Kcal 586 Fat 38.8g Fat(sats) 22.9g Carbs 51.8g (per 100.0g)It has been quite a while since I last reviewed anything from Germany's Moser Roth brand, but thanks to ChocolateMission reader Alan I today got the chance to try another offering from their range. For those that haven't come across Moser Roth before, it is a brand of chocolates produced in Germany specifically for Aldi stores. What with Aldi being much bigger and widespread in Germany, Moser Roth is obviously a lot more renowned in it's homeland, though their bars can also be found in most of their chains located here in the UK. As I don't live anywhere near an Aldi my chances to review Moser Roth chocolates are generally rather limited, but like I said thanks to Alan this Moser Roth Mousse au Lait Coffee made it's way in to my hands last week. Described as 'milk chocolate with a lightly whipped coffee mousse filling' it sounded like the sort of bar that was my kind of thing - I was hoping for a Milka Amavel Mousse au Cappucino type experience.
This Mousse au Lait Coffee came in the same format as the Mousse au Lait Noisette that I tried earlier this year in the form a 187.5g package containing five separate 37.5g bars. As I did with the hazelnut variant I thought the packaging was extremely well styled and very premium looking considering the price it retails for. Having now seen two different variants from the range I think there is scope for Moser Roth to have dialled up the flavour varieties a little more in the on pack visuals and branding. That is probably me being ultra fussy - the product was superbly presented and I was still loving the idea of breaking the package down in to the five smaller bars.
Over the course of a working week I slipped one of the individual bars in to my work bag each day for me to eat alongside my afternoon 'pick me up' coffee. When removing the bars from their paper sleeves I didn't at any point get a strong sense of aromas, however when searched for they did offer some fine smelling sweet chocolatey scents which offered just a few hints of coffee. In regards to taste my experience with this Mousse au Lait Coffee was not to dissimilar to the Noisette bar I had tried from this range before. The outer milk chocolate wasn't particularly strong, or distinct in terms of the flavours it offered, but the grounding of sweet, milk rooted cocoa was pleasant and did a job providing the chocolate flavour hit for each bite. At the middle of each block the mousse delivered on it's promise of having a whipped, light texture and had a pleasant mouthfeel compared to the thicker melting milk chocolate. The mousse filling added a degree of additional creaminess to the taste, however I (inevitably) found the coffee element a little lacking and didn't quite feel like I got the coffee flavour experience I wanted from the sweet mocha like taste. The 37.5g serving size was sensible portion size for a snack but the slightly non-committal taste meant I didn't find it the most fulfilling of chocolates ever.
Overall this bar ticked many boxes when it came to the scoring chart, coupling some fantastic presentation with a fairly decent tasting product. I found the chocolate to be of a decent quality given the price, though the usual Moser Roth limitations were evident once again here, with the chocolate lacking uniqueness and a flavour impression to really call it's own. Whilst the chocolate wasn't exactly distinct, it still did it's job and the mousse filling certainly didn't let itself down when it came to providing interest texture wise. My loyal readership will be aware that I like my coffee chocolates flavoured strongly, so I doubt it will surprise none of them that I have highlighted this bar as being a little weak for my liking. Although this Mousse au Lait Coffee may not have been tailored to my specific tastes, it is certainly worth bearing in mind for fans of bars like Ritter Sport's Cappuccino as I would say this bar offers a similar sort of proposition. As is always the story with Moser Roth they never produce outstanding chocolates, but this was yet another competent offering that is worth taking a look at.

Lol the coffee chocolate reviews return then :) That didn't take long Jim.
I'm still yet to see or hear of Moser Roth in the wild yet so I can't pass any any judgement on how good/bad they are.
Nice review Jim. If Moser Roth is as cheap as you say it is they don't half make their chocolates look way more expensive than they need to.
They look well class I think.
I'm not interested in the coffee bit but it if this was just a normal mousse chocolate I would definitely be up for trying it.
A lot of what Moser Roth do just reminds me of Lindt. I haven't tried them side by side before but it would be an interesting comparison to do one day.
Thanks
Rxxx
Thats a yummy looking chocolate. The centre bit looks just like it does on the package.
I'm not at all surprised to see that Moser Roth would make a chocolate like this one. All of the German chocolate producers seem a little obsessed making chocolates with mousse centres at the moment. We've seen you do ones from Lindt, ritter and milka already. This looks a pretty average one.
Is Aldi really the only place you can buy Moser Roth?
If so that is really annoying because I don't have one close by :( Booooo.
Thanks for the review Jim. Coffee chocolates don't usually interest me but I would still give this a try if offered by someone else.
I just saw your review of the Noisette one (your link is broken btw).
That one looks way more my kind of thing.
At the middle of each block the mousse delivered on it's promise of having a whipped, light texture and had a pleasant mouthfeel compared to the thicker melting milk chocolate. The mousse filling added a degree of additional creaminess to the taste, however I (inevitably) found the coffee element a little lacking and didn't quite feel like I got the coffee flavour experience I wanted from the sweet mocha like taste
That might not be up your street but that sounds just about perfect to me lol.
I hate strong coffee chocs but I can deal with mild ones. I think I would like this better than a harsher coffee centred one.
I've only ever seen the most basic of Moser Roth bars whenever I've looked for them in my Aldi shop.
They haven't ever stocked any of these mousse based bars thats for sure. I would love to give them a try if I could.
Mmmmm yum these one looks very yummy. If they did a minty mousse version you could colour me very interested but because it's coffee I'm less so.
Are you going to be reviewing any more moser chocs? I don't see them around at all but I like seeing your reviews of them. It means I'm well prepared for when I finally do lol.
Trust you to sneak in a coffee chocolate Jim it must have been a few weeks since your last one lol ;)
I think Moser Roth is amazingly good for the price. Just out of interest how much did you pay for this one? Normally I see their bars between £1 and £1.50. Any more and you might as well just buy Lindt lol.
This chocolate looks cool but it isn't one I think I would buy. I don't like coffee at the best of times so I wouldn't ever choose to have it in my chocolate.
It's last day of the transfer deals Jim can you see Man Utd buying anyone?
A childhood of disgusting coffee cream chocolates has made me totally unappreciate anything type of coffee chocolate so I don't think this one would ever be one for me to enjoy.
Thanks for the review though Jim. Hopefully tomorrow you will have something I fancy more :)
This is another 'try but not buy' one for me. I wouldn't ever buy it but I would be willing to give it a go.
I like the idea that the coffee isn't all that strong. I can't stand chocolates where it tastes bitter. Thanks for the review.
Dx
Nice one Jim great review. Another flavour from this range you might want to try is the dark chocolate and chilli one. Like the coffee obviously was in this one, the chilli in the mousse bit is very subtle but I think it works really well.
If you want me to send you one I will happily do so. My local aldi stocks a full range of Moser Roth.
I always think that mousse chocolates always looks better than they taste lol. This one looks really nice but from what jim says it wasn't very strong in flavour. I always want things to taste as good as they look, I hate being disappointed by chocolate :(
Jim this is one the lower rated coffee chocolates you have scored recently. Wasn't it any good?
Yay, lol glad it survived the post and you thought it ok :) I thought you might find it a bit weak but its great for anyone who likes cappuccino style flavours I think.
Rachel, they do a vanilla mousse one, Jim reviwed it not so long ago :)
Unfortnately Aldi is the only place you can buy them, as its their own brand, its a pity really because for the price theyre really good. the normal bars are £1, the mousse bars a bit more, but certainly no more than an average Lindt bar.
Theres a couple of other bars left, inc 85% dark which you might like?
I like the way they have already split the lot in to smaller portion sized bars. I would find those really handy for work as it would save having to carry around the whole thing all the time.
I would be well keen to see some more reviews from this type if you have any? I hope you aren't put off by this one.
If you asked me to name one flavour of chocolate that was my all time worst I would say coffee without thinking. I hate anything coffee flavoured so I wouldn't touch this one with a barge pole.
I am reasonably impressed by some of these Moser Roth chocolates mind you. You describe them as if they are really cheap or something - they look anything but if you ask me.
it's a shame hearing that you can only buy these from Aldi because I would really like to give some of these MR bars a try.
I always find Lindt chocolates a bit on the strong side so these milder chocs might be more my kind of thing. If any one does hear of any other places that sell them please can you let us know.
Michael is Jim's review not extensive enough to give you his thoughts :) It seems to me like he didn't find anything wrong with it at all but it just wasn't as good as some other close alternatives he has reviewed recently.
It's not a chocolate that appeals to me in the slightest but I would like to try some of the other Moser Roth chocolates soon.
I really rate just the plain milk chocolate that Moser Roth make. It isn't anything speical but I used it for some cookies I made a few weeks ago and everyone was asking me if I used any special sort of chocolate.
I can't imagine a review of it would be very interesting but I thought you might want to know.
Dammit that is a lot of chocolate for £1.
I think I have to get involved with this Moser Roth chocolate it looks fair cop.

Indeed. It wasn't my own choice reviewing this one. As I said in the review I got sent it by Alan. I've banned myself from coffee chocolates for a while because of the complaints.
David
I think it's great they put so much effort in to the way they present their products. Thumb up from me for the way they conduct themselves in this regard.
Rachel
They do a nutty mousse one (noisette) plus a few others you might want to try.
Comparing a similar Lindt bar side by side might something I will consider doing in the future. Good idea.
Anon
It's always a nice thing to see when the chocolate looks like it does on the wrapper.
Steven
I like all the mousse centered chocolates myself. It's always nice to have the variation in the textures I think personally. I've yet to come across a bad one.
Nick
I believe so Nick. It's frustrating for myself as well because I don't have one near me either.
Duncan
If you prefer nuts to coffee flvoured chocolates then that would be a reasonably assumption to make :D You never know 100% until you try these things mind you.
Katie
Well if you like the milder coffee chocolates then this would would certainly have potential for you. Not for me :D Espresso strength all the way.
Ben
I have no clue about Aldi stores but aren't they pretty random as to what they stock and when? It's probably worth just keeping a watch on what they have every couple of weeks.
Andrew
Mint mousse? I think Milka do something along the lines of that but I'm struggling to think of another alternative. I like the idea!
I do have one more Moser Roth bar thanks to Alan which is due up in the next few weeks. Sit tight chap :D
Kim
Oi :P It has been at least two weeks since the last coffee chocolate I will have you know.
Alan has kindly answered your question about the price below.
Nigel
Fair enough - horses for courses and all that.
No chance of United buying anyone today. We don't have the finances or the need to buy any players.
Rosa
Hopefully I will indeed. I can't remember what is being posted tomorrow but one thing is for certain it isn't coffee flavoured :D
Daisy
Your another who doesn't like the strong coffee flavoured bars then. If you like them weaker then this would be the way forward. If your just unfussed about the whole flavour though it probably isn't worth the effort.

I did have that bar in my review pile but I unfortunately didn't get around to tasting before it went past it's best before date. I'm now a bit wiser to that sort of thing - I wont be making a habit of it.
Anon
I agree it can be disappointing when things looks better than they taste. Generally when a manufacture puts the effort in to making something look nice it generally turns out tasting pretty decent also. It's not that common I find otherwise.
Michael
Haha - did you not read the review chap? It wasn't bad or anything, just not as good as some of the other alternatives I have tried over the last few months.
Alan
I'm always open to trying anything you know me :D
Thanks so much again for sending this bar along Alan you are way too generous for your own good. They survived perfectly in the post despite Royal Mail seemingly playing football with the outer parcel (it turned out scratched and all sorts!) Not to worry the chocolates looked fresh as a daisy!
I have the mint one coming up in the next few weeks.
Kevin
They are really convenient for carrying around small, nicely sized portions. Moser Roth have struck upon something there with their packaging. I can't think of another brand that does anything that similar with bigger chocolate blocks.
I haven't been put off at all. It wasn't bad or anything.
Adrian
Haha we all have our flavours that we really don't like so your aren't alone there.
Paul
Sounds to me like Moser Roth could be a brand you would really like. Take a look on their website or the internet!? You might be able to find someone selling them on ebay or something?
Linda
I don't think Michael must have read my review :D
Let me know if you try any of the Moser Roth range. I'm always really pleased to hear second opinions from my readership.
Katherine
Like I sat all the time Katherine sometimes the simpler chocolates are the best :D
It sounds like you are a cooking maestro :D fancy sending along some cookies for us all ;)
Simon
I think like Alan said these mousse ones are a little more expensive. Still though one pound a bar isn't to be sniffed it. The value for money is terrific.
Thanks everyone. Apologies about the coffee chocolate thing again - I hope I haven't bored you to death by them.
JIM
haha i didnt realise there was such a backlash against coffee chocs! :P you havent reviewed THAT many in a row ;) Ahh well.
I'll send you the last couple of normal bars along next time I'm in Aldi if you like :) I'm always curious about the stronger dark chocolate bars! lol. I too like the wrappers, theyre very convenient wrapped liked that, and it keeps the rest fresh.
Great review Jim but I think I prefer the idea of the dark chocolate and milk mousse bar more (mousse au chocolat classic).
I could do without the coffee if I'm honest.
Have they stopped making the mint one? Can't get it anymore!
