June 11th: Zotter Scotch Whisky

Kcal ??? Fat ??? Fat(sats) ??? Carbs ???

My tireless investigation of Zotter's Handscooped bars range continued today with me checking out their Scotch Whisky chocolate. You may recall that it was only few weeks ago that I reviewed Zotter's Muscat Wine with Grapes bar, and it managed to score pretty well on the ChocolateMission rating system (See HERE). As I stated in that last review, I am no big drinker but even I was curious to see what Zotter could do with a bar combining 'dark chocolate filled with whisky cream'. Looking at the ingredients list, the 6% whisky content came across as plentiful to me, so I was expecting it to really be brought to life in the filling.

Aligned with the rest of the Handscooped range this came in a 70.0g bar, and I shared it with my father who just to happens to enjoy the odd drop of fine whisky. In terms of the wrapper, the bar still looked like a premium proposition, but I don't think the artwork was the best looking I have ever seen. My main issue was that colours were all very similar, thus I wouldn't say the packaging stood out particularly strongly in any manner. When it came to the actual chocolate the usual lack of branding was again noteworthy, though the distinction between the outer layer of chocolate and smooth looking truffle filling did manage to ignite my excitement to a reasonable degree.

Taking in the smells on offer this was obviously going to be a very rich tasting chocolate as the cocoa scents emanated were very forthcoming. Biting into the chocolate the visual presentation of the chocolate was nicely indicative of the textures on offer, with the outer layer breaking with a nice crispness to reveal the softer truffle layer below. Just as promised from the aromas, the 70% chocolate was indeed very flavoursome and it straightaway brought strong unsweetened cocoa flavours to the party with it's smooth flowing taste. Having read about the plentiful contents of the scotch whisky in the ingredients, I was expecting the filling to bring a strong set of malty alcohol fueled flavours to the taste, and a pleasurable warming sensation to the mouth. As is often the case what I expected, and what was reality were two very different things. Whilst there was an undeniable alcohol element detectable it never came through with any great strength, and it more lingered in the background as an odd sweet, fruity tasting undercurrent. On the whole this added flavour dimension wasn't bad tasting, but it certainly wasn't what I expected, and thus it didn't particularly satisfy my expectations - neither my Father's.

Overall this Zotter Scotch Whisky bar was really saved by one thing, and that was the undeniable high quality Zotter dark chocolate. If this was a product just to be viewed in a light of being a dark chocolate bar, the scores would be a lot more favourable because the chocolate was both rich tasting and very flavoursome. Unfortunately though this came billed as a scotch whisky flavoured chocolate, and when looked upon in this regard it has to be said that it failed to deliver on what it promised. I'm no experienced whisky drinker, but even I could tell that the flavours on offer from the Whisky Cream centre were not what you would expect. One of the other glaring errors for me with this chocolate was that it was also lacked the warming heat feeling that you get from drinking whisky. It wasn't like I wanted a throat burning sensation, but I personally see it as a key part of the whisky experience and this was sadly lacking. Having tried so many really high quality Zotter products previously I would suggest you are best off looking at another one of their offerings. I can't imagine even the fondest of whisky drinkers would enjoy this all that much.

Oooh not a good score for Zotter is it? I hate whisky so I don't think I would have contemplated this before your review anyway.

I always say this but I think the Zotter wrappers are so cool looking. Do you have any clue what is on this one though?

Its a shame to hear that this wasn't the usual high quality that Zotter normally is.

This is a damn shame as I was thinking of buying my dad some zotter chocolates for fathers day :( I was thinking this was going to be one of the bars I was going to buy as well. I will have to rethink now.

I normally like whisky chocolates so I was hoping this would score a bit better so I had an excuse to buy it.

I think the best whiksy truffles you can buy are the hot shots that hotel chocolat make. They don't sell them online at the moment though its a right pain.

I read the word whisky and was immediately disinterested. I think putting spirit alcohol in chocolate is the quickest way to ruin it. It always ends up overpowering the chocolate.

I think I will stick with the wine chocolate you reviewed a week ago :) I'm far more partial to a glass of red than I am a nightcap. I would still like to try this at some point though.

Jim you bastard you have just ruined all my plans for Fathers day. Well not totally lol. I'm going to John Lewis in London at the weekend and I was planning to buy my father a few Zotter bars for fathers day.

Have you tried the beer chocolate yet? Theres no review but could you give me a yay or nay if you have? I don't want to give my dad anything pants.

This whisky chocolate proves my point again that all the Zotter chocolates look the same.
I like the fact they dress them up all nicely in those arty farty wrappers but they don't seem to bother with the chocolate which I think is a mistake.

Gawddammmmmit. This was one of the flavours I put on an order the other day. Oh well I guess I will be able to make my own judgement about it. It is annoying though, they aren't exactly cheap to buy.

I thought you guys were all pulling my leg when I mentioned a beer flavoured chocolate last week :O then I found this ....

Thats mental. Jim you have to do a review on that flavour please.

Its a shame to see their attempt at a whisky flavoured chocolate wasn't as good as their wine flavour.

Doesn't that seem a bit odd to you? You see whisky chocolates all the time, I would have thought this would have been basic for Zotter to get right -obviously not by the looks of it.

I ordered some Zotter chocolates after reading your blog week just gone.

Anna if you are reading this thanks ever so much for finding a site for me to buy from. I don't really like whisky so this wasn't one of the flavours I chose.

I bought a butter caramel, wine and one of their laboko chocolate bars. I can't wait for them to arrive.

Thank you for your review.

The world cup is starting today Jim who do you think is going to win it? You have to say England look good don't they.

I just read your twitter feed Jim => I'm getting worried by the amount of alcohol you are eating Lmao. I think you need some help.

I really hate all those strong spirits and such so would never buy this but it is surprising they havent got it right. I wouldve thought it would be fairly straightforward to do compared to their other bizarre flavours. The wrapper is rather 'stodgy' isn't it, rather dry and fusty, I think they couldve done something better design wise.

I'm still half considering buying this for fathers day anyway. Last Christmas I bought him some whisky truffles from Thorntons which he liked (and ate all to himself the greedy bugger).
I would be interested to see what he would think of this. Zotter always looks really expensive aswell which is a good thing for presents =>

I hate spirits. My boyfriend loves his JD and coke so I would think he would probably appreciate this more than I would.

I wouldn't buy it for him though. I would always pick a flavour that I would fancy nicking some of aswell lol.

Liqueur chocolates are disgusting they always taste so bitter. katie I think I once tried one of those whisky truffles from Thorntons. It totally killed my throat it was disgusting.

Review the butter caramel if you can. I think it is a bar they make especially for peoples birthdays.

Nice review this is one I might have thought about buying so thanks for the warning. I do enjoy your Zotter reviews they always do such crazy flavours.

Damn what a shame. I find it funny how you continue to score their wackier flavours better than their safer more common ones.

@Mark does have a point about all their chocolates looking the same. I think its pretty odd considering the amount of effort they put in to the wrappers :S

Best stay clear then my friend. If you didn't fancy it in the first place I think it will do little to change your mind.

Rachel

It isn't made very clear because of my photograph but it is actually a picture of stonehenge ... Scotch Whisky get it?

Nick

If your Dad likes Whisky chocolates (like my one does!) I would suggest you got for some of Hotel Chocolat's Whisky Hot Shots. They are stupendous! The best whisky truffles I know of anyway.

Nigel

I totally agree about the HC Whisky Hot Shots. Last time I check they had some in their online shop. It is probably worth checking again if I were you. If not I am sure they will be selling them instore for Fathers day.

Daisy

Not everyone is going to be a fan of liqueur chocolates I guess. Its like most things there are always people that like some flavors and others that don't.

Darren

The Muscatt Wine was really worth trying if you like your wine. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on it.

Steven

I was sent a bar of Zotter's beer chocolate last week ... that review is up on Fathers day I believe. Like you assume I don't want to spoil it .. but yeh it's pretty damn tasty :D

Mark

A comment so precious you said it twice eh ;) I do understand what you saying completely. I make reference to it in quite a few of my upcoming reviews actually. I to would like to see them try decorate the actuals bars more.

Stu

Oh well, just remember this is only my opinion. You may well really like it. Fingers crossed eh! Let me know your thoughts.

Alex

As I said above my review of that bar is coming up on the site on the 20th.

Justin

I guess in a way it could be seen as an 'easier' flavour to make. I just take things at face value with Zotter - I go by the belief now that they can make any flavour combination work.

Tony

Ana did indeed do a great job of finding some sources for you all to buy from. I like the sound of the butter caramel. It certainly sounds my sort of chocolate.

Anon #1

Of course England are going to win :D Nah I fancy Brazil or Spain to do it. You can never discount the Germans or the Italians though.

Lauren

Indeed I have gone from wine, to spirits, to beer with Zotter :D I have never had so much alcohol in my life haha.

Alan

In my next review I did a bit of digging in to who actually designs these odd wrappers! Why don't you have a read up yourself before it appears sometime next week.

Not all the designs the guy makes are that compelling are they. This one certainly wasn't.

Katie

My old man likes the Thorntons ones aswell. I hope I haven't put you off entirely - remember this is just one guys opinion. Please try it and share your own.

Estelle

Haha that is a very sneaky trick. I often do that myself when I gift chocolates to my family though.

Mysterio

As I said above I guess liqueur chocolates aren't to everyones taste.

Andy

I will see if Mr Zotter has any in stock. The other I requested recently was his strong coffee bar but he had none left :(

Anon #2

I love writing reviews for Zotter myself. The flavours you can get are like nothing anyone else offers.

Paul

That isn't always the case - take a look at the honey trio and birds eye chilli bars. They are pretty sane flavours and they scored well.

Thanks everyone - I am away for the weekend but will verify your comments via my Iphone!

one last things ..... COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
