June 12th: Drifter

Kcal 264 Fat 12.4g Carbs 35.8g

Well its back!!....Anyone else not notice it even disappear? Well according to Nestle in order to 'ride the wave of consumer demand for nostalgia inspiring bars' (like the Cadbury Wispa) the Drifter is now back in distribution.

Personally I have a few problems with what Ive just 'informed' you of. First of all since when did the Drifter become such an iconic brand!? To some extent I can see why Cadbury have very cleverly brought the Wispa in and out of distribution...the bar has a history with consumers - they have a connection with it...can we really say the Drifter has the same brand power to evoke similar feelings!?...for me no! Secondly theres a few rumours going around that more to the point say the Drifter was brought out of distribution in the first place due to it having a very high transfats content....so its not really a relaunch its just been taken from the market and reformulated....well the pack gives nothing away on transfats content so whether that is true or not is unclear.

Anyway....on to the important stuff.

For anyone thats forgotten the Drifter contains a 'crispy wafer dipped in chewy caramel and covered in milk chocolate'. The bar came in a 52g serving that despite its size was hardly the most fufiling bar.

Now from what I remember of the Drifter they used to come in a foil wrapper? Not anymore it seems - it came in a standard plastic wrapper with a very plain design. The lack of finesse and glitz on the 'on-pack' design work transpired to the actual bar aswell...its was pretty boring in my opinion just two long fingers with a very subtle wripple effect...really not exciting. Despite the lack of foil wrapping the smell of the bar wasnt bad - it had a sweet cocoa smell that had a hint of a honey-like scent to it...not bad at all.

I sightly chilled this bar and this made for a nice variation of textures. The slighlty chilled outside layer although lacking a tad in thickness had a nice thickness to it and had a nice 'crack' to the bite. The chocolate was pretty standard Nestle quality...I have remarked on it several times already but I will reiterate the point again its sweet tasting and slightly milky...its not bad for chocolate that is massed producded.

The caramel and wafer layers are interspersed throughout the bar. The wafer didnt have the crunch I was expecting and was slightly soft and stale like in texture - compared to say the wafer of a Kit Kat it was poor in contrast. Its flavour was also lacking...largely flavourless though it had a slight note of wheat.

The caramel layer was described as chewy and that it was - it was very thick and unfortunately clung to my teeth. Its flavour was sweet but lacked an edge that the better caramel based bars establish.

Overall I cant see to many people getting excited about the re-emmergence of this bar. The chocolates ok..but its nothing you cant get with any other Nestle bar. The caramel element isnt bad either its flavour is ok but its partially spoilt by an overly thick texture. What really let this bar down was the wafer which was largely lacking in flavour with a below par texture. I guess if you enjoy a Kit Kat and can deal with a slightly less accomplished wafer then you may enjoy this bar...for the rest its probably just another relaunch you can let pass you by.

Weirdly enough, I was just thinking about Drifters yesterday, and how I really fancied one. I love them. I think the wafer and chewy caramel make for a perfect combination. :)

Hadn't heard of these before. It's a pretty clever effort to create demand through peer-pressure. From the sound of it, no one was really crying to have these back. Thanks for the review!

I remember reading that segment about the Drifter being brought back for nostalgic reasons too. When did it leave? Who cared? I certainly didn't, it's a lacklustre bar.

Terry Heres an interesting article on the whole thing if you got a minute

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/food/2008/05/food_nostalgia_wispaing_campai.html

The whole reason for why it actually disappeared remains unclear...ive asked for several peoples opinions todays and I have had e-mail ranging from saying production problems, lack of demand and also confirming the transfat thing I talk about in the review!! All a bit puzzling really isnt it....anyone else got any info on the matter....its been a slow day at work today so I did try contacting the press office :) :) said I know...but all I got was an automated response...probably didnt help I was calling from a competitors HQ though eh!?

Gemma Well luckily for you it probably wont be long till these start appearing all over the place again..you should tell me wether your expectations weres fufilled once you have had one...fair play if it does :) :)

Jason Between you and Terry you sum it up nicely...no one cares...its why its so puzzling they are trying to bring it back on the Nostalgia positioning...all a bit puzzling really. Its not a bar I reccomend you go out your way to try.

Thanks for all the input everyone! Very much appreciated as normal!

Hi thought I'd leave a post to say I thought your review of the Drifter bar was a bit lacking... you shouldn't have chilled the bar first as it is a lot better slightly warm so the chocolate stays on your hand and the caramel layer is very chewy.

BTW Nestle introduced an Apple Pie and Custard Drifter in the mid 90s which was amazing... I must have have had about 2 or 3 of them a day when I was at Uni.

Paul I think your phrasing of my review being 'lacking' is a tad harsh and a bit nasty. Personally I prefer to chill bars so I can savour there flavours longer ... to be honest getting chocolate all over my fingers isnt something I really enjoy so to me personally that wouldnt be a good thing...each to their own though!

Those apple pie drifters sound intresting. Would defo have loved to have tried that! Are there any old pictures that you know of on the net!? A quick search revealed nothing for me :(

Thanks for the input but be a bit more sensitive next time...I do try my best!

Thanks
Jim

Sorry Jim... just a little passionate :)

I love your site and think what you are doing is great.

The Apple Pie and Custard edition might have been a trial run which failed there is very little on the Internet about them unfortunately... they were delicious.

Again sorry for the 'lacking' comment

Paul No problem buddy - just me being overly sensitive lol! Thanks for the kind words.

Apple pie and custard does sound pretty yummy to me...definately unique anyway! how was it built - similar to a Drifter? Did it include chocolate? where/how was the custard bit implemented!? lol sorry for the 101 questions im just intrigued and details are veyr sketchy!

Cheer for the input.

If i remember correctly - about 15 years since I had one (OMG THAT long??)

It was the same setup as the current drifter but with tiny apple pieces in the custard flavored caramelly bit at the top.

Has to be my all time favourite bar.

Current favourite is the KitKat (4 finger).

Paul That all sounds good to me! As I said very unique anyway! Maybe..just maybe we will see it come back in some form - 15 yrs is a long time though so im guessing the chances are pretty slim! Cheers for telling us about it! Its always nice to hear about older bars!

Thanks
Jim

hey jim

i spotted a drifter at the train station a few days ago and decided id try one since i havent had one in years.. they taste no different, like you i find the caramel a bit too thick and the wafer a bit soft...i neither love it or dislike it, its one of those funny bars for me lol

i think they were in foil for a while, originally plastic (brown not blue) then they revamped them in blue foil tho ive always thought the packet very dull.

cheers

Alan I remember reading this last year:

http://www.caterersearch.com/Articles/2008/08/27/323085/drifter-bar-relaunched-by-nestl.html

an article claiming it was being relaunched ... though I still very rarely see it.

Lowest key relaunch ever!??? Possibly!

Dear Mr Jones

Thank you very much for your email.

Due to a production problem, Drifter bars were only temporarily withdrawn for a period during 2007/2008. During that period we had numerous enquiries from Drifter fans and stock soon returned to independent retailers, such as the Co-Op and Spar. Multipacks are now available from supermarkets. Please accept our apologies for any confusion caused by this short break in production.

We can confirm that we have no record of the apple pie and custard flavour you mention.

Thank you again for taking the trouble to contact us. We are grateful for the interest you have shown in our company.

Yours sincerely

Leave your name next time chap!

Personally I never came across that bar myself but you obviously haven't imagined it!

Does anyone else remember this bar? Pictures anyone!????

SOS choocolate detectives!

Thanks

I had a Drifter the other day for the first time in yonks, mainly because my sister had bought the multipack single finger versions as they were on offer. I decided to buy a normal 2 finger version because I quite like them and to see if I had imagined the difference- I hadn't! Now, I have to say Nestle are very sneaky with these bars - I suspect to fit them under the 'only 99 calories' banner (or perhaps they have actually changed them across the board and my 2 finger bar wasn't a 'new' one) they have altered the wafer from the one above to a kinda white soft fluffy one (like a white version of those pink wafers) which has absolutely no flavour whatsoever. Even the caramel had no flavour. It wasn't even just sweet! lol. I know Drifters arent the best bar on the planet, -and your not a massive fan Jim,- but Nestle can be very underhand at times! grrr

I am always surprised at how poorly Nestle treat the Drifter brand ... it is almost like the black sheep in the portfolio!

I too haven't had one ...well since the day I wrote this review ... which is nearly 18 months ago now so I can pass comment on the quality as it is now.

What I am desperately disappointed to hear is that quality of the wafer has been furthe depriciated ... how utterly lame!

It is a shame as I think it is a brand with real potential! Nestle have just lynched it!

Cheers for sharing your opinion! Your right Nestle do suck sometimes ... make that alot of the time!

Hi,

I know that it's been a couple of years since the last post, but I was Googling for information about the famed Apple Pie & Custard Drifter. I am stunned that Nestle say they never made it. I have a the wrapper right here in front of me! If there's any interest I'll post a picture.

Hi Jack (and, by extension) guys!
The Apple Pie and Custard Drifter was genuinely by absolutely miles my favourite chocolate bar for all of the one or two year period they existed. No-one has believed me about their existence for a long time and I would be exceptionally grateful were you to post an image on here, for the sake of my sanity if nothing else. I also agree with Alan that the quality of the wafer has depleted. I'd like to get a campaign going to bring back the A&C Drifter, but it would be a difficult revolution to start, given that no-one remembers them (think 'The Silence' from Doctor Who)

I know you gave this an average score, but I'm quite frankly surprised that it didn't on the 'lowest' of the leader board. I thought this was a pretty awful bar.

It is described as 'crispy wafer dipped in chewy caramel and covered in milk chocolate', but I found that it was more a 'spongey wafer barely dipped in tasteless caramel and coated in an extremely thin layer of milk chocolate.'

I was wondering if we were talking about the same bar when you said the caramel was chewy and thick, the one I ate had practically nothing there!

My partner said no other chocolate bar could touch these. He told me him & his dad were practically addicted & used to buy boxes when they could as they were so nice & actually tasted like apple pie and custard! After researching them I can see a lot of people loved them & want them back but nestle deny all knowledge!!!!! Why is this? What did they contain? Was it some illegal, health damaging or highly addictive ingredient??? They might not have sold as well as expected but that wouldn't be reason to deny existence, he said if they were re-released he probably wouldn't touch another chocolate bar again! Also, I would like to try one :)
