March 9th: Hotel Chocolat Rose & Violet Cremes

Kcal ??? Fat ??? Fat(sats) ??? Carbs ???

Sons and daughters I hope you all haven't forgotten that it is Mothering Sunday this weekend! Indeed, it has come around early this year with the 14th of March being the date to mark in your diaries. To be honest up until a few weeks ago the day had slipped my mind completely (sorry Mum!), but thankfully a timely reminder and some samples later from the guys at Hotel Chocolat and I now look like son of the year as I gave my gifts a few weeks early :D score! One of the box of chocolates my Mum was treated to this year were these Hotel Chocolat Rose & Violet Cremes which came billed as 'fondant centres with natural essence of rose & violet in dark chocolate shells.'

I guess it is a bit cheeky that I have managed to review something I have gifted but given that there were twenty pieces (net weight 200.0g) there were plenty to go around. As you can see above the style of packaging was pretty similar to a lot of other Hotel Chocolat products I have reviewed in the past, and it was once again agreed all round that the glossy outer box and several layers of inner padding created a sense of sophistication and premiumness. As good as the outer packaging was the chocolates also managed to catch the eye, with the whiteness of the inner fondant really sparkling against the dark coloured chocolate.

Moving on to more important matters it would be no understatement saying that these Rose & Violet Cremes really divided opinion and this all started with the smell chocolates. Had this been a blindfold test I would have struggled to tell you these were chocolates at all as the flowery, sweet smells these emanated would have thrown me straight off course. On one hand I will admit that these aromas were indicative of the taste, though I personally didn't find them appealing in the slightest. For me the excellence of the outer chocolate was upset by the rose and violet fondants which completely dominated things as soon as they were encountered. Conversely (and luckily!!) my Mother loved how they smelt and tasted, and said that both filled her with warm nostalgic feelings of sweets that she used to have as a child. Out of the two I thought the flowery taste of the rose fondant was superior to the perfume like taste of the violet centres, but my Mum said both were as good as each other. After revealing that they weren't to my taste I was quickly banished from wasting anymore ... she liked them so much I had to sneak some from the box for the photos :D

Overall it was hard scoring these today because if was up to me I would probably have given them a 3 for both taste and smell, yet my Mum said I should give them a 10 ... 7 it is then!! I think it is very much a case of either understanding or expecting the taste, or simply just not (like me!!) Looking at the back of the box this probably shouldn't come as any surprise given that Hotel Chocolat proclaim that these are a 'British recipe that dates back to the early 1900s'. On reflection I guess they are pitched at a very targeted audience that isn't anywhere near myself. If my parents are anything to go by Hotel Chocolat did a very good job as they absolutely loved them, and said they would to have them again in the future. What I am being very careful trying to say here is that these Hotel Chocolat Rose & Violet Creme are probably more for a 'mature' consumer than they are for a young guy like myself, and if it is on that basis that these get scored on it looks like they are a very good product. If you are struggling to think of a gift for Mothers Day this year then I think these are good option for you to consider ... just don't be gifting them to me anytime soon thanks :D

Rose and violet just shouldn't go near chocolate... :P

If it is a toss up between buying these for my mum or the caramels yesterday I think I know which ones win lol.

Yuck I hate sweets like this. I think fondants used to be really popular in the old'un days because they were cheap to make.

I think these are going to be older people only.

Oh dear these bring back horrible memories of when I used to go round my nans and she fed us these horrible frys sweets. I am not surprised you didn't like them Jim.

I think I will just stick with the champagne truffles and flowers for mumsy this year.

I know for a fact that she likes the pink ones (so do I yummy) and I think buying these instead would be a bit more risky by the sounds of it. Good review anyway.

God I hate those palma violet sweets. The thought of them just makes me shudder. They taste like cheap perfume.

Am I lookin on the positive side of things too much or do they at least look cool?

They don't appeal to me so much but I am pretty sure my mum would like them.

You are all wrong I love sweets like this.

I stil rue the day that they took away the Fry's 5 centres that Francesca seems to be talking about. That was such a timeless classic.

Sorry to go off on a tangent Jim but what easter eggs are you going to be reviewing from Hotel Chocolat?
Sorry to ask out the blue but I just want to be sure I read what you have to say about them before I put my order in.

These look very pretty, and I like fondant centres too, (there are after all plenty of perfectly good fondant centres about and I quite like Fry's) but I absolutely DETEST rose and violet creams. Urgh! I can't stand the perfumed taste and neither can my mother lol. Wierdly I have nothing against parma Violet sweets, but these creams are foul.

Don't worry Richard I like the sound of them as well you're not alone.

I'm not sure I will buy them for mother day, but at some point in the not too distant future I shall buy them to give them a try.

Lol this is the first ever I have looked at one of your Hotel Chocolat reviews and felt like I didn't have a sudden urge to start eating the screen. I bet my gran would go weak at the knees to try them but they don't look like my kind of thing sorry.

Hi Jim, I just entered your easter draw. How can anyone eat that much chocolate it must be incredibly large. I think it is safe to say that it is meant to be for sharing lol. They should make it one of those eating challenges like they have with steaks in America lol. The results would be messy.

Well it looks like a am in the minority when I say that I fancy these.

I like weird stuff like flavoured teas etc so I guess if you are into that sort of thing you might be a littlmore up for them.

First crap offering from Hotel chocolate for a while here Jim.

Rodzilla said...

I agree with Claudia, I hate those flavors (if you can call them that) near any type of food. So if you didn't take your mothers rating into consideration...these actually would have came in at around a 4-5?

These looks 100%, totally, undeniably ..........NOT MY THING AT ALL lol.

Claudia

Seemingly you aren't alone in thinking that.

David

It all depends on personal taste but yeh I now which mine would prefer aswell.

Rachel

You may be right I can't seeing many younger kids going for these.

Francesca

Are you sure they were Fry's? I don't think they have ever done a rose or lavender fondant chocolate? Not that I have ever seen anyway.

Daisy

Thanks for the nice words. I think I gave my mum the champagne truffles last year. From what I can remember they were very decent. There is a review here if you are interested ... http://tinyurl.com/ycvvz2a

Anon

They were never a favourite of mine either.

Nick

If you end up giving them to her let us know what she thought of them.

Richard

I don't remember Fry's 5 centres myself. I thought it was flavoured with fruit fondants and not rose/lavender ... I may be mistaken though? Does someone better informed wish to help me out here?

Kim

Sorry but I don't want to spoil the surprise too much ... I will be doing a few of the scrambled eggs and a few of the easter selection boxes ... that is all I will tell you though :D ...remember to input the code when you put your order to get your discount.

Alan

There are some good ones out there aren't there. Especially when you think about some of the mint fondant centres that you can get nowadays.

What violet/rose cremes have you tried before? I can't think of any others of the top of my head?

Paul

Be sure to let us know what you think if you do order them.

Lauren

There are always going to be some things that don't your fancy I guess. Maybe you should treat your grandma if she likes them that much :D

Golden

Shhh or you will give the answer away. I do know what you mean though, I seriously don't think someone could eat that amount in one sitting. I wouldn't like to see anyone try anyway!

Steven

You are in the minority but I think the demographic of the people who visit this site are generally younger. There are quite a few of you saying that your mums/grandparents would fancy them.

Anon #2

Indeed .. like I said to some of the others it isn't realistic to think that everything will be a winner.

Rod

If I factored out my mums thoughts I would have gone for probably a 3 or a 4. It was a few weeks ago I tried these so I can't remember exactly but I would go nearer the lower end of the scale for sure. I just didn't take to them at all.

Ganesh

Probably best you don't try these then. Your instincts are probably correct in this instance.

Thanks everyone - There is a lot more Hotel Chocolate reviews to come in the next few weeks.

Fry's Five Centres were fruit centres (like the Oz Cadbury Snack) not Rose and Violet. I guess the closest Fry's got to Rose flavour is the Turkish Delight! I wonder if Francesca was meaning the fondant part she didn't like (hence the Fry's fondant connection)aswell as the R & v flavours (not necessarily Fry's since i don't think they have ever done one)?

I've had the unfortunate pleasure of trying the odd Rose and Violet cream over the years. I know Chocolinnis do them and they ended up in a selection we once bought. Beech's also do them although I don't remember trying those. I can't remember the exact brands but there are a few well known/prestigious brands, but I know I don't like them atall lol

It's nice to see a such an innovative company doing some proper old-fashioned Britishness. We crazy youths are not going to be into it but I imagine there being a zillion mamas&papas gushing and getting all nostalgic over these.

Violet as a flavour seems to be coming back on the scene I believe. At work we concoted this amazing beverage with a violet flavour liquer, sambuca, lime+soda which everyone is now obsessed by. Maybe its just my pub.

Thea said...

haha I knew I was right not to recommend Browne's rose and violet creams for a review -- though I could tell they would be delicious to someone who likes these. they were strangely fascinating tasting exactly
just like flowers...I actually shared and got my mom to finish them lol!

Alan

Beeces were the manufacture that sprung to mind when this was mentioned yesterday.

I still need to contact Chocolinis ... infact I will do it now!

Lottie

Indeed I think you are right about the older gens falling head over heels with these, my mum certainly did anyway.

Violet flavour liqueuer? Was that a dusty old bottle from the back of one of th cabinets or was it a new one :D Have you named this cocktail yet?

Thea

It sounds like you were probably wise not doing so yes :D

Indeed I think someone that likes rose and violet sweets would really enjoy them ... that doesn't include me though.

Thanks
JIM
