Kcal 150 Fat 5.0g Fat(sats) 3.0g Carbs 24.0gWhen I looked back through the ChocolateMission archive looking for my last M&M's review it came to my surprise that it's nearly been a whole year since I last wrote about the brand (See HERE). In previous years we have all come to expect several limited edition movie themed tie-ins (See Strawberried Peanut Butter, Pirate Pearls etc), but 2010 has been relatively sparse for new M&M's flavours. Well M&M's fans fear not, as Mars have finally launched these Pretzel flavoured M&M's and they were kind enough to send me a few sample bags all the way from the US. On the pack they came described as 'chocolate candy coated pretzels', and boasted about their 'less than 30% fat content'. I have to admit I was pretty startled when I looked at the nutritional information - it was remarkably low for such a product.
These M&M's Pretzels came in a 32.3g bag that contained around 20 or so M&M's pieces. Packaging and presentation wise this was your bog standard M&M's variant. It was slightly disappointing to see Mars use the same blue coloured background as their 'Crispy' variant, but it looked relatively cool nonetheless and the Pretzel theme was communicated relatively effectively. The M&M's themselves were middling in size in that they were smaller than Peanut M&M's, yet twice the size as the standard milk chocolate ones. Again it was somewhat odd to see that these only came in four different colours (blue, orange, brown and green) but this didn't bother me all that much. M&M's have never been the strongest smelling candies, but these Pretzel ones did emanate some minor biscuity scents.
As anyone who has ever tried M&M's before will be aware, the standard of the milk chocolate isn't the greatest, though they always manage to deliver a relatively sound chocolate flavour hit. The sweet sugary flavours of the milk chocolate were again forthcoming and quickly established as soon as the thin candy coatings were breached. Just as the outer shells were, the pretzel centres were equally as crunchy, and the savoury wheat and flour flavours soon surged over that of the chocolate. To be honest at this point these M&M's felt more 'cookie centered' as opposed to 'pretzel centered', but towards the latter stages of chewing my first mouthful I noticed the intermittent salt hints come to the party. These salty flavour bursts made for a nicely contrasting taste that featured both sweet and salt influences. The salty element to the taste made these especially moreish, and it took no time at all for me to finish the single serve bag. The entriety of one bag delivered a a degree of satisfaction, but like I have found with previous M&M's flavours, these weren't the most satisfying of snacks ever and I could have easily eaten more.
Overall as a big fan of pretzels I was really looking forward to trying these, so I'm glad to report that Mars did a pretty decent job. As you may have noticed from my copious reviews of chocolates that have salty enhancing flavours (think Reese's, caramels etc) I'm a real fan of products that have sweet and salt flavour combinations, and these have to go down as another that do it pretty well. The quality of the milk chocolate was again far from sparkling, but lets be honest none of us would expect anything different from the M&M's brand. I guess what was most important with these was how well the inner pretzel constituents was executed, and reality was that they did it pretty well. Perhaps this is me being greedy (or me me being a genius more like!), but wouldn't it be great to see some M&M's Peanut Butter Pretzels!? I think that would be a fantastic synergy of two products that they already make, and it would probably make these Pretzel M&M's all that much better. I would be very interested to hear what my American readers think of these - please share your thoughts.

Man I haven't had M&Ms for ages. The only time I really have them is when I go to the cinema but there are so many different pouches you can buy there now they are always a bit of an after thought.
These sound really cool I love pretzels. Are they exclusive to the US or are we going to get them here?
Rxxx
Why did they use the same packaging as the crispy ones? I doubt I would even notice them if they were on the shelves. I would just think they were the crispy flavour.
Thanks for the review Jim. I want to try these now.
I'd spotted these on a few of the american review sites. If you look at places like crybercandy they have them in stock but they cost over £1 for just a small bag which I think is way too much. I refuse to pay that much.
Lol why did they only make them in four colours? I thought the whole point about M+Ms is that they come in all sorts of colours.
This is a silly question, but with orange ones do they taste of orange like Smarties do? I think I'm going to have to buy myself a bag of normal ones later to test this out.
Dx
I used to eat MMs by the lorry load but not really any more I don't know why. The only time I ever see them is in those big bags, I never see the smaller ones around in the shops.
Lol did you hear about Heskey retiring Jim. It is a sad sad day NOT LOL.
I'm surprised by the lacking calories and fat in these. Even the originals are quite a bit higher on that front.
I don't particularly like pretzels that much but I would be willing to give these a try if I ever saw them.
The only M&M thing I have consistently ever bought is mcvities brownie they used to make.
The canteen at my school stopped buying them now so I haven't had one for ages. I wish I could find somewhere else that stocks them now.
Steven is right they sound brilliant but no way am I going to pay the stupid prices that I would have to pay to try them. I was in cybercandy in London the other week and they had normal chocolate flavoured M&M's for sale at £1.70 for a small bag. It's ridiculous.
Are these replacing the crispy flavour in America? You would assume so given the the wrapper looks exactly the same.
I know we get pretzels here in GB but don't you think it's odd that they are really big in America but not so much here. When I went to the US last I had a freshly made big one. It was sooooooo nice I can see why they like them so much.
Jim this review has reminded me I meant to tell you about this MM chocolate bar I found the other day.
I meant to take a picture of it before I ate it but I sorta forgot lol.
It was bassically just a flat chocolate bar with mini mm's in it. It was amazing but it was cool trying it.
This is encroaching on my dragons den idea for chocolate flavoured crisps. I know it sounds a bit mad but seriously try it. Try eating a Kit Kat along with a bag of salted crisps, it tastes well good. I'm going to be rich I'm telling you now :)
In previous years we have all come to expect several limited edition movie themed tie-ins (See Strawberried Peanut Butter, Pirate Pearls etc)
You forgot the Shrek ones which were tied in with the original peanut butters.
To be honest at this point these M&M's felt more 'cookie centered' as opposed to 'pretzel centered', but towards the latter stages of chewing my first mouthful I noticed the intermittent salt hints come to the part
Lol they should make cookie flavoured ones.
I would be very interested to hear what my American readers think of these - please share your thoughts
Do you not value the opinions of your British readers then Jim ;)
Lol I've never liked M&M's that much. I have always thought that the chocolate tastes really bad. I can't deal with the peanut ones because they don't have much chocolate in, but give me Smarties anyday of the week please.
I love M&Ms. I never knew they did white chocolate ones. They must have been well good.
Its one thing after another looking at this site.
Nearly everyday my reactions go from 'cool this looks brilliant I would like to try it' to 'oh bother they don't sell this in the UK'. Its getting really annoying :/
I've never been a big fan of M&M's, always found them boring. The chocolate in them seems quite tasteless.
It's interesting that in America they like combinations of salty and sweet, I used to think it didn't work but now I love it. Peanut butter pretzel M&M's sounds good :)
I've never liked M&M's or pretzels so I wouldnt be atall bothered about these! My sister likes the Crispy ones for some reason, they taste just as horrible IMO lol. Ive also always preferred Smarties although even those arent as good as they used to be.
Did you know that Smarties actually had a coffee flavoured one aswell as the orange? I think it was dark brown apparently but was dropped at a future date due to consumer demand. Also Walkers also released chocolate flavoured crisps at one point didn't they? they were horrible! :P
Peanut butter MMs are my favourite type but I never get to have them very often.
If I could have my way they would take away those vile milk chocolate ones and replace them with the PBs.
I think we can safely assume these will never make it across the pond lol. I can't even remember the last time that Mars bothered doing something with the M&M's brand in this country.
They just don't even bother with it nowadays.
I just had a bag of pretzels but they weren't chocolate flavoured. These did remind me of those flipz pretzels you used to be able to get. Does anyone remember them?
Man they were so good. The white chocolate ones were so amazing.
Steven/Paul you can find then a lot cheaper than that if you look in the right places. I wont post the links without Jim's permission but if it allows it I will happily show you where.
Yummy I love pretzels. I'm going to have to ask my friend in American to send me some. Jim where do you hear about all these chocolates they have out in America? Do you have spys or something lol.
These have replaced the crispy M&Ms in the US. We haven't had crispy M&Ms for years now (and I do miss them).
I like the pretzel M&Ms, they aren't as sweet or decadent as the other varieties, but for a "lighter" option they are very satisfying.
Wow it's the first time ever that I think we can say we have something and the Americans don't :)
It's so ridiculous how Mars manage MMs in the UK. They are treated like an ugly duckling almost.
PART 1
Nick
There are loads of different bags of chocolates available now. Pretty much every brand under the sun has a bagged alternative now don't they.
Rachel
At the moment they are only availible in the US. I doubt they will ever make it over here.
Mark
They probably used the same one because they are replacing the crispy ones. That is what Rod says anyway.
Steven
They are mega expensive in the shops over here aren't they. If someone knows of a cheap place to get them from please feel free to share.
Daisy
I have no idea why they only chose those four? Its a bit weird I agree.
orange M&M's don't taste orangey like Smarties do no.
Nigel
Heskey retiring!? Probably best I don't give an opinion on that haha. You are right it's not that common to see the smaller bags around anymore. I see the big ones often enough mind.
Golden
They are one of the lighter chocolates snacks aren't they. You don't like pretzels, yet you want to try them!? haha that doesn't make much sense.
Tom
Funny that I saw one of those M&M brownies just the other day in my local OneStop shop. Probably best you just look elsewhere if your school has stopped selling them.
Paul
£1.70 for a small bag! Haha that is mental! Last time I saw a normal bag of chocolate ones they were priced at like 45p!? It would be interesting to know how much these cost in the States.
Lauren
It sounds like already have replaced them. Its hardly like pretzels are unpopular in this country, it is more that they are really, really like them in the States.
Ben
I have reviewed that bar actually.

Darren
You're going to take that idea to the dragons den :D haha I hope your product development isn't that far down the line. I can't see the idea catching on myself. Walkers tried it with their chilli and chocolate crisps and they weren't that nice.
Katie
I didn't forget them ... I put an 'etc' on the end :D
A cookie flavoured variety is probably in the pipeline for one day. I wouldn't bet against it.
Of course I value the opinions of my Brit readers! I just assumed that my US readers would be more likely to be able to offer their opinions on these.
PART 2
Duncan
The chocolate you get in M&M's isnt great I have to admit.
Mysterio
They weren't that great I'm afraid to report. They were made over 6 years ago now! It was ages ago.
Colin
Sorry chap, it probably has been like that for the last few days. Remember what I said to you all yesterday ... nothing is impossible to buy on the internet if you look hard enough.
Phil
As I just wrote the chocolate isn't great I do admit.
Even though the chocolate isn't great I would suggest you try the peanut butter ones if you get the chance ... they are pretty darn good.
I should have copyrighted the idea of peanut butter pretzel M&M's! I bet we see them one day.
Alan
You really are a fountain of knowledge when it comes to these things? What decade were these coffee smarties about then? I never recall them being like that.
It's probably best you never try these if you don't like M&Ms or pretzels :D I can't imagine you would think that much of them.
Christian
If you look on ebay or the candy importer sites you can usually find them reasonably priced. Best have a look there.
Paul
You're right they should try make more of it here in the UK. I can't remember the last time they brought out a new flavour in this country. It's criminal we don't get the PB ones.
Alex
I do remember them indeed. I used to like the white fudge flipz aswell. They still make them in America, I have a review of one of their new flavours coming up pretty soon.
Emma
Please feel free ... I have no qualms with that sort of thing at all.
Kim
I just keep an eye on some of the american candy sites like www.candyblog.net, GigiReviews, ImpulsiveBuy etc... they are great for keeping track of the latest stuff going down in the States.
Rodzilla
Wow I never knew these were replacing the crispy. I wonder if they will stop producing the crispy ones in this country?? To be fair I don't often see them nowadays anyway.
Thanks for the comments today everyone! The competition results are being posted tomorrow! Good luck to everyone that entered.
JIM
Haha well neither do I - it was many decades before our time! It was back in the 1950's when Smarties were first produced! lol
Now you mention it I'm sure I have had the peanut butter M&M's in the past Jim, I think I may have got them off cybercandy. I had totally forgotten about it.
I have to say that I don't like them as much as the Almond ones, but when I couldn't find the Almond ones yesterday I bought the Pretzel ones. They're a better "snack" than "candy" I think.
Ever since Flipz were reviewed I have been dying to try chocolate + pretzels...until I saw the commercial for these M&Ms, the candy and the pretzel were animated and complaining about the merger and it honestly put me off trying them again lol...although if they included peanut butter I would have bought them already...Mars, are you listening?!
I was just in the US and now I'm back in Australia. I'm craving pretzel MMs and all we have are crispy MMs with some sort of rice crisp in the middle. Gimme the Pretzel please MMs!!
If anyone lives in Scotland, you can get these from Jenners at Loch Lomond shores! Along with a whole other bunch of American chocolate/candy/food!
Lucy
