April 21st: Ritter Sport Milchcreme Mandel

Kcal 578 Fat 40.0 Carbs 47.0g (per 100.0g)

Coming straight off the back of my reviews of Ritter Sport's 2010 Spring range, I today have the pleasure of bringing you all my thoughts about their new 'variety of the year'. I understand that some of you may be starting to think that Ritter are making flavours for almost every day of the year, but if you think back to last years 'variety of the year', you may remember that the Ritter Sport Karamell Nuss proved to be a really fantastic limited edition that won several prizes in my 2009 awards. With that top of mind it wasn't like this Ritter Sport Milchcreme Mandel had a lot to live up to then did it ... no pressure :) ... at least the prospect of 'milk chocolate with a milk cream and almond nut filling' sounded like it had a chance of matching up.

Just like last years special edition this bar came in the usual 100.0g, sixteen chunk format that I devoured (with some help!!) over the course of two separate sittings. Looking at the wrapper it is was exactly what you would expect from Ritter Sport. It was clean cut in design, and simply presented with the inner milk cream and almond nut flavour well communicated through both branding and pictures. The chocolate itself was also pretty pleasing on the eye, with the light coloured cream centre visibly studded with small golden pieces of almond nut. Taking in the aromas on offer I detected the usual sweet chocolatey scents - as nice as these were I was a little disappointed that the nuts didn't have a presence at this point.

I always say that the smell of a chocolate is often indicative of the taste, and this particular bar would further strengthen my hypothesis. If you want to read about what I think about Ritter Sport milk chocolate in great detail I suggest you take a look at any of the 25+ Ritter Sport chocolates that I have reviewed which have included the stuff (to be more precise look - HERE). Long story cut short it was it's usual sweet, milky self - it wasn't really distinctive in any manner, but it did the job nicely of delivering a fair standard chocolate flavour hit with every chunk. Sandwiched in the centre of the outer milk chocolate the milk cream and almond centre did little but further compounded the creamy nature of the chocolate. At times the almond nuts did cut through adding a further buttery, nutty hints to the cream flavours, however these instances were few and far between and I would much rather the nuts of had a grander say in the taste. The work colleague I shared this bar with was not half as disappointed at the mildness of the almonds, but they did admit that they would have liked the nut pieces to have been larger in size.

Overall compared to other Ritter Sport flavours I would have to say this Milchcreme Mandel would be verging more towards being a 'miss' rather than a 'hit', but put in the perspective of the whole chocolate market it has to be considered a sound offering from our German friends. Fundamentally there was nothing wrong with this bar whatsoever - the chocolate was of a fair standard, the milk cream was ok and the nuts didn't detract from the experience in any manner. Unfortunately when I compare it to other bars in the Ritter range I wouldn't say it delivered the same impact with it's flavours that others have done in the past. I guess what I am trying to get at here is that if you want a pretty 'safe' tasting chocolate, that isn't overly elaborate in flavour then this would be a fairly decent option. However, if on the other hand you want a more exciting, hard hitting taste I think you are best off looking at other Ritter Sport alternatives.

How long until flavour of the day is out then? lol I am all for new things but the amount of new ritter chocolates is crazy.

I think Ritter should mix up their use of milk, dark and white chocolates more.

Someone was saying this the other day but they don't use their white chocolate enough. I bet this almond chocolate would have been really nice had it been in anything but milk chocolate.

As it stand it just comes off as a little boring.

I don't like the packaging. It doesn't make it look very special for 'variety of the year' - it should be all sparkly and stuff lol.

Jim the photograph of the chocolate looks like another 20 different Ritter Sport flavours you have reviewed in the past. To name a few you could say it looks identical to the Yoghurt, Cappuccino ones etc. I can sort of see some of the nut pieces, but it still looks the same to a lot of others which I think is a pretty unexciting.

I have really got in to almonds recently so I would be really keen for this. It would be nice to see Ritter try some recipes with some different nuts aside to the normal hazelnuts and almonds. A ritter chocolate with wholenut macadamias would be most welcome.

I used to think that you worked for Hotel Chocolat but now I think you must work for these Ritter guys. I don't think I have ever seen a chocolate site feature one brands as much as you have them.

hmmmmmmmm that is what I thought when I saw the flavour in your title. I don't think your review has convinced me that this is a ritter bar that I really need to try. There are easily another ten that I would want to buy in from germany before I would choose this one.

This looks a bit boring to me. If you don't like nuts ritter aren't exactly a brand that offers much.

This does look a bit boring, as does the packaging lol I normally quite like the Ritter wrappers but this one does look really dull. I think Richard is right when he says the bar itself looks identical to many other Ritter bars - I think they could mix it quite abit, make it more exciting.

Nice review Jim. I can resonate with rachel a bit here, in that this isn't one of the ritter flavours that gets me as excited as other do.

Taking a look through the previous reports the one that stick out in my mind are the olympia and caramel+nuts chocolate. I would bite the hand off the person that offered me one of them.

It looks like flavour of the year isn't up too much. I am more looking forward to trying some of the yoghurt chocolates you say they are releasing in the summer. They seem to offer something completely different to the norm.

I prefer plenty of other nuts to almonds so I'm not sure about this flavour.

Dare I be the first oen to repeat what we are all thinking? e.g. why don't we get more ritter flavours in England. It is boring yadda yadda yadda.

Marine said...

This isn't a flavour that takes my fancy I am afraid. I am more than happy sticking with my peppermint flavour for the time being. I don't think it can be beaten.

I think there is such a thing as overkill when it comes to new flavours. If I lived in Germany I would find it really hard to keep up with them.

I just ordered three flavours of Ritter that I haven't tried before. I went for the marzipan, milk hazelnuts and cappuccino ones.

I will let you know how I rate them.

My friend brough me back a pack of mini ritter sport squares from germany last week. I am currently making my way through all the flavours. My favourite so far is the cornflakes one. I am just about to nibble my way through the praline flavours Yummmy.

I am going to Germany later this month. I have a very big list of chocolates to buy now lol. I have just spent the best part of an hour looking through all your reviews from Germany. You have reviewed so many it is really impressive for someone that doesn't live in the country.

I always find almonds and chocolate quite a boring combination, usually because almonds have such a dry texture. They need fruit with them for contrast.

Duncan said...

Looks like you thought this one was a bit average huh Jim!? We should probably look at it more in the light of it being an average ritter bar and not an average chocolate. lol there is probably still a big difference between the two.

Can't say I am a fan of almonds so no sale here I am afraid.

Haha flavour of the day! I did say they have almost got a flavour for every single day of the year!

Daisy

I still agree with you about this. They should try use some of their other chocolates a bit more. It would be nice to see what a white chocolate and almond milk creme bar would have been like.

Emma

I don't think my photo does it any favours but yes I think they could have made it look a little more special.

Richard

Again I don't think my photo does it many favours. The nut pieces were more visible than they look in this picture. My fault I am afraid.

Chris

Ritter actually do a macadamia chocolate ... I haven't actually reviewed it either which is pretty surprising. It is part of their bio range (that is their organic chocolate range!).

Mark

Na both of those manufacturers are just very good at sending me samples. Very kind people indeed.

Rachel

I can't say I blame you I would feel exactly the same way. You are heading to Germany then? Which ones would you prioritise trying first then?

Anon

A few people have said that over the last few weeks. I guess if you don't like nuts the options that Ritter offers is pretty limited.

Alan

As I said to some of the other chap I am not sure my photo did the wrapper any flavours. Out of the range though it is probably one of the more bland looking. It would be nice to see more dark chocolates from them.

Justin

Some of the other flavours do some a bit more unique don't they. I can't recommend the caramel and nuts flavour enough! It is one of my favourites certainly.

Lauren

Haha don't worry I think there are loads of people that feel the same way as you. Hopefully if enough people say it they might take notice.

Marine

The peppermint flavour is great isn't it. I haven't had it for a very long time but I might reunite myself with it soon.

Golden

It would be hard keeping up to date with all the flavours but I still think I would love our UK market to be more like this. It must be pretty exciting getting new flavours each season.

Selina

They are some of my favourite flavours. The whole hazelnut bars are brilliant. Please do ensure you let me know what you think of them.

Diane

My parents always buy those packs of mini ones when they are abroad. There are massive bundles trying to get the yogurt and the cornflakes ones :D I normally just settle for the praline.

Resph

Thanks - it is mainly down to a combination of Dean-German-Grocery and ChocolateMission readers that I have got to try so many of the different flavours. Recently even RItter Sport themselves have been sending my samples! I hope it continues.

Phil

Almonds do hugely benefit from having fruit alongside them don't they! I think that dried orange pieces normally go really well them (like in that Lindt Excellence Orange bar!!). They aren't the most flavoursome nuts but I like them nonetheless.

Duncan

Good point. It is probably right saying that this bar is better than the average chocolate bar, but in the light of Ritters own range it is probably one of the weaker flavours in my opinion.

Henry

Hey not everyone can be satisfied I guess. There are plenty other flavours to get stuck in to I guess.

Thanks everyone - More Ritter next week! It is like a never ending procession isn't it :D

lol yes I can tell you these reviews are definitely biased, there's no doubt about it, but if it's towards any manufacturer it must be Cadbury's ...for I just counted and I've bought by far the most from them after reading a hypnotic CM review, compared to every other brand...it's not possibly down to their intrinsic quality or availability or anything...biased, definitely ;)

Jim said...

Thea

Oh please don't even joke about my reviews being biased :D If I get one more muppet saying I am on an anti Nestle campaign I might just scream.

Perhaps I do have some biased towards Cadbury but that just comes up growing up with it I guess. I don't claim to be the best reviewer in the world :( I do try though.

Thanks
JIM

Haha I was totally joking, sorry ;) I do have a soft spot for Cadbury though...until Kinder Joy started production last year, it was the only decent locally made chocolate available. And that was even with the added nickel to stop the melt.
