April 9th: Ritter Sport Haselnuss Krokant

Kcal 563 Fat 37.0g Carbs 52.0g (per 100.0g)

Last week I brought to you the first of three new Ritter limited editions, the Ritter Sport Bourbon Vanille (See HERE). Well guess what!? Today I bring you numero dos from this new spring collection - the Haselnuss Krokant variety. On the back of the wrapper this offering was described as 'milk chocolate with a hazelnut creme, hazelnut & almond brittle and rice cereal'. As I have stated in many of my previous reviews Ritter Sport are renowned for the prestige of their fillings, and it isn't very often that they let us consumers down - this bar had real potential.

Prepared in the same style packaging as the Bourbon Vanille flavour, this Haselnuss Krokant variant similarly struck a fresh and appealing look. The pastel colours again struck me as bright and welcoming, whilst the pictures of the hazelnut and almonds communicated the flavour of theme of the bar and in an non-overly elaborate manner. Unzipping the 100.0g bar from it's resealable packaging, the 4x4 quadrants broke up with relative ease, and the beige coloured centre filling looked very appealing and plentiful in it's implementation. Inspecting the chocolate more closely the nutty smells that emanated from the chocolate weren't the strongest but they did a sound job in maintaining my interest.

What more is there to say about Ritter Sport milk chocolate that I haven't said in the previous 40+ Ritter Sport reviews I have written before!? To be honest there isn't, it just did the same average job of carrying the inner filling with little fuss and delivered the usual chocolate flavour hit that I have come to used to. Moving on to more important matters, I have the bad news of telling you that the inner nut filling wasn't quite up to scratch. Starting off with the positives the smoothness of the creme contrasted nicely with the crunchy nut and cereal elements which did at least bring a degree of interest in the textures. Unfortunately though the taste just wasn't up to scratch with Ritter's previous showings. I found that the creme and nut brittle constituents didn't deliver the desired nut flavours, whilst the rice cereal was unsurprisingly very mild and didn't contribute anything in terms of flavours. What really surprised me was that neither the hazelnut or almond came to the fore of the taste. The nut brittle pieces offered little apart from minor bursts of brown sugar, with the nutty influences were very much in the background of the taste. The totality of this all was that the flavour longevity was pretty limited, thus I didn't find that chocolate all that satisfying.

Overall my conclusions about this bar are very similar to my thoughts around the Ritter Sport Bourbon Vanille in that whilst it was hardly a bad tasting chocolate, but it was disappointing nonetheless. Disappointing is exactly the word that describes this bar best - when you think about what the bar promised (hazelnut creme, hazelnut & almond brittle) I bet you were thinking that this was going to be yet another review with me raving about how well Ritter Sport produce nutty chocolates. This assumption couldn't have been further off the mark as the nuts played such a minor part in the overall taste. To be honest I think someone with a nut allergy would barely get a rash eating this chocolate (joke!!) - it was that underpowered. Nipping all my criticism in the bud this still wasn't a disaster of a chocolate - yes it was poor in the light of the implementation of the nuts, but the chocolate and variable textures from the creme, cereal, brittle still offered some interest. Long story cut short - not a Ritter bar I would recommend but you could do worse.

I thought Ritter Sport would do better than this.

You haven't thought much of these Spring bars from what we have seen from the first two.

The wrapper looks gorgeous with the daffodils it strikes me as looking really fresh.

I don't really like nuts that much anyway so I don't think I ever would have bought this. I am still pretty curious to try the vanilla flavour you did last week, but your review put me off a little.

Ritter Sport are announcing their summer flavours next week. Are you going to be reviewing them?

Can you tell us what they are yet?

Is it me or are you getting fussier in your old age? You increasingly complain that everything is 'sweet'
It is chocolate you know.

'The nut brittle pieces offered little apart from minor bursts of brown sugar, with the nutty influences were very much in the background of the taste'

This is enough to tell me that they didn't hit this flavour on the head. I read the title with great excitement as I love nutty chocolates. It is a shame to see they didn't pull it off.

What is the best Ritter sport bar ever jim? I think it is the peppermint or the praline.

Sorry I don't know if this is the best place to put this but Milka also have some seasonal flavours out at the minute.

They have a few new Amavel flavours, new cookies, a toffee milk bar, a orange yoghurt bar and a raspberry cream bar. Please review some if you can.

While this would not be a first choice with me as the flavours wouldn't be amongst my faves, it is a shame this didn't quite work as it sounded like it had a lot of potential- a bit like a Ferrero Rocher by Ritter lol thats more how I was expecting this to taste when I read the descripton!

A Nestle bar outdoing a Ritter Sport chocolate. Now there is somehting I never though I would see on this site.

Real shame about this one.

Jim, where do you find it best to get riiter bars from? any supermarket you suggest? im really after the marzipan lol and seeing ive just ordered a tone of USA chocolate bars feel bad about getting more off the web lol.

Oh BTW keep checking the hotel chocolate Sale :D. I got a Rocky Road to Caramel Extra Thick egg for only £11 yesterday seems they add things and take things away all the time.

Selina said...

@William you forgot to mention the marzipan flavour ;)

I'm still a curious creature :) But if I had to choose which to try, I'd choose the vanilla one.

@Nick: Yes, yes, yes :D New Milka products are out and I've seen them in stores already. I hope I can find the time to get myself 5 of them today!

When I saw the description I just assumed this would score highly, how could it fail with hazelnut creme AND brittle?! Just shows that everything is not as it seems. I hope Ritter aren't going down the route of other companies and cheapening their recipes to keep prices low. Not that it matters to me as I rarely get to eat a Ritter bar, but it's the principle that counts.

Ritter Sport need to make a peanut butter brittle bar. I bet that would be amazing.

Can someone please help me in my quest to find a good place to buy these bars from? The only ones I can find at the moment are the marzipan and peppermint ones.

New Milka? Why oh why oh why don't I live in Germany :( They're so damn lucky. Ritter, Milka, Lindt...easily some of the better quality chocolates around and they get the most varieties. Speaking of Milka I just had a Milka D'aim with my cuppa, very very tasty.

Selina said...

Some of those Milka flavours sound amazing. If you look on their website they are also making some new rolo type things with nuts in. Please can you review some of these things Jim?

It would be ideal to know what is worth buying and what isn't.

Paul said...

Jim I am about to send an e-mail to my cousin in germany. Please can you suggest some Ritter flavours I can ask him to send across please.

I think this one was the best of the three special edition bars, and I actually really liked it. I would have rated it higher than that. Although I can see where you're coming from, I think Ritter Sport is known to offer good chocolate bars and it might be hard for any new releases to live up to expectations.

If people are curious about the new Milka stuff... I just got myself those 5 new things and had to try a bit of each one.
1. Milka ChocoCookie - 168g, 12 oatmeal cookies with Milka milk chocolate chips, nice chocolate smell on opening the package which you can re-seal (picture) - I find that pretty cool. I'm not crazy about oatmeal cookies so I found the chocolate chips to be a really nice addition.
2. Milka Choco Minis - what I've bought is not the format on the website, it's slightly smaller. Mine is a 150g cardboard package containing 4 small plastic packages with 6 biscuits each. The biscuits are butter biscuits and, when broken in two, they don't really look like the pictures on the package would suggest. They look better, imho. The pictures on the package would suggest that the milk cream layer is thicker than the Milka milk chocolate layer, but, in reality, the milk chocolate layer is the thick one (picture). I didn't really like the biscuit itself, I certainly wouldn't have it without the chocolate.
3. Milka Milch-Toffee Genuss (Milka Milk-Toffee Pleasure) - milk chocolate with cream filling with a liquid toffee heart with a coffee note. Now I'm not crazy about milk cream or coffee, but I liked this combination. Looks great as well (picture)
4. Milka Kakao Genuss (Milka Cocoa Pleasure) - Milka milk chocolate with a raspberry cocoa cream. There was something about that raspberry I didn't like :|
5. Milka Zartherb (Milka Extra Cocoa) - Milka milk chocolate with extra cocoa (45% min) - this was something I really like with its extra cocoa taste. I generally like it when the cocoa taste is stronger in chocolate. I would really like it if they made this their regular milk chocolate. It's not the same format as the previous two bars -those came in the 5x3 blocks format, while this was 6x4 blocks. It was also noticeably darker than the other two (picture).

You aren't having much lucky with these spring flavours are you?

These looks a bit better than the vanilla does but I can't see myself ever picking it up over the whole hazelnuts bar.

lottie said...

oh the mind games! It sounded so promising. Also, am I the only one who is finding the yellowy-beige colour of the filling mildly troubling? Just, looks a bit...poo-ish. There I said it.

I'm repeating myself like a geriatric but I do so wish we got more ritter/milka in the UK. The yoghurt, in particular, I get emotional about. It is epic!

Golden_Touch said...

I agree the filling looks a little creepy to me. For some reason I always get really excited when I hear that Ritter are bringing new flavours out. Hevaen knows why it isn't like I ever get to try any of them :(

Ritter Sport need to do a peanut butter flavour. I bet that would be all sorts of amaze.

PART 1

Alex

You will have to see if the third one is better wont you :D

Rachel

I never like to think I put people off trying things as I think you guys shuld always try things for yourself. If you want my advice though the vanilla flavour isn't the best Ritter has to offer.

Francesca

Sorry no word from Ritter yet. Hopefully they will send me some samples along.

Anon

Old age :D how very rude of you :D I can't help it if my tastebuds are changing chap. I write what I think sorry!

Kim

Na given how superb some of thier other nut chocs are this one wasn't the best. You are best off looking at the whole nut options they have.

William

Boy that is a question. Off the top of my head I think my all time favourite is the Karamell-Nuss. I may have just forgotten another flavour though. It is very much depedent on my mood.

Nick

Hi chap. I am desperately trying to track down some of those bars but I am having no luck at all :( I really want to try all these new Milka flavours and do you guys some reviews but I am having really difficulty with getting supplies from Europe at the moment. When/If I get the chance I would love to review them for you.

Alan

Ritter Sport Ferreo Rocher ... now there is something has potential :D Not everything is going to be up your street I guess. I hoped for more when I read the description aswell :( Oh well.

Matthew

I used to have amazing suppliers in Germany but they unfortunately shut down. If you are after the marzipan bar here in the UK your best bet is Tesco or Waitrose! I know that they definitely stock those bars.

Thanks for the heads up on the Hotel Chocolat site. I got a heads up from my contact there about what things I will be being sent from the summer collection! They look great!

Chris

What is your obsession with thinking that I hate Nestle ... it isn't true at all.

Selina

The marzipan flavour is great isn't it.

Ana

Thanks for showing us all those Milka things you bought. You are very lucky being able to get free will. I wish we were all as lucky here in the UK :( Ritter and Milka need to up their distribution in our country.

Phil

It did sound a dream combination didn't it! Don't worry I don't think that Ritter are going down that route at all ... you will see next week ;)

It is a shame that you and all my other UK readers get such little opportunity to try these flavours without having to go to all the hassle of importing them. Ritter is such an awesome range. One of my favourites for sure.

Richard

Oh yes indeed! Peanut Butter brittle would be amazing. I am looking for a good distributor of Ritter. I will give you guys all an update next week if I find one! If you find one yourselves please let me know.

Phil #2

Was the Daim bar one of the new impulse ones? Check out my 7days of chocolate reviews tomorrow! I have updated my original Milka Daim review with some pictures of our new UK bar.

Selina

They look cool don't they. If I can get old of them I will gladly review them.

Paul

Your best bet is too look through the archive mate under the Ritter tab. I have done nearly 40 reviews of theirs so I would be bound to forget something off the top of my head.

Susanne

I think you are right! The main flavours in their range are already there for a reason aren't they. It must be really hard to come up with new flavours all the time. You are very lucky also being able to get hold of these flavours.

Steven

There is still one left to try .... who knows it could be better than these two ;)

PART 2

Lottie

Nah you have to keep saying these things as it will be the only way that these companies take notice! Consumer power and all that!!!

Haha I see what you mean about the filling. It could just be my dodgy photography mind you! It looks ok in real life.

Golden

Damn it is such a shame for you guys. I will have to find you all a good source to order off.

Hannah

I agree that it would probably be amazing. Who knows one day it might actually happen!

Thanks everyone - I really wish we could all get hold of these Ritter / Milka bars easily. I will do some investigating. If anyone knows of a good source please feel free to e-mail me.

Have good weekends.
JIM

Ana, thanks for the mini-reviews! Very interesting, great pics too.

I know you didn't give them rave reviews, but I picked up this one and the Vanille Bourbon plus the Cashew Alpenmilch. Mostly because it's so hard to find the special editions here in the states and I still think they'll be interesting compared to the other American fare.

Jim said...

Cybele

Hi Cybele! I look forward to reading your own reviews on these Spring editions! I have actually been in correspondence with some of the Ritter Sport brand team in the US ... I will send them along your e-mail if you wish. I am sure they would appreciate your frank and honest reviews on their seasonal editions! Just a thought!?

Thanks
JIM
