October 31st: Cadbury Wispa Gold - ***Original Post*** September 7th 2009

*** UPDATE - October 31st 2011 ***

Kcal 265 Fat 15.1g Fat(sats) 9.0g Carbs 29.1g

I don't suppose you will have heard, but the Olympic Games are coming to London in 2012 :D Though I'm sure we are all going to grow weary of the Olympic themed marketing campaigns awaiting us, the upsides are undoubedtly going to be just as strong. Even before the big 2012 year is upon us, one of the main London 2012 sponsors has given us all a right treat - the return of one of ChocolateMission's all time favourites - the Cadbury Wispa Gold (Announcement HERE).

The Wispa Gold is indeed back in town and it has returned in the same 52.0g size of the bar we had in 2009. The wrapper has changed a little since last in marker, with the same gold foil textured wrapper having a larger emphasis on the 'GOLD' aspect of the branding to align it to the Olympic theme. The bar itself appeared consistent from previous, with the viscocity and volume of the caramel as generously flowing and appetising looking as ever.

Eagle-eyed JCM readers will have noted the minor changes in the nutritional information supplied with the 2011 bar. Recipe changes of course have to be the cause of this - JCM reader Alan has pointed to the loss of milk powder from the chocolate, and the loss of the condensed milk from the caramel as the cause and effect. So what has this done to the taste!? Well speaking as someone who was looking for differences I would say there was a noticeable edge taken away from the caramel. It had a more subtle flavour delivery - less sugary, but also less creamy and forthcoming. Speaking as someone who was analysing this all with great attention, I feel the need to stress that I expect 99.9% of people aren't going to notice (or care haha!) any differences.

Regardless of any minor changes to the caramel recipe, in my opinion this still remains one of the best chocolate bars ever made. Lets hope London 2012 brings Team GB as many gold medals as I plan to eat Cadbury Wispa Golds before the games are up. Out of everything Cadbury have done for us Games related so far, this has been by far and away their best decision.

Way back in May Cadbury issued a press release confirming the return of the Cadbury Wispa Gold for a limited time for September 2009 (HERE). That almost seems like decades ago now but the time has come upon us for the bar to make its hopefully triumphant return. Seemingly Sainsbury's have got the exclusive on this bar and I managed to track one of these down in my local shop a full week ahead of its official release date (September 14th). Before I launch into the the review itself I have to hand it to the marketing department at Cadbury. Without use of any TVC or any official press ads (yet!) they have managed to create a lot of 'buzz' about the Wispa Gold and this was all to evident when I actually witnessed someone pick up a whole box when I was in Sainsbury's purchasing my seldom one. For those of you who are not UK based and are wondering what on earth this bar actually is, it is a 'textured milk chocolate bar with caramel' that got cruelly taken out of distribution a few years ago - as you have probably gathered it has been brought back as a limited edition by Cadbury for a limited period.

Lets get down to business! In line with the original Wispa bar this limited edition Gold came in a 52.0g size that certainly did its job in providing a fulfilling snack. You can probably tell already this is going to be a review full of praise but I really have to hand it to Cadbury for the wrapper - it looks awesome. The wrapper incorporates everything that it should do and I think it's fun, clean and jazzy gold look suits the Wispa brand down to the ground. As impressed as I was with the packaging I was even more glad to see the gooey caramel oozing out enticingly when I split it in half. I will keep the Kit Kat Caramel Chunky low blows to a minimum but I think there is only one winner in terms of looks when you look at the photo above compared to the paste like substance used in the aforementioned. In addition to the seductive looking golden caramel my senses were treated to the lovely familiar Cadbury chocolate smells when I split open the foil wrapper; at this point I really felt like I was in for a treat and I wasn't wrong.

As much as I was enjoying marvelling at the wrapper and taking in the tempting Cadbury aroma there was only one thing left to do and I needed no second invitation getting stuck right in. One thing I was really looking forward to was being reunited with the feel of the airated chocolate and caramel in the mouth. To cut right to the point it felt like an absolute dream and had one of the most fantastic melts in the mouth which combined the bubbly melting chocolate and luxuriously soft caramel with great effect. As amazing as the textures were the taste wasn't too far behind and the usual Cadbury chocolate flavours were substantiated within seconds producing the familiar well rounded chocolate and milk based taste. Of course supplementing the chocolate brilliantly was the caramel and it tasted as delicious as all other Cadbury caramel products. The caramel was portioned very generously comprising 35% of the bar and it brought all the expected elements of butterscotch, brown sugar and most importantly a tiny hint of salt to the taste. The only small downside to this bar I thought was that with the textures of the chocolate and caramel being as light as they were I did feel this ever so slightly detrimented the flavour longevity in the mouth. Frankly for me this was a minor issue as the whole 52.0g bar made for a more than satisfying experience that I enjoyed from my very first bite to the very last.

Overall I have to hand it to Cadbury here - they certainly didn't sell us short or cut any corners and they have ultimately delivered a bar that has given consumers exactly what they want. Way back when I started this site I came in for a bit of criticism for my review of the original Cadbury Wispa (HERE) which had just been brought back, as I basically regarded it as being very good but possibly lacking a certain something to make it really stand out from some of the best bars on the market. Having been reunited with the Wispa Gold I feel even more confident to stand by this review as it proved that what was just originally a very good bar, can be made into a superb one with the simple addition of caramel. As brilliant as this bar is would I choose it over the Cadbury Caramel? Most the time probably not - but that is only because I prefer the bar broken into chunks and the firmer Dairy Milk chocolate as opposed the airated milk chocolate used in this bar. Would I have this again? You bet I would! This is the best chocolate bar I have tried this year and lived up to all the high expectations that came with the hype. Cadbury are claiming this bar is only coming back as a limited edition but given how brilliant it tastes it wouldn't come as a surprise if this one ends up being around for the foreseeable future.

9.3 out of 10

I want one now but I don't have a sainsbury near ;( grrrrrrr

I'm glad to see you liked it as much as me Jim lol I also liked the wrapper and thought the whole thing put Nestles feeble Caramel KitKat Chunky to absolute shame! I've seen a few boxes of those cowering in shame at the end of a supermarket aisle, compared to the Wispa Gold which has pride of place, on the counter, in boxes and on the shelf!

Cadbury really know how to do caramel, and this was just as good as I remembered, the trick being they've never tampered with the recipe etc, which I've noticed these manufacturers tend to when they 'relaunch' something, so what you get is a feeble version of the original. I hope Cadbury bring this back for good, it deserves it!

Hi jim I am glad this got such a good score I was expecting it to do well. I have stockpiled 20 already I can see there being a lot of out of stocks soon. I suggest everyone grabs whilst they can.

Should be a perfect 10

Susanne said...

I share your praise. I also thought it's awesome and I can't imagine it really is only a limited edition - it's too good to be discontinued.

Golden_Touch said...

Yep like many of the rest I have had a few of these already. I thought the caramel was about a hundred times better than the crap they put in the KK Chunky Caramel. Great review, one of your best for a while.

george said...

Woah I was expecting good but not 9.3 i really must get one now.

xLuXLux said...

OMG it was exaclty how i remembered!!!!!! SO gooey, SO soft SOOOOOOO amazing. Thank YOU Cadbury xxxxxx

Eric said...

I was praying they would bring back the Mint before the Gold but I will make do with this for now. IMO it would not get such a good rating but i would settle for one nonetheless.

Shellbear said...

Cool site I found you searching for a place that sells Wispa Golds.

Did you buy yours online?

Gemma said...

Thank goodness it's returned! Can't wait to get one again. I hope it sticks around this time :)

Colin said...

Please don't get me wrong this bar was delicious but for 59p????? hmmmmmm perhaps I am just beeing stingey but I remember the days when it was 35p a mars bar.

Green_Tommy_K2000 said...

This used to be my chocolate of choice when I lived in the UK it is great to see you guys have it back again.
I will have to try get some imported I can almost taste the golden goodness I can see on my screen.

Alan said...

lol 59p? they're 65p in Sainsburys!lol which is a little expensive, but then most chocolate bars are at least 50p now. Wispa original are about 55p. However if theyre on a limited run, I'm forgetting the cost, and personally I'd definitely give it that score! lol

cinabar said...

You only bought one!?!?!

Anonymous said...

I concur with the above. Only one?????? I have 20+ sitting in my cuboard => =>

RussWWFC said...

I've had them the past 2 days running, 65p from Shell and then a mate got me one from his local today.

They are beautiful, deffo my fave bar at the moment

Jim said...

Blimey ... where to start :D Responses split into 2 parts!!

PART 1

Anon #1

I saw them in boots yesterday as well!

Alan

Really glad you enjoy ... every single detail of this bar is how I would have hoped. From wrapper to the caramel it is awesome. If the king of packaging is pleased then they must be doing something right eh!? :)

Rachel

I don't think there is a need to go overboard just yet! They have millions on these to sell.

Anon #2

Perfect 10? Nah not quite ;)

Susanne

I imagine the limited edition tag is being placed on there just to create the hype. I fully expect it to go how the Wispa did ... come in for a few month as a L/E .... go out of stock for a few.... then come back again as a permanent fixture.

GT

Thanks for your seal of approval I really appreciate your feedback.

george

They should be taking over the shops very soon.

Lu

Sounds like you think they did a good job then ;)

Eric

You can rate this bar yourself using the star system under my scoring chart. I would also love to see the Wispa Mint back.

Shellbear

No i got mine in Sainsbury's ... as it says in the first paragraph ;)

Gemma

So do I ... and I am pretty sure it will. I think everyone is going to recieve this warmly. It just does exactly what it says on the tin!!

Jim said...

Colin

Those days are long gone I am afraid. I think 59p is a reasonable proce myself. Anything above that and I could possibly start thinking otherwise!

Green Tommy

I hope you get reunited with this bar pal. I am pretty sure you will think it is as good as you remember.

Cin & Anon #2

Since I bought that one I have had literally truck loads of samples sent my way ... I am giving them away at the minute! I am everyones best friend :)

Russ

Nice to see you agree with my review buddy :) By the looks of it the pricing is 59p in normal outlets and 65p in the convenience stores (Sainsbury's local / Petrol stations etc!!)

Sarah

Be sure to let me know what you think of it. I am really interested in hearing peoples views!!

Thanks everyone - hell of a lot of feedback for just the one day! Keep it up

Jim

Yum, I remember having these as a kid, can't wait to pick one up.

poppet said...

I found one of these in a WHSmith shop at the weekend. Very exciting as I thought I would have to hunt them down in Sainsbury's.
Yummmmy, better than I remember :)
Even after a night in the fridge the caramel was deliciously melty and perfect.
It's good to see my fave chocolate reviewer was enamoured too.

Phil said...

Yummy, I found some at last and really enjoyed them. It makes a change to have a chocolate bar with so much caramel in it! I agree with Jim it's not quite as great as Dairy Milk caramel but it's a close second. Compared to most bars on the market I'd have to say it's the best one around.

RussWWFC said...

I prefer it to DMC by a long way and a lot better than the KitKat one which was a BIG dissapointment. By the way have you tried the Galaxy Cookies bar, I can recommend that one, not seen them many places though

Drew said...

Good god the caramel looks so good in that photo. I could go for one of these right now.

Claudia said...

I had one and it was goreous. Mmmmmmmh :D

Jim said...

Rachel

When you do pick one up please do let me know what you think!

Poppet

Aww thank you that is a very kind thing to say. It would great to hear from you more often. Thanks for letting us know they are out in WHSmith aswell!

Phil

Glad to know we are thinking along the same lines chap - I thought you would enjoy this one. As I said in the review if I had to choose between this and the CDM I would choose the latter but that doesen't not make this an outstanding bar in its own right! Thanks for letting me know what you think.

Russ

http://www.chocolatemission.net/2008/04/april-26th-galaxy-cookie-crumble.html .... take a look here chap! The search bar is your friend lol! I will be adding a 'Galaxy' tab soon to make those bars easier to find!

Drew

I hope you find one! As I say to one and all be sure to let me know what you think of it!

Claudia

Well we are thinking along the same lines aren't we :D

Thanks for the feedback on this bar everyone - please keep yor views coming!

sarah said...

well tried it tonight was so so nice, way better than cadburys caramel. just the right amount of caramel.

Javier said...

The caramel is so so so good. This is my choice of chocolate bar at the minute.

Alan said...

I've also spotted them in Superdrug at 55p and in Home Bargains, at about 48p each (comapred to 65p in Sainsburys!)

Chocolate reviews said...

I got mine for 55p from Superdrug too. There wasn't as much caramel as u thought there would be :-(

Jim said...

Sarah

I thought the caramel portioning was plentiful as well!

Javier

Haha I have had a few more since my review as well!

Alan

Cheers for the update! Still not in my local Co-Op or Tesco!

CR

Just look at your review - looks like the one you got was really lacking in caramel! What a shame huh!?

Thanks everyone
Jim

Anonymous said...

I got one a few days before the review was up, and was dead nervous that it wouldn't live up to my fond memories... I loved it! And its good to see others have as well. Come on Cadbury, we know you will keep it on (PLEASE)

JT2000 said...

Is this so special it gets a special colour on the leaderboard?

lottie said...

I know I am late to the wispa gold love-in, but I finally got hold of one and must enthuse. It truly is heaven encased in a gold wrapper. I'm not actually too fond of normal wispa, in the textured-chocolate genre I feel twirls/flakes work better, but somehow that bubbley texture just goes with the velvety caramel like a dream. It is awesome, and so very satisfying.
C'mon now cadbury, see the success of all the nostalgic re-runs,bring back the fuse! I'll be you're special friend 4eva if u do.

Jim said...

JT

I will sort that out! Woops!

Lottie

Ahhh the Fuse! That defo needs to be making a comeback soon. For the moment this Wispa Gold will suffice though, I have still had another few since this review and I fully stand by the high score it got! This is a bar brimming with Cadbury Caramel goodness and it is even grander when stuck in the fridge for a brief period!!

Thanks

Jim

Anonymous said...

I remember when this launched KK Chunky Caramel outsold it by 3 to 1 - so much for Cadbury supremacy....

Alan said...

@Anon - actually it was the other way round! The Wispa Gold outsold the Caramel KitKat by millions.

Jim, have you tried the newly relaunched Olympic Wispa Gold? I saw them today in Sainsburys, so bought a couple. For some reason I was curious as to whetehr theyd be the same, and I was rather annoyed to find the ingredients ahd changed! (I compared them on an old wrapper from last year). Theyve taken out the dried skimmed milk from the chocolate (so its normal recipe DM?), but theyve also added it to the caramel and taken away the skimmed condensed milk, which is what - i think - gives the caramel that lovely burnt sugary creamy golden taste. Theyve also altered the amounts of each ingredient, pushing the veg oil up a notch (in the caramel). It still tastes fine but not QUITE the same! The caramel isnt quite the same certainly :( Doesnt seem quite as - distinctive? Its hard to pinpont! You'll have to try one and do a comparison! Krafty Kraft!

Aaron said...

Why do these companies insist on changing things when they are just all perfect?
I bet you wont be the only person to notice a difference Jim. I will now you have said there is one lol.

Nick said...

I dont get why they keep taking it away in the first place? Whats the point of constantly taking one of your best bars out of the market for extended times. They must keep losing so much money.

Kim said...

"Sing aloud for team GB" ........ oh god. This is going to be annoying/disaster!

Steven_F said...

I cant remember where it said this but I believe its back for good now. Please dont hold me to that I could of just been dreaming it up.

Colin said...

Lol this reminds me of how stupidly excited I got when it came back out the first time. I bought one of those big boxes that the shops get sent (I think it had 24 in lol).

I wont be as mad for them this time but Im sure I will have my fair few lol.

Terry said...

Hats off to your old man J. That is one sexual looking chocolate picture. You have made me really want one of these now. Im going to have to wait until lunchtime to get one which sucks.

Golden_Touch said...

I think you approached this sensibly in that you reference that most people wont tell the difference. We on here probably do think bout these things in too much detail. I wouldn't be surprised at all if 99% of people dont even register that its any diff to what it was like before.

By the way you can add me to the list of people that would love seeing the Wispa Mint come back in some form. Its such a good bar, I've never understood why they have never had it come back.

Nigel said...

Hey J

What you make of all the footie this weekend then chap? You must of been happy with 3 points at Goodison. Its never straight forward going there, 1-0 says it was a hard result for your lot. Our 2-0 was as straight forward as they come. It wasn't even exciting to be totally honest about it.

I hope you haven't given me a complex about this bar now. Im going to be paying extra notice of the caramel now you have mentioned it :) lol I hope you havent pointed out something I wouldn't have noticed had I not read this on here this morning.

Cheers (maybe lol)

How long is it back out for then? lol in other words, when do we need to stock piling them again?

Stacey said...

Yay im so pleased to see them bring it back. There have been so many times in the last year when I have thought 'oooh I fancy a wispa gold' only to remember that they werent being sold. Im so looking forward to being able to buy them again now.

Emma said...

<3 <3 <3 Wispa Gold <3 <3 <3 I could eat them all day if you let me.

Alison said...

Hmmm its interesting to hear you think its different. I think I'm going to have to conduct my own in depth analysis in to this matter :) Its only fair isn't it :) Great pic btw Jim.

Pattra said...

I didn't have a clue that it was coming back so quickly! You wont believe how happy you just made me lol. Im so going out looking for one today. Nothing beats the wispa gold.

Daisy said...

This whole sing for GB lark sounds intolerable. Why don't Cadburys do something that doesn't tell us to do something for once ... 'play games', 'pick a team', 'sing for GB'. For gawds sake darlings just let us eat chocolate for heavens sake.

Fiona said...

The photo b4 was good, now this new one is even better :) The way the caramel is seeping out is just incredible looking. I want to scoop it all out and lap it all up yummmy.

Surge said...

I hope this isnt a sign of things to come with Kraft mucking around with the recipes of all the cadbury classics.
If they ever changethe recipe of dairy milk I will be furious.

THE.NEW.PICTURE=AMAZE .... that is all.

Lauren said...

Well i've only had the four so far =) =) It took me by total surprise when I saw them in sainsburys. There I was minding my own business and then my eyes latched on to that glorious gold wrapper. I think I may have even let out a little shrill of excitement. =) its so good its back.

Ross said...

Did you not think of re-scoring it? Is it still worthy of a 9.3 or has it got that much worse off.

Henry said...

Im so happy they have brung it back. The normal wispa is great but there is something about the wispa gold that makes it stand out from the rest .... lol probs the caramel duhhh!

Duncan said...

Jim give us a break lad. You cant tempt us with caramel pics like that whe we have only just started the week.

Robbie Els said...

Its about time it came back. I had one of those aero caramels and it just wasnt the same. Lol it wanted to be, but it wasnt even close.

Karen said...

Do you think im in dreamland hoping they bring back the wispa mint for the winter olympic games :) Lol It would make perfect sense if you ask me! Summer you get golden caramel and in winter you get white mint. Come on you know its going to happen :)

Alicia said...

Oh kill me now im supposed to be having a chocolate free week after the amount i ate last. I think I prefer wispa golds to anything even hotel chocolat make. Im obsessed with them.

Bryan said...

That caramel there looks soft and silky. If you ever get lumbered with any spares you could always send some stateside you know ;) I would be more than happy to do some sort of exchange with you.

Anonymous said...

That wrapper is so sparkly I like :)

Patrick said...

1st class review m8. Thanks for telling us its back :-)

Alan said...

Im glad Im not the only one to notice a difference even if it is minor..the caramel in your new one though looks better than mine did, mine was more Nestle like lol. You are right though, it is great to have it back, and its a million times better than the poor Aero Caramel (and kitkat caramel!). I wonder what theyd make of these in the US?

Claudia said...

Yum yum yum I want one! :D

I prefer the packaging of the 2009 bar, though! :P

Linzyloo said...

I've had 2 since they came back and both times I felt like there was something missing... it just wasn't as flavoursome as I remembered :(

Claudia said...

Also, I've just noticed that the caramel is still "joined up" in the new picture.

How on earth did you manage that? :P

Alan said...

@Claudia.. this isnt the permanent new wrapper, its just the Olympic wrapper. It will no doubt revert back to the normal one after. :)

Jim said...

Hi All

Most of you guys seem to be happy that the Wispa Gold is back on the market and im not surprised. Put the mini changes to the caramel aside it is still a remarkable chocolate bar - this is one we should be very thankful to have here in the UK, I get a lot of mail from people all over the world saying they want to try it.

For that reason I say we just embrace it for what it is and is why im adverse to changing the score on it for the minute.

Thanks for all the kind words about the pictures today. You are all indicating I should be making the old man redundant as it was actually my photography skills at work here not his :D He will be jealous when I tell him haha!

I unfortunately have plenty to be getting on with today so I will have to pick up some of the questions later on.

Happy halloween - bah humbug haha :D

BJ said...

Oh look, they've managed to increase the fat content, make it more unhealthy than before, and reduce the quality of the taste. Why do they do this? Whatever people say, change is not god.

Jane said...

Im going to get flamed for this but I couldn't give two fiddlesticks about this coming back.
a) If they know other people like it they shouldn't take it away in the first place
2) They should devote more time to creating new things rather than relying on the old reliables all the time. The new things they have done for 'stars vs stripes' have been pants. If they spent more time developing them and not just doing things willy nilly then they might make something new that lasts more then 5 minutes before being pulled.

Anonymous said...

Have they done the same to the caramel of the dairy milk bar then? I wonder why they would do that to it. Its doesn't sound like a good thing in any sense.

Toby said...

Are you not going to reappraise the 9.3 if it isn't as good!? i think you should do if you noticed a difference between the two.

Javier said...

Trust you to over analyse it. Just like it for what it is and stop being so ridiculously fussy.

Estelle said...

The caramel ooze you have captured there just looks darling. Want Want Want!!!

Gaz said...

I know some people will be annoyed they didn't make something new instead but im just happy the wispa gold has returned. If we aren't counting the wispa mint then its my all time fave. If they also brought back the mint I think I would die and go to heaven.

Lee said...

Am I the only one here that thinks it would be amazing if nestle came back with their own campaign based around the carramac? Theres loads of stuff they could do with it in regards to it being golden coloured and stuff.

Kimberley said...

I remember the day when a wispa used to cost 35 pence not 60!!! I know there is inflation bit thats just excessive now, they aren't that special.

Alan said...

@ Jane - I see what you mean but they have actually been releasing loads of new products lately, some better than others but new none the less.

When they released it as the limited edition they had no idea if it would do well or not, just like with the original Wispa. They now know its popular hence its permanent return.

In my opinion theres plenty of room for old discontinued favoruites alongside new bars, if there is a genuine liking for them and a real desire for them to come back, which with Wispa there certainly has been :).

@ lee - thatsa good point, unfortunately I dont think theres quite the same nostalgic appeal with a Caramac (much as I like them) esp since its stil being made. I agree tho that they could develop more Caramac products! Unfortunately Nestle arent great with 'relaunches' - they relaunched the Drifter but no one was aware it had been taken away lol

Hi Jim. I tried the Milky Way Caramel from CyberCandy the other day and wondered if you, as a fellow caramel-lover had tried it. My tastes are fairly unrefined, but a bar full of caramel is always a joy for me!
