February 10th: Easter Super Post - Battle of the Bunnies

Ladies and Gentlemen ....... LETS GET READDDDDDDY TO RUMMMMMMMBLE!!!!!!

Today I bring you the first of my Easter Super Posts for 2010 and we are starting off with BATTLE OF THE BUNNIES!

In the Red Corner weighing in at 29.0g we have the 2009 Chocolate Bunny Champion .... Mars Malteser MaltEaster Bunny!!!!!

Maltesers MaltEaster - See HERE

In the Blue Corner - weighing 26.0g we have the Nestle Kit Kat Chunky Bunny

Kcal 138 Fat 7.6g Carbs 15.9g (per bar)

The first challenger to the MaltEaster crown we have Nestle's Bunny. This Kit Kat Chunky Bunny cost me 49p from Tesco and was priced at 6p cheaper than the original Chunky bar.

If you look at the cross-section above the only difference between this bar and the normal Chunky was the Bunny design printed on the top and the significantly thinner base of milk chocolate. Tastewise this was absolutely no different to what you get from a normal Kit Kat - the milk chocolate was sweet, whilst the wafer was slightly malty and wheaty in taste. To be honest the 26.0g didn't fufill me and I felt a little begrudged that I had parted with the amount of money I did for satisfaction I didn't get in return - hey at least it tasted damn nice.

7.6 out of 10

In the .... other colour corner .... weighing in at 40.0g ... we have the Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel Bunnies

Kcal 100 Fat 5.3g Fat(sats) 3.2g Carbs 11.7g (per bunny)

Now considering that Cadbury Caramel is one of my favourite chocolates ever these Cadbury Caramel Bunnies were really going to have to do something spectacularly wrong to get a ChocolateMission thumbs down.

These Cadbury Caramel Bunnies cost me 50p (Tesco again) which was cheaper than the MaltEaster but a whole 1p more expensive than the above Kit Kat Bunny product. Speaking of the taste it was exactly as I expected - absolutely delicious! I have written many a review before on different Cadbury Caramel products (HERE) speaking highly of the classical combination of the creamy milk chocolate and sweet nectar caramel so I will point you in the direction of those reviews for a full rundown. All you need to know here was that these Cadbury Caramel Bunnies incorporated all the goodness of the bar in some novelty shaped bunny pieces. The only disapointing attributes for me was that I didn't find the bunny shapes as practical to eat or quite as fulfilling as the normal block bar.

8.7 out of 10

Ladies and Gentlemen after several rounds of non-stop tasting we go to the scorecards ....

... and the winner ...

.... and NEWWWWWWW Chocolate Bunny Champion of the UK .....

........ Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel Bunnies!!!!!

Disagree? Why not drop a comment with which you feel is superior! I personally would choose the Cadbury Caramel Bunnies if given the choice between the three, but that said I really do rate the Maltesers MaltEaster as a close second. Please don't accuse me of Nestle bashing but I simply can't find a reason to buy the Kit Kat product given the fact that for another 6p you can get a full-on Chunky! This does beg the question why didn't they just stick the bunny pattern on top of the regular Chunky and save on having to design the new sized wrappers etc :S ho hum!! The Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel Bunny wins for me!

They're kinda expensive aren't they? :(
My favourite easter chocolate are Galaxy chocolate caramel eggs, yummy :D

I think the MaltEaster is the best but I also like the Cadbury DM rabbits. I loved the way you wrote the review lol.

Kim said...

What about the Lindt rabbit jim? You can't have forgotten that one.

Me personal choice is the Malteaster. I think the Kit Kat is a little boring and the caramel is nothing we haven't seen before. The malteaster wins because it is the newest idea.

David said...

I am confused that looks exaclty like a KK chunky but with a rabbit drawn on the top. Lucky I read this before I bought one.

It isn't even March and we are seeing Easter reviews. What is worse they have been selling all these since December. I swear every year they come out earlier and earlier.

P.s. @Kim Jim did a review of the rabbit before

The malteser rabbit is amazing. I could eat them all day.

I recently found a Milka bunny in my local newsagents. You might want to try that at some point in the future.

Hi Jim I love the way you reviewed these today. Do you think anyone will ever beat the champion you crowned? I am not a fan of caramel cadburys and would probably have the Kit Kat but I can see why people are moaning that it isn't exciting as it is essentially a repackged normal one. Keep the reviews coming.

Has anyone seen the milkybar cows that nestle are doing this year? They look uber cute and have pretty little bells hung round their neck. If anyone is wondering I saw them in Tesco last week sat in amongst all the easter eggs.

Dan said...

Hey your new 'You might also like this'links are cool. I just spent 20 minutes going round in circles reading some of your older reviews.

I should probably get on with some work now. I hope my manager hasn't been looking at my screen LMAO.

There could only ever be one winner in this battle :) Apart from tasting delicous, and getting two in a pack, the caramel bunny is a) a very nicely intricate bunny shape unlike the kitkat, and b)a well crafted bunny shape unlike the squashed rabbit effect the Maltesers one has!

The Malteser one has an interesting centre though, I actually think Mars culd develop this centre into a new all round Maltesers product, like a bar perhaps?!

I too like the new 'you might also like' bit :)

I liked the caramel bunnies, I thought they make a nice little snack without having to buy a larger DM Caramel bar.
But, I disagree that they should win because they aren't particularly 'unique'. The Malteaster bunny should win because it actually offers something different from Malteasers. The Kitkat one is just pointless IMO, even the bunny design looks rubbish (although the Malteaster one isn't too great either lol).

It is a little funny seeing you write about easter chocolates in February but like everyone is saying they have been out since before Christmas so I sort of expected them sooner.

This is a little random but can someone tell me why a rabbit symbolises easter? I don't get it?

Alex said...

Isn't the Easter bunny an American thing?

Ana said...

Well, MaltEaster would be my choice. The bunny is a little simplistic, but it still looks cute. And I don't find it too small.

Rachel said...

I think the Malteaser bunny wins on cuteness alone.
Looking forward to seeing more Easter reviews Jim, maybe because my birthday falls on Easter Sunday this year (woo!).

Emma said...

i totally agree with u jim, the caramel bunnies r the best, i do love the malteasters but i find they get really sickly afta a wile, whereas cud eat the caramel ones all day long :), do like the kitkat bunny but just the same as a normal kitkat but with more chocolate, wudnt say it so much like a chunky! lindt white choc bunny the bestest :)... mmmmm white chocolate!!

Hannah Somerville said...

Battle of the Bunnies... genius :D

I agree, caramel wins hands down! Although I must say my favourite Easter chocolate has to be mini eggs every time.

Woo bunnies!

Real rabbits freak me out actually. They have scary eyes.

I agree with you dear jim the caramel bunnies are wonderous. Yes it is just the caramel bar in a shape of whimsy, but why should that be bad? Cadbury know they do amazing caramel, let them milk it I say! And, let us not forget, you get two. Two I say!

And again, agree that the malteaster bunny is lovely. Like they added truffley-cream to maltesers, mashed it up and made it into a bunny! Woohoo!

Really enjoyed today's post jim. Yay Easter!

Claudia

They are quite dear when you put them in context with normal chocolate bars.

Steven

Thanks it was good changing up my style a bit.

Kim

Someone has left you the link! FYI 8.5 out of 10!

ChocThornton

Yep I would agree that for innovation the MaltEaster wins ... not often we say that about Mars Eh?

David

The Kit Kat was disappointingly exactly like the Chunky. Annoying huh!? Would have been good to see them do something different.

Rachel

These things are coming earlier every year aren't they. The easter reviews will be held off for a bit now .. I just wanted ot get this one up as the products have been out ages!

Anon

All day!? That is a bunny massacre

Golden

Hi chap - I have seen that and it looks like just a plain milk chocolate shaped bunny .. it seems a little pointless to review given I have reviewed Milka milk chocolate before don't you think!?

Paul

Thanks for being so nice about the review. I really don't know if the Cadbury Caramel bunnies will be beaten!? Never say never I guess :D

Lou

I have seen them! They eccentric looking I will give you that. Like the Milka bunny they are just essentially shaped chocolate I have reviewed before so I will put off reviewing until now if that is ok.

Dan

Thanks I added that last night. It should start getting more targetted in what it suggests once the site that runs it works its way through my archives a bit more.

Alan

It isn't normal to see mars actually try something a little different is it!? Like I said last year the MaltEaster bunny deserves to be made in to a bar that is available all year round. I think it would be a real hit.

p.s. ate that Morro bar today! Review coming soon.

Phil

The Kit Kat is a little pointless huh!? I wish they had tried to do something a little more with it.

Looking at the comments I don't think you are alone in your disagreement with the winner.

Hey ... that is what the comments thing is about after all though isn't it! It would be very boring if we agreed all the time.

Emma

I have no idea what the easter bunny means!? Can anyone help Emma out here?

Alex

See above!

Ana

A lot of people are fans of the MaltEaster here! I think this further backs up the fact that Mars should make the effort of making it a permanent part of their range. It is obviously very popular indeed!

Rachel

That is a good day to have your birthday :D As I said above for the next few weeks I wouldn't expect too many more easter reviews as there are a few others bits of bobs to get out the way before Easter is upon us! I will make sure I line up some of the new eggs that are due out this year though!

I have already compiled one more SUPER POST with some the newest mini egg products.

Hannah

Ahh I am not a fan of the Mini Eggs myself. This post did originally have a far more boring title but I coined battle of the bunnies at the back of last week ... I am glad at least one person thought it was clever :D

Lottie

I have to admit I don't really like rabbits either but when they are in solid chocolate form I can deal with them.

Looking back at my review + all of todays comments there seem to be two clear favourites! I think the Kit Kat attempt is a bit of an outcast with the other two being so good.

Louise

The Malteaster really does have its fans doesn't it!

Thanks everyone - more Easter reviews coming in a few weeks.

Easter already? I'm lying in wait for the post-Valentine's day sales. :)

Ana said...

Well, I understand that this originated from Germany and then it was brought to the US. The bunny was first mentioned in writing around 1620. It was a symbol of fertility, just like the eggs; the name Easter also comes from the name of a goddess of fertility which was celebrated in April and the bunny was her animal. This tradition was replaced by the Christian celebration, but the bunny remained.
