Kcal 97 Fat 5.3g Carbs 11.0g (per 17.9g packet)This review starts with some good and bad news. The bad news is that I am coming to the end of my latest sample package from J-List Boooo! The good news is that today I get to complete a long standing request from ChocolateMission reader Steven, who what seems like ages ago now asked me to review these Pocky Dessert Chocolat Fromage. In fact, Glico Pocky is one of the most commonly mentioned ranges when it comes to reader requests, and I have to admit up until this point I probably haven't really paid enough attention to this particular part of the Japanese market. In an attempt to start putting things right today, I bring you my review of these Chocolat Fromage flavoured Pocky, which I believe sits in the higher end 'Desserts' part of the range.
This particular variant came segregated in to five 17.9g packs that consisted of three stick pieces in each. In previous experiences with the Pocky range I have always thought that the presenatation has been of a great standard, however these Chocolat Fromage took things yet another step further and really came across as premium offering from the brand. The sense of premiumality was driven mostly by the prestigious looking design of the outer box which was beautifully designed with well placed branding and pictures. Inside the actual Pocky was equally as pleasant on the eye, and if you look above you will hopefully be able to determine that the stick pieces were far thicker than standard Pocky, with each decorated with a generous beige coloured coating with woven chocolate on top.
Once I had finally got over marvelling at the aesthetic beauty of the Pocky the next thing I took notice of was the strong toffee yogurt like scents that were emanated from each of the individual plastic packets. As good as the Pocky smelt and looked, the true determinant was of course going to be the taste, so I straight away set about putting them to the test. Taking my first bite from the tip of one of the sticks I was first struck by a sweet tasting milk chocolate which was a nice way to start each bite as the chocolate flavour hit was established from the outset. As the chocolate melted away smoothly, the under fromage layer was exposed and it soon had an equally strong say in the taste. The fromage element brought a delicious cream cheese like influence, and it's yoghurty nature reminded me of the sort of flavours you get from mascarpone desserts like cheesecake. The base sticks were nothing more than what you would expect from Pocky, with their crunchy nature bringing all the usual moreish wheaty, brown sugar flavour notes to the party. In comparison to other Pocky products I have had previously I felt these were more satisfying, and found just one of the five mini packs a decent amount for a light snack.
Overall although I don't have extensive experience with the brand, I have to say that these were the best Pocky I have ever tasted. I guess having tasted only four other Pocky variants previously it isn't the greatest claim to make, however if you ignore that and just look at the scoring matrix it should give you some sort of idea of how much I liked these. If I was to sum up the taste in just three words I think it could be best described as 'delicious chocolate cheesecake'. Indeed, the flavours were very reminiscent of slightly tangy mascarpone and the generous portioning of the woven chocolate that coated each piece proved to be not only there for decoration, but also to ensure that the all important chocolate flavour hit was present in each and every bite. One of the most frustrating things I find with products like Mikado and Pocky is that they are often annoyingly moreish, but this wasn't quite the case here. The three sticks per pack made for decent sized portions, and whilst I could have easily eaten more at a time I thought that it was a sensible amount for each serving. If you are a Pocky fan then I would really recommend these a flavour well worth trying. After this success I am very much open to more requests for other flavours of Pocky that I should review.

As soon as I saw "Chocolat Fromage" I knew this is not something I'd want to try. Fromage is the French word for cheese... and I can't stand cheese...
This is one of my bestest Pocky flavours. I am glad you think the same. :> :>
This site is crazy. One day you review the most British thing ever (shortbread), and then the next you are reviewing a wacky Japanese product lol. It is nice to see you keep these interesting.
Hi Jim,
Sorry to be a fussy boots but can I put in a really small request? Can you add a Pocky tag onto all your Pocky posts?
I know it is a stupid thing to ask you to do but it would make finding things a lot simpler.
Nice review today. I have a shopping list of Japanese chocolates now.
Rxxx
Those are some of the prettiest Pocky ever. The only ones I have ever eaten have looked exactly like the Mikado flavours we get in this country.
It would be amazing to one day try a cheesecake flavour like this one. I could see them doing really well if they got released here.
They do mean chocolate cheesecake right? Not chocolate cheese?
That would be wrong on so many levels don't you think?
Thank you for coming good on my request Jim I knew you would. I don't know what it is about Pocky but I have a massive soft spot for it.
It is such a shame that it is so expensive to buy off the internet. If I bought ever flavour I would be penny-less. At least I have you to point me in the direction of the good ones lol.
Jim have you ever tried the savoury version of poccky called pretz? They don't sound like they should be that nice but trust me it works just as good with flavours like salt and pepper than it does with chocolate. Im not saying stop the chocolate reviews (noooooo) but I think you might like also like them.
I love your Pocky posts Jim. If you ever get the chance to write more of them please do :)
Lol David you aren't wrong. We went from best of Blighty to best of Japan in the space of 24 hours. Love it.
You can add me to the list of people that want to see more pocky reviews Jim. They are always a good read.
Steven I think when they put 'chocolat fromage' they mean chocolate mascarpone. I don't think they mean chocolate cheddar LMAO. Now that would be disgusting ...... or maybe it wouldn't? *ponders*
Jim,
It's nice to see your dedication when it comes to finding the best pocky flavours. Can I too add my vote for a pocky tag, I don't think many people know that they are actually made by the Glico company. They tend to be a little hard to find if you don't know that.
Sorry for grumbling. We only mention these things because we want to be able to easily read your brilliant reviews :)
I am ashamed to admit that I have never tried any Pocky before. From what I can tell they are just the same as Mikados aren't they? Everyone at college is obsessed with them but I have never been fussed about them in the slighest. I have never been one to take to snacks that don't fill me up.
I am only one who is always excited about these things but when i get them just feel well blah - underwhelmed lol the damn things are to SMALL! lol you need a mega one :D at least 120mm long and 1inch diameter to even call it a snack I say :P or else i would much my way through the entire pack haha.
Nice review mate :)
It's always nice to see you do a Pocky review Jim. If you look on some of the other Japanese snack review site I don't think Pocky is as popular as it once was in Japan (Kit Kats now rule) but they are still bringing out a shed load of new flavours each month.
This looks like it is one of the better ones they have come up with. I think it isn't one of the newest though. I remember seeing it a few months ago on a site called napa japan.
The best Pocky flavour I have ever had is the mandarin chocolate flavour. I would recommend it if you like chocolate orange. the biscuit bit just makes it extra yum.
Have you read about the new Crunchie flake clusters that cadburys have just made. It would be good to see a review.
It must be exciting getting to try all these different chocolates and candy, I'm uber jealous. Pardon me for being nosey but is this your job? If it is you are living every man and womens dream :)
They are also my favourite Pocky, I got some last March in Tokyo and really enjoyed them. The individual plastic packets are very luxury and the overall quality is amazing.
Great review, Jim ^^
Is Pocky the same thing as Mikado? I always get the two mixed up.
I must say upon hearing the words "chocolat fromage" I didn't like the sound of these, I love cheesecake but am not so keen on cheesecake confectionary after the awful Nestle Little Notions cheesecake bar from years back. But that's just a bad association, I'm sure these actually taste very nice.
These look really nice, more substantial than normal ones!
@ Dan Crunchie Flake clusters? they sound nice! not heard of them! Cadbury are bringing out alot of new products at the mo, which can't be bad :D
Jim do you have a clue as to when JLIST are stopping orders on chocolate? I wont be able to put an order in until next week but I don't want to miss the timeframe.
Brilliant review Jim. I did have my eye on these but they don't appear on Jlist anymore if you search for them. These look bigger than the normal Pocky, which can only be a good thing.
Thanks for the reivew.
Ana
I think you are thinking about the wrong sort of cheese. Fromage also refers to things like mascarpone etc! That is a sweet dairy cheese substance (bloody nice trust me!!!)
Sakura
Indeed - It is definitely one of the nicest Pocky I have reviewed.
David / Richard
Indeed that is how I roll :D No point standing still chaps. I will endeavour to keep bringing you Japanese reviews don't you worry.
Rachel / Diane
No problem. I have noted this down so next time I am tinkering with all the labels I will make sure I add some of the brands people keep asking for ... Pocky, Galaxy, Kit Kat ... people keep asking for them.
Kim
I don't think you should hold your breath waiting for these cheesecake flavoured ones to hit the UK. I don't think we will ever see something this cool over here.
Steven
Yeh I am pretty they mean cheesecake/mascarpone etc.
Lauren
No problem. You know I like doing readers requests. It would be an expensive habit buying every single flavour you fancy. Hopefully I can give you a good steer as to which are the ones worth buying.
Helena
I can't say I have to be honest. I will make sure I ask my people at J-List if I can have some next time. I will take a look through all the flavours.
Emma
I always tell J-List that my readers want to see Pocky reviews. I will reiterate the point again so they send some more next time.
Justin
Yep I do think it stands for cheesecake or mascarpone. I don't think chocolate cheddar would work out :D
Nick
Mikado and Pocky are both made by Glico so no you aren't wrong in thinking they are similar. I also find them frustrating hunger fulfilment wise but these were better as they were far thicker.
Matthew
I like your idea of one mega Pocky that would a cool thing for them to do.
I can't see it happening mind you. I think the Japanese prefer small dainty things as opposed to our culture who seems to be more inclined to the 'king' size chocolates.
Golden
I think you are right. I think that Pocky are two trends ago now! I think the last fad was Kit Kats and now it is Crunky! That is what my J-List guy says anway!
I think you are right. These aren't one of the newest flavours around.
Dan
I will look out for the orange flavored ones.
RE: Cadbury Crunchie Bites - they are on the radar don't you worry! I will get a review up as soon as I find them.
Alex
No it isn't my job - it is just a hobby. One day maybe ... one day :D
Frenchy
They do look cool in the seperate packets don't they. It made them nice and convenient for taking to eat outside the house aswell. They seem better at portion control than we do in the UK.
Phil
They are made by the same people chap (Glico!) so yeah they are pretty much exactly the same product.
I don't remember this Nestle bar? What sort of date was it around. Was it really that bad.
Alan
For the first time ever I get to point you in the direction of an article :D
http://www.marketingmagazine.co.uk/News/MostEmailed/999421/Cadbury-launch-Crunchie-Rocks-combination-sweet/
They look cool huh!? Nothing wrong with new products now :D
Eric
I have asked my guy this question. As soon as he answers I will feedback the answer to you.
GeekBoiii
No problem. Thanks for your kind words. Unfortunately I think J-List are sold out of these now. I will ask if they are coming back in stock for you.
Thanks everyone - it was good to finally get this Pocky review up. It has been requested for a long time.
JIM
They look really cool! Will def have to try them when I see them! Thats what i mean, its great to see all these new products, it puts Mars and to some extent Nestle to shame lol. They both like to think theyre coming up with new products but really theyre not lol
This chocolate is like yum yum!...I've always wanted to have this....
