March 26th: Cadbury Dairy Milk with Crunchie Bits

Kcal 500 Fat 24.6g Fat(sats) 15.3g Carbs 64.0g (per 100.0g)

Well its taken me long enough to get around to this one hasn't it!? Despite trying bars from as far away as New Zealand and Japan this Cadbury Dairy Milk with Crunchie Bits has managed to escape my attention for over two years and has dodged the bullet many a time when it has come to receiving its all important ChocolateMission review. To be honest I really don't know why it hasn't been done before today - the Cadbury Crunchie is one of my favourite bars of all time and I remember as a kid I used to eat a very similar version of this bar all the time (who can name that bar?? Cadbury Blast was it!?). Anyway, this bar could elude me no more and I today got around to finally rating this bar on the ChocolateMission rating system.

In the UK this bar is only available in its 230.0g format ... no don't worry this isn't going to be one of those reviews where I start ranting about how we have been cheated out of 20.0g of chocolate :) What with all the different bars I have to review this was again another product I brought into my work office, though I managed to tuck into my fair share during its short lived life once it was opened. Do I have to comment on Cadbury packaging again!? Probably not but I will ... I personally love it. The matted appearance gave it a nice shiny, premium look whilst also maintaining the chocolate below in fine condition. Cadbury packaging is designed to be anything over elaborate but you have to love it for the strength of its branding which is reassuring of quality but over the top or in your face. The chocolate itself also looked pretty stunning with the blocks a sensible size to be consumed in one mouthful each. I needn't probably tell you how great the chocolate smelt as I opened the packaging - it was stunning with its usual chocolaty scents mixed with just the slightest bit of extra sweetness emanating from the golden honeycomb pieces that glistened in each block.

The Cadbury Crunchie was one of the first ever products I reviewed on this site and it is still one of my favourite products that I have every now and then on days when I am not reviewing anything else. Personally I think the one minor flaw with the original Crunchie is the thickness of the outer chocolate - I think it could be just a touch thicker. With this product the roles were obviously reversed with the chocolate far outweighing the inner honeycomb pieces (16.0%) and I have to say it was still every bit as good as the original bar. The Cadbury Dairy Milk was its usual wonderful self - thick and smooth in melt and with a level of creamy, cocoa flavours to die for ... utterly fantastic. What I liked so much about this chocolate was that the eating experience involved two stages. The first - letting the chocolate melt away on the tongue which led nicely on to stage two - the remainder honeycomb pieces. Crunching and chewing the honeycomb made for a nice change up in textures and brought lovely sweet, caramel like honey bursts to the taste that was in a word delicious. Like most Cadbury Dairy Milk products just a few blocks made for a wonderfully satisfying treat that I savoured from the very first piece to the very last.

Overall this is yet another Cadbury product that gets two thumbs up from me, though I am still undecided as to whether I would prefer it to a normal Crunchie. On reflection I guess the comparison is a little silly ... you would have the Cadbury Crunchie if you were 'on the go', whilst you would probably choose this bar in the instance of a sharing occasion or in home consumption. Is it as good as the Cadbury Dairy Milk Honeycomb Crisp from Ireland!? There is such little between them they are probably just as good as each other, though I would probably choose the Irish bar as the thicker melting chocolate made the flavours last just that little bit longer in the mouth and the honeycomb was just a little bit softer. Whatever lets stopping comparing this chocolate to other things as by its own merits its a great tasting bar that I immensely enjoyed - yet another tick in the box for Cadbury.

lol how random.

Why had you never reviewed this before? I thought it would have been one of the first stops on the mission.

You can't beat dairy milk for an everyday chocolate.

I used to like Galaxy more but I think they recently changed it to be sweeter. Dairy milk itself has loads of sugar in but I find it more creamy than others.

I have never seen the point of having this chocolate. Why wouldn't you just have a Crunchie bar if you felt like having dairy milk with crunchie?

I find it all a little puzzling.

Cadbury wholenut is better than this but I can't big bars of it anywhere. Help?

I swear the wrapper looked different last time I looked at it. Cadburys put all those meaningless fairtrade stickers on them now.

Nick said...

I agree with the guy above. Why would you ever buy this when you can get a normal crunchie?

I really love and feel of the look cadbury wrappers.

It is funny because I am not a great fan of the actual chocolate, but I just loved the material they use. In comparison I think the new Galaxy packaging looks cheaper than it did before they changed it.

I have to admit I've never had this bar even though i also like Crunchies lol I think because it is more a sharing bar it's not one I'd normally think of picking up for some reason lol the packaging is different now, this was the old style but it's still matt. I like the fact Cadbury make an effort to refrssh their bars and branding every so often - Nestle could do with doing so i think, all their wrappers have been about the same for years lol

I think Cadbury Crunchie Blasts are the Crunchie icecreams aren't they, on a stick? I do have a vague recollection of what you mean though, I think there was once bar with the same name. Believe it or not, when Crunchie was under the Fry's brand, they had the Crunchie as we know it but also Twin Crunchie (in two bits) and also Fry's Crunch which was basically this bar but Fry's choc lol I'm fascinated with chocolate and the wrappers, it's amazing what used to exist in the past :)

I'm not sure if my original commented posted or not it seems to go a bit funny when I click it grr. I hate the new Galaxy wrappers too Duncan, they just look cheap and murky and rather dreary to me! That horrid beige colour theyve made them all, why? they were much better deep chocolate browns!

I agree with the others - I never saw the point in this bar when you can get the regular Crunchie. I know that this is different, but it just never appealed to me. Crunchie was also one of my favourite bars as a kid. I used to love the crunchie nuggets too, not sure if they're still available? They were very moreish.

I also remember the crunchie blast. I just did a quick google and found the wrapper here:

Does anyone remember the Cadbury Blast bar that they used to make?

I think that has to go down as the most pointless chocolate that cadbury ever made. It was useless sitting next to the normal Crunchie.

Cadbury made some real errors when rationalising their range a few years ago.

Getting rid of the mint chips but keeping this Crunchie bar was a real mistake. People already had the option of the crunchie flavour but they took away all the option for chocolate mint fans. Not very wise if you ask me.

Yuck I don't like Crunchies. I wish they had kept the orange chips dairy milk and the biscuit dairy milk that they made years ago.

I don't like that many Cadburys chocolates but this is one of the exceptions for me.

There is just something about the crunchie honeycomb that is so nice. I think it is because I used to get given a crunchie every weekend by my nan. It brings back tons of nice memories for me.

Nothing beats a crunchie. An all time classic if ever there was one.

Jim I just clicked through to that Golden Crisp review you did for that bar from Ireland, it both looks and sounds superb.

Do you think that irish shop you got it from still does them?

I couldn't believe it when I tried dairy milk in ireland. It is so much creamier than ours.

I'm going to be a beacon of individuality and disagree with the "what's the point?" folks. I much prefer the higher chocolate:honeycomb ratio you get in this bar compared to a regular crunchie, which gets a bit harsh after a while.
And you can see why Cadbury would want it, all the more popular bars have super-size versions (eg caramel), and obviously the 'bits' format is the only feasable way crunchie can have a 200g+ bar counterpart.

And it uses proper dairy milk, which I always appreciate. C'mon people, you can't not be into it!

I liked your review today Jim, I could especially sense the vibes of crunchie love.

I agree with a lot of what Lottie has said.

I think there is a point to this bar as it is the only one where you can get dairy milk and crunchie in the same bar. You used to be able to get it in that Blast bar some people have already mentioned, but now that is long gone this is our only option.

Great review, thank you.

Rachel

I honestly have no idea. I would have thought I would have done it before today aswell.

In all fairness I did write this review a few months ago, it has just been put back and back.

Kim

A fair few people have been saying that about Galaxy recently. To be honest I haven't had Galaxy chocolates for ages so I can't pass comment.

David / Nick

Fair point ... but the Crunchie isn't actually made of Dairy Milk! It is Cadbury's secondary recipe.

Anon

I have never had a problem finding it myself!? Have you tried all your local supermarkets? Aren't they 230.0g bars now?

Paul

As I said the pictures and review was done a while back. It could have changed since then you are right.

Duncan

I do like the look of Cadbury packaging, it is something they have always done well. I don't think the new Galaxy wrappers are bad myself.

Alan

Wow I just thought the old Blast bar was just part of the 'Dairy Milk with ...' phase that Cadbury went through.

I will take a look out for those ice creams.

Have you got any pictures of those old Fry's bars? I had no idea Crunchie used to sit under Frys ... you have me intrigues :D

Sorry about the comments thing - perhaps they got chaught up in the spam filter? I am literally getting hundreds of spam comments a day now! I think it is just because the site is continuing to grow in size. Apologies though.

Phil

Good work finding a picture of the Cadbury Blast. I sorta remember it but sort of don't.

I haven't seen the nuggets around for ages you are right. They seem to be one of those things that sporadically appear through different times of the year.

Justin

Take a look above chap! Phil found a cool picture of it.

Daisy

I never thought that much of the mint or orange chips bar but I do agree that they did cut the selection down somewhat.

At least they have recently massively increased choice with the new Bar of Plenty range.

Steven

I always say this but Nostalgia is a great thing. I get those sort of feelings with Milkybar! I know it is crap but it just makes me feel good as it brings back nice memories.

Nick

By the looks of it the Irish Shop do still stock it. I think any fan of Dairy Milk would appreciate that bar. It is really fantastic.

Lottie

Thanks for the nice words about the review. You raise a good point about the original crunchie not being made of dairy milk ... I still don't understand why!?

I personally can't see why there isn't a place for this bar in the market. Like Alan says above it is possibly more suited to sharing, but I still think there is a place for it.

Darren

What about the caramel man!?? The caramel!

Thanks everyone - I hope you all have great weekends.

I find them very interesting! no worries about the comment thing, I think theyre getting through again now :)

Oh and believe it or not apparently the Picnic also came under Fry's! lol :)

Alan said...

Sorry, me again lol I came across this, I've never seen a very old Walnut Whip packet - interesting that it was dark choc!

I wonder if they tasted better 30 or 40 years ago?

Nice review,

I have to admit I have a soft spot for Crunchie but it's overall too much for me, too sweet, and after a couple of bites I've had enough. This sounds much better balance with nuggets of the cinder toffee in, shame it's in dairy milk (not a fan, yes I'm picky) still I think this may be worth a go at some point.

Mind just found a new love, Milka Daim bar nuggets in... ummmm Great balance, very stylish bar to boot.

Alan

Great finds chap! Got to say I am loving that poster you found on Flickr with alll the different old school bars.

I wonder how different some of those bars taste compared to how they do today. It would be an interesting comparison huh!?

Some of those I have never even heard of!

Punch?
Caramets?

Awesome work as always :D

Sean

I love the Milka with Daim aswell! Did you know you can also get that bar in a smaller 40.0g serving size now? I would really suggest it to anyone that hasn't had the pleasure of trying the big bar yet!

Thanks chaps
Jim
