Kcal 500 Fat 31.0g Fat(sats) 19.0g Carbs 49.0g (per 100.0g)Having tried a ridiculous amount of chocolates over the past two years I sometimes lose track of what I have/haven't reviewed. This is exactly the reason why it has taken me within the region of two plus years to get around to trying this Lindt Excellence Coffee Intense - I simply thought I had reviewed it before. Well after a request from ChocolateMission reader Mark I realised this wasn't actually the case so I went about seeking one out in my local Tesco supermarket. Long time ChocolateMission readers will be all to aware that I am a big fan of coffee flavoured chocolate, thus the prospect of 'fine dark chocolate with an aromatic taste of Arabica coffee' sounded right up my street.
Forming part of the standard Lindt Excellence range this bar came in a 100.0g format that was split into twelve medium sized blocks. The packaging varied very little at all from the other Excellence variants incorporating the familiar gold font and clean design work that radiated the usual Lindt quality. The chocolate inside looked immaculately formed and separated with a terrific cracking sound when separated into smaller pieces. As much as it was enjoyable to look at the intensely dark coloured chocolate I couldn't help but also be consumed with the strong aromas I detected, with rich scents of cocoa and roasted coffee beans on offer.
Being the Lindt Excellence geek I am I tried guessing the strength of the chocolate by tasting it before looking at the back of the packaging. I tell no lie - I was only 3% out (sad eh!?) with my guess of 50% cocoa being marginally above that of the proclaimed 47% on the outer cardboard box. In terms of strength this was not the most intensely flavoured dark chocolate I have ever had but it was still full of flavour and wonderfully progressive - especially when it came to the introduction of the coffee element to the party (most over used phrase ever!?) later on in the taste. Eating each block in halves this chocolate was best consumed when placed on the tongue and left to melt as it allowed the initial milk softened cocoa flavours to fully develop and express themselves before the aftertaste kick of the coffee came in. Indeed, in the latter stages of the melt the roasted bean flavours of the coffee kicked in nicely and became increasingly stronger as the chocolate smoothly melted away leaving the small coffee granules on the tongue. As you may have guessed from the scoring chart below this was a rich tasting chocolate and as enjoyable as it was I felt no need to eat more than 2 blocks per sitting.
Overall this is another fine example of great quality from the Lindt Excellence range and was one of the tastiest chocolates I have had since the my reviews of the Hotel Chocolat offerings last month. A common problem with the majority of coffee flavoured chocolates is that often the coffee element is understated in the taste, however this was not the issue here where the 'Coffee Intense' name was really a reality. If I was being picky I would have perhaps liked to have seen Lindt use one of their stronger dark chocolate recipes - perhaps their 70% or 85% recipes would have made this chocolate even better? Maybe not? One thing I can conclude for certain though is that if you like your dark chocolate and coffee chocolates this is definitely an option I would recommend you try. One thing I really appreciate is consistency with quality and I believe this is one thing the Lindt Excellence range always delivers on. This Coffee Intense is just yet another fine example of what they can offer.

ewww no I can't be handling coffee flavoured chocolate I am afraid. I hate coffee its pure filth.
Dx
Jim have you seen they have brought out loads of new milk chocolate excellence bars? I would suggest you try them, they are very nice (and cheap lol). Thank you for your review I will make sure I give it a try.
Does anyone else remember when there used to be like only four Lindt bars? In the supermarkets now (talking Tesco here) they pretty much stock their entire range now.
I'm not complaining I'm just pointing out they must have been quite successful to grow in size like that.
This sounds delicious I must give it a try. Coffee and dark chocolate are a dream combination for me.
Am I right in saying this is your favourite ever coffee chocolate then? It has never been one of my favourite flavour combinations but I am game to give anything a try at least once. At least you can feel assured you are going to get quality with Lindt.

I think you need to get out more Jim :) lol only joking. I personally find anything over 40% is getting a little strong for me.

@Nick - You will want to try the new crunchy caramel chocolate. It is tremendous trust me. I would pick it out as the best Lindt bar I have ever had tbh.
If you guys think the range we get here in the UK is large you should sense check it with what they have in the likes of Germany and France.
I think you would all be amazed by how many different types they have. They pretty much have more Lindt flavours than our whole confectionery shelves in some places.
I have just read a load of your Lindt reviews and really fancy the Stacciatella white chocolate bar linked in at the bottom. Please can you tell me where I can buy on in England.
Thanks for the help
The only coffee chocolate I like is the Ritter cappuccino. Apart from that one I always think they are too strongly flavoured. I think you must be the polar opposite to me as you always seem to say that they aren't strong enough.
This is a special chocolate by the sounds of it. You should try reviewing some more rubbish chocolates. I know it sounds odd but the reviews where you get angry are the best ones lol.
Yuck I can't stand coffee at all it tastes like dishwater. I would be giving this bar a miss if you offered it to me.
It comes as little surprise you like this chocolate if you love coffee. What does bemuse me is that Hotel Chocolat don't make any sort of coffee chocolate. That is very odd if you ask me.
I do like Lindt's dark chocolate but I am not a coffee man so I probably wouldn't by this.
I don't recall ever seeing you review it, but if you haven't you should try the Lindt Excellence Ginger chocolate. It is very tasty if you like spicier chocs.
Michelle isn't wrong. You guys would be amazed by the sheer number of flavours that they have in Germany. I couldn't believe it when I went their last year. In this one shop I went in they had to be verging on having over a hundred different Lindt things.
mmmm nothing goes better with a double espresso that a few blocks of really strong tasting coffee chocolate.
Last week I discovered the delights of Hagen-Daz's coffee ice cream. You should really give it a try if you have never.
One of my favourites, and a welcome change from most coffee flavoured chocolates which are much too weak for my liking. Pair a chunk of this with a double espresso - heaven!
Steven,
Jim pointed out to someone the other day that the Crunchy Caramel isn't actually a new bar at all. It is just repackaged (it used to come in gold coloured excellence box if I am right. I will still try it though don't worry. Thank your for the tip off.
I don't often drink coffee because of the caffine downer I get it from it, but when I do I always have to make sure I have it with some sort of dark chocolate to eat alongside it. There is something so right about having chocolate and coffee together. You should never have one without the other in my opinion.
Sorry but this does not take my fancy at all. I don't like dark chocolate and I don't like coffee. Lol this is not something I would buy.
My mum and probably my sister too would love this. If I ever see it in the shops I'll buy her/them a bar, she loves coffee chocolate aswell, esp dark since she said dark chocolate goes much better with coffee than milk chocolate. She also likes expressos so this is really her cup of coffee! :P
@ Nick - you're right, that someone was me lol they have changed the wrapper (jims one was more like this one, white box with black background or something) the new one is blue. However it says on the new one 'new recipe' so I guess there must be some differnce but since I don't know what the original tasted like I couldn't tell lol
You have rated this so highly I am going to take your advice and give it a try. Thanks for the review.

Daisy
No way! Coffee is liquid gold :D I didn't used to like it mind you.
Nick
Indeed I have. Your reviews should be appearing in the next week or so. They are really going for it with the relaunch of their range. It is good to see them really show some specific effort to the UK.
David
Indeed I do. They have certainly grown their presence here in the UK haven't they. There are still loads of parts of their range we haven't got, but they have really stepped up their distribution of their Excellence range.
Martin
I concur with that entirely. Seemingly quite a few others today agree with us.
Richard
Off the top of my head I think it is. It is the best I can think of at the minute anyway.
Rachel
Haha I think you could be right there :D After tasting so many of their chocolates it is hardly surprising that I can start to identify them by their taste.
Steven
I loved that bar as well. I would highly recommend it.
Michelle
They have loads of different parts to their portfolio we dont get here in the UK. I have reviewed quite a few of them thanks to my contacts in Germany but unfortunately they have gone out of business now.
In Germany especially their range is huge.
Anon
That was one of the bars I had sent over from Germany im afraid. I don't believe you can get it at all in the UK.
Golden
That is one of the milder coffee chocolates isn't it. I still really rate it though. If you like your coffee mild I probably wouldn't suggest you try this chocolate.
James
No way I don't like reviewing bad chocolates. It is entertaining to get stuck in to something every once and a while, but I much prefer writing more positive reviews.
Mysterio
How do you know what dish water tastes like chap :D This is probably one that you are best off leaving alone.
Lauren
It is a bit crazy that Hotel Chocolat haven't made a coffee chocolate yet? If they ever made one, my hopes for it being good would be astronomical.
Paul
It is pretty criminal that I haven't reviewed that bar yet. I will make a point of getting round to it as soon as I can.
I do like ginger chocolates so I am pretty keen.
Estelle
They do literally have hundreds don't they. If you take a look on the German part of the Lindt website you can get some idea of how extensive it is.
Out of interest what shop did you see all that in? I had a few people send me photos of some in shop shelves from Germany a few months ago. The amount of Ritter, Lindt and Milka bars was incredible.
PART 2
Kieran
I do like coffee ice cream but I cant be eating Hagen-Dazs I am afraid. Strictly Ben & Jerrys for me I am afraid. I wish they did a coffee ice cream in the UK - only in the IS at the moment.
Susanne
Espresso eh!? I am more an americano man myself. Without one in the morning I just don't function correctly. You are right, coffee and dark chocolate together are perfect.
Nick
Indeed your right chap. It used to be in the gold coloured cardboard box but now it is just part of the blue and white range.
Chris
I used to get real downers are drinking coffee as well but not so much anymore. I agree that chocolate and coffee go well together, but if I was to always have one with the other I would be terribly unhealthy.
Alicia
I guess we can't all be pleased everyday :D Better luck tomorrow eh?
Alan
I would strongly suggest you treat your family to this if they are fans. It is a really great coffee chocolate that wont break the bank. Let me know what they think of it.
RE: the wrapper. I think it made sense moving it out of the gold coloured one. It did look slightly odd on its own didn't it.
Anon
Good stuff - let me know what you think of it. Leave your name next time.
Thanks everyone! No idea what is up tomorrow - I hope you are all enjoying this amazing weather! Its so hot :D
JIM
Hmm..it's been a few months since I tried them but wasn't one of the Hotel Chocolat 'melting hearts' flavors coffee? 47% doesn't sound like much cocoa for a dark bar, is there a minimum amount it needs to be 'dark', or is it more like a lack of milk?
I think I tried this once when it was on offer. I'm funny with coffee chocolate, sometimes I like it sometimes I don't. I don't like those with gritty bits of coffee beans in.
This is the best chocolate I have ever tasted... by miles. I was devastated, therefore, when Lindt stopped selling it in Spain (where I live). If anyone knows of a decent Lindt mail-order site, please let me know!!
