January 18th: Galaxy Caramel

Kcal 232 Fat 11.6g Carbs 29.6g

After reading a lot of good things about this bar I was expecting a good show - especially considering its nearest rival the Cadbury Caramel had already score 9.4 out of 10 on the ChocolateMission leader board.

For some reason I found tracking down this bar really hard and I had to purchase it from London Victoria station. **Update during 2008 there were some distribution issues on this bar but these are now solved. The bar came in a 48.0g size that was split in to 6 blocks - it divided up nice and easily.

The Chocolate of course being
galaxy was extra creamy and melted superbly in the mouth into a nice soft, thick liquid. The caramel was similarly amazing and tasted of more than just artificial sweet goo you get in most caramel bars. It was rich tasting and buttery and left a longing butterscotch note in the mouth ... simply delicious. The combination of both the chocolate and caramel was perfect with one not out doing the other. I felt the bar was also really quite substantial at 52.0g (**UPDATE - now only 48.0g boo!!) though frankly I reckon I could eat this endlessly given the enjoyment I get from it.

Overall this is up there with the Cadbury Dairy Milk with Caramel and is my joint favourite so far in the Chocolate Mission!! I honestly can't pull the two apart so I will leave that for all you readers to do below in the comments box below. If you are a milk chocolate and caramel lover you simply can't look past this bar as one of the best mass produced options out there on the market. It is fantastic in almost every sense.
9.4 out of 10

The best caramel bar on the UK market.

Yeah this easily eclipses the Cadbury's Caramel.

Did you really have trouble finding one? They're in every shop up here (Lincolnshire).

Im not sure guys - I dont personally have any preference between Cadburys and Galaxy Chocolate at the momment and to be honest the caramel in each bar are equally as nice. so for the minute they are tied.

Rog- yeh I still to this point have difficulty finding them round near I live - its very odd as this bar should be in really high distribution. Maybe they have stocking issues 'dooooown south' :D

I had a weird 'thing' about this bar for years - I loved Cadbury's Caramels and Galaxy Chocolate yet was convinced this wouldn't be nice. I was wrong! I do prefer the cadbury's version though (and yet I prefer Galaxy over Dairy Milk in general).

Saz - sounds like you were missing out for a awhile then...this is truly awesome this bar. Worthy of its current joint lead for sure.

Love this bar to pieces!!! Only flaw is it's quite sickening after a couple of pieces, but still a well deserved score!

I'm dreaming of a Galaxy Mint one day. Or even more unrealistic, a Galaxy Marshmallow! bliss!

Hutchy Myself I think the one bar is just the right amount...anymore and your right it could get a little sickly.

Galaxy Mint you say!? Could be intresting none the less - who knows stanger things have happened!

Thanks
Jim

hey jim

yes im also a fan of this, there seems to be plenty around so its odd you have probs gettin hold of them lol

i like both this and cadburys caramel, might perhaps but this off the shelf more so than cadburys but that may be because we sometimes buy the multipacks or big bars of the cadburys which you cant get with galaxy. also ive known the cadbury caramel alot longer than the galaxy lol

cheers

Alan it was odd at the time I couldn't find a Galaxy Caramel for love nor money! Maybe there were some distribution issues :S who knows!!

Personally I dont have a fave out of the Cadbury/Galaxy caramel bars...both are absolutely stunning IMO.

Thanks
Jim

Galaxy caramel is really yummy but they only seem to do it in the small bars.. they need to do a bigger version!!

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Roisin that is a great point I don't think they have ever done it in anything larger than the standard sized bar!! There is definitely potential for a bigger sized bar!!

Thanks
Jim

My favourite chocolate bar! absolutely incredible, I am a bit of chef and have been searching for the caramel recipe for years, no luck so far. I could eat it all day if it were not for the colossal amount of calories and fat :(

I love your enthusiasm for the blog and I love hearing your opinions ... but please man I don't need the 'play by play' process :)

I still can't pick a favourite between the CDM caramel and the Galaxy one ... each time I have either I just cant get enough! So for the minute they stay tied!!

Cheers man!

So I finally tried this and the simple bar yesterday. I think I've said before I love Galaxy chocolate, but here we have it only as chocolate coating for the ice-cream. Well, yesterday I bought the actual chocolates (even though smaller versions) in a Christmas bag. And not only these two, a lot of other stuff as well (Snickers, Mars, Twix, Bounty, Milky Way, Maltesers). But I bought the bag just for the Galaxy ones... because they are the only ones that aren't available here as normal bars.

I wasn't disappointed by the Galaxy ones. The chocolate is just as lovely as it is when acting as ice-cream coating. And, in the caramel one, the caramel feels exactly as I like caramel to feel. The caramel taste can get a little too much for me at the end, even though it's very nice... so, overall, I like the simple one better.

But these two and the Maltesers are still the only things in that bag I like. I can't stand the nougat or the kind of caramel in Snickers or Mars. And I cannot stand peanuts in general. Twix, Bounty and Milky Way aren't my thing either... even though I don't dislike them that much.

Have you seen the new large size bars yet Jim? I haven't come across them yet but it's taken them a long time lol I'm intrigued to see how they fitted caramel into those small new wavy shaped blocks!

It sounds like you found yourself a pack of 'Celebrations' .... that is what they are called in the UK anyway! There will be a review knocking around somewhere. Are don't have mini Twix in though mind ... I would love to know if they work in a mini format.

I am pleased you enjoyed your experience with Galaxy chocolate! It is one of my favourite mass produced chocolates here in the UK. I must say I love the caramel added in though ... for me it just takes it that step even further!

Thanks
JIM

I can't say I have chap! I will keep an eye out for them. Give me a heads up if you manage to spot one.

Yes, 'Celebrations' is the name. Comes in many shapes and sizes. I bought the smallest one, a plastic bag. But there are also boxes in all kinds of shapes - diamond, star, falling star (star with a 'tail'), boot, pyramid.

There are few caramel chocolates that can totally make me happy and this one came pretty close. The caramel has to be nicely flowing, exactly as it was here; I don't like chewy caramel. Then, the taste of caramel shouldn't get too strong compared with the chocolate. Well, at least here it was nice caramel...

One of the next things on my list of things I want to try is also something caramel - chocolate discs with a caramel filling from Guylian.

I've had one of the large Galaxy caramel bars and can't say I was too impressed. I don't know why...it was just not as nice as the smaller ones. On other hand, Dairy Milk caramel is always nicer in the larger bars than in the smaller ones. The chunks hold so much more caramel.

The Galaxy Caramel is delicious, but unlike you, I could not eat it endlessly. After finishing a 48g bar I felt thoroughly sick.

The Cadbury's version lasted longer and felt more substantial with a thicker chocolate casing, yet I didn't get that sickly feeling. For that reason, I prefer the Dairy Milk Caramel.

Galaxy caramel is definitely the best out of the 2.
