June 7th: Hannah's White Mice

Kcal 530 Fat 29.0g Carbs 65.0g (per 100.0g)

I am probably going to attract some criticism for this review as I know that 'White Mice' have a cult following here in the UK. Indeed, as a child I consumed them on mass - they were always a common and prominent feature in my pick-a-mix bag when I was a wee one. Unfortunately (or maybe not!!), everyones main source of 'White Mice', Woolworths, is now no more. Shopping in my local Tesco last Sunday however I stumbled across a pack produced by Hannah's .... would these be a lovely trip down nostalgia road ... or a hellish 'never to eat again' product!??

The bag I found in Tesco contained 85.0g of 'White Mice' ... I would say under half that actually got eaten. The outer packaging was very simplistic and didn't do a very good job of maintaining the product. You may be able to make out in the picture above that the pieces had particularly dusty surfaces which gave the impression they were not all that fresh. In regards to aroma I was also not very impressed - the smells that emanated from the bag seemed very artificial in their sweetness and had a rather fake vanilla hint.

You have probably peeked at the score already so I won't beat around the bush ... these were HORRIBLE ... and I mean HORRIBLE in every sense. Studying the blurb on the back of the packet it turns out that these were not white chocolate at all, but white chocolate flavour candy. One look at the ingredients and it was no wonder that the taste was sickeningly sweet and artificial considering they were solely made of 'sugar, vegetable fat, whey powder, emulsifier and flavourings' ...EUGH!! Not only did they taste awful in their overbearing sugaryness, but they had a rough, uncompromising melt which just to top everything left my throat feeling like it was literally on fire. Suffice to say I was left wondering what had come of my once loved 'White Mice'.

Overall these are frankly the WORST ... yes the WORST product I have had the displeasure of reviewing in my whole year of writing for this site. I know people are going to criticise me as these no doubt hold a place in a lot of hearts, but frankly they tasted terrible and after no more than three pieces were inedible due to the artificial ingredients tearing up the back of my throat. These are made with cheap ingredients, taste cheap ... yet aren't cheap anymore (65p for a bag!). I would honestly think twice before reaching for a bag of these ... leave your childhood memories untarnished.

Oh dear, I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. Which makes me wonder: do children actually have a different taste, as at the time you seemed to enjoy them, or were those actually of a better quality?

Hey Jim

It's funny but I was never a fan of the chocolate mice in pic n mixes, they just tasted horrible to me, like these do lol i always wondered back then why they couldnt make nice tasting ones. I used to like the small chewy white and pink ones that no one seems to remember lol

Didn't you try some Hannahs Jazzles a while back? they were horrible too werent they! lol

cheers

Ewww definately one to avoid then.

Don't you think lots of white choc gets your throat like that?

Have you tried wagon wheels Jim - they have a chocolate flavour coating, never had one just wondered if they were vile too?!

I think when your younger your able to tolerate sweeter foods - but still these were like straight up sugar! I still think they were the same sort of product - I guess I just didn't know any better!!

Alan

I certainly did review the Jazzies

I can't remember those white and pink ones! They being sold on the net anywhere?

Tatt

I haven't got round to reviewing a wagon wheel yet! I used to have them as a kid as well! Loved them in fact! I think my work sell them so I will make sure I buy one this week! Review will likely be up in a few weeks or so!

Cheers everyone

I do like white chocolate, but when it comes to very artificial white chocolate like these... yuck! I also used to eat stuff like this as a child. I loved pick and mixes. But now... I guess my tastes have just matured or something :P

Alan - I remember the white and pink chewy ones! They were brilliant :)

I never liked these even when I was little, they have such a gross aftertaste that somehow seems to penetrate all through your throat and nasal passages for about a year after eating them. And they're so gritty and mank.
Does anyone remember the icecream thingys you could get in pick n mix? They had a sort of caramac "wafer" bit and strawberry flavour white chocolate "icecream" bit. Probably more of a confection than actual chocolate but I had a real thing for them. They'd make up about 85% of my pick n mix bag at least.

I've looked on the net for the pink and white chewy mice but have never found them, the pink ones were strawberry i think, and were really rather nice. I heard you can still buy them but I don't know where.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers them Gemma :) lol

Seems like our tastes have developed the same way! I suggest you stay well clear of these!

Lottie

I remember those ice cream cones! They were also faves of mine when I was little though I think they may suffer from the same problem these white mice and be too sweet for me now! Its funny Pick-a-mix really doesn't seem to be that popular any more :(

Alan

Let us know if you do find them! I am intrigued!

Lucy

I wouldn't say Im wrong - more that our opinions differ!

Thanks

Jim, you're at the wrong university then! We have a huge pick-and-mix offer on campus (Birmingham), and it's very popular with students - you somehow have to make those library hours interesting... Must check whether they have white mice.

As of to fridays ago I can no longer classify myself as a student :(

That said my Uni book shop did used to have a small pick-a-mix selection! What I meant earlier was that P-A-M doesn't seem to be so special to kids anymore - when I was young it was one of the highlights of my week heading down to the newsagents to stock up on milk bottles and Jazzies! Gone are the times :(

Thanks - this site has been very busy today! People seem to have strong opinion on White Mice - its great hearing from you all!

morrisons now have pick and mix and wen i went on holiday last week, the camp site we stayed on had a massive selection which included both sorts of jazzies, the ice cream cones, the porky pigs (same texture as white mice but strawberry) and white mice (loads more but my lot mainly consisted of them!!), i was astonished that a camp site did them, wish more places did them as morrisons only has a small selection, there is a sainsburys that i no of which dus them aswell, i think i may have to have a look @ them. i have seen the pink and white mice (mixed), but they arent chewy :S, they basically strawberry mice and white mice, i do want to try the milk chocolate mice thou!!!

What a random place to have P-A-M! Seemingly P-A-M is a thing of the past for newsagents nowadays. I will have a look to see if I can get hold of any more P-A-M favourites! This review today seems to spark a lot of interest so I will be sure to get some more reviews up soon!

Cheers

Ergh, I never liked white mice. Have you ever tried 'skullcrusher' Jim? It's made of that similar 'white confection' stuff as white mice, in the shape of a skull, with a strawberry cream centre. I've only ever seen them once, from what I recall they were better than white mice but still not very nice.

Jim's Chocolate Mission said...

Emma

Count me in with the strawberry bon bons - unfortunately I just don't share your love for white mice / jazzies! Hope you enjoyed them though :)

Phil

Not a fan either eh! :) I have seen those skull crushers before but was never keen on them due to the strawberry centres! Frankly having tried these I am staying well clear of the fake white chocolate! My throat is still in recovery from the burning :)

Thanks
Jim

Man, I'm a little late to the White Mice party now... I bought a pack of these today, expecting the worse. But I was pleasantly surprised. Extremely sweet, milky, and kind of biscuitty. Maybe it's because I was deprived of sweets when I was a kid (my mum was the carrot stick type) but I really did enjoy these in all of their artificial crappiness.

You can never be too late to the party here :) I am glad to hear that you enjoyed these - it is obvious people still do as they wouldn't still make them otherwise! Just out of interest do you have a fave white chocolate?

Cheers
