Rounding off my summer sesaon of Hotel Chocolat reviews this year, I bring you my thoughts and photos of their 'The H-Box Just Desserts' selection. Hotel Chocolat describe this box of chocolates as a 'heavenly collection of classic summer desserts - perfect for a touch of summer hedonism' .... riiiight!
This selection box comprised of 8 different varieties, which you can see in my top-down photograph above. What you will also notice is that some of the pieces were portioned three times, whilst others only once - it didn't make much sense to me either!? That aside the packaging and presentation was first class as ever. The outer box was bright and vibrant, which was in keeping with the summer theme, whilst the inner menu was accurate and described each of the chocolate accurately.
The chocolate pieces on the whole looked very well crafted - I hope my cross-sections do them justice. On that note lets get down to business ... same scale as usual from Terrible to Superb.

Eton Mess - Need I say anything more about this chocolate than what I have done already HERE? No probably not. Yet again it was a deliciously creamy, fruity chocolate that was bursting with genuine red berry flavours. It is probably Hotel Chocolat's finest individual chocolate that they make - for that reason I can excuse it for being the piece portioned three times. Superb.
Key Lime Pie - The lime fruit delivery wasn't quite as strong as some of the other fruit influences in the other chocolates, however it was still very flavoursome and the the combination of the crunchy base and creamy ganache topping was delightful texture wise. If the citrus flavours were dialled up a bit more this could be a really special chocolate. Good.
Summer Pudding - This piece looked beautiful when bitten in to, and it was very nice to see all the different wildberry bits amongst the inner cream filling. With the outer white chocolate being as thick as it was, the main stay of the taste was cream based, but as the filling melted on the tongue there were strong red fruit influences in the form of some very refreshing raspberry, strawberry and blueberry notes. Very Good.
Mango & Peach Cheesecake - If the Eton Mess chocolate is the best individual chocolate Hotel Chocolat do, then this piece seriously isn't far off. This was an absolutely delicious chocolate, which dealt out lashings of peach and cream flavours as soon as it was bit in to. The crunchy caramel base provided a delightful sweetness with its delicate crisp crunchiness, whilst the dried mango on top provided a fitting sweet fruity finish ... very, very good ... Superb even :D
Banana Creme Caramel - I have reviewed this piece in previous reviews, and my thoughts were very similar in regards to it's plus points and it's limitations. The milk chocolate and inner sticky toffee were nothing less than first class. The sticky toffee filling was especially delicious with its buttery, burnt sugar flavours. Unfortunately the strength of the banana influence still wasn't as strong as I desired it to be, which just stops it being in the same league as the likes of the Eton Mess. Very Good.
Orange Torte - This piece comprised of a classic combination, with orange hinted praline coated with a dark chocolate shell. As I was expecting the dark chocolate was fuller flavoured and richer than some of the white chocolates, and set the tone nicely for the sweeter innards which was similarly full of flavour. The praline filling was lacking in nutty flavours, however the grittier texture meant the orange flavours had greater longevity in the mouth, which made for a very refreshing finish. Very Good.

The Eton Mess is in a class of its own. It just looks and tastes so good.
I have only had the pleasure of eating one but I think it was one of the best chocolates I have ever had.
See this is what I meant yesterday about the Galler chocolates. Looking how much more appetising these looks today. The Galler chocolates just look a bit dull in comparison. Lol thanks for proving my point.
Rxxx
Key Lime pie is my favourite dessert EVER. I have to try one of them, I can't believe they made a chocolate based around it.
What a brilliant collection of different sorts of flavours.
You could be a bit buggered if you don't like fruity chocs but apart from that they sound pretty great.
I really fancy trying a few of those mango cheesecake they sound mega yum.
Great photographs today Jim. I can't stop looking at the cheesecake and eton mess. How the hell do they make them so delicately with those tiny little layers in?
Hotel Chocolat make me smile :)
Dx
It is a bit odd how their banana caramel isn't as good as their banana slab you reviewed. Oh well some of the others sound totally decadent.
The ones I like the look of are the cheesecake, summer pudding and orange torte. All of them sound awesome.
Why would they give you three Eton mess but only one of the chocolate brownie? I wouldn't be happy if I got that lol I would demand a refund, or ask for a replacement :-) do you think that would have worked :-)
Eton Mess = best chocolate ever. I could eat a whole box of them if they did it.
They should just do a box full of them. All my friends and I are obsessed with them.
Jim how can you say the selection wasn't wide enough. Look at the amount of different flavours you get? You have every summer pudding under the sun. You are really getting fussy :p
I really want to see what these are like. I love cocktails.
Key Lime pie is the best dessert ever. No one makes a proper one in this country though. Damn shame to hear they didn't make it strong enough. The Eton Mess chocolate sounds pretty rad though.
Perhaps I am mistaken but didn't the eton mess chocolate used to have bits of meringue in it? I swear it used to.
The only dessert I think they are missing off the top of my head is an ice cream or sorbet one.
Had they made something along those lines you would have said they covered all bases. Some of these look pretty special though. The cheesecake and Key lime are the ones that stand out from the rest to me, I will have to try them.
I bought the massive box of these, you know the full-sized big long box? ...And ate the whole thing in one night. Oops! My favourite was the summer pudding, it was so tangy and flavoursome. The eton mess was lovely too but didn't feel like it lived up to the hype you have created for it! I agree about the chocolate mousse though. It was nice but too similar to the brownie. It could have been replaced by... a trifle flavoured choc!! Mm, that I'd like to see.
How times have changed. I want to know what happened to the days when you used to get just plain chocolates. Chocolate coconuts were about as exotic as things got.
They should have put some of their marc du champagne truffles in here just to finish it off I think. I'm only saying that because I bought some of their pink champagne truffles last Christmas and my mum loved them. I think they needed more booze.
I also receievd the larger box of these as i was also confused why they put odd numbers in the box :s weird huh?.
I must say the Chocolate Brownie for me was supurb, very melt in your mouth.
My only dissapointment was that they didnt include a coconut selection :s for a summer selection that should have been very high on the list.
Nice review Jim, you got anymore of the HC summer range coming?
Matthew
This I did not expect to see. Hotel Chocolat defeated by Galler. I don't get how you scored the selection criteria so low. I think the variety is about spot on.
@Linz Agreed a trifle chocolate would have been great. A dash of rum in it wouldn't go a miss either.
These look really nice I have to say. The chocolate brownie seems an odd choice for a summer desert collection but it sounds lovely. I have had the eton mess only once before, in a sleekster box. It was nice but not sure what is so special about compared to other chocs lol. I'm sure it had meringue in too, seems theyve taken it out? I was pleased to see an absence of alcohol, HC really don't do it very well, with the odd exception I'm sure. I'm not a fan of alcoholic chocs either, although Gordon Ramsays Champagne Truffles are very nice.
I think they look nice, but I think the Galler ones actually look more handmade even if they look less snazzy. That really appeals to me -they remind mne alot of the Chocolateque ones :)
How delectable does the Eton Mess look. I don't think there is any other chocolate that looks quite so elegant.
@Marshall you might want to try the Key Lime pie that GU puddings make. They probably aren't up to the standard you are used to but I happen to think they are pretty good.
You have to stop reviewing such posh chocs lol. My credit card is going to be maxed out at the rate you are throwing these expensive and delicious looking chocolates out there.
I would stick hot needles in my eyes for some eton or brownie truffles.
I can't see why there is all this fuss about the Eton truffle. I guess it is because I don't particularly like white chocolate, it is the torte and brownie ones that appeal to me the most.
Thanks for the great review Jim. Nice pictures again today, you can really see right inside them.
They should have just made it New York cheesecake. I hate mango :(
Karen I think you are right. Jim didn't mention anything about their being meringue in this review, but he did when he wrote about them last year I remember it. I think Hotel Chocolat might have taken that bit out :( what a shame.
You will be glad to heat that I shan't be complaining about the price of these today :)
I like it that you can buy these in all different sizes so you can 'try before you buy'. You can get a small version for £5, this one for £11 and the bigger one for £18. It is a sensible way to do it unlike the Galler box yesterday that just came in a set size.
The Summer Pudding and Mango Cheesecake really take my fancy, aswell as Eton Mess of course. Maybe they should have put another cheesecake flavour in instead of the chocolate mousse. I guess every box of chocolates has a dud though.
Take out the banana choc and we have a deal. I do love the sound of a cheesecake themed one.
I'm with Paul here.
I'm not so crazy about white chocolate (even though I know this last month was quite full of enjoyable Lindt white stuff)... but I have a weakness for chocolate brownies. And chocolate+orange combinations. And even that last piece (Chocolate Mousse) seems pretty interesting to me. But I see there's just one of each in the box - what a pity...
And while the Key Lime Pie sounds like a must have to this citrus-loving girl and the Eton Mess and the Summer Pudding look intriguing enough (I would certainly have one of each, even if it's just curiosity), the Mango Cheesecake and the Banana Creme Caramel are not for me. And there's 2+2=4 of them.
So, in the end, I'd have half the box. The three ones which only appear once, both Key Lime Pie chocolates :D one Eton Mess and one Summer Pudding. 7 chocolates out of 14.

I'm so sick of reading about how amazing hotel chocolate are. It is about time I bought some of my own. Any suggestions what best to start out with?
Are you going to be posting anymore reviews for Hotel Chocolat soon? If so what chocolates?????
"summer hedonism"?? haha they're so wierd. Eccentricity and wit. That is the key!
I'd probably only ever gift this to someone, rather than purchase for personal consumption. The fly in the ointment for me is all the citrus involvement. I'd rather go to the shop and get my own pack of just eton mess to get all gluttonous with. But halt! Where be the meringue? In all its crispy wonderment? Troubling times.
Super-pretty piccys today!
PART 1
Nick
As I said it is one of my favourite truffles ever to. You can buy packs of six from Hotel Chocolat shops I'm aware.
Rachel
They are beautifully crafted aren't they. They always look very exciting and exactly like they do on the menu.
David
The best Key Lime I remember having is from this small Italian resturant my family used to go to in Florida - random but true :D
Kaite
Indeed, on the flip side if you like fruity chocolates you are really sorted :D Perhaps not a collection for those that aren't though.
Daisy
I have no idea how they make them, or whether they are even handcrafted. The mind boggles as to how they make all those intricate layers.
Golden
Most of them are pretty special but yeah the Eton and the mango cheesecake were the ones that stood out to me. The summer pudding one hasn't got enough credit I don't think.
Paul
Haha I don't think they would accept that. I have no idea why, but I think it is deliberate that they are portioned like that.
Kim
I don't think you would be alone in that. You can buy them in batches of six from Hotel Chocolat shops I believe.
Estelle
The selection was wide in terms of choice but not particularly in type if you get me. All of them were very similar fruity chocolates.
Ana has kindly point you in the way of my Summer cocktails review :D
Marshall
You should try that GU one that has been suggested to you to see if it is any good. Let us know if you do.
Karen
Now you mention it you are right. I totally forgot about that ... I can't even remember if these ones did or not to be honest. I wrote this review a good month or so ago :S Has anyone else noticed the disappearance of the meringue bits in the bottom?
Duncan
Indeed an Stracciatella type chocolate would have been really welcome. Perhaps this is something they can think of adding next year.
Linz
Haha don't worry I am sure it could be easily done eating the whole box. I'm sorry the Eton Mess didn't live up to expectations. A trifle chocolate would have been a good idea ... just as long as it has Custard and Rum in it though! Thinking back to last year they actually did those raspberry and custard puddles. They weren't great to be honest.
Gman
Haha that is a good point. I bet you never used to get chocolates as creative as this. I think manufacturers are having to think more outside the box now.
PART 2
Tricky
Their champagne truddles are very good aren't they. They are a favourite within my family anyway.
Matthew
It would have been nice to have a coconut based one wouldn't it. Perhaps they will do something with coconut in next years summer desserts box.
You will be please to hear (I hope!) that I have another batch of samples being shipped out next week I believe. Look for some more reviews starting in a few weeks.
Nicholas
They were hardly defeated haha. As I said above the selection score was only average because I think they could have had a few more different types of truffle in there. Alot of them were quite similar.
Alan
Indeed it was nice to see them stay away from the booze for once.
I have no idea whether the meringue was in them this time ... I just can't remember :S It doesn't look like it from the pictures.
Personally I think these are a totally different proposition to the Galler chocolates. Like you say the Galler ones are more specialised handmade chocolates, whilst they are more mainstream. Both are as good as each other.
Diane
Delectable seems to be peoples word of the day today! I will use it in more of my reviews :D It does look very good doesn't it.
David
Good suggestion - I have never tried it myself.
Lauren
Sorry Lauren! Please don't stick hot needles in your eyes though :D You could just save up for a little bit instead haha.
Justin
Thanks for the nice words about the pictures. My old man took them again - he does a great job huh!?
Anon
Personally I loved the mango bit. I guess the plainer New York cheesecake might have appealed to more people though.
Nick
It is a real mystery isn't it!? I hope someone else who has had these Eton Truffles can pipe in soon as to whether the meringue bits were in their truffles.
Richard
Haha that is good to hear. Hotel Chocolat do a great job of making sure their range is accesible to everyone.
The different sizes make their products perfect for gifting.
Phil
You have picked out the best three in my opinion :D I agree with what you guys are all saying about the chocolate Mousse and Brownie truffles - they just seem a little out of place in the grand scheme of all the others don't they. You are right - every box has its weaker pieces.
Mysterio
Haha you really don't like banana do you :D
Ana
Seven out of fourteen isn't a great amount is it!? Perhaps if you were to buy them you could give the rest away :D Some of the ones you don't fancy are brilliant chocolates ... you would make a lot of friends that way :D
Thanks for finding that link for Estelle. You saved me hunting around.
Anon #2
Blimey what a question - err I would just check out all my reviews under the Hotel Chocolat tab and sift through them seeing what takes your fancy. There are so many it would be hard to suggest a single product.
Gamer
Indeed - more reivews will be up in the coming weeks.
Lottie
Last but not least ... slow coach :P
These would make a nice gift wouldn't they. Sometimes gifting chocolates can be a bit boring, but the different flavours in these would certainly get a few 'oooohs' and 'aaaahs'.
Are you able to answer the meringue thing? Last time you had some of the Etons was it in there?
Thanks for the nice words about the pics. My old man will be loving that.
Thanks for the comments today people - I heard from Hotel Chocolat earlier today and they said they are sending along some more samples. Busy, busy times!
