August 21st/22nd: 'Bits n Bobs' - Millionaire's Shortbread

'7Days of Chocolate Reviews' has been replaced this week by a special 'Bits n Bobs' post that I compiled after receiving an e-mail from keen ChocolateMission reader Lauren. A few weeks ago Lauren got in contact asking me if I had any advice on what brand of Millionaire's Shortbreads would be best to take a long to a tea party she was going to that weekend. Of course I suggested that she visit Heavenly Cakes, who I think make the best Millionaire Shortbread ever (See HERE). Lauren however was on a more pressing deadline and needed to buy them that day (DOH!). At this point I had to admit to Lauren I was a bit useless - I could suggest the very decent Thorntons Millionaire's, but to be honest I didn't have any idea about any of the supermarket offerings she mentioned in her e-mail ... I needed to do some research!

Although way to late to assist Lauren, with the help of my work chums, over the last few weeks I have been trying out various Millionaire Shortbreads that are available to us in our supermarkets here in the UK. I will keep the reviews short and sweet, suffice to say none of them were as good as Heavenly Cakes Millionaire's, but please feel free to add your own thoughts below.

Kcal 180 Fat 10.0g Fat(sats) 6.2g Carbs 21.0g (per slice)
Price - £0.79
'Shortcake topped with caramel and a chocolate flavoured coating'

I found these in Sainsbury's and I bought as I could hazily remember them being recommended to me by a ChocolateMission reader previously. Out of all four products on show today these were certainly the most unique in terms manufacture, price and subsequent taste. Unlike the rest of the Millionaire's this was produced by one of the UK's most famous cake brands, dear old 'Mr Kipling', so it was a bit of a surprise to see it was the cheapest out of all four. These things aside the main diversities from the Supermarket offerings came in the taste. Although it had a crisp outer portion, the base was cake like and soft instead of a hard biscuit. This didn't bother me at all, and I thought it delivered some fine syrup sponge flavours. On top of that sponger layer, the caramel was more like dry fudge rather than being soft and gooey. Similarly this wasn't a problem for me and I enjoyed it nevertheless. What was of great disappointment to me however was the chocolate coating, which had very little cut through in the overall taste and was certainly the poorest of all four on show today.

Kcal 290 Fat 13.5g Fat(sats) 9.0g Carbs 26.2g
Price - £0.80p
'Belgian chocolate caramel shortbread'

I bought this in a single serve portion so I wasn't able to get any second opinions. Saying that I'm still pretty confident in my conclusion that this was the best of the lot - it was certainly the one I enjoyed the most anyway! The plastic wrapper and cardboard sleeve weren't perhaps the best looking packaging ever, but I certainly liked the look of the slice out of the packet and I appreciated the decorative bits of white chocolate placed on top. Starting with the biscuit base I felt the shortbread here was the most accomplished. It was crunchy, yet firm and had a delicious butter led taste taste that had all the desired flavours inputs from the hits of brown sugar and salt - wonderful! The caramel on top was similarly nice and firm in texture and did a nice job fusing all three layers. I felt the caramel and chocolate layers weren't the most accomplished in taste, however the caramel avoided being overly sugary and the chocolate did deliver the chocolate flavour hit to a decent standard.

Kcal 170 Fat 8.1g Fat(sats) 5.0g Carbs 14.2g (per square)
Price - £1.59
'Shortbread topped with caramel and milk chocolate, hand drizzled with white chocolate'

I have to admit that the packaging had me believing these were going to be the best out of the bunch and they nearly, nearly were. Out of all three I felt the chocolate layer of these squares was the most accomplished and I enjoyed it's creamy cocoa flavours and crispness at which it broke when bitten in to. Unfortunately I felt the other caramel and biscuit portions weren't as accomplished as the Sainsbury's offering, as both were just a touch shadier in both taste and texture. Taste wise the caramel was more startling in it's sugary flavours, whilst the shortbread was less buttery and blander in comparison. One thing that was especially noted by some of my work colleagues was that the biscuit bases were terribly soft and crumbly, and the softer, gooey texture of the caramel portion whilst looking nice, wasn't all that practical when it came to eating. If quantity and quality of chocolate are the most important things to you, then these are worth a look at.

Kcal 205 Fat 10.3g Fat(sats) 6.2g Carbs 17.3g (per slice)
Price - £2.19
'Shortbread squares topped caramel and dark Belgian chocolate'

Save the best until last!? Unfortunately not - quite the opposite I'm afraid. Aesthetically these slices looked pretty decent, with the caramel layer looking very plentiful in it's portioning sandwiched between the caramel and chocolate. Speaking of the chocolate, I thought the 'dark chocolate' proposition might be a clever ploy by Waitrose to balance the sweetness of the caramel. Indeed the sweetness was taken out of chocolate, but it was unfortunately not replaced by any grander focus on cocoa or cream so it came off as being just rather bland. The caramel layer took the lead role in the taste with it's fine buttery sweet flavours, but the biscuit bases were just as disappointing as the chocolate. Personally I would say Waitrose billing the bases as shortbread is verging on lieing - they tasted more like blander McVitie's digestive biscuits and were soft and unsubstantial once in the mouth. Unlike the others I wouldn't be prepared to buy these again.

Mmmmh millionaire's shortbread... yum yum yum :D

I should try making some, I wonder if that would be better than bought ones? Hmmm...

haha the reader you hazily remember recomending the Mr Kipling ones was me, so thank you :) Or rather I was curious about what they were like, I think I have had them once but was a while ago.

I've had the Sainsburys one more recently and thought it was quite nice. I think theyre a very hard thing to get right Caramel/millionaire shortbreads, I almost certainly prefer the ones with a proper shortbread base rather than the cheekier digestive one.

I've not tried the other two as I never shop in Tesco or have a waitrose nearby but it doesnt look as if I'm missing all that much lol

Woah great review Jim those are some amazingly tempting photographs.

The only one I have tried out of these four are the Mr Kipling ones. You gotta love Mr Kipling, he makes exceedingly good cakes you know :)

Awesome post Jim I love millionaire shortbread. Have you ever tried the MS from Greggs? It probably wouldn't beat heavenly cakes but I rate it highly myself. I fancy trying the tesco ones looking at your pics.

This is such a cruel review lol. I don't think I am going to be able to resist buying some shortbread when I hit town later on.

I have the choice of sainsburys, marks and spencer and a few local bakeries. I think I might try some out from my locals. I will post some pictures if your lucky.

The Mr Kipling ones will be the most artificial and full of preservatives and god awful stuff. I'm surprised to see you rate them higher than some of the fresher made cakes.

That sainsbury's one is pretty I have had it before. They also do this delicious brownie slice in that same kind of wrap which can also recommend. Cool post Jim, you must fancy yourself as a cake expert now lol.

Is it me or do the Mr Kipling cakes look different to what they show on the packet? It always really annoys me when companies do that. The caramel looks a lot thicker than it is in Jim's pic below it. Thats cheeky I think.

Mmmmmmmmm I might be totally biased (cause I work there!!!) but I think the Tesco ones are the best.
On one of my lunch breaks recently I bought a pack of five and ate them all in one go lol. I felt a little ill afterwards but it was so worth it. They are so yummy.

You missed out Asda and Morrisons lol.

none of them were as good as Heavenly Cakes Millionaire's

After buying all four that must have been a little annoying to find :-)

I'm only joking with you. I loved this post.

Sorry Jim but I have to dispute your findings ..... the best millionaire shortbreads are the ones my mum makes lol. Trust me they are the stickiest, most chocolatey things you will ever taste. I will think of a way of sending you some if you are keen?

Have you ever reviewed the millionaires you can buy in Marks and Spencers? They look very similar in style to the Tesco ones you have featured here, it would be an interesting comparison to see if they match up

On a related note I bought some Toblerone cookies from Tesco the other day. Seriously Jim they are amazing you need to do a review asap.

I'm not dissing your write ups bit your photos say a thousand words lol. I would have put money on the Sainsburys or tesco ones being your favourites. They look the nicest in your photos.

It's no suprise to see that Waitrose are the most expensive. Even though you get six if you work if out pence by cake they are still the dearest out of them all.

I fancy trying the Mr Kipling ones myself. I've never seen them around.

Millionaire shortbread is delicious but I wish more people would make it the way it should be made and put dark chocolate on top. I used to make them a lot in my food tech classes because it was so simple. The times it came out best were always when I put a dark chocolate on top. The time I experimented with white chocolate was terrible. They were so so sickly.

I don't buy cakes often but when I do I always buy shortbread. I'm not always keen on buying millionaire shortbread because it can be so sweet but my kids love it so I sometimes do. If you plan on buying any more can I request you review the ones from the co-op. They are also fairtrade you know ;)

Epic reviews Jim EPIC. I'm gonna buy one of those Sainsburys ones asap and conduct my own research. Your site is the best.

Lol I feel like I'm calorie consuming just looking at these reviews. I like the look and sound of the Tesco ones best personally. I always prefer caramel to be gooey rather that stodgy. I thought you would have said that aswell given that you love Cadbury Caramel.

Alan said...

@ Annonymous - I dont think the Mr Kipling ones will be any worse than the others, probably better actually since they say they dont use anything artifical etc. You'd be surprised to find how many 'fresh baked' products you buy are full of preservatives and artifial this that and the other, the labelling laws are much less stringent for fresh goods!

To be honest it wouldnt bother me all that much if they tasted nice. Its a theory of mine that many things dont taste as good as they used to because theyve been 'naturalfied' (smarties, wine gums to name two lol)!

Phil said...

I'm surprised at the Mr Kipling one, as "chocolate flavoured coating" basically means fake chocolate. I don't like the look or sound of it at all. I'm surprised at Waitrose too, I thought they were meant to be a posh supermarket so you'd expect better quality there.
The best branded ones I've ever had are still Thorntons. I tried some Lidl ones once and they were nasty, too greasy and fatty tasting.

At the end of the day the best of all are homemade ones. I haven't made any in ages, because I usually end up scoffing too much and feeling ill, lol. I'd agree with what Daisy said about white chocolate - I tried that a few times and although it did taste nice, it was just too much with everything else.

Resph said...

Lol the few times I have tried making millionaire shortbreads have been total disasters. I'm never patient enough when it comes to letting the caramel and chocolate bits set. Mine always end up horrendously crumbly and fall to bits.

The photos are amazing today Jim. You should warn us when you exhibiting such food porn.

Epic failure Waitrose. I would have thought they were going to be the best. I always think of quality when I think of them. Delia wont be happy LOL :-)

Alan said...

It's interesting to note the Sainsbury's one is just part of their standard on the go snack range whereas the Tesco ones you reviwed were their 'Finest' range ones, and I imagine thats what the Waitrose equivalent is aswell?

I wonder what the Sainsburys Taste The Diffrence ones are like and conversely the Tesco and Waitrose standard offerings! Theres been quite a few times when I bought both varieties of something and actually preferred the standard cheaper offering lol

I love millionaire shortbread of all kinds. It would be impossible for me to rate these.

Gabby said...

Can you please do a similar thing for brownies? That would be awesome.

Tesco make some really nice ones but so do Marks. If you ever get to review the chocolate sponge cakes that come in the tubs that M&S make that would also be brill to see. Lol I hope you own a gym pass.

This site needs to carry it's own health warning :) I feel fat just looking at all of these shortbreads.

I know strictly speaking they aren't millionaire shortbread but I tried the Cadburys caramel biscuits for the first time at a kids party yesterday and I thought they were well nice. I think I will buy myself some next time I see them.

EVERYONE

Thanks for the positive responses to these reviews. I'm glad the majority of you seem to enjoy it. Thanks for all the nice words about the photographs etc - here are my responses to some of your questions/comments.

Claudia - Home made things always taste better because they tend to be a) fresher and b) made with your very own efforts :D

Alan - I thought it might have been you that suggested them. I wasn't 100% sure when I was writing the post though. I take your point about the Sainsbury's one not being from their premium line ... what with all the other requests it looks like there may have to be a part II one day :D

David - I don't ever go to Greggs so I can't say I have tried their millionaires. I will add it to the requests.

Steven - I'm not an expert in any field matey. I do like my millionaires though.

Mark - They do look a little different but I can't say it fussed me whatsoever.

Katie - You want to see Asda & Mozzas do we? I never go to either of them but if I ever do I will be sure to give them a try.

Golden - If I start taking home made cakes off my readers then I would forever been stacked with food I couldn't possibly eat. For this reason I will have to turn it down I'm afraid.

Robert - I have done chap. I have reviewed the same style one to the Sainsbury's one I reviewed here. Take a look under the M&S tag you should find it pretty easily. Toblerone cookies sound nice. I haven't ever seen them but if I do I will give them a try.

Daisy - I can't imagine whitte chocolate working for millionaires the sugar levels would go through the roof wouldn't they.

Linda - Blimey the requests are flying in. If I ever see the co-op ones I will give them a try.

Alicia - Nah for Millionaires I prefer the caramel to be thicker in texture so it binds both the chocolate and the biscuit together.

Phil - Thanks for the heads up on the Lidl ones :D I will avoid them. I can understand that homemade ones taste the bed. Like I said to someone above, half the thing about homemade stuff is the effort you put in to making it. It just feels good knowing you've made it yourself.

Karen - I love that phrase food porn. It's graphic but it makes the point :D

Gabby - I will consider doing something like this for brownies. I don't eat them often though so I will have to do some research beforehand. I know of those chocolate cake tubs you are talking about. I will also give them a try if I ever get the chance.

I have some good posts coming up this week everyone. Please be sure to swing by the site when you can.

JIM
