May 19th: Cadburys Twirl

Kcal 230 Fat 13.2g Carbs 23.8g

Its been three days since my review of the rather tasty (but messy) Cadbury Flake and im still finding bits on my carpet grrrrr! Fear not becuase todays bar offered a remedy to this annoying problem...I present to you the Cadbury Twirl!

Decribed on pack as the 'Itense chocolate Hit' this promised the same proposition of crumbly 'Flake' like chocolate, but this time encased in a solid coating....see the above picture to see what I mean.

Though not branded as a Dairy Milk bar its pretty safe to assume this is made from the same stuff with the dominant ingredient being milk. It was nice to see the addition of Cocoa Butter in this bar...whilst vegetable fat was still on the list it at least was not as prominant as you find in other mass confectionary items.

This bar came in a 43g serving and was divided into two fingers...snapping one of these fingers in half I was met with an instant Dairy Milk aroma...ohhhhh the glorious milky scent yum yum! More to the point the bar didnt crumble into a million bits! Hooray for solid milk chocolate coatings.

Texturewise this bar combined a thick outer layer with a crumbly inner layer that made for an intresting variety of flavour breadths. As promised on the pack, the outer thick layer provided an initial 'intense hit' of flavour which the inner layer complimented perfectly with its less 'full on' but more excitingly textured crumblyness.

Flavourwise I couldnt detect any difference from this bar and standard Dairy Milk. It had the same creamy cocoa rooted taste and was as equally delicious. Some find the flavour of Dairy Milk too concentrated however I think even those peopler might enjoy this bar as the layered effect worked extremely well to balance the intensity of the flavour.

Overall this is another Cadburys product that I have really enjoyed. Its nothing overly complicated here...just gorgeous Dairy Milk chocolate with the same intresting texture of a Flake, just without the added mess. For the above reasons and plus the fact its bigger, its no wonder this bar has scored slightly than the Flake - I would recommend to all Cadburys fans...all the taste just less mess...great stuff.

Yep, love Twirls. They're simple, nothing exciting to them really, but they taste wonderful. I much prefer them to the Flake :)

I love the Twirl as well - much easier to eat than a flake!

Although, as I tend to bite off the chocolate shell first, not really . . .

Gem/Fran/Amanda - As you can tell I really did enjoy this bar yesterday. Its not the most exciting bar ever in terms of new flavour concepts but on the whole its a pretty solid choice if you just want a nice chocolate hit.

Personally If i was offered a Twirl or a standard Dairy Milk bar I would choose the Dairy Milk but thats just because I prefer the nature of the blocks.

Thanks for the comments

Twirl is one of my faves - probably my favourite "all chocolate" bar.

It just seems to hit the spot better than Dairy Milk, but I suppose it's up to the individual's taste

Best to have it from the fridge too, makes it that little bit nicer

Russ - I can see why someone might prefer the Twirl to a standard DM but as you said its got to be down to personal pref.

As for eating from the fridge...I cant remember the last time I ate a bar that wasnt slightly chilled....they all taste better slightly below room temp + last longer in the mouth so the flavours can develop more.

Thanks for the comment

Hard to believe there are only 230 calories in the bar. It looks substantial. The chocolate composition of the filing looks kind of like a Time Out.

Justin - the inside in certainly very similar to that of the Timeout though obviously minus the wafer...its funny you should mention the Timeout actually as its the next bar im reviewing!

nice point about the calorie content aswell for such a chocolaty bar it is really quite low....I really do have a fond spot for the Twirl it truly is a great chocolate bar.

Thanks for the comment

this looks and sounds like a bar that's quite like the "Mars Delight" bar, except for the caramel-layer in it, of course:P...
by the way, have reviewed this bar before? it's really nice^^,

to bad I'm from Norway really, 'cause many of/almost every chocolate you have reviewed, I can't find in any stores at all... BTW: how about reviewing some Norwegian chocolate-types? they are really good in flavour, especially the dairy-milk ones..

love your site!! :D

Thanks for the respons.. I totally agree with you on the ranking of Mars Delight^^,

hmmm... It's difficult to recomand really, 'cause I don't know what kinds of chocolate-bars you prefer. but if you like plain dairy-milk, you should try out Freia's "Melkesjokolade".

we also have some really nice dark chocolate-types too. Freia's "Premium Dark" with either Rasberry or Orange.

in the other types, with caramel, wafers, creme etc. we have Nidar's "Smashbar", this bar is filled with salted corncrisp or something:P... or Freia's "Japp", which is very similar to "Mars", but "Japp" is almost doubble the size!... the third one I can recomand as a start is Freia's "Daim", hard to describe really...

I'm sorry if my English is bad, and just ask if there are things you're wondering about.. The main chocolate-companys in Norway is Nidar and Freia, I belive Freia is owned by Kraft, and their websites are: http://www.kraftfoodsnordic.com

http://nidar.no

I hope you got the answers you wanted, and more;P...

after scrolling down your site, I noticed that you've already made a review on "Daim".. well then I can recomend the bar "Cuba" from Nidar:) Tasty!

Benedicte - Your English is very good my friend dont you worry about that.

ive checked out both those sites you pointed me in the direction of...I havent been able o get too much infro from them as they are both obviously not in English :( some of the pics look nice though.

well Benedicte you have convinved me enough to try and find a source of Norwegian chocolate...I have no idea where to look to get some though :S

I dont know if you get Storcks Riesen chocolate in your country but they are being reviewed tommorow (Thursday!!) look out for them!

I really enjoyed this bar, Twirl when I had one the other day - it reminded me of a Flake Dipped which is similar(though Twirl was on the market beofre that). Simple Dairy Milk gooodness and it melted in the mouth easily, less messy than a Flake. Lovely.
BTW you can get Reisen Chocolate over here (Chocolate toffee in dark chocolate, if you mean that) and very nice it is too.

Simon It is indeed similar to the flake dipped but a bit more milky and creamy in its flavour! This is defo one of my Cadbury faves though! Your right its far less messy than a standard Flake!!

Not sure where you have plucked the old Reiesen thing from :S bit random!? I did happen to review it three days after reviewing the Twirl though --->

Twirls are great, I used to work in a newsagents and lots were sold.

Anon They seem to have been a hugely successful bar for Cadbury for many years, so im not surprised to hear that!

Cheers

I love twirls. I was a big cadburys fan, except now, as the months pass since Kraft took cadburys from British hands the flavour is changing. Less cocoa and reverting back to the Hersheys taste produced by the same company. Sacrelidge !

I consider this bar Cadbury's rival to the Mars Galaxy Ripple. They are essentially the same in composition, only one has dairy milk chocolate, and the other Galaxy chocolate. I think they are both delicious, but I think I have a slight preference for the Ripple.

I think these bars a great because you have the Flake like quality without the mess.
