Kcal 544 Fat 34.3g Fat(sats) 16.1g Carbs 51.6g (per 100.0g)After the last few weeks it wouldn't seem right to go without a Galler (Website - See HERE) review, and I haven't let you guys down. In my last two Galler features I reviewed a few of their white chocolate bars - the Noix de Coco and the Manon, with both scoring in the region of 8.0 on the ChocolateMission rating system. Over the past few days I decided to mix things up a little, and got stuck into this Amandes offering. The Galler Amandes came described on the wrapper as 'milk chocolate with an almond filling'. To be more precise this bar was formed of an outer shell of chocolate, encasing a dual marzipan and almond filling.
As with all the other Galler filled bars this came in a 70.0g serving size that was split into four large sized blocks. There isn't much I can say about the packaging that I haven't said in previous reviews; it again did a grand job of communicating the prestigious nature of the brand and the gold foil wrapping similarly maintained a good sense of luxury. As you will see from my photo above the blocks were very intricately crafted, with three different layers providing an interesting aesthetic proposition. When cut in to a minor set of nut scents washed over my senses, though I have to say I was more preoccupied looking at how the generously the fillings appeared to be be portioned.
Over all my Galler reviews I think we have all managed to grasp the fact that they make some outstanding chocolate. The 30% cocoa recipe used in this bar again provided a delightful flavour base for each and every mouthful, and the chocolate melted at a nice rate and longing soft smoothness. As the well paced melt developed the sweet, creamy cocoa volume became increasingly louder, up until the flavours plateaued in to a pleasant end note of vanilla. This was of course only the start of the flavour experience, as the praline and marzipan elements were next to the party. Out of the two the praline was first to establish itself, and it brought an interesting set of buttery, salted almond suggestions. Whilst this praline layer was nothing other than delicious and wonderfully progressive in terms of contribution to the total experience, it disappointingly hampered the flavour delivery of the marzipan. Unfortunately the marzipan layer tasted somewhat flavourless in comparison, and resultingly just felt like an awkward dry crumbly substance amongst the melted chocolate and praline. Although this wasn't the richest chocolate ever, like so many Galler products that have gone before it was certainly best consumed in small quantities.
Overall as good as both the milk chocolate and the almond praline were, this bar has been inhibited from scoring as highly as it should of have done because of it's ineffectual marzipan layer. In terms of quality I can't imagine me ever having to question Galler about any of their milk, dark or white chocolates - having tasted all of them quite extensively now I am quickly learning that the produce some delightfully fresh tasting chocolates that are as good as anything I have tasted from the like of Hotel Chocolat etc. Similarly the almond praline that accompanied the milk chocolate exterior was also superb, with it's forthcoming nut flavours providing a deliciously salty nut taste. Unfortunately though I couldn't help but feel a little let down by the marzipan - Niederegger quality it was not! If I was to get gifted a bar of this, I would feel more than happy to eat it again. Put in the context of some of Galler's other offerings though, I would personally say they have more to offer elsewhere.

So they aren't invincible then? I think this is your lowest score for Galler so far right? I would rather try some of their milk chocolate over their white but I wouldn't want the marzipan.
It sounds like they over complicated things and should have just had either a praline bit in the centre or just a marzipan bit. Do they do just a plain praline milk chocolate? Your review yesterday has got praline on my brain lol.
Rxxx
God dammit Jim do you think we are made of money? Lol you keep reviewing so many expensive things like Hotel Chocolat and Galler, it would cost hundreds of pounds to keep up with you. Loved the review again though boy, you do a great job of describing the taste for us.
Thanks for the advice. I will make sure I don't go for their marzipan chocolates when I finally take the plunge and buy something from them. It's a bit odd how their chocolate is strong tasting (by the sound of it), but their marzipan is bland. Ho hum.
Lol if you compare the photograph of todays chocolate vs the yesterdays Hotel Chocolat they look no different apart for the obvious bit of marzipan. The praline looks the same colour and the chocolate looks exactly the same thickness. One could easily pass as being made by the other don't you think.
I would of thought that their milk chocolate would of had more cocoa solids. 30% sounds low for a company that charges a premium price. Thats nearly at cadbury and galaxy levels of cocoa.
The only thing putting me off these galler bars are the size of the chunks. I can't determine how big they are from your pictures relatively but over 17 grams each sounds excessively big. Smaller blocks Ftw.
By the way Jim I take back my comments about the wrapper the other day. I thought they were going to all look to similar but I think it is because you posted two samey looking ones in a row.
I think they look pretty cool now. Very high in sophistication.
Did you ever find out what manon meant? Amandes?
Hell yeah you already reviewed something I put on your shopping list :-) did you do that on purpose or just coincidence? Please take a look at some of the other I asked you to. The Cafe Noir is one I am most interested in.
ps - Holland to win today. They will be too much for Uruguay
Was it a case of the marzipan being weak in flavour/inadequately portioned or was it more the case that the praline was just strong?
It could be worth just trying the praline on it's own if it's more the case of it being strong. You seemed to enjoy the box of pralines so you would have to like a whole bar of it .
Stop mucking about Jim just review some of their flavoured dark chocolates. We know you all like dark chocolate better - I just want to see what kind of ratings you are going to give them.
At least they managed to make the pack look different to your last two. I like the small touch of the branded logos on the top of each one, it shows nice attention to detail. It sounds stupid but I don't think they would look half as class without them.
All these galler and hotel chocolate things sounds tasty but I still don't think I would buy them if I was spending big money on chocolates. I think I would just plump for a brand that I know rather than one I didn't. I don't think the average person has heard of either galler or hotel chocolat so in a round about way something like thorntons might looks better as a present.
I just looked at some of your other marzipan reviews and you rated Milka marzipan as better tasting (you gave it eight out of ten and this only seven). One has to cost way more than the other. Would you seriously say the milka one tastes better?
Can I make a suggestion please? Feel free to bat this away but do you think you could add some price information where you put the calories and stuff. Speaking for myself I would find that really interesting.
Marzipan is quite hard to get right I think. If it's a small layer of it I'm not surprised the other flavours cancel it out. Still the rest of it sounds lovely. I agree with Alex about the logos on top of the chunks, they really make it look special.
I had the Lindt almond the other week and that was very tasy, loved the salty almond taste.
@Tricky I think Jim has said before that he wouldn't do that because prices vary from all different places you can buy things. I would say we don't need exact prices but ballpark figures would do.
I wouldn't class myself as someone who likes marzipan chocolates so I wouldn't be fussed about trying this to be honest. It's interesting seeing all the different flavours galler makes though because I have no idea what they do or dont make. Are you reviewing anymore soon?
I think this would have worked without the marzipan lol. It's an interesting combo though, at least they gave it a go, rather like Zotter lol. It's cool to see these differnt companies creating such interesting chocs :)
The chunk size doesnt bother me atall, the chances are i'd just be eating the bar in one go anyway, but if not it wouldn't bother me.
The only bar whose chunks bother me now are Yorkies. I read that Nestle changed the mould - they originally had 6 squares and looked like a slightly chunkier version of a single serve bar of DM, each with a letter on spelling Yorkie. I rememeber them like that (when Yorkies tasted better!) but the last couple of years theyve been those wierd Toblerone-esque chunks which you have to break off if you want any teeth left- with only 5 Chunks!! they now just have Y on them I think! Poor Yorkie - decline in looks, size and in taste! :P
Thanks for the review Jim it was insightful as normal. Can I suggest that you review some of their plain dark chocolate bars please. It would be brilliant to get an understanding if these guys are truley as good as hotel chocolat.
@Mysterio I would feel similarly if I was buying chocolates for someone else and would probably buy a bigger well known brand. For myself though I'm not fussed. If Jim says its good he is usually right. I have no qualms about spending more on brands that I haven't heard of it they come with a thumbs up from Jim.
I don't like marzipan that much but I did try a bit of a niedreger bar that my brother bought they other day. It was pretty nice but im still not convinced that marzipan is all that great. I can see why people who like that sort of thing say niedreger is the best though.
Anything but marzipan please. Do they do any fruity chocolates? That is something I haven't seen you do for Galler yet. Do they have a chocolate orange bar you could review? Its my favourite combination of flavouring for chocolate.

Hi All,
My contact at Galler Marion has been looking over your comments and wanted me to post the following in response to some of your questions ...
All the names are in French as Galler is a Belgian company, however we have
translated all the names into English on the website.
Unfortunately this does not apply to Manon or Cafe Liegeois because they
don't translate literally - Manon is a traditional Belgian chocolate and
Cafe Liegois:
" Beloved of the cafes and restaurants of Liege, the "cafe liegeois" is the
ultimate coffee treat - topped with cream to compliment the intensity of the
coffee. Our filled bar balances a light, natural coffee-flavoured mousse
with a dark chocolate shell. Unique to Galler, this is a must for those who
enjoy a fine mocha."
... I hope that clears some of that up for you. Marion also said she would be sending me across some of the bars you have suggested. If you have any requests be sure to make a note of them on the review so she knows what you want to see.
David
No chocolate maker is invinceible we all know that chap. I happen to think just as much of Gallers white chocolate as I do their milk. Both are fantastic in quality.
Rachel
They certainly do just have a plain praline bar. I will make a point of trying to review it.
Paul
Sorry chap. A few people have mentioned this now I should take notice of it. I hope you guys don't mind too much because I have a lot more Hotel Chocolat and Galler reviews on the way in the coming weeks. Hopefully Im just being helpful letting you know what is worth forking out for and what isnt.
Mark
The quality of the marzipan wasn't great if I'm totally honest. It wasn't horrendus by any means but I have certainly tried better.
Duncan
I see what you mean they do look a bit the same. It probably helps that I was using the same camera. The Galler chocolates do photograph well don't they.
Anon #1
The quality of the cocoa is also something you have to bear in mind. I'm willing to bet that Galler is far more expensive/lucrative beans than those mass produced companies do.
John
I wouldn't let you put that off. I too prefer smaller chunks but these big ones are easy enough to break into smaller bitesized pieces.
Anon #2
See above matey boy - leave your name next time please.
Nigel
I would loved to say I did it especially but it was just by chance Im afraid. Marion seems to have taken quite a bit of notice of your 'shopping list' though. If there are any within that you especially want to see get done please say.
Steven
More the marzipan being weakily flavoured. The praline was delicious but dominated it a bit.
Part 2
Colin
I'm hardly mucking about chap. I'm just making sure I do a proper job. Dark chocolate reviews to follow don't worry.
Alex
I think that was more just an unfortunate case of me posting two similar looking wrappers in a row to be totally honest.
Mysterio
I get what you are saying there. I think Galler have a job to do making sure that their brand becomes just as well known as some of the other brands you mentioned. The quality of their chocolate gives real hope that they will be able to do that I think.
Richard
I've had so many different marzipan bars I lost track. To get a score of 8.5 for taste it must have been pretty good. Remember that the scores are given relative to the price ... that is how I factor that in.
Tricky / Paul
Thanks for the recommendation. For the moment I'm not going to do this as the prices will vary by country let alone retailers within that country. It would take a hell of a lot of research which is something I can't commit to I'm afraid.
Phil
The Galler branding on top of the block does make it look that much better doesn't it. I take it the Lindt Almond you are talking about is the new Excellence one right!? Im glad you liked it, I thought similarly myself if you remember.
Lauren
I have one more review coming up next week. Then it is up to Marion and I to discuss what comes up after that. If you have any suggestions please let me know.
Alan
It was a unique combination wasn't it - I can't think of any other like it myself.
I've never been the greatest fan of Yorkies myself so I can't comment how the brand has changed over time. I never saw the point of the Yorkie myself, I was always just one to pick Cadbury Dairy Milk ... Cadbury Caramel to be exact.
It's interesting to hear that though. Has it changed since I reviewed it a few years ago!?
Justin
Certainly. If you want to be more specific about what I should review please say. I'm going to be sorting it out with Marion soon.
Estelle
Again I just think this is a case of Galler building up their brand equity. The quality of their products should help them do this with consumers. They just need to step up generating awareness.
Katie
Niederegger is in a class of it's own in my opinion. I hated marzipan before I tried that stuff. It can't be beaten in my opinion.
Alicia
I will have to take a look at their range. I'm not a total expert on it. If you see anything on their site you like the look of please drop me a note.
Thanks for the feedback today everyone. As you will have seen Galler really take notice of your views so it is really worth adding your thoughts.
JIM
I always liked Yorkie's as a bar (in the same way it's nice to have a galaxy instead of DM from time to time etc) although I didn't have them all that often. But of course it was originally Rowntrees so I think the chocolate was better. I've never been one to just go for one bar, I just mix it up lol. It wouldn't surprise me if the quality had deteriorated in the last couple of years - just like Milkybar! lol.
I think it's worth thinking that in the past most of the rival brands say to Cadburys were of probably much better quality when they were alls separate companies (mackintosh, nestle, rowntrees etc)and would all have had distinctive qualities. Now they are all Nestle's I think some of the quality has disintergrated. :( They still make many great bars, but I think they were probably once better.
I always enjoy reading reviews of any type of bar, although not being in Europe it's not as if I can get most of them anyway :) and I do really like to see reader's requests reviewed.
Btw I recently tried a few bars that were reviewed way back in 2008, and posted my comments on the relevant pages, but they haven't shown up, could that be maybe because the reviews the form linked to are too old? Or maybe they were just caught in the spam trap?
Alan
Indeed Im sure if we asked people their thoughts on how bars taste now compared to how they did in years before they might say that some of Nestles products have got worse.
On the contrary one product that I think might have even got better is the Kit Kat. They have done some really great things with it in the past ten years (launching chunkys etc!). It was only recently with the caramel ones that the wheels fell off a bit.
Thea
They got chaught up in the spam trap unfortunately. I did read them so don't worry about that (your talking about the comments on the Neapolitan Wafer Ritter bar etc yeh!?)
Apologies they didn't publish - I really appreciated hearing from you though. The spam filters have been in over drive the last few weeks though.
It seems to get worse as the site gets more hits.
Thanks both of you.
JIM
