May 22nd: Orero Brownie

Kcal 340 Fat 13.0g Fat(sats) 4.5g Carbs 57.0g (per brownie)

The review backlog is getting increasingly larger here on ChocolateMission so this week you are being treated to an extra review instead of the normal '7Days of Chocolate Reviews' post. The reason why the reviews are stacking up so high at the moment, is because I have recently received several deliveries from various site sponsors. One of these companies, Yankee Soda & Candy (a UK based merchant who sell American goods - See website HERE), were the providers of today's product - Kraft Nasbisco's Oreo Brownie. Informing you guys of the product description seems a bit of a pointless task given it's simplicity, but what the hell, it was billed as a 'brownie baked with real Oreo pieces' ... oh really now!?

The brownie came a largish 85.0g format, which I split with a fellow taste tester. From the outset the packaging created a real impression on me, and I was drawn in by both the cool looking Oreo branding on the wrapper, as well as the cheeky areas of transparency which showed off the inner brownie. Removing the brownie from the packet, an array of pleasant baked cake and Oreo biscuit smells became evident. These aromas managed to further my intrigue, which was already sky high thanks to the rather cool aesthetic effect created by the chunks of Oreo cookies visible in the brownie.

Getting straight in to details of the taste test, this product didn't give a freshly baked, straight out the oven brownie experience, but it would have been unrealistic to think it would do so. The chocolate and sweet cake flavours it did deliver were of a more than satisfying quality, and the Oreo pieces brought the cookie flavours to life in nearly every single bite. At this point I would love to continue to lavish the praise on this brownie, however from the outset it was apparent there there was a pretty glaring issue with this product, and it became increasingly detrimental with each mouthful. My main issue (that my fellow taste tester agreed with I may add) was that the texture of the brownie was just way too dry. The brownie needed some sort of icing, or inner filling to balance the dryness of both the brownie and the cookie pieces. The combination of them both created a saliva sponge, and even though I a glass of milk on standby, it still felt like it created a vacuum in the mouth. On reflection, I think I would have struggled to eat one of these by myself if I was faced with that prospect - half provided a more than substantial snack.

Overall Kraft Nabisco got a lot of things right with this product, but the texture and feel of the brownie in the mouth stood out like a sore thumb, and thus has limited it's score on the ChocolateMission rating system. In regards to taste this brownie wasn't the best tasting one I have had recently (check back Tuesday for that haha!!) but it certainly more than held up it's part of the bargain in delivering a fair standard base brownie with an extra cookie punch from the Oreos. Considering the product in that regard, and in light of the packaging and proposition, it would almost certainly be something I would recommend you all try. Unfortunately the texture inhibits me from being able to do just that, as for me it did somewhat spoil the overall experience. What is really frustrating is that this could have been so easily avoided had they just included a layer of Oreo cookie creme running through the middle of the product - why on earth didn't they do this? If you are a fan of Oreo cookies and are a lover of brownies you will probably want to try this and I don't blame you. Just make sure you have a couple of pints of milk to wash it down with.

7.3 out of 10

I like Brownies but don't like Oreos lol it is strange they didn't put a layer of cream inside, that was my immediate thought when you said the cake was very dry. They look cool though, how come we only get plain oreo biscuits here. I might be more tempted by some of the other flavour/varieties.

Have you seen the latest oreo biscuit ad, lol with that little kid splashing his oreo with milk - looks very american, rather than an english one, I suspect it might be as the packet of oreos on the table have a completely different logo on them, with the current one shown at the end! It is probably an old US ad actually, since the logo is the same here and the US isn't it. :)

I found this fascinating snippet of US info about oreo and Ritz being given a 'retro makeover' to test the market for retro products!

An interesting idea - I wonder if it means the Oreo bits were baked twice? Not really surprising that a packaged brownie like this is dry. I'm funny with brownies, I don't like them too dry but I don't like them too squidgy either. I think to get them just right they need lots of dark chocolate added to the mixture, which of course is expensive. In the past I've made gorgeous brownies using lots of 70% dark chocolate.

Awesome an oreo brownie sounds like a great idea. It is a shame they didn't get it completely right though.

Great review. Are that site really ok to use? I am considering buying some 3 Muskteteers for a mates birthday. He loves them.

I don't think I have ever seen such an odd shaped graph lol. It is a bit weird to see something score so highly across the board apart from when it comes to textures. I can't think of any example of this happening.

:( I like your round up blog posts boooo.

What fools. I would have been common sense just to put a layer of Oreo cream in there. Any idiot could have told you that. What a missed opportunity to make something really amazing.

"In regards to taste this brownie wasn't the best tasting one I have had recently (check back Tuesday for that haha!!)"

Oh I wonder who that is going to be made by :) lol I think we can all guess.

I bet this would be delicious with a big dollop of ice cream or fresh cream. I think I am going to buy a brownie for my pudding tonight. Thanks for the review.

Perhaps the whole Kraft take over wont be all that bad if they give us brownies like this. Get in my belly.

You always say the American brownies are too dry. I just looked at your Reese's brownie and Hershey brownie review and you said exactly the same thing. The yanks should take a look at your blog lol.

Is it me or is this just a rubbisher, chunkier version of the Oreo Cakesters? I think if I was going to buy either or I would go for the Cakesters as you can get them one at a time. I don't fancy sinking 340 calories in one snacking session lol.

Hi Jim I hope you are enjoying the lovely weather today.

I know your not doing your normal chocolate news round up today but I couldn't help but laugh when I saw this http://www.topnews.in/chocolate-bar-slow-down-ageing-process-and-cut-wrinkles-2262449

They will do anything to sell chocolate nowadays wont they.

I have seen these amazing Oreo things they do in America called Oreo Ice Cream sandiwches. They look delicious, they basically are Oreo brownies with ice cream in the middle. I bet that would solve the dryness thing perfectly. Ace review!

I got to say I am intrigued to find out what this best brownie ever you had on Tuesday is. Are you going to give us a hint or keep us all in suspense?

The packaging looks really nice indeed. I could never understand the oreo craze. They are fine, but there are lots of sandwich biscuits that taste a lot better.

Come on Kraft pull your fingers out and share the Oreo love with the UK. We like them just as much as the Americans do.

Lucy said...

mmmmmmmm I bet this is a great with a glass of iced cold milk.

I am just eating some ben & jerrys fudge brownie ice cream. Its so hot in London today.

Phil said...

@Ana - Just out of interest what sandwich biscuits have you tried that are better? In the UK we don't really get much choice in that respect.

Lauren said...

Lol I am all chaught up now :-)

I thought these was going to get a better rating that it got because I know you like Oreos. This would have been fab with some of the inner creme in it.

@Phil - I like Bahlsen's Hit biscuits. I can see they only have one Hit flavour listed on the Bahlsen UK website, but here we have a lot of them. I like the cocoa biscuit & cocoa cream version best (actually, that's the version I like best with all sandwich biscuits I try - the more cocoa, the better for me).

We also have Arluy sandwich biscuits, Hellema sandwich biscuits. Or even Gullon sandwich biscuits. The sandwich biscuits of my childhood, Prinzen, have also made a comeback in the past years (they had become quite a rarity while I was a teen). And we also have a local brand, Ulpio.

lol @Alan and Estelle, I wanted to share a chocolate article too, I guess this weekend is readers' roundup :D
http://health.yahoo.com/experts/eatthis/54828/the-chocolate-milk-diet/ My friend always claimed chocolate milk was proven to be the ultimate sports drink, I guess she was right :)

I love the photo on Alan's site, of the extra tall Oreo! The only sandwich biscuits I prefer are orange creams, and Bourbon chocolate cream (the longish kind with sugar sprinkles on top) - and those are just for nostalgic reasons :)

Phil said...

@Ana - thanks for those links. The Bahlsen varieties looks nice! The Ulpio ones look good too.

PART 1

Alan

Nice article. It would be interesting to see what sort of retro makeover they could do with the Oreo. I think the brand is a bit to new for it to mean much on the UK market.

I have seen that new Oreo advert - I think it is a strong suggestion they are trying to target female consumers with the cute kids etc.

I too would like to see more Oreo flavours. They could do start by giving us the mint creme.

Phil

All the best brownies have a optimum level of moistness. Like you say you don't want them bone dry, but you don't want them too sloppy. It is a fine art.

David

Yeh it was fine for what it was, but it could have been far better.

Nick

It has happened before believe me. You are right though it isn't often that products fall away so dramatically on one attribute.

Mysterio

I wouldn't recommend them if I wasn't 100% comfortable with their business operation. They are a great company.

Rachel

Yep it is a missed oppertunity by reckoning. A few minor adujstments and it would be sorted though.

Anon

Sorry - they will be back next week.

Katie

Oh really now!? I don't think you will be surprised who makes it put it that way.

Emma

Did you end up having one? If you are after a quick fix you could do a lot worse buying some of the Thorntons mini brownies.

Mike

Haha I love that saying. Doesn't fat b*stard from Austin Powers say that? Indeed if Kraft upscale operations in the UK I hope they bring more Oreo products to our market.

Steven

Well spotted I had forgotten this myself. Like you say this was also the problem with both the Reese's and the Hershey one.

Both Hershey and Kraft have this problem it seems then.

Alicia

I would go for the Cakesters aswell. Like you say they are more portion controlled which is a good thing in my book. I have a peanut butter Cakesters review coming up soon.

Estelle

So let me get this straight if I want to stay forever young I have to eat loads of chocolate? Wow I may never age :D

Alex

Oreo ice cream sandwiches? Haha they sound pretty damn good. I imagine they would be quite like the Maxibon ice creams we get sometimes in this country.

Colin

I am sure you can hold out until Tuesday for that grand reveal :D

PART 2

Ana

I have tried a few of the Prinzen biscuits but apart from that I haven't heard of many the ones you have listed.

That isn't to say I wouldn't like to try the others mind you :D Biscuits isn't one of our weak points in the UK though.

Anon

Totally agree. It would be great if Kraft brought some more of the Oreo range over here.

Lucy

That is what I like to hear. I hope all my readers have been digging in to the Ben & Jerry's this weekend. It has been an absolute scorcher.

Phil

You don't think!? What about all the usual favourites like custard creams, bournons, vienesse etc? I like all of them myself.

Lauren

I am glad you had a safe journey back. The lack of inner creme was a puzzling exclusion wasn't it.

Thea

Chocolate Milk the ultimate sports drink!? Stick that up your Lucozade eh :D

I agree about Bourbons - there is something wonderfully nostalgic about them. I hope they aren't lost on the next generation It would be criminal if they disappeared.

Thanks everyone - I hope you all had a really nice weekend. The next brownie review is up Tuesday

I'm not a massive custard cream fan Jim although the mighty bourbon is possibly one of the best bikkies ever :) But we do lack variety in actual flavours (ie. why not make a mint flavoured bourbon or something).

I really liked the oreo brownie. You DEFINITELY need something to wash it down with but I liked it.
