May 29th: Cadbury Dairy Milk Tasters

Kcal 240 Fat 13.7g Carbs 25.4g

I hadnt seen these for a good while until I came across them in a Cadbury's branded vending machine at Gatwick airport the other day. These dont seem to be a product that are to readily avalible anymore though I remember a few years ago these were quite popular and also came in the form of a fruit and nut variant.

So let me fill in the people who are unaware what these are...Tasters are simply small solid balls of Dairy Milk that are slightly smaller than maltesers. These came in a pack of 45g...slightly smaller than the 49g that you get with the same chocolate in a single serving solid bar form.

In appearance they arent the most impressive product you will ever come across. They are hardly insulting on the eyes but are simply nothing more than small solid balls of milk chocolate...no enscriptions of any sort..just plain milk chocolate balls...for me not much of an issue but not the most exciting of prospects. Luckily the packet saves the product from mere asthetic mediocrity, its a stunning a pruple wrapper with gold enscribed writing. Not only does the wrapper look good but it also maintains a freshness to the product and retains that distinct dreamy smelling Dairy Milk aroma which eminated as soon as I opened the packet.

In taste these are no different to the Dairy Milk bar - its flavour is very creamy with an initial cocoa flavour that transforms into a wonderful creamy milky aftertaste...its delicious. Where the 'Tasters' format slightly suffers is in the texture of the product...due to their small size they arent the most substantial of products. The Dairy Milk flavour dosent seem to come through quite as strongly with these compared to the block form of the bar and I believe this is due to combination of the pieces small size and large surface area. This means they melt very rapidly in the mouth. Despite the nice aftertaste they leave the melting is too fast and the flavour cant be savoured for as long as with the blocks...which is a shame. Despite the rapidness of the melting the texture they do have once melted is smooth and overly pleasant.

Overall theres no doubting these are still a great tasting product...they were never not going to be as they are simply just Dairy Milk chocolate. Unfortunately the change in format from bar to small pieces dosent quite work. They dont feel as substantial as a proposition as the normal bar and certainly dont look as impressive. The flavour longevity also suffers a tad which is a shame as the taste is just so good. I can see how some people might prefer this format - its a different way to consume compared to a standard bar and their nibbling/snacking potential is endless. These are a great a great product but im not suprised they are currently being phased out...I would just recommend you stick with the standard bar...but if you see these and feel like a slight change from the norm I see no reason why not to give these a try.

I remember these very well. I used to grab a bag every time I saw them. But I haven't seen them in a long time. I assumed they had been removed from the market. I think they're very tasty.

Solid milk chocolate balls. I'd never heard of these. With limited editions and ever changing permutations of ingredients, it makes sense these aren't popular.

It's odd chocolate has taken such a backseat to the quality/variety of ingredients in "chocolate" candies. Oh well, not really sure whether that's a complaint or not... more of an observation. Thanks for the review.

Justing - Very true with all the different types of flavours/fillings flying around now a days its not suprising why products like this are slowly being lost from the market...even the finer Chocolatiers like Lindt etc onbviosuly see the way forward for their products is along the route of flavour progression rather than their own chocolate progression.

Interesting stuff....im thinking about what you have been saying quite a bit this morning and I seriosuly cant remember the last time that a brand of chocolate came to the market with a simple plain chocolate bar offering (just a plain bar of chocolate..no flavours etc).

Maybe theres just no room with the dominance of the brands that are alreayd established!?

....im waffling now but I have thought of an example of a plain chocolate bar that has sought of been used as NPD brand extension..the Cadbury Wispa!!...but even thats debatble on wether it counts because its not exactly NPD...more of a relaunch.

Yeah, that is strange not straight chocolate bars have come out recently. Come to think of it, do you know if Mars has ever had just a chocolate bar? Plain M&M's have a candied shell so the flavor isn't quite "pure."

I wonder what that would taste like.

I used to love these. They only place I new that sold them was at my local bowling alley where they were in a vending machine, and I used to buy a few packs whenever I went.

I can't really remember my experience of them that well as it was many years ago, but I must have liked them a lot to keep on buying them.

Justin I honestly ant off the to of my head recall a plain chocolate bar offering from Mars...how odd. Maybe a luxury sort of plain chocolate is the way forward for them..sometimes keeping it simple is the way forward - not all these spin off limited editions! The markets going to get sick of them soon! Talking about Mars they were supposed to be bringing out a new bar this year in the UK this year called the 'Fling'...its been cancelled though due to production shortages..oh well Let me know if you think of a plain Mars chocolate!

Colin I think the whole premise of these were that they were/are for on the go consumption hence why we keep finding them in vending machines etc...maybe Cadbury have now just realised that the bar form i just as easy. To be honest if they do go its not the biggest loss ever as they dont have any real unique selling points of their own. Its funny how some bars evoke random memories isnt it!

Thanks for the comments

oh my god, i found these in a shop up town (aldershot) and was shocked, haven't had these in years, still in the 80's style packet, much nicer than dairy milks in my opinion.

Anon Hi there, it's funny how these randomly see to pop up! As far as im aware they are still being produced by Cadbury but their distribution is quite low! The one and only place I have seen these in the last few years is in Gatwick airport in the Cadbury branded vending machines!! random huh!? The packaging is the old school Cadbury artwork....far better in my opinion! Just so classic looking!

Thanks for sharing your opinion! Leave your name next - would be great knowing whose talking to me :)

Thanks
Jim

i remember Tasters and had thought them long gone until I started seeing them in the Train station newsagent in Middlesbrough. I thought at first they must be ancient stock mainly due to the old style packet and the fact i never se them in teh shops but they werent and they still stock them so i buy a bag everytime im there. i also prefer the old style design. how come they never changed it if they still make them? wierd huh?

Alan Good to hear of another sighting of these. They just seem to be getting more and more rare.

I think they havent bothered changing the packaging as they have such low distribution - the cost of implementing the design work change might not out weighed by the sales...just a though!? Do they have the fruit and nut tasters in that newsagents Alan!? Im yet to see them in years!!

Thanks for the input

It's funny I was eating a bag of these the other day and kept thinking 'why don't cadbury relaunch these to fit in to their new 'snacking' range along with the clusters, raisins etc? They could do milk choc, fruit and nut and caramel balls! Tasters fit perfectly into that range of products in my view! lol they wont of course!

cheers

Lee What is with Cadburys Tasters and ublic transport ... first airports now train stations :D I hope you find a good source

Alan I agree with you there it would have been a perfect fit! Seemingly they seem to be pushing the Cadbury Buttons though - I guess with the 'Buttons' brand being a lot stronger than the 'Tasters' one it was a good decision! Still though they need to get higher distribution for Tasters IMO!

If you didn't see Heidi's post yesterday you may be interested to know that the Wispa Gold is coming back :D :D Good times!

Cheers Guys

I'm hoping that now theyve finally revamped the bag (though I miss the retro look above) it may mean theyre going to get abit more attention lol.

I noticed that they HADN'T plastered 'NEW' allover them unlike some companies that could be mentioned *points at Mars and Nestle* haha
