June 25th: Zotter Labooko Ein BlumenstrauB

Recently I have been sampling many of the flavours from Zotter's Hand-Scooped bars range, but some of you may recall me dipping in to another part of their range called Labooko a few months ago. Indeed, the Nicaragua 60% and Peru 40% bars I tried in my last Labooko review reaffirmed the point that Zotter should be recognised as a high quality chocolate producer, and not just a brand renowned for it's wild flavour combinations.

Saying that, just when I thought that the Labooko range was the less adventurous side of Zotter's portfolio, things really couldn't have got anymore 'wild' with this Ein BlumenstrauB offering that I am reviewing today. For those not fluent in German, I believe Ein BlumenstrauB means 'a bouquet', and the 70.0g package consisted of two separate 35.0g bars.

The beautiful looking packaging was adorned with another fine looking Gratze illustration, and it of course opened up the in unique Labooko style (a bit like a book). Once I had finished carefully opening the wrapper up (it was so nice looking it would have been awful to carelessly rip it open!), I prised apart the inner golden foil wrappers to reveal two very unique looking chocolates. If you look at the photos above you will see that both had small flecks of dried flowers sat on the bottom side of each bar. I had never seen anything like it to be honest - it looked brilliant, but of course it was going to be a matter of how they affected the taste.

Zotter Labooko Ecuador 60% Milk with Roses (Bottom Darker Bar) - This was very similar in taste to the Nicaragua 60% bar I reviewed in my last Labooko review, though there was a certain little something offered by the roses that added to experience ever so slightly. Just as I experienced before, this 60% recipe offered a smooth flowing cocoa taste that had a pleasant undercurrent of milk present throughout. It was certainly a richer, full bodied chocolate than your average milk chocolate, though it wasn't ever anything overly imposing or bordering on being bitter as it maintained a consistent sweetness. During the later stages of the chocolate melting, the dry bits of flowers first became noticeable in texture, but then increasingly so in the sweet, floral finish. The effect on the aftertaste was certainly pleasant, but the slight roughness it brought to the melt was less so.

8.3 out of 10

Zotter Labooko Cashew Nougat with Meadow Flowers (Top Lighter Bar) - This chocolate came billed as an entirely different proposition to the Ecuador 60% and constituted of 26% cocoa solids and 23% cashews. To be honest this was more of a gianduja chocolate rather than a solid chocolate bar so it won't surprise you to hear the pace of melt and flavour delivery were very different. The bar itself was very soft when cut into and it melted at nearly twice the pace of your average chocolate with a very pleasant smouldering softness. Although the melt was fast, the taste was flavoursome and delivered a fine plethora of honey, nut, vanilla and cream flavours. In terms of richness and depth, this chocolate wasn't comparable to that above, but the flavours were just so moreish and beautifully contrasting with the nutty salt licks and floral sweetness. Similarly to the Ecuador bar, the assortment of meadow flowers did feel somewhat awkward in terms of feel in the mouth, but that could be excused given their flavour contribution.

8.4 out of 10

Overall this was another fine collection that included two very different chocolates. When I opened the intricate packaging and saw the flowers lining the bottom of both bars I did somewhat fear that Zotter had finally given in to a gimmick and included them just to create a theme rather than them actually adding some to the taste department. Thankfully when it came to the actual taste test, it soon became evident that the flower bits included in both chocolates were there for more than just decoration. I have to say I wasn't all that partial to their bitty, rough contributions to the texture of both bar's melts, but both the rose flowers in the Ecudaor 60% and the meadow flowers (daisies, corn-flowers and marigolds) in the cashew bar brought vital flavour contributions that added nicely to the experience. I don't think I would like to see dried flower pieces added to all my chocolates going forward, but Zotter proved once again you can't rule out using any sort of ingredient to enhance the naturals flavours of chocolate. If you are intrigued this Labooko duo is certainly worth a look at.

What does the title mean?

Right now we have seen it all 'meadow flowers' lol. I thought it couldn't weirder from the olives the other day but this just takes the biscuit.

What has this guy been smoking? I'm surprised that both of them tasted so nice (especially the roses one(.

I don't think I'm brave enough to buy this out of choice but I would give it a try.

Omg you can see the bits of flower in the chocolate. I would have thought there was something seriously wrong with my chocolate if I had opened it up and seen that.

I think this would fall in the category of unique but probably not very nice. Thanks for another interesting read.

They do launch their range like a scatter gun don't they. Zotter seem like they make loads and loads of different flavours, throw them at the market and then see if they stick.

I bet this one doesn't catch on because people will just be too scared to try it.

At least I "get" the idea behind the wrapper today. It's funny that it is one of the simpler visuals on the packaging, yet it's probably the most outlandish flavour they make.

Christ boy you will eat anything wont you. You must have a cast iron stomach to be able to deal with something like this.

I wouldn't mind trying some of their almond chocolate but I think I would like it minus the flowers please. I wish I could find an actual shop that stocked these bars. I would love to try some of them.

Dx

These chocolates looks amazing, I've never seen anything like it at all.

Jim in your reviews you keep talking about a Mr Zotter - does one guy really come up with all these ideas on his own?

My perception was that Zotter were a massive company abroad.

Lmao I love the name 'Ein BlumstrauB'. Saying it out loud sounds really funny.

mmmm this sounds like my sort of thing.

The effect on the aftertaste was certainly pleasant, but the slight roughness it brought to the melt was less so.

The flowers don't sound like they add anything beneficial though.

Great review.

LOL just when I thought we couldn't get weirder than your olive chocolate review the other day you go and top it.

The way you have described hasn't made the flowers bit sound bad at all. I think Golden-Touch has said something really correct above - I understand it might taste nice but I don't think I would be brave enough in the first pace to try it. Perhaps I'm just a wimp.

You/they have outdone themselves with this one :-)

What gives you the motivation to try all these different chocolate types. I think I have a range of around 5 different chocolate bars that I eat.

You could say I'm unadventurous but its more the fact I know what I like.

I thought I should answer a couple of your questions

The name of this bar in the UK is Bouquet of Flowers.

Josef Zotter creates all of the flavours himself.

The Zotter Chocolate Factory is located on Josef's parents farm, in rural Austria.

If you want to know any more about Zotter look at www.zotterchocolate.co.uk.

Hope this helps

I would say this flavour is nuts but it would be more appropriate to say it was flowers hehe =>

Zotter need to get their act together and get their business over to the UK. We are all gagging for wacko things like this to try.

These sound intriguing! I'd certainly give then a try. It's a shame they couldnt implement the flowers ina way that didnt compromise the texture of the chocolate. Perhaops making the flowers softer somehow or just using the flavour. Either way they still sound interesting!

David said...

@Keith Do you think Jim has tried your best chocolate yet? Have you got anything weirder he can try lol lets poison him with something really foul :-)

What is your favourite?

Do you still make a curry flavour?

Sorry for all the questions. I think it is great that you are prepared to take the time to answer us.

Lauren said...

Oh my god did you really eat something that has flowers in it? Lol I think you might be going crackers Jim.

As much as I love variety with chocolate, this sounds a little bit too "out there" for me. Thinking back to the other Zotter reviews, I like the sound of the beer one better.

Jim how can you feature German chocolate on the site at a time like this :-)

You should be focusing on the best of Blighty ROFL.

Keith is tres cool for answering our questions directly. Its great to see a company care so much.

I've seen some weird reviews on here before but never anything made of flowers. I would ask what you have instore for us next but I don't want to even think about it it. Your're going to be hard pushed finding something weirder that's for sure.

Paul, We'd love to be more widely available in the UK but it's hard to persuade the retailers. Go and tell your favourite shops to contact us.

David, With such a wide range my favourites change from week to week.

Curry is not in the current range.

Nigel, Sorry to disappoint you but Zotter is Austrian not German and Austria rarely win anything at football

We're working on plans with a UK customer to offer the full range (that's 70 different hand-scooped varieties) online from August.Follow @MerchantEurope or @ZotterChocolate on twitter for more info.

Best wishes
Keith

@Keith - could you explain what "hand-scooped" actually means?

Emma said...

Great review Jim but I'm still unconvinced by the whole flowers thing lol.

I am with what Nigel says it's great to see someone from Zotter take the time to answer questions from us. I'm going to start asking some of my local shops tea shops if they would consider buying them.

I have a few questions of my own
1) What new flavours are you planning?
2) What is Josef Zotter proudest creation?
3) What inspires him to try all these odd flavours?
4) Why are the flavoured chocolates called handscooped bars?

Wow it's terrific to see that guy talk to us through here. I know Jim says companies read comments but I never thought they actually did.

Keith it's really impressive that you have taken the time to answer so many peoples questions. Can I quickly just as one of my own please?

What are the plans for the immediate future for Zotter? Are you planning on bringing out any new types of products? Do you think you will ever get top of Jim's leaderboard?

Sorry I realise now that is more than one question lol.

Thank you

Soph

Well it looks like my work has been done for me today :D

Thanks so much to Keith from Zotter for answering all the questions.

Chocolate Gifts - please don't post a link in your name to your site. It makes me thing you only posted to get your site some exposure.

All the people asking can they make any weirder flavours - I want to say no... but I think that would be tempting fate.

Golden / Estelle - I think you raise a good point. I think the majority of people wouldn't ever try these because the proposition is so out there.

Justin - I bet the majority of people eat only a few bars. I myself just like trying all different things. I wouldn't be able to run such a site if I didn't :D

Alan - It was slightly annoying that it spoilt the texture. If they had been softer I think that might have felt even weirder. Good to hear that you would give it a go.

Paul - I'm not to sure the UK market would be too receptive to this bar. I think its a bit too odd to be honest.

Lauren - You can hold off the men and white coats for a bit :D I'm not going crackers I swear.

Phil - some of the wesbites mentioned on the Zotter website carry that beer chocolate. If you really fancy it I would suggest you buy some sooner rather than later as stock could be low.

Nigel - Haha Zotter is Austrian chap.

Heather - I think you could be right. I will be hard pushed to find something odder than this.

Thanks again to Keith for taking the time to answer all the questions. I hope he pops by again to mop up the last few.

The rest of you might want to take a look at the site tomorrow .... THE HEAVENLY CAKES COMPETITION starts tomorrow!!!
