Kcal 555 Fat 33.0g Fat(sats) 14.5g Carbs 56.6g (per 100.0g) I am a big fan of our the Nestle Milkybar here in the UK so when Dean-German-Grocery kindly included this Nestle Die Weisse bar in my latest sampling package I was looking forward to seeing how it matched up. Described as 'Fine Swiss White Chocolate' I was a little bemused to see that the product was actually produced in Frankfurt, Germany ... there was of course some blurb on the back, but not being able to speak/read German I couldn't ascertain anything from it.
The bar came in a 100.0g form that I ate in three portions. The packaging was highly reminiscent to the Milkybar packaging with the same cream and red colours predominant. The chocolate was pretty plain in its presentation, though the foil layer and imprinted Nestle logos did give it a slight touch of class. I was extremely impressed with the smell of the chocolate and found the sweet, vanilla essence like aromas particularly tempting.
I guess unsurprisingly this bar tasted extremely like the UK Nestle Milkybar, but it did have a few slight touches that ultimately made it preferable. As with our UK bar, the chocolate was really quite sweet and made for a product that was best consumed in small doses. It seemed with this bar that the vanilla element played a greater role in the taste, which meant that with the longer melt duration it made for a longer lasting flavour impact in the mouth. The texture was wonderfully silky, and had an extra thick creaminess to its melt that complimented the delightful progression of the milky flavours. Each piece provided a smooth taste that I would describe as a little more mellow than our sharper, sweeter Milkybar.
Overall as aforementioned this is not a chocolate you would want to eat in large quantities, however in small amounts it really is a delightful white chocolate option. In a blind taste test I would be very confident distinguishing this from the Milkybar, as the vanilla flavours were just that little bit more pronounced and lasting in what was a thicker melting texture. Personally I would have to say I prefer this to our UK product, if your a white chocolate fan this is one really worth checking out.

I have given up chocolate for lent, so looking at your blog is pleasure, but also so much torture right now! Although I can't wait for the Easter 09 reviews, so that I know what I can just scoff up come Easter Sunday =D.
Heidi

I would never give up choolste for Lent! It's like going 40 days without water; it's a necessity! Good luck I suppose.
As you know Jim, I'm a massive whit choc fan! This seems to have rated quite highly for a plain choc product as well, so it must be good! I'm defo going to give this a try;
Nice one Jim!
;) I did it last year too, when I was able to eat chocolate again, man, I remember the feeling... I had just finished my uni final year dissertation (I don't know how I coped trying to do that without choc) and then I could eat chocolate again all at the same time - a bag of minstrels never tasted so good! I would recommend that you try it, but I guess Jim's blog would be under a bit os disrepair if he tried!!

Indeed I don't think the blog would fair too well if I gave up chocolate for Lent :) maybe one day eh!? ... just not in the near future :)
I look forward to both our opinions once you have tried this!
Cheers

I've only once tasted white chocolate I liked—the Badger Claw—but maybe in very small portions.
That fudge cake bar though...drool.

Good quality white choc is out there! It is just a matter of finding it in and amongst all the rubbish! You have mentioned these Badger-Claws a few times now! They sound a must!
Jim
For some reason there is nothing I love more than trashy white chocolate. The cheaper and more sugar laden the better! Is this morally wrong of me? Tesco value is good, in paticular the "white strawberry crunch". But please do ignore me, I realise I am alone in this guilty pleasure!
Lottie
Whats that I read....
Lottie said "Jim you must try Tesco's cheap white chocolate"
hmmmm ... ok then I will buy some and dedicate that review to you :D :D haha!! You know how I love cheap tasting white choc :)
Jim
This looks very similar to Nestle 'Galak' white chocolate you sometimes see in cheap shops. I always preferred it over our milkybar, I think its better quality too as milkybar contains added things like vegetable fat and whey solids, wheras pure white chocolate shouldnt. From what I recall, Galak didnt have vegetable fat or whey solids.

I try not to get preoccupied with ingredients too much as I would probably get scared about eating some of the stuff I do if I looked at every product :)
Quality of ingreidents is important for sure though! It seems nowadays manufacturers are increasingly slipping more and more vegetable fats/whey solids into their products it is really something we should all start looking at.
Thanks for the heads up on this! Interesting stuff!
Jim
P.s. Leave your name next time ;)
Sorry about that Jim, I use the net at the library so work so quickly I usually click the anon button!
Im not too fussed on ingredients either but I think with white chocolate its always the case that the more whey powder and vegetable fat, the poorer the taste.
Phil
No problem - just always nicer to know who I am talking to :)
I have to agree with you there! I just reviewed a white choc today that contained neither of those and it was utterly superb ... unfortunately you wont see that review until April 15th ... bit ahead of myself you see :)
Cheers

As far as white chocolate goes I have to say Hotel Chocolate have it sussed.
Apparently this original ("das original") was 'NEU mit Mandeln' (new version with almonds-?) around August 1987.

This definitely didn't have almonds in it! If you look at the first bar on the left (one I tried!!) then look 2nd in from the left you can just make out an almond nut on the packaging!!
I would like to try this version mind!
Good find!
Jim
on a dark chocolate/almond/hazelnut aside, if you haven't reviewed Latvian chocolate bars you owe it to yourself to try to obtain these. I can't remember the brand right off but I rather enjoyed them while there.
and on another complete aside, why does anyone give up anything on lent, especially dark chocolate? to my gut it smacks of heresy... like if your dad gives you a new porsche for your 18th birthday AND buys you a house but you've got to say "gee I feel I need to give you something back... here's a dollar" -- seems a bit self-important... if anything I'd EAT DARK CHOCOLATE for lent in the expression of BEING THANKFUL (maybe that's what Easter / resurrection days are for ... the thankfulness.)
Anyway -- I should be careful in dragging religion into dark chocolate but this is a big chocolate day... if you gave up chocolate for lent Bless You and enjoy some now for Easter!
David
errr thanks ... I will sure try some of those Latvian chocs.
Cheers
Jim
