July 12th: Revels

Kcal 168 Fat 7.3g Carbs 23.8g

Unfortunately for us in the UK its Big Brother time again and Revels are the latest brand this year to climb on the bandwagon with their own flavour themed 'eviction'. It indeed seems that Mars are getting rid of one of the current flavours - if you care you can cast your vote on this site 'Revels Eviction'.

For those of you who aren't from the UK and don't know what Revels are, they are balls of milk chocolate which have an assortment of flavoured centres. The flavours include: coffee, orange, chocolate, raisin, caramel and Maltesers. These came in a 35g bag, which although wern't the most hunger fulfilling made were a sufficient snack. The Packaging looked okish - not the greatest choice of colours on the wrapper all of which I think are a bit mundane. The Revels themselves were mostly pretty hard to tell apart - the Maltesers, orange, coffee and caramel are totally non distinctive....though judging by the last marketing campaign the 'roulette' nature of these are meant to be a selling point and not a frustration....I guess the little anticipation before the revelation of the flavour hit was partially interesting.

Despite the huge variation of flavours the bag smelt purely single scented...a very familiar milky cocoa aroma that wasn't to forthcoming in its strength.

Due to the nature of the different centres there were a variety of different textures and of course flavours. The milk chocolate coating was the same across all flavours - not the strongest tasting but with a nice milky flavour that allowed the different flavours of the centres to establish themselves.

Orange - Had a nice fruity taste that although sweet were just about the right strength in flavour concentration. The texture was fondant like and contrasted nicely with the smooth milk chocolate coating.

Chocolate - The most obvious shaped and flavoured exactly the same as the rest of the milk chocolate coatings. The texture was nice and smooth - although not the most exciting they were a pleasant flavour.

Coffee - My favourite of the lot. The texture had the same fondant like grainy feel of the orange though it tasted not half as sweet with a unique cappuccino like taste. Unfortunately I only got two of these in my pack :(

Caramel - Due to their name I was expecting a far softer more liquid centre..in actual fact I think these would be better described as toffee. They were soft and and chalky in the mouth and had a very awkward dry feeling agaisnt the smoothness of the milk chocolate. They weren't the most forthcoming in flavour though had a nice buttery aftertaste.

Raisin - These were not the freshest tasting Raisins I have ever had and the nature of their skins made for a pretty vile clash of smooth and leathery textures. Despite their horrible texture they had a nice sweet fruity sugary flavour that I enjoyed.

Maltesers - Well whats there to say? A nice combination of light textured honeycomb and milk chocolate but in comparison to the other flavours on offer I found myself disappointed when I came across one of these.

Overall these are a pretty standard and unspectacular collection of flavours. Personally my favourites were the orange and coffee...both of which offered a nice variable texture and flavour hit against the smooth milk chocolate coatings. The caramel, raisin and chocolate flavours offered moderately interesting alternatives, though I have to call in to question the inclusion of the Maltesers. In comparison to the other alternatives the Maltesers lack that flavour hit and personally if I was to vote to get rid of one of the flavours it would be that one...after all if you fancy Maltesers just buy a bag of them!! These aren't the most spectacular of products ever and your hardly missing out if you give these a miss...for those that like a bit of variation in their chocolate these are a nice choice for you. If you guys vote in the 'flavour eviction' leave a note of which you voted for!!

These are very interesting, kind of like the See's bridge mix. The orange actually sounds like a good idea. In moderation it could be a great compliment to the other flavors. Thanks for the review!

Orange and coffee are definatly my favourites just because they are so unique.

I've voted, GET RAISIN OUT!

Coffee is losing last time I checked :(

Justin Ive just looked at the See's Bridge Mix...to be honest it looks superior! The See's stuff looks like it uses far far nicer ingredients. The orange flavour is definately one of the better flavours! Taking a look at the 'eviction' site though it appears my personal fave coffee is on its way out :( :(

Thanks for the recommendaion of the See's mix! Cheers for the post!

Hutchy Yep 100% agree with you about the Coffee and orange flavours...I like their fondant like centres!

As I just said to Justin Coffee and you have confirmed coffee is somehow losing bigtime it was 37% last time I checked...with raisin on 22%.... :( its a landslide by the looks of things!

Thanks for the input!

I like the chocolate and Malteser ones, but I hate the raisin ones. I preferred Revels when they had the peanut ones in them.

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Gemma Peanut you say!? I can sort of remember seeing it on the packaging before but I cant say I have ever tried it myself!!

I think the whole idea of the 'eviction' is to bring a new flavour in...well you would hope so anyway! Personally i think if they brought back the peanut that would be another good variation to have!!

Thanks for sharing that! I hope you didnt vote coffee :P

I hope the raisin ones go.Like eating an elderly person's skin.

Lottie lol thats one of the funniest and most graphic descriptions of chocolate texture i think I have read :D :D unfortunately is also disturbingly accurate...if I didnt like the flavour so much I would have to say get them out!!

Thanks for continually providing some well needed humour :D

Yesterday, i had the weirdest packet of revels!

1. no malteasers
2.a toffee the size of one of the malteaser
3. A raisin, with no chocolate!

horror!

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Hutchy Blimey that does sound like a bit of a Frankenstein packet!! I cant say the packet I had was too weired but I did have a hell of alot of oranges ones and only two coffee :( :( as I said in my review the coffee ones were my fave aswell...and they look destined to be evicted too :( boohoo

They so frequently mess up the mix of different chocolates in Revels and there are never enough coffees - imho the best flavour by far. But maybe it's deliberate in order to give them an elusive, exotic quality. I'm convinced of this actually. I've been a huge fan of these for years and was so unhappy when they got rid of the peanuts for raisin because I felt peanut's basic flavour and taste was a nice counterbalance to the sweetness in the rest of the packet. So I voted to get rid of the raisin - I just wonder with utmost anticipation what the new Limited Edition flavour will be - you simply must post a review!

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Blargoid Hi there I dont recall you ever commenting before so welcome to the blog - stick around!!

It does seem a pretty common thing that the flavours arent mixed well enough...surely it cant be too hard making sure each bag has an equal mixture! Its defo something I think they need to adress in the near future.

I can never recall having Revels back when they had peanuts so I cant pass judgement on that...half of me is expecting the new flavour to be peanut anyway!! When they do get released with the new flavour rather than reviewing them all over again I may just update the current review we are posting on with an *UPDATE SECTION* ... makes sense to me I think!

Anyway before I rattle on forever thank for your comment and I hope you stick around and continue to leave your views.

Thanks
Jim

Jim, looking at the T&C's on the packet, looks like voting doesn't end to September! So maybe coffee still has a very slim chance of surviving!

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Hutchy Fingers crossed eh! Is there an update on the current %'s I havent looked for ages!? Talk about dragging it out September is ages away!

Thanks
Jim

Hutchy Great work! Thanks for providing this! I simply cant believe coffee is losing so badly....not cool at all we need to rid of the Malteasers people!!

Thanks again!

Yes, I think I agree with you Jim now I have pondered it; if people want Maltesers they can buy some. Though they are a lovely treat I don't think they belong in a packet of Revels. I still don't think that peanut should have been ousted though.

And, thank you for the welcome, I will certainly be posting my comments more frequently - thank you for such an enlightened gastronomical reviewary!

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Blargoid It's great to hear you will be posting more frequently! As i said its great to hear from my readers and the more opinions the better in my view!! I look forward to hearing more from you!!

I cant unfortunately pass comment on the peanut one as I never happened across a pack of Revels when they were included. If they turned out to be the 'new mystery flavour' it would be a tad unimaginative but I wouldn't complain! Regarding the Maltesers - if people were going to miss them that much they could simply buy a pack of Maltesers with the new pack of Revels...and they would be back where they started! I just dont understand why people are voting out some of the independent flavours!! Who knows eh!?

Thanks for the input

Well, I have come across some more information on Revels' history. My mum tells me that they were originally perceived as 'a box of chocolates in a bag' and there was a raspberry flavour and a coconut flavour! Maybe one of them will return, albeit temporarily... They did hint it would be some exotic flavour with the coastal themed eviction website.
And I really can't believe that we might be without coffee! There simply aren't enough coffee flavoured chocolates out there.

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Blargoid Now there is some knowledge thanks for sharing this with us! The return of the raspberry or coconut would be pretty welcome as far as im concerned!! What with Mars already having the BOUNTY bar on its books aswell they will already have production of coconut goods and have a recipe! If I was a betting man I would put my money on that. Whats your money on!?

I honestly cant believe coffee is going...its criminal! The coffee flavour is also pretty good aswell which makes it all the worse!

Thanks for that information it was really interesting!

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Hutchy Hey man! Thanks for the update!!

This is still an absolute travisty!! How is coffee losing!? Damn you Malteasers!! Damn you!!

Has anyone else voted recently?

Speculation is not really hitting fever pitch for the new flavour is it!? lol most people are simply not getting there hopes up! Thats probably a good thing mind!

Cheers again Hutchy! Useful update!

Hutchy said...

Don't worry Jim, I have a plan....

Buy loads of packets now, wait for the new packets come out, and replace all the raisins/new flavour (could be worse than Raisin :O:O)with the coffees from the old packet! Genius! :D:D:D:D

May cost a few bob though in buying all those old packets...

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Hutchy Haha thats a good plan but not one I will do myself!

I dont know why i am coplaining so much - its not as if I will be eating a pack of Revels again anytime soon...maybe a re-review when the new flavour comes out!

You see if people were clever they would have just voted out Maltesers and just kept all the flavours as they could have just topped up the new pack with a pack of Maltesers on the side....silly silly people eh!

Coffee is soo doomed! Thanks for giving the update much appreciated!

im surprised coffee is teh highest for being voted out - its very much an 'in' flavour these days and not one that is in chcolate enough - they got rid of many in things like Quality Street and Roses etc. Have to say though Revels are not my favourite sweets lol

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Alan Nup Revels arent among my faves either if im honest! Im not a whole big fan of the mix and match thing!

I wish they would bring out whole bags of the Coffee flavoured ones!! That would be awesome!

HUGE news, Jim!

I telephoned Mars UK yesterday and said I would prefer either raspberry flavour or Bounty, and they have noted my request. The lovely lady said that it would be chosen by consumers (the new flavour) and also said that as I was such an ardent fan, that I would receive £2 of vouchers in the post to tide me over!

Watch this space!

Blargoid/Jim.

PS Should I have been a bit more adventurous re: my choice?

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

blargoid haha thats one way to do it ... go straight to the manafacture! I like your thinking... plus you got some free stuff aswell :D :D always a bonus!! Great work! Maybe other people should do this aswell!!

Regarding your choices I think you did rather well...I would have thrown peanut butter in the mix aswell but your choices are great too! Well done you!!

Cheers for the update and sharing this with us! I hope other people can take advantage of this as well.

Malteaser 6%
Caramel 12%
Orange 13%
Raisin 25%
Coffee 41%

COFFEE'S GONE! :(:(:(:(

Whenever you said the new flavour would bbe chosen by consumer, do you mean we pick, or Mars do?

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Hutchy Thanks for providing this info!! I completely took my eyes off things....

well well well we took out probably the most unique of all the flavours!! How very silly of us all!! We only have ourselves to blame :(

In response to your question Hutchy... Blargoid stated that Mars said that the consumers would choose the new flavour ... im assuming they will do this in a sample method using some market research and not the open ended manner to which everyone can vote like the 'eviction' .... shame really as at least then we could try make up for the loss of the coffee flavour. Peanut Butter for the win!!

Roisin said...

The new flavour is a strawberry similar to the orange texture... I was hoping for something like fudge. Coffee was better, I don't understand why people voted it out!

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Roisin So let me get this straight

they took out my favourite flavour ....

and replaced it with one that I am allergic to :D :D

suffice to day I won't be having Revels any time soon! lol!

Thanks for the info!!
Jim

Roisin said...

Well it probably doesn't have any strawberry in it knowing Revels lol! I doubt there's any orange in it for the orange flavour!

Besides that it's not that exciting.. bit of a disappointment really. I was hoping for something that tasted better!

alan said...

lol i like strawberry tho it still wont entice me to go and buy some revels, lol i still dont like the whole 'mixed bag' thing - revels, mars planets etc

cheers
alan

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Roisin This is very true I bet the flavour will obviously be achieved through flavourings.

Alan a completely underwhelming choice isn't it .... what a shame!!

Cheers
Jim

Hutch said...

When I bit the top of it off, I thought it was marshmallow! :(:(:(:(:(

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Hutch I can imagine your disappointment! Not cool huh :( We only have ourselves to blame!

Heidi said...

Did anyone/you Jim try the Strawberry flavour?

I had some Revels this morning and I was hoping to try it, and found coffee back >.< (I don't like coffee so it was an unwelcome surprise!)

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Heidi Gone already!? That didn't take long did it! I can't say I ever got to try the strawberry one myself :( shame really.

How can you not like the coffee ones ... they are my faves :p

Thanks
Jim

James V said...

Cheers Heidi for confirming it. I had a pack of revels the other day and I had a few coffees!
I was chuffed. It's weird really, I never usually like the taste of coffee in things. But I love these; you're right - they're so unique.
Well they're back Jim! Other than peanut butter though, what would have been your preferred replacement?

The orange and coffee are my favourite too. The other flavours are pretty average. I was disappointed that theRevels were scentless, but they are still an enjoyable snack.

BTW, the packet have now rightly renamed the caramel to toffee.

Thea said...

Not sure how I have missed these till now. Once I figured out that these were each supposed to taste different and it wasn't just me, I really enjoyed them. Too bad I missed the coffee flavor :(
