Kcal ??? Fat ??? Fat(sats) ??? Carbs ???Not only is it the last day of the month, but it is also the last of my reviews from Hotel Chocolat's Summer Peepster Selection. Having covered off the Tutti Fruitti last year (See HERE), and Cookie Creme and Eton Mess slabs over the last few weeks, the last remaining slab left to try was this Banoffee one. Having heard good things from other review sites and my readers (namely Lottie and Richard) I was really looking forward to seeing how this 'milk and caramel chocolate, with crushed cookies and banana slices' would fair on the rating system. What with my mother being a bit of a chocolate banana connoisseur there was no way I was going to be able to sneak a review up on the site without her noticing - watch out for here candid opinions.
Quelle surprise this slab also came in 100.0g form and it lasted around a day in our household with us all snapping bits off to eat every now and then. In fitting with the rest of the varieties from this summer selection box, the slab looked very appetising and the dried banana pieces were a nice decorative touch to the already grand looking two tone chocolate swirl pattern. Something that is probably worth mentioning about these 100.0g slabs is the difficulty that I had breaking them apart. As I have written about previously, its not often that I can fault Hotel Chocolat slabs aesthetically, but they can sometimes prove a little hard to break up into smaller bits. This minor observation was immediately put to to one side up as I broke the plastic packet seal. Upon doing so a plethora of sweet smelling fruit and toffee scents invaded my senses - this had all the hallmarks of a great chocolate.
Reading the spiel on the wrapper it was comforting to know that a good proportion of this slab constituted of Hotel Chocolat's 40% milk chocolate recipe, and it proved to be just as good as ever but with an additional banana twist. Indeed, the chocolate maintained all of it's standard cream based cocoa flavours, but had a lovely note of very real tasting banana which came through strongly in latter stages of the thick melt. Although my mother was especially loving the banana chocolate, I personally thought that the bites where both the caramel chocolate and the banana flavoured milk chocolate were swirled together were the best. In these mouthfuls the buttery, salted toffee influences of the caramel further enhanced the depth of the flavours making the resulting taste even more varied and enjoyable. The cookie pieces that lined the bottom of the slab failed to create much of an impact on the taste, however the same can't be said of the banana chips which further went to reinforce the banana flavours. Although in the context of the taste the cookie bits didn't add much, they did at least bring a a decent crunchyness texture wise, which contrasted nicely from the soft melting chocolate.
Overall this was another very well executed flavour combination from Hotel Chocolat and it certainly met all my expectations. It would have been easy to have forgotten about the caramel element to Banoffee Pie and just focused on the banana flavours, but it was great to see Hotel Chocolat recognise the importance of both and combine them to such great effect. Being the big banana chocolate fan that is she is, I knew that this chocolate was going to be good when my Mother did the honours eating the first bit and then exclaiming it was 'the best ever'. Personally I don't think this is the best chocolate I have ever tasted, but believe me when I say that is very good indeed. If you have little interest in bananas then I don't think this will be your sort of chocolate, but on the other hand if you have just the smallest urge to try this chocolate I very much recommend you do so. This is definitely one for you banana lovers and has proved to be a fitting end to my reviews from this delicious Summer Peepster Selection.

I just knew you were going to love this. It is so amazing how they got the banana flavours in to the chocolate. This is one of my favourite Hotel Chocolat chocolates ever I think.
Dx
How come yours came with bits of banana on top? Mine had none :o
I am going back to Hotel Chocolat next week to buy a big stock of these.
Lol this was never going to have a hard time becoming the best banana chocolate we have here because I can't even think of an alternative.
It does sound like it is pretty special mind you. I'm no big banana lover but I might give it a try.
Are those bits of biscuit in the bottom? They should have put bits of banana chips instead. apart from that it looks great - a real must try if you like bananas I guess.
My brother and I came up with the following order for how much we liked the chocolates from this box.
1= Best 4= worst
1. Banoffee
2. Eton Mess
3. Cookie Creme
4. Tutti Fruitti
The Banoffee was so good we ate that one in one. We didn't like the tuttie fruitti much because we don't like white chocolate that much. The Eton Mess we liked though.
I only like real banana, for some reason I really don't like banana flavoured things. I might contemplate trying this at some point, but there are so many other chocolates I want to try from them first.
I'm not a great banana lover but I do like Banoffee pie (usually). This sounds quite interesting! not sure about the biscuit bits, but I guess they add crunch!
Oh no another thing to add to my Hotel Chocolat shopping list. At the rate this is going by the I get to one of their shops my list is going to be longer than my average grocery list. Thanks again for another brill review Jim.

I can eat a big bag of banana chips to myself :-) What a great idea to add them on top of the chocolate.
This chocolate sounds so sinful :-) lol I bet there are some people that will try and claim it is good for because it has some fruit content in it.
Combining caramel and banana flavour chocolate sounds like a top idea to me. I bet it lands the banoffee effect really well when you eat them together.
I have a great idea for a product they could make.
Wouldn't it be awesome if they took the banana chips (like the ones on top of this bar) and then dipped them in dark chocolate. I would buy them on their own. I bet they would be cheap as chips to make lol.
This looks like yet another hell of a chocolate from these guys. I know I sometimes complain that they are expensive but some of their things justify the money.
The last chocolates I had from them were their Easter eggs box of chocolates. I didn't think much of the toffee banana in there but this sounds great.
I must be in a minority because I don't like the sound of it, the reason is because I dislike those dried banana chips. The rest sounds nice though. I guess this is the closest anyone could come to making a good banana flavoured chocolate so well done to them.
Swoooooon I have instantly fallen in love with this. This is going to be a must try for me now. I love banana flavoured anything ..... ice cream, milkshake, even those dodgy foam banana sweets you can get.
I'm not going to buy any of the other slabs this summer. I am just going to go for one of the mega sized ones.
I can't understand people that like banana flavoured things. They never taste anything like real banana. I can't speak about this chocolate from experience, but if it is like any other banana chocolates I have ever tasted it wont be one I would rave about.
Omg I would do anything to have some of this today :( Boo hiss for it being a bank holiday. I am way to inpatient to wait for things to arrive in the post so I wont be buying it off there. I will have to wait until tomorrow now :(

Thank you Hotel Chocolat for finally answering all our prayers and making a decent banana choc.
I will be trying this as a matter of urgency.
I knew you were going to like this. I haven't bought that much from Hotel Chocolat recently because I'm a bit tight for money. As soon as I saw this slab I had to try it right away though and I wasn't disappointed.
It is a slab of theirs I will definitely be buying again.
This flavour is going to have it's own fanclub by the end of the day, muchos loving flying in for this one it seems.
They should have put some of their famous caramel puddles on top, or better yet some caramel running through the centre. Tell me that wouldn't have been a good idea :)
Spot on Jim. This was one of my favourite products I have bought from Hotel Chocolat for a long time.
The balance of the banana and the caramel is really terrific. I would eat it all day if you gave me the chance to do so.
Naughty Jim this review is not helping me fight my chocolate addiction :)
I'm afraid that any hopes I had of getting my bikini out this summer just faded when I read this lol.
I'm a one a day banana eater so you can probably tell I would be very much liking a banana choccie. Is this only going to be around for the summer or are they planning on making it a constant one?
Sounds delicious. Was this your favourite from this box of chocolates?
PART 1
Daisy
Well you weren't wrong if you did indeed predict I was going to like this. It is one of the best Hotel Chocolat chocolates I have tasted for a long time.
Katie
You didn't get any? Didn't it look a bit plain without them?
I would go back to Hotel Chocolat and complain :D who knows what you might get?
David
That is very true it isn't as if we know anything better. I think it is safe to say this was a pretty exceptional chocolate mind you. I would suggest you give it a try.
Nick
They are indeed. I would have liked to have seen some banana chips in the middle aswell. Definitely a must try if you are a banana fan.
Kim
I would agree with your top two but I would put the tutti fruiti above the cookie creme. To be honest they were all pretty damn special in their own right. You would hardly complain if you got given any of them.
Duncan
I think you would be surprised at how 'real' the banana tasted in this chocolate. I was expecting something more along the lines of artifical tasting. You are right there are so many things to try from their range it is difficult to know what to try next.
Alan
The biscuit bits did merge in to the background of the chocolates a bit, but hey like you say they brought something to the party texture wise. Ever since I had this chocolate I have been trying all sorts of banana things.
Rachel
Sorry but it looks like your list just got one longer :D I know what you are saying about your grocery list. Sometimes my cuboards have more chocolate in than they do groceries :D I guess that comes with being a chcocolate reviewer mind you.
Anon #1
They were a nice touch weren't they. Poor old Rachel didn't get any though did she.
Steven
I'm not too sure that many people will think it is good for them. It certainly wont count towards the 5 a day like someone asked about another chocolate the other day. It was the combination of the banana and caramel chocolates that made this slab so tasty - they were delicious when they were swirled together in the middle.
Ryan
I like the sound of that for sure. They could do it with all types of dried fruit couldn't they. Apricots, Mango, Apple! I think you have a great idea there. You should patent it :D
Richard
I thought that about their toffee banana chocolates aswell. They always seem to be a bit underpowered in the banana department. Thankfully this was not the case at all with this slab. It really had the banana kick that I was hoping it would have.
Phil
You could solve that by picking them off matey! If you look at my photo you can probably see that one of the chips had fallen off already :D
If it just them that you are a bit wary of then you might still want to check this slab out.
PART 2
Lauren
I have recently started liking all things banana aswell. Banana flavoured Frijj to be exact! I can't get enough of the stuff.
I would recommed the large Banoffee slab. I think I am going to treat my mum to one as it is her birthday coming up :D I probably shouldn't write that as she reads the site.
Tricky
I know what you mean. Sometimes banana flavoured things can taste terribly artifical. This wasn't the case at all with this chocolate though. They did really well making sure the banana came through very 'real' tasting.
Emma
So good you had to say it twice Eh!? :D
Don't worry I am sure the shops will be open tomorrow. I hope you have managed to hold out :D The sooner you put orders in online the sooner things come you know :D
Estelle
As a matter or urgency :D haha I don't know why but that made me laugh. Good luck finding it.
Golden
Glad to hear that you liked it aswell. Its not often than I buy things that get sent to me as samples but I think I will be buying a few of these banoffee slabs sometime soon. For manufacturers it is all about getting people to repeat purchase... they got me doing it with this chocolate thats for sure.
Nigel
Your not wrong I think it could well have a fanclub by the end of the summer.
I like the idea of the caramel puddles. I think they might have even put them on the large Banoffee slab you know. I also like the idea of some caramel running through the middle! Your full of bright ideas you.
Paul
Glad to hear yet another person has tried and liked this slab. Like Nigel said it could well have a real following soon. I'm not sure I could eat it all day mind you :D
Agnes
Don't blame me! Blame Hotel Chocolat.
Alicia
Haha that made me laugh - everything in moderation and I think you will still manage it :D
I have no idea what they plan to do with it after summer. You better stock up for the minute though as it could well be gone after summer.
Anon
It was indeed my favourite out of these four. As I said above all of them were pretty special in there own way though.
Thanks for the feedback everyone - I am sure Hotel Chocolat will be reading it all when they get in to work tomorrow.
JIM
http://uk.biz.yahoo.com/28052010/389/five-things-t-live.html lol how about combining 2 in 1 then, like chocolate cell phone covers?
Ive been loving this banoffee chocolate, i said at the start of these summer slabs you would like this one :D.
I just wish Hotel Chocolat would change the format of their slabs as i seem to be able to eat through a whole one way to quickly :), they should just make some slots in the back to enable you just to be able to break of a square of so.
Great review again mate.
P.S you going to be doing any ice cream chocolate reviews? seeing summer is here (well our english one lol)
Oh the genius! Hurray for the banoffee slab! I shared this (!) with a friend and we enjoyed it so much we even high-fived and danced around a bit.
Seriously HC really did a number with this summer peepster box. I would give them medals if I had it on good authority. All the slabs were nothing short of exquisite and quality of the first water. Heart them!
Thea
I was offered one of those and didn't fancy it. I thought it looked a bit silly.
Matthew
Indeed I think it is a commonlly felt thing that they should make their slabs easier to break up ... lets see if they do anything about it without compromising how cool they look.
Re: Ice Cream reviews - unfortunately not for the minute. I have no space in which to review them. I have a backlog nearing 6 weeks with a lot of clients wanting reviews up. Busy times are good times I guess. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Lottie
Indeed you set my expectations sky high, but HC managed to knock all the pins down.
This was one of my favourite Peepster boxes of all time, though I think the dark chocolate one I had a few years ago just pips it.
I seemingly say this about everything, but I think this would be a great present. It has a little bit of everything doesn't it.
Cheers you three.
JIM
