May 8th: Cadbuys Twisted

Kcal 210 Fat 9.4g Fat(sats) 5.8g Carbs 27.9g

This is probably one of the hardest reviews I have had to write for Chocolate Mission.

Let me get this straight from the start...this is a great tasting chocolate bar...bottom line.
Though let me also get this straight from the word go...this is not an 'an innovative bar' nor is it really 'innovation' as we have been led to believe by Cadbury in their press releases.

With wording like that from their marketers I was actually really quite excited about this bar and forked out 55p to get my hands on it...ok this is not exactly breaking the bank but this is relatively more expensive than your average Cadbury bar...hmmm I seem to remember paying 38p just a few weeks ago for a Cadburys Dairy Milk with Creme Egg.

55p later and further inspection of the snazzy looking wrapper revealed some intriguing facts... the 'Twisted' had exactly the same nutritional information than the Cadburys Dairy Milk with Creme Egg..surely not...!? YEP down to the last gram!...coincidence!?

Opening the bar it had a sweet fragrant Dairy Milk cocoa aroma - apparently according to the wrapper, Dairy Milk contains min 20% Cocoa Solids- news to me. The bar itself is smaller than your standard Dairy Milk bar...further research has show that it is only a few grams smaller at 43g in weight though - it was really quite a filling bar anyway so no complaints there.

As you will see in the picture above the bars' name is obviously derived from its shape. Its shaped identically to a Mars Delight bar - a long rippled finger...though as you can guess this its quite alot thicker...at least it looked more impressive than the Cadburys Dairy Milk with Creme egg.

You will also see in the cross section above that the chocolate was really quite thick - it provided a nice solid coating to the bar and stopped any of the fondant centre seeping out (a common problem I always had with the Dairy Milk with Creme Egg variant). The fondant centre had a smoother texture than you will find in the standard creme egg - to be honest I preferred the smoother feel.

Tastewise...guess what???? Its Dairy Milk with Creme Egg fondant centre...this of course is a good thing. The Dairy Milk chocolate was its normal creamy self, a combination of a smooth but rich cocoa taste...always a winner in my book. The fondant centre was also its usual tasty self, of course ever so sweet, but again like in the Creme egg, its correctly proportioned with the chocolate, making for a good balance of flavours. Anything missing here!??? ahh yes that marketing buzzword...'innovation'!

Overall its been very hard to score this bar. As I said above its damn tasty and on this basis alone I would recommend it to anyone...this is where my recommendations on this bar stop though because in truth I feel cheated. This is not the innovative product we were promised..this is the Cadburys Dairy Milk with Creme Egg bar but with a snazzy wrapper and new bar appearance. Even if these changes are admittedly for the better, this does not excuse the fact we are now paying around 20p more for these irrelevant changes. At the end of the day this is simply a bit of 'marketing magic' that I'm sure I will not be the only victim of. Cadbury have managed to create a buzz about a product that already exists, and are charging a higher price for it. In relation to the standard Creme Egg it just doesn't have the same magic...it doesn't look as good and the value isn't a great. Despite all this its a great tasting bar..but if your expecting something ground breaking your going to be left disappointed.

I really shouldn't read your page when I'm on a diet.

Jay - its all about everything in moderation. If you banish yourself of chocolate your bound to fail.

Just check out the nutritional info I post with each review - should give you a view on the bars that are kinder on the waistline! Try a crunchie..or simply just go for the smaller bars.

I guess one of things going for the twisted is that relative to other bars on the market its Kcal/fat content is quite low.

...as I said everything in moderation!

I agree completely. I have chocolate at least 3 times a week, and I have still managed to lose 3 stone since November!!

Everything in moderation indeed :)

Congratulations on that Amanada thats a really good achievement - you should be really proud. I hope you have done it for your own reasons and not the pressures of society today.

it always rattles my cage when people say 'I havent eaten chocolate for xxxx amount of days - arent i good!?'....the answer is generally no as they are gonna be the same people who eventually end up seeing away 400g of Galaxy in a momment of weaknesses.

Its all about a healthy balanced diet - and that can include treats!

Thanks very much Jim :) (btw - same Amanda, but got my blogs mixed up - now linking to my comparatively baby chocolate blog!).

I have a fridge stuffed with chocolate at the moment, but no desire to fill my face with it. A little suffices and I really enjoy what I have, but as soon as you deprive yourself of it, that's when you want to stuff yourself silly with it!

One chocolate bar a day keeps the doctor away *haha* In my opinion its just depends on how much chocolate u eat.

Amanda i was not aware if your site..nor was I aware I was linked on it!

I will add you to my blogroll straight away, I really like your site and your pictures are very good - there can never be too many opinions given on chocolate.

I have soooo many chocolate bars at home its ridiculous...in any attempt to get some way through it im breaking my rule of one chocolate bar a day at the mommment.

I had two last night and I cant tell you how ill it made me feel :)

Franzi - I agree with you - a bar a day will keep the doctor away :D

has anyone else managed to get hold of a Cadburys Twisted yet? The actualy release date isnt until the 21st but it seems WH Smith have broken that date the naughty people!

Hi Jim

I have just eaten my first Cadbuys Twisted Bar and as a fan of the Cream Egg i was looking Very forward to this.

It smelt very sweet and looked very good (Maybe a little small when next to something like a Mars Bar).

After eating and upon reflection its a very nice bar but the Cream Egg beats it just because of its fantastic Eggy shape and the slightly thicked Chocolate.

Still its very good and was my first bit of Chocolate in over a month (Holiday in September and must look good)...

SJ - Blimey no chocolate in a month that is some good work! Getting the beach bod primed are we.

I agree with you this bar although good just dosent have the magic of the Creme egg...creme eggs are currently going cheap at the momment in place like Woolies got them on multibuys (3 for £1 etc)...its going to be another whole year again before they come back :( :( :( i guess the twisted will just have to do!

Pretty good review that Jim. The only thing I'd say is... what's the point of this bar? It's not a standard chocolate bar, and it's not as good as an egg either. It's the bastard sum of both, and ultimately, although it's nice, I think it fails to provide adequetly what it's seperate components would give.

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Lutz - I do agree with you there...if I was ever going to buy the creme egg in bar form anyway it would be the normal Dairy Milk with Creme egg...which subsequently seems gone now.

Give me the egg anyday...it just has more of a fun feel to it.

Thanks for the comment appreciate it

surely the point is that they are making the creme egg experience available year round, and that's why it isn't an egg but a bar? i wasn't expecting it to be any different, just there in september....

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

marsha - yes the point of it is that its avalible all year round...but it already was avalible all year round in the form of the Dairy Milk with Creme Egg...this is entirely the same proposition.

I'm impressed with the Twisted, the Dairy Milk w/Creme Egg just never worked for me and this does seem to give you a better hit of 'goo'. I find when I open one I feel a bit deprived by it's small size yet it is actually very satisfying, that said, my greedy side would welcome a kingsize version!

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Saz - A king sized twisted eh!? Now theres an idea!? I doubt that would ever happen though lets be honest...seems Cadbury are intent of making everything smaller..looks what they have done to the egg over recent years :(

Hi Jim,

I know what you mean about the Twisted bar, I was a liitle puzzled by the 'innovation' aspect lol I love Creme Eggs and remember being very dissappointed with teh Dairy Milk with creme egg bar for some reason - I had one and didnt enjoy it - i think i decided that the chocolate to filling ratio wasnt quite right with it being in lttle chunks and the choclate being thinner etc however i enjoyed the Twisted bar much more mainly because it seemed to tatse much more like the Egss :) not sure if I'm the only one feels like this lol

Alan indeed the innovation is slightly lacking IMO!! Personally I just had no preferrence between this and the Cadbury Dairy Milk with Creme Egg. To be honest I would quite as happily eat either! There no doubting they both taste great! Its just disappointing when NPD sucks as much as this!

Cheers
Jim
