on that.

What would we do without you Jim :) I love peanuts and the such so I probably would have tried this at some point. Is it a popular bar of theirs? It isn't one I had seen or heard of before tbh with you.
Well I can't argue against you too much on this one. I would give the caramel nougat a little more credit than you did, but yes in the grand scheme of things I would call it one of Hersheys' poorer efforts.
Did you ever try the avalanche version jim? That a chocolatey coating on it and I liked it tons more than I did just this plain version. I doubt it will move the needle too much but it could be worth a try if you get a chance.
Well if this managed to get another point and a half on its score does that mean others might be able to do so?
Some of the bigger scoring bars that you thought weren't quite there might now be up there at the top.

This just sounds horrible. The fact that american soda also sell at over a quid a bar makes it even more off putting. I don't see a situation where I ever have a Hersheys payday now =)
These redone reviews are a good idea if you keep them to just ones where you think there is a decent chance you mind could be changed. If you think there is a good chance (or already know!!) that the score wont change then I don't think its worth it taking up a whole review day.
I don't sign up to the sweet and salty peanuts fetish that some people have. I prefer my sweet food being sweet and my savoury food being savoury. I've never felt that a mixture of the two is desireable, it just doesn't do it for me.
This review has given me a strange craving for a mr tom now. Lol I used to buy them from time to time but they are one of those things I never see anymore.

If im not mistaken this still makes it one of the lowest ever right? There can't be too much difference between a 2 and a 4 lol. At the end of the day its still significantly worse than the average bar on here.
Im sure the payday crew are quite happy with this. Its one thing getting a bad review but its another being branded worst of all time. Lol that kinda makes you stick out from the rest a little. At least they can now hide amongst all the other crappy bars you have tried.

You mark of it is way to high. It has changed so much from three years ago. I think the score on it would fall dramatically.

It's one thing trying something and not liking it but its a whole new level you trying something, not liking and then trying it again just to make sure :) lol you wouldn't ever get me doing that for something I had previously decided I didn't like. I'm a one chance only kinda guy.
This shouldn't have qualified for a review in the first place. It doesn't have any chocolate in it.
If you are in the mood for doing old reviews again Jim can I ask you do a re-run of the Hotel Chocolat 85%. I think we need to do a double check to make sure you still rate it as the best chocolate in the world. I'm yet to try it myself yet. I think it would just be too strong for me. The Hershey Payday needs to sort itself out. I see it did a little better this time around but its still not any where close to geting an average score.

I dont think I have ever heard of peanuts being flavourless b4. They should be one of the more distinct tasting nuts there are.

Well at least now we can see that bar photographed in all its awful glory. PS Don't knock the old posts, a lot of them are my favorites.
I've got to vehemently disagree on this one. Sure, it's not chocolate and I accept that makes it lose points in your book, but it is still an outstanding bar. Peanuts and caramel are a great combination and this bar is the personification of that.

Considering the number of requests I got to review this again Im surprised at the negative sentiment that is still coming out about this one. Perhaps when the review is left to 'breath' a little longer then some more Payday fans will emerge.
This is a bar that has to have some fans or it wouldn't have lasted as long as it has.

This reminds me of one of those protein bars I used to eat when I was getting welll in to my gym work. Those promax bars never used to taste great but at least they used to taste of something unlike the sound of this lol.

The person who said just keep these 2nd looks at just the ones where you think they can credibly change was totally right. If you doubt that anything is going to change with a second chance then I would also discourage you from doing these. If you are just updating the pictures you could always just do it and then tell us about it in one of the news posts you do at the weekends!? Its just an idea.

I think you can say this isn't a bar for everyone. I can envisage peanut butter liking it (except jim it seemslol) but anyone who doesn't like nuts wont even have it on their radar. Unfortunately i slot in to the latter group of people lol.
