July 27th: Hershey's Milk Duds

Kcal 170 Fat 6.0g Fat(sats) 3.5g Carbs 28.0g (per 13 pieces 39.0g)

What with the cinema season being in full swing at the minute (Dark Knight & Wall-E are both must sees!!) when CandyPirate told me they were sending these across I couldn't help but appreciate their appropriateness, as from what I hear these milk chocolate coated caramels are quite the popular US cinema snack. Speaking of US candy and the cinema, Jeanna over at Wisconsin Candy has been doing some great combined reviews of films and candy...most notbably this review on the Reese's Whoppers - check it out if you have a minute.

I recieved these Milk Duds in a 114g pack which I ate over two sittings - neither of which left me feeling that satisfied. The chocolates came in a yellow cardboard box as you can see above - that packaging aside the Duds litterally sat in the box rattling around loosely. Personally I think an extra inner layer of packaging would have helped keep freshness and maybe have helped the issue of some of them sticking together. The Duds themselves were about the size of a £1 coin though many were odd shaped and misfigured - they also had a not so great looking dusty surface coating. After opening the box I couldn't detect a very evident smell...a very minor sweet smell lingered but was hardly forthcoming.

At first I ate these singly though it wasn't long before I was shovelling several in my mouth at a time. Im not going to beat around the bush...the milk chocolate coating was awfully poor. Texturewise it was much like its appearance suggested lumpy and grainy - it just felt gritty on my tongue. It wasn't very impactful flavourwise either - it tasted very mundane offering little more than a gritty milk flavour...it really lacked a chocolatey edge. The caramel centres fortunately offered a little more than the poor chocolate coating. The texture of the caramels started as being quite firm and resistant to the bite - though once in the mouth and left on the tongue, softened to have more of a chewy feel. Caramels are very easily made overly sweet though thankfully these didn't have this particular problem. Again like the product in general they were not the most compelling tastewise; they did have a nice buttery flavour that was alogether great tasting, however it just wasn't potent or strong enough to really provide any satisfaction. What this culminated in was a situation that often occurs when I eat Malteasers and that was finding myself eating several at a time in order to achieve a flavour hit of some worth.

Overall its easy to see why these are such a popular cinema snack..they fit the bill 100%. To me the epitome of cinema food is that its bassically grazing food - snacks with very little taste that you can simply sit down and munch through for a good hour and a half. Though they fit the situation in this sense they do not fit the bill as a great tasting option. The milk chocolate had a poor grainy texture and offered a very minor milky taste. The caramel centres had a nice buttery sweet taste though just wern't impactful on the tastebuds. I wouldn't go as far as recommending these but if your visiting the cinema soon and are bored of your Maltesers and Revels these could be worth you seeking out to at least sample.

Yep, I think you hit it right on the head. Milk Duds are the snack when you don't really care what you're eating. By no means bad, but nothing terribly special.

They're very popular in movie theaters. Whenever I think of them, it reminds me of a Simpsons episode where Homer asks a concession stand employee to put butter on his Milk Duds. The funny part the scene may not be the most palatable for a candy review page. Thanks for the review!

Justin I was going to refer to these as 'garbage dispenser candy' but I think that would have shown them in a too poorer light...what I mean by that is you could literally eat... and eat... and eat... these up all day.

I seriously cant envisage a time when I could be satisfied by these.

CandyPirate did inform me that these were 'THE' choice of chocolate snack for most people to have at the cinema in America and are actually not that readily avalible outside of the cinemas!??

I guess they just have such massive mass appeal due to their taste being really quite friendly and not extreme in any area. I guess they must be being eaten by the bucketfull at the minute with the great films on at the box office at the minute!

The best movie tied in candy I have had simply has to be the Reese's Dark Knight Bats you sent across! Absolutely delish!

I absolutely love the Simpsons but im failing to remember that scene. If you find a link you simly have to share it!

Cheers for the input matey!

I didn't like this at all,
and yet at the same time, I still ate the whole package over two days.

Funny that.

Laura lol im glad im not theonly one who found that with these...it seems pretty a pretty common thing with these that you just simply cant stop eating them although they hardly great tasting! Rather like the crisps Pringles...just in chocolate form! Just out of intrest..(im assuming your UK based!!) where did you get these from??

Thanks for the comment

You know Jim a popular way to eat them at the movies here is to actually pour some into your bag of popcorn.

I have never personally done it because I am a popcorn purist but I do know several people who swear by the combo.

GiGi Sounds like something I guess I would try...im a bit of a salted popcorn fan myself but could see how it could equally work with sweet or toffee coated.

Something I really didnt get last time I was in the States was 'butter' flavoured popcorn :S :S lol what the hell!? How can you add butter to popcorn! Wont it make it go all soggy!!

Anyways I think your suggestion of eating these with popcorn could defo be something to try...its not as if theres going to be any clashes of strong flavours! Maybe the subtle nature of both could turn out to be quite a synergy!!....good word that!!! SYNERGY :D

Thanks for the input Gi

The Simpsons is one of my fav tv shows. The episode was the Tomacco episode (where Homer moves the family to a farm and grows a mutated tomato/tobacco plant). I couldn't find a youtube of it, but here's a link with the quote it's the 4th one down:

Gigi has it, you pour them into the popcorn, which is kind of what Homer was doing. Sort of. The combined taste of salt, butter, and melting chocolate and caramel is the ultimate movie going and milk dud experience.
They taste better than they're getting credit for, and remember these are not candies about the chocolate, but about the caramel and nostalgia and being a kid and such.
I think I'm going to do a misunderstood by my fav Brit Bloggers candy post.

I love the Tomacco episode, I think its called "E-I-E-I (Annoyed Grunt)" :D Anyway, my brother sent me a pack of these, they seem a bit like Toffee Poppets to me! I havent eaten them yet.
Its Simon :)

Simon Thats a great comparison actually! They are indeed an awful lot like Toffee Poppets...though I seem to remember not liking them all that much either I tdefinately prefer the toffee used in the Paynes' version.

Let me know what you think when you have tried them! will be great to hear your opinoin on them

Cheers

When I had a Curly Wurly for the first time, I thought they tasted like Milk Duds.

Rosa I would definately agree with you that the caramel has a very similar butteryness sweetness and slightly chewy texture...for me though the Cadbury chocolate coating is a tad better though - I just really couldnt get over the lack of flavour from the chocolate in the Milk duds!

Thanks for the input its a really good comparison for us UK folk!
