February 23rd: Thorntons Whipped Fudge Bar

Kcal 190 Fat 9.9g Fat(sats) 6.7g Carbs 23.9g

My review of the M&S fudge bar last month gave one of my readers (Stu) the urge to leave a comment regarding his love for Thorntons' attempt at this part of the market. In his comment Stu remarked that he believed the bar was now out of production, however walking into my local Thorntons last week I found this 'Whipped Fudge Bar', which I guess may even be the one he was talking about. Consisting of a 'fudge centre, with a ribbon of caramel covered in milk and dark chocolate', it struck me as an interesting prospect - would the extra sweetness of the caramel be a worthy addition? ... there was only one way to find out!

Although not stated on the actual product, by my calculation the bar weighed in at approximately 40.0g. The packaging was in the standard Thorntons style, with a matted type wrapper that combined both qualities of freshness and an aesthetically pleasing look. I liked the appearance of the bar, although not the greatest in terms of size, the shot of caramel that was consistent throughout struck me as particularly tempting with its magnificent golden colour and oozing effect once the bar was bitten into. The combination of the sweet scents from the fudge and dairy led cocoa aromas made for what was an enticing smell - I was really looking forward to getting stuck in to this one.

A real strength of the M&S fudge bar I reviewed last month was the way in which the chocolate melted into the softer fudge layer. This was consistent with this bar, but it also had the addition of the gooey caramel at the centre of each bite, which saved the fudge from becoming overly dry in the mouth. The presence of the dark chocolate was really non apparent in the taste, to be honest decoration aside it was really a non-factor. The actual milk chocolate coating however was particularly pleasant, and substantiated a host of milky, cocoa flavours that were not only instantly imposing but also lasting. Below the chocolate the fudge centre was equally as tasty with a fantastically sweet, buttery clotted cream like taste. Further adding interest to the texture of the fudge, the caramel brought a terrific syrupy, saltiness to the equation .... yum yum yum. The mixture of all these different elements certainly made for a compelling, moreish taste; it must be said though, the resulting sweetness did mean that the entire bar was flirting with being a tad over bearing and sickly.

Overall this in my opinion, from what I have reviewed so far, is the king of the fudge bars on the market. It combined all of what was great about the M&S fudge bar, and added a fantastic caramel element to further add diversity in both taste and textures. If I was to have to recommend a chocolate, fudge product based on the present market this would have to be the one. This bar has got me thinking though ... Cadbury ... yes you CADBURY!! Take note please ... take the Cadbury Fudge Bar ... double it in size ... add some Cadbury Caramel .... Wooolah - now that would be something special! Need I say more!?

I really like these too. Thorntons do bags of chocolate covered fudge which uses the same centre as the bar, but it doesn't have the caramel so I find them a bit monotomously sugary. The caramel really helps.

Indeed the caramel is an inspired inclusion here!

I am currently making my way though your requested Thorntons Choc Chip Choccies look out for that review soon!

Wow. When I first saw the picture I thought it looked delicious, then I read your review and I'm watering at the mouth! Fudge bars are one of my all time favourite little treats, or should I say 2 fudge bars are, because they're so small. This looks absolutely delightful and from how highly you praise it this is honestly going to be a must try bar.
Thornton's do beautiful chocolates, however their bars never really amaze me, I really want to see how this one fairs.
Awesome Jim!

Cadbury Fudge bars are fantastic, but they are just too small! If they were to release a bar similar to this one in size and with Cadbury Caramel down the middle .... WOW ... we can only dream!

Again let me know what you think if you try it!
Cheers

All right Jim! Cheers for the name-check - I did indeed used to love the Thorntons Fudge Whip, which was handy as it meant I could go into the shop day after day and talk with the cute girl behind the counter ;)

While the Fudge Whip of old was a different bar - different packaging, no caramel (no, hang on, it's not too bad!) and wider in shape (and heavier I'd bet!). As I say, it was wider, but flatter too, which I think kept it from being too dry - let the air get into it nicely.

But that's gone now, and I'll certainly be trying this new version as soon as I can. It was strange that they ever had gap in this range, as there has always been one like this in their selection boxes.

Cheers Jim, good work as ever.

Damn not quite the one eh!? Oh well at least it made me try this superb bar ... so you still get credit for the recommendation :)

I wish there were fit girls behind the counter in my Thorntons ... we just have some weird looking, rather camp fella ... hes a bit odd lol!

Cheers for the 'recommendation' anyway mate

Recommendation, now revelation! I went into Thornton's today, seeking out a Whipped Fudge - but to no avail. The young lady behind the counter did her best to help me - double checking to make sure there weren't any in, suggesting other fudge items in the store, and - shock! - suggesting that I try Marks and Spencer, as their range of chocolates was produced by Thornton's! What bearing does this have on your reviews?!

I think if you check out one of my latest M&S reviews I do remark on that ;) The M&S fudge was good ... this one was better!! Justified :D

Wow Jim!
I had my bar last night and seriously... wow!
The thing that really amazed me is the fact that even though this bar would usually be deemed quite small in my eyes, was that it was actually satisfying!
I loved the softness, and you're so spot on with the way the chocolate melts and blends into the fudge.
The only thing I would comment on about this bar is the fact that the caramel shot through the middle may not have been prominent enough, however, I think it did complete the delicious texture of this bar.
A seriously lovely chocolate bar! I have to agree Jim, it's the best fudge bar I have ever had!
Nicely done Jim.

Indeed, until the day Cadbury make a proper sized fudge this one is the best out there I reckon!

Cheers, glad you enjoyed it!

I tried my local Thorntons but they don't carry this :( In fact, the girl there told me that they'd discontinued a lot of their chocolate bars about 2 months ago...she doesn't know why.

Jim said...

Thea I'm shocked to hear that. I personally think it was one of the better bars they made. Shocking decision.

Thea said...

She did say she wasn't 100% positive they'd discontinued this particular bar...I'll still keep an eye out :)

Phew getting rid of this bar would have been one of their grandest errors yet. This is one of the best bars they make in my opinion.

Thanks for the info

JIM
