March 22nd: Nestle Smarties

Kcal 175 Fat 6.5g Fat(sats) 3.7

The Easter bunny isnt supposed to be making his official visit until tommorow but I was a lucky boy and was the reciever of a Smarties Easter Egg today from a kind relative.

Included in this Easter Egg pack were the standard chocolate egg that is included with all Cadburys Eggs this Easter and also two hexatube packs of Nestle Smarties. Tossing the chocolate egg to the side (no time for generic chocolate eggs this year round people!) I opened my first tube of Smarties for a good ten years :) smell??...distinctly lacking - no aroma worth mentioning aside from a slightly sweet smell.

One quick note is that the packaging claims that there is no artifical colourings or flavors...honestly thats a tad puzzling considering the colours these come in!? The blue colour is back!? does anyone care lol not me. Despite the meaningless package claim theres no doubting that they look great, natraul - no? appertising - kinda...intresting and different - definately.

Anyone whose been reading Chocolate Mission thus far will know that sugary shelled products havent been amongst the most highgly rated. I generally find them very artifical tasting (they genereally are!) and many of these products have been too dominated by these overpowering sweet flavours - not a good omen for a product that describes itself as 'milk chocolate in a crisp sugar shell'.

Smarties come in seven colours - all of which are the same in taste with the orange colour aside which has a slight orangey twang to it. Plently of nostalgic feelings quickly filled me as I emptied the contents of one the hexatubes into a bowl - the colours look amazing and although you know they all generally taste the same you cant help but match up your favourite colours and pick out the orange ones - great fun :D

After finally finishing fiddling around playing around matching up the colours (oh come on I cant be the only one) I finally got round to eating them :) Although slightly wary of the sugary shells I really quite enjoyed their presence in the product. The shells are far thinner than their M&M counterparts but still added a nice crispy bite to the product. Their thiness meant that they did not dominate the flavour and the milk chocolate quickly presented itself to the tastebuds and established itself as the dominant ingredient.

Chocolatewise Smarties are rather indifferent, their small size nature meant that whilst the chocolate is not overpowered its not a particularly strong flavour - that being said the blend of the shells and chocolate is overly pleasent and a single tube (38g) is a more than adequete serving size.

The orange Smarties although not plentiful in number (I only got two in a whole pack grrr!) are pleasent and the orange taste is a nice element to throw into the mix - why arent there tubes with just Orange smarties!? I guess this must have been done in some Limited edition capacity already??

Overall theres no doubting Smarties look great in appearance and im sure they probably bring back tons of great childhood memories for many a person. This aside though Smarties are a product that are never going to win any prizes in terms of taste. They are one of those products that are never going to offer an overly differential flavour extravaganza but if its a great looking nostalgic bringing chocolate experience your after, you can go little wrong with Smarties.

Got to pick you up on the orange flavour comments there Jim - you've fallen into an oft-fallen-into trap.

You say that the orange Smarties taste of orange. Well, you're not wrong, but you're not quite right enough. ALL Smarties taste of orange, it's just the orange ones taste twice as orangey. 1 part orange flavour in the other colours, 2 parts in the orange ones.

Disclaimer: may turn out to be urban legend, need to do some research, but wanted to post openly and spontaneously. I'll get back to you if I find out more...

Stu this is an intresting theory.

Honestly I dont believe it myself as I could detect any sort of Orange flavour in the other colours...but saying that if I were to find out it was true I would necessarily be too suprised.

We indeed will need to do some research - google seems like the best place to start :)

As I said in my review I got two tubes so I might just have to do some further research myself haha...any excuse eh!

Keep me posted on your findings matey!

Cheers

I'm struggling to find evidence of it myself - though no sign of anything outright denying it either. The search goes on. I might well have to test a packet too...

Side note: I always liked Giant Smarties best, but I don't think they're around any more. They had a superior chocolate to shell ratio (and conversely the Mini ones aren't the bother as there is far too much shell for the chocolate).

Indeed a quick google search by myself hasnt brought up anything...

The test is defo going to have to be in a 2nd taste - oh dear what a shame

Giant Smarties are indeed gone now - shame really. As for the mini smarties a you can see in the 'shakers' review above I was not a fan - like little balls of sugar.

Do share your thoughts if you taste test.

I'm testing it right now. I got a tube and an egg (already down in price).

I polished off the minis double time, to get me in a chocolate place after the bacon sandwich I'd just had, then moved on to the tube.

The orange ones are clearly orange, but it's difficult to say with the others - risk of falling prey to confirmation bias. Whether they're orange or not, they seem bitter compared to the orange ones. There may be hint, but I just don't know...

So, I emailed Nestle! Here's what I asked:

256!

1. Please bring back Giant Smarties. The chocolate/shell ratio resulted in a superior item.

2. Everyone says that orange ones taste of orange, but I heard they all do, with orange ones being twice as orangey. Please clarify Smarties' flavour.

Ta :D

The 256 being the paltry number of characters I had to work with. That took some editing! I'll let you know what they come up with.

Now, to polish off the egg - don't underestimate the value of a hollow egg. It may have been sitting in a warehouse for months, but something about the thickness of it, the way it breaks and melts, makes it a worthwhile change from regular slabs of chocolate.

Good work Stu - let us know if Rowntrees get back to you.

I just had my 2nd tube which came with my egg, I left the orange ones till lat and ate all the others first and honestly I couldnt detect any orange; it just tasted of milk chocolate to me.

Now that you have said that about the chocolate egg im going to have to review it. Will post that review tonight,I guess it will be intresting to see how it compares to the average Cadburys chocolate.

Woud definately like your comments on that aswell if you get the chance. Im going to contact some of my fellow chocolate reviewers to get their views on the Smarties situation!

Cheers

I knew there was something I'd forgotten, and when this comment appeared today, I was reminded - Nestle's response from couple of months back:

"We are sorry to inform you that Giant Smarties were withdrawn from our range some years ago due to the high cost of production and the relatively low level of sales at the time. We can assure you that the decision to withdraw any product is only taken with great reluctance as we realise that some consumers will be disappointed. There are no plans at present to re-introduce this product.

We use milk chocolate for all the sweets and the orange Smartie flavouring is now in the shell. Only the Orange Smartie has orange flavouring.

Thank you once again for taking the time and trouble to contact us. We hope you will continue to enjoy our products in the future."

So I was wrong. Fair enough. I'd still take those Giant Smarties back in a second though...

Stu Stu you legend cheers for gettin back to me on that. I thought Nestle might have just ignored your e-mail.

Annoying about the giant smarties eh :(

Have your tried the 'NEW' Smarties that Hutchy is saying arent as good!? To be honest I cant pass judgement as I havent eaten them since the day I reviewed them :( that what does suck about this blog a bit really...if I find something I like I hardly every get the chance to have it again as I always have to review something for the day after....oh well.

Cheers for sharing this info stu my man! It is now official the only orange smarties are....ORANGE SMARTIES :) our lives are all the better for knowing this vital information :D :D

Cheers fella!

I don't think I've tried new ones - the last ones I had were at Easter, and they had blue ones again. All I know is that the blue is from a seaweed called spirulina.

dooooohhhhh!! didn't read the review properly!! Turns out he did review the new ones,9meaning the blue is back tube)

They taste so bitter!!! I was an avid smarties until the new packets got released. Had one tube, never again :(:(:(

It's a real shame Giant Smarties have gone (same with Smarties Mini Eggs), I used to love them and they had more chcolate in than normal Smarties.

Hello. Great website.

Tried some 'mini' smarties today and noted:

- The shell-to-chocolate ratio is so high that they just taste of shell: not a great chocolate experience

- The orange ones have no discernible orange flavour, which is surprising given Nestle's comment that the orange flavour is all in the shell

Dan Hi there - glad you enjoy the site.

I haven't had Smarties for ages now, but I do find it odd that the mini orange Smarties don't taste of orange!!

I hope your check back on the site regularly! I update everyday!

Thanks
Jim

I remember seeing 'blue is back' adverts for Smarties when it was first announced. They were quite funny. Apart from childhood nostalgia though, I think Smarties are a pretty poor product. I'm never keen on candy coated chocolate, they all taste pretty rubbish.
