Thanks to the interest and requests expressed by ChocolateMission readers on my last review, the kind people at Galler (wesbite See HERE) have sent me along another batch of samples for me to work my way through. In that last Ballotin of Pralines post (See HERE), I was very complimentary of some of the white chocolate pieces within the selection, and many of you urged me to try review some of their filled white chocolate bars. In line with demand, Galler included this Noix de Coco offering and it came billed as 'white chocolate with a coconut filling'. On more than a few occasions I have mentioned that coconut is a massively under utilised ingredients nowadays. Manufacturers like Lindt have proven in the past that when it comes to pairing white chocolate and coconut together, the synergy created can be quite spectacular.
This bar came in a 70.0g form that was split in to four very hefty sized chunks. As I mentioned on my previous Piemontais review from this part of the Galler range, I loved the packaging. One of my family did comment that the yellow colour coded tab at the top made it look like a paint sample from a DIY store, but personally I think it is a nice way to differentiate the different varieties and I liked how the Galler branding was kept minimal in a very suave fashion. In terms of the chocolate, again the blocks were a little on the large side and I would have preferred the bar to be broken into smaller pieces. That minor gripe aside the blocks looked stunningly crafted and the little bits of coconut really stood out amongst the darker coloured filling.
Looking at the ingredients list the outer white chocolate was formed of just six ingredients, with the full cream milk powder and cocoa butter sitting just behind the lead constituent sugar. This clean looking ingredients list was translated nicely in the taste, with the white chocolate providing a crisp, creamy set of flavours as soon as it entered the mouth. The white chocolate melted at a just about the right melt in the mouth, and became increasingly louder in it's smooth, milky flavours as it did so. During the latter stages of the melt of the outer chocolate, a vanilla hint was detectable for a fleeting second, though it was quickly dominated by the utterly delicious flavours of the coconut centre. As the filling slowly warmed in the mouth, sweet hazelnut and cocoa flavours came to the party and quickly melted away leaving the rough pieces of dessicated coconut. When bit in to, the small specks of coconut delivered the most immense amount of creamy nut flavours, which lasted a great deal of time in the mouth for a long duration after consuming. What with the white chocolate and praline centre, the taste was pretty sweet so this wasn't a chocolate best consumed in large quantities. As an accompaniment for an after dinner coffee it has to be said this was nothing short of superb, I savoured all four blocks.
Overall this was another very fine chocolate from Galler who have no proven that they have expertise in all three milk, dark and white chocolate sectors. As good as the white chocolate exterior was, the really shining star for me with this product was the combination of the coconut and praline centre, which has to be said was totally amazing. The synergy created by the sweet hazelnut flavours and the crunchy dessicated coconut was very reminiscent of one of my favourite German chocolates the Romy Classic Cocos. The difference between these two bars was that this Galler Noix de Coco was coated in a delicious layer of white chocolate, which was a very fitting choice for the richer tasting nut filling. If you are a fan of white chocolate and coconuts then I can't see any reason why you wouldn't get a great deal of satisfaction from this offering. Given the standard of this bar I can't wait to try my next Galler chocolate!

You really rate their white chocolate don't you?
I still haven't ever seen any of Galler's products on sale before. I think I might have to buy some online, I'm getting sorely tempted.
Mmmmm coconut and white chocolate is a lovely combination.
I have never understood why there has never been a white chocolate bounty. I think it would be well successful.
Rxxx
Praline and coconut in the same filling? Sounds like a beautiful thing to me. Nice review.
galler are scoring almost/if not higher than Hotel chocolat. Who would you say is the better brand? I know that is a hard question but if you could only give one away as a present which would it be?
If this had been dark or milk chocolate rather than white it would of had appealed to me far more.
I don't dislike white chocolate at all but I always find that milk or dark chocolates have more flavour and are less sweet.
I really fancy this Jim. I have just got in to drinking coconut milk of all things. I can't get enough of the stuff, it's especially nice and refreshing in weather like we are having at the moment.
It's great to see that Galler are sending you more things Jim. I have been wanting to see what you make of some of their filled chocolates (Please review the pistachio one).
I'm not sure I would ever but this coconut flavour. I don't dislike it or anything but it isn't a favourite thing of mine either.
I just looked at the Galler site and I'm unsure as to whether £2.50 for each bar is excessive.
Had I not seen this review I wouldn't of even contemplated it. Your words of wisdom are making me think again though, it does sound pretty tasty lol.
I'm not sure about that filling it looks a bit grainy in your picture. I don't think I have ever come to terms with the texture of coconut. I don't like the way it is both soft and crunchy.
I hope you don't think I'm weird lol. I don't mind the flavours its just the texture of it.
Dx
Great review Jim thank you. I think I might buy some of these Galler bars for my sisters birthday. She loves white chocolate.
I had my first galler chocolates the other day and they were gorgeous. I bought a few of their pralines for myself and my partner. We thought they were some of the best chocolates we have ever had. That is saying quite something, we love our chocolates lol.
Are these chocolates made in Belgium or is the company just from there? So many companies cheekily pass off their chocolates as higher quality just because their company was founded in Belgium.
One of my family did comment that the yellow colour coded tab at the top made it look like a paint sample from a DIY store
Lol I knew it reminded me of something :) That did make me giggle.
I'm not to sure about the sound of this one. I like white chocolate and praline but I've never been that sure about coconut.
I happen to have a book about becoming an entrepreneur in Belgium and there is an interview in there with Monsieur Galler who talks about his experiences setting up the firm. He seems nice and apparently it was the bars which were the innovative part of his range! He really did start from nothing, and is indeed Belgian.
This sounds nice but I would have liked it to have been milk chocolate as opposed to the white.
One thing I have to say is that their chocolates always look really cool in your photos. They look so neatly made.
If this wasn't white chocolate this is a flavour i would be looking to try. Shame. I bet it would be exceptional with a coating of dark chocolate.
The best white chocolate I have ever tasted is the Ritter Sport one that has hazelnuts in it. I haven't ever tried one that is coconut flavoured.
I had my first wispa duo yesterday. I wish they had chosen something more exciting to make like a picnic duo.
Thanks for another brilliant review Jim. I'm yet to buy any Galler chocolates but I'm seriosuly starting to contemplate doing so for a few birthdays I have coming up.
I do like your posts about more common chocolates that I can buy easily but hearing about these fancier companies is also rather cool.
I'm still really put off by the price. 2.50 for a single bar sounds awfully excessive if you ask me. Thats near enough saying that this should be five times better than an average mars bar, which it clearly can't be.
This sounds lovely. I always like to see a white chocolate bar done well. I agree about coconut, it doesn't get used enough but it's so tasty! Although dessicated coconut can be a bit annoying, maybe that's why? I prefer the softer sweeter coconut like you get in Bounty bars.
This looks delicious. It's certainly one I would give a go.
@Richard you wouldn't buy it everyday though would you. I think a Mars bar and this Galler bar are completely different things altogether. You would never pay over two quid a day for a chocolate bar but for a special occasion it justifies the price by the sounds of it.
You should consider working for these guys jim you sure do a job promoting their products. I'm not disbelieving you are or anything, I can't comment on that because I have never tried it. It's just you go in to such detail describing how nice it tastes.

All the white chocolates I have tried from thus far have been awesome. There are more of them coming up on the site in the next few weeks so keep a look out.
Rachel
A white chocolate Bounty? I have never seen or heard of one of those before. It would be a great to see one made.
Anon
Indeed it was a grand idea pairing both of them together. I certainly approved of it anyway.
Golden
They are too similar but different brands if you get me. Comparing one with the other is very hard to be honest.
I would probably go with Hotel Chocolat most of the time because I think the slabs are more interesting visually.
Colin
I think a lot of people prefer milk or dark chocolate over white. You certainly wouldn't be alone.
Nigel
Coconut milk!? That is very random. I have started using it in cooking recently to make Thai Curries. If you like that sort of thing I would suggest you give it a go. Chilled coconut is indeed wonderful in weather like this.
Steven
Which pistachio one were you thinking of? If it is the white chocolate one you are going to be in luck.
Mark
I don't think the price is at all excessive myself. Like someone has handily pointed out - it's not as if you would pay it everyday would you. As a treat every now and them I think they are very fairly priced.
Daisy
Na thats not weird at all. I can understand not liking the grittyness ... it does feel a little unnatural with the smooth melting chocolate I will give you that.
John
If she likes white chocolate Galler are ccertainly worth a look at. Alteratively you could try Hotel Chocolat. They also make some stunning white chocolate.
Heather
Was it their ballontin of pralines by any chance? I reviewed they a while back. Some of the praline chocolates I had from their were some of the best I have ever had.
Anon #2
They are made in Belguim I believe. Trust me these aren't Belgian imitators.
Katie
The packaging looks class in my opinion. I get what my family meant about the paint colour code things but I think it is a good way to distinguish the flavours in the range.
Gareth
What book would that be chap? I woul ne interested in reading it. It would be so cool to learn how he went about setting up his company. If you could post me a link to it that would be awesome.
Duncan
You aren't the first to say that today chap. They also do alot of their bars in milk ad dark chocolate varieties so it's worth taking a look at the site.
Justin
See what I said to Duncan above ... well worth checking the site to see if they do a milk/dark variation.
Karen
The Wispa duo is a bit of a pathetic one isn't it. There was ample oppertunity for them to try something different. I agree about the Ritter Sport White Hazelnut it is pretty damn tasty.
Nick
Good to see you appreciate these type of reviews aswell. I try make it an even mix between premiuim and standard market offerings. Its a tough balance.
PART 2
Richard
Of course it isn't five times better than a Mars bar but that isn't the point is it. Say you wanted to treat yourself ... which woudl you go for? Say you wanted to treat a friend or a partner? Which would you buy them? A mars bar or this Galler bar????
If you say Mars bar I'm glad I don't know you haha.
Phil
We have been saying this for a long while now haven't we (coconut not being used enough!!).
One of the bars I am really annoyed about never reviewing is the Ritter Sport Cocos ... that had a coconut creme centre so would have avoided the gritty feel of the dessicated stuff.
Paul
I don't think £2.50 is even THAT premiuim when you consider the bars are 70.0g in size aswell. I think people are forgetting that.
Julie
I think that is a compliment!? I'm going to take it as one anyway :D
Thanks everyone - more Galler reviews coming very soon! Remember to get your Heavenly Cakes competition entries in.
