July 5th: Terry's Chocolate Orange Milk

Kcal 210 Fat 12.0g Carbs 23.0g

I dont quite know why its taken me so long to get round to reviewing one of Britain's most iconic brands of chocolate...but by popular request today I went about putting that right and sampled the most famous milk chocolate and orange combination out there...yes...Terry's Chocolate Orange.

Terry's Chocolate Orange tends to really come into its own around Christmas time but during the rest of the year its also pretty readily avalible. Im basing todays review on the 40g bar which split into 6 segments...it equated to 40.0g and did a perfectly good job of setting aside my hunger at the time...by the sixth segment I felt like I had my fill of the flavour.

I was genuiney very impressed by the look of the bar. The packaging was a fair in design though hardly original and almost identical from Mcvities Jaffa Cakes (Take a look above and try tell me otherwise!!!!!). The bar itself looked great - the segment design not only looked class and unique but was a nice way to split it into sizeable mouth size pieces - good work here by Kraft.

As soon as I opened the wrapper and segmented the bar a fruity sweet orangey smell was extremely evident - it smelt refreshing and pretty appertising though a tiny bit artifical. The back of pack had a pretty bold statement in that it claimed the bar was flavoured with 'Real Orange'....in actual fact just like the Montezuma's "Orangutang" I reviewed the other day the flavour was achieved using 'orange oil'....so not real orange really.

Although solid milk chocolate the inside of the bar seemed to have a slightly softer texture. Each segment was shaped perfectly to slowly melt on the tongue and really helped achieve a nice smooth and consistant taste. The orange flavour of the bar was strong but never overbearing...it gave each segment a nice refreshing taste that for my liking was just the right strength and and concentration. The milk chocolate as I said was glorious in texture though lacked a real difinitive cocoa flavour that would have really made this bar standout. The taste of the chocolate was very sweet and by the fifth segment its flavour was starting to become overly so and and verging on sickly.

Overall this bar is a genuinely a great tasting one in moderation. This bar has scored higher than the Montezuma's "Orangutang" and costs a fraction of the price at 40p compared to £1.20 for the Montezuma's. Its orange flavour was among the best I have tried on Chocolate Mission along with the Lindor Orange. The chocolate was a bit on the sweet side and lacking in cocoa strength though the orange flavour more than made up for this as its fresh fruityness was by far and away the dominating flavour. Terry' Chocolate Orange is a brand that will stay with us a long time..its affordable, unique, great looking chocolate...a sure fire winner if your a fan of chocolate orange.

8.3 out of 10

These are very nice indeed, but I have to agree with you on it becoming quite sweet and sickly by the time you get to the last segment.

The packaging is attractive, but it doesn't have the stress release factor of whacking the spheres. I've never actually tried the chocolate but the commercials around Christmas make it look like fun. Thanks for the review!

Gemma They are terribly sweet but something else I did enjoy which I forgot to mention was the longevity of the orange flavour...the flavour seemed to stay in my mouth for ages...its great tasting so you cant argue with that :D

Justin I know I know I am doing it a slight misjustice eating it like this in the bar form but those full on balls are quite hefty and tht would have meant me throwing most of it away as I only get to have thinggs once before moving on to the next...and thats just a waste! I wasnt aware these were avalible in the US thats nice to know! If you ever do get around to trying it please let me know what you think!

Thanks for the comments :)

I think I must be the only who doesn't find them as sweet as others have mentioned. Yes, they can be quite sicking after a couple of bars, but sweet, not really.

This is personally my favourite chocolate bar, I give it 9.2/10!

I love Chocolate Orange :D
Jim have you tried the Honeycomb (?) Chocolate Orange Bar (you can also get this variety in the Segsations box) or the Toffee Crunch one?
For some reason I think the middle bit of the orange is even nicer than the segments.

Hutchy I wa very impressed with this bar when I tryed it the other day...even more so now I have tried a supposed gourmet bar of chocolate orange in the Hotel Chocolat which was not as good.

For the price you just cant argue with what you get here. Its worth of its decent score. Glad you enjoyed the review!

Anon Your requests have been noted and I will pick up one of each of those varities nxt time im in Woolies - ive seen them both in there before!! Look for those reviews back end of next week! Thanks for the suggestions :) leave your name next time ;)

This is one of my favourite chocolates. I always buy a tin of segsations at Xmas and I like all of the different varieties. I even saw a mint one the other day but this just sounded all wrong to me!

I'm pretty sure orange doesn't feature in it at all. I found this picture online:

Not sure if you can get it in a bar. I'll keep a look out and let you know if I see one

Pip Hmm looks intresting to say the least - if it does contain orange its going to be one hell of a flavour...different to say the least! The onyl bars forms for TCO have been the Milk and honeycomb ones so i will probably have to buy this in the sphere form! Anyway thanks for sharing the picture - at least we know what it looks like now! Great work!

Thanks again

ive always liked chocolate oranges and the bars, its nice to see the dark variant around much more in shops again, for years they were very hard to find. you wouldnt think they were over 80 yrs old would you.! its interesting that they started life as a chocolate apple - given the varieties now they might stand more chance lol

cheers

Not all of the Terry's range is great! But as far as standard chocolate orange goes for the price it really is something!!

Cheers

I finally found one of these! But it was the type shaped like an actual orange. It brought back overwhelming nostalgia for my (once) favorite childhood chocolate, "Amul Orange". I can't think of much wrong with Terry's -- except that the shape made it easier for my family to nick extra slices without me noticing (besides the ones I authorized). That they dared do so is enough said :)

PS This will probably get caught in the spam trap lol..but it has more info about Indian chocolates, like the local favorites("Nilgiri/Ooty" here) as well as commercial ones' different ingredient ratios to keep them solid. The gigantic Indian market for decent chocolate is still largely untapped. Dove should go for it - their wrapper fortunes especially would be a great hit.

These do traditionally come as Chocolate Oranges, so I'm not surprised to hear you found it in that format.

Don't worry your second message didn't get caught up :D The Indian market is there to be tapped isn't it.

It must look like an attractive investment for one of the more established companies. The emerging markets are going to be the cash cows for companies like Cadbury/Mars going forwards.
