September 17th: GU Brownies

Kcal 178 Fat 10.7g Fat(sats) 5.7g Carbs 20.0g (per brownie)

After receiving dozens of reader requests asking me to look at GU's desserts range I finally decided to oblige, and I today bring you my review of these GU Brownies. I found these brownies in the unusual location of the fresh desserts chiller cabinet during my weekly shopping trip to Sainsbury's. I don't know if GU have come to some corporate arrangement with Sainsbury's, but the entire contents of these shelves were dominated by GU products apart from the Sainsbury's own brand fresh cakes - before anyone asks I'm pretty sure these can also be bought in the likes of Tesco etc. On the box these came described as 'chocolate brownies made with 50% cocoa chocolate and pecan nuts'.

I'm not altogether sure of the weight of the box, but inside there were 8 individually wrapped brownies. In terms of price, I have to admit that the £4 I payed for these did seem pretty hefty at the time - suffice to say it noticeably added a fair wedge on my final store receipt. Presentation wise I was altogether pretty impressed. The dome shaped box was no doubt a pain in the backside to photograph :D , but I thought it looked cool nonetheless and it was very easy to store in my fridge. The brownies themselves also looked appetising on the eye, though I wasn't particularly impressed by the aromas that were released from their plastic packets. The chocolate cake smells on offer weren't at all unappealing (far from it!), but I was expecting them to be far stronger for products that were supposedly 'fresh'.

What with these brownies being 'freshly made' they had a relatively short 'best before' date of one week, so I took these into work to share with my ever grateful work colleagues. To make sure we had all bases covered we of course tried these brownies in a number of different ways - straight from the fridge, heated, and lastly, and most indulgently, with some Ben & Jerry's vanilla ice cream. Despite trying them all these different ways the experience they delivered was pretty similar each time, and there were obvious positives and negatives. Speaking about the good stuff first, these brownies were more than adequately satisfying and they established a rich chocolate experience from the very first bite. The taste was laden with unsweetened cocoa flavours that built with every chew, and additionally there were minor nutty offerings from the pecans. Moving on to the not so positive feedback from some of my colleagues, they felt that the brownies were a little one dimensional with their dense, viscous texture. A lot of them remarked that good brownies have crisp, light outer portions and then soft gooey centres - these were simply just slabs of dense brownie cake. A more personal gripe of my own was that the pecans could have been better implemented had they been larger in size. I think the flavour impact would have greater had they been bigger, and they would have brought a crunchy element to the one dimensional texture problem. Out of all these methods the situation where these brownies shone were when they were heated with the ice cream - believe me this made for one devilishly rich dessert.

Overall these were some very tasty brownies but there are some glaring areas where I think they could be fractionally improved. One thing that I can have no complaints about whatsoever was the quality of the dark chocolate used, it was exceedingly rich tasting and flavoursome for just a 50% cocoa recipe. People who suffer from nut allergies obviously wont agree with me here, but the pecan nuts were also a fantastic inclusion, though as I mentioned above they could have been even more genius had they been larger in size and not chopped so finely. It may sound like I am being overly critical here but you have to remember I am always comparing these to the truly superb Heavenly Cakes Milk Chocolate Brownie which I once described as "the best plain brownie I think I have ever had the delight of eating". If we put Heavenly Cakes aside for just being in a class of their own, these GU Brownies are at least worth taking a look at if brownies are your thing. They are a little expensive and by no means perfect, but they are still some very tasty cakes indeed - more GU cakes coming soon.

Yay I have been wanting you to review some GU for ages thanks for getting it done Jim.

These are one of the things I have been looking at trying but I haven't bought them yet. Perhaps I might this weekend.

Great review Jim that photo is way too nice to be looking at this time in the morning lol.

These sound nice but I would want the nuts in them. I would prefer just a plain brownie but thats just me. Thanks for the review.

Nick said...

These are pretty steep for what you get huh. Jim on the balance of things would you say they are worth it? I know you like heavenly cakes but these are the cheaper out of the two. I'm not sure from your review whether you think it was just worth paying a little bit extra for the heavenly ones.

Omg these look sensational. If you are thinking of trying more of the GU stuff I would try the melt in the middle puddings, trust me they are the richest chocolate dessert you will ever eat.

Im not to sure about buying these if im honest. Brownies are pretty ten a penny aren't they. Anyone can make a half decent brownie if they put some effort into it.

Great review Jim. I tried the tiffin version of these and I thought they were sensational. If you ever get the opportunity to try them I would do so. The problem is they are well expensive, you got to be careful about how long they stay in date aswell. That wasn't something I looked at when I bought my tiffins and they went off in like 3 days :(

Amazing picture of that brownie. I want to eat my screen lol.

Since when did you become some sort of cake expert then Jim? I aint complaining but I thought this was supposed to be a chocolate website?

I hate GU stuff. Over expensive if you ask me.

I'm loving this review today Jim. It is my turn to bring some chocolates in to college next week for my mates birthday so I think I might buy a pack of these.

I hope everyone appreciates them lol. Are you looking forward to the game at the weekend? I am pretty fearful of what the score might be. If it was at Anfield I would fancy our chances but not at Old Toilet lol ;)

This is very weird I was thinking of baking some brownies today lol. I feel like I needn't bother now, I could just buy some of these and save the effort :) Lol no I think I will make some. Buying cakes from the supermarket isnt a bad thing but I think you cant beat homemade cakes. Brownies piping hot out the oven mmmmm you cant beat that smell.

Thanks for reviewing these GU Jim I know I had been pestering you to do so. Those Heavenly cakes brownies must be something really special if they can outscore these like they did. When I tried these brownies I thought they were amazing, probably the best brownies I have ever had.

Im even more intrigued at heavenly now. Any word on when they are coming to stores?

Yummy brownie photo. I wish they wouldn't of put nuts in them though. I cant have these now :( Its so annoying when manufacturers put nuts in things for no reason.

I knew I shouldn't have looked at this site today. This is not a good site to be looking at if you are a girl on a diet lol. You wrote a lovely review Jim I can almost taste these brownies. When I have reached my goal weight I might contemplate rewarding myself with some of these. Thanks for the review ..... kind of lol.

"good brownies have crisp, light outer portions and then soft gooey centres" - I agree with that! :D That's why the melt in the middle puddings Francesca is talking about sound more tempting to me (I suppose these are the ones?) :)

The box looks beautiful though.

The best way to eat brownies are to heat them and then have cold whipped cream with them. I cant believe you say you put them in the fridge. You would never get the best out of them by doing that.

Andrew said...

This will sound really sad of me but the best brownie I have had in recent memory was one I bought from the bakery in Tesco.

If you ever get the chance to try one of their brownies make sure you do, I don't think you will regret it one little bit. They are loads cheapers than these were as well ;)

Must resist. I had a big slice of chocolate cake yesterday, it would be way too naughty of me to buy some of these today.

One thing that I can have no complaints about whatsoever was the quality of the dark chocolate used, it was exceedingly rich tasting and flavoursome for just a 50% cocoa recipe

That sounds really strong to me. I bet these are very rich.

Great review Jim, you are becoming a bit of an expert on your chocolate cakes lol.

I don't rate GU products personally. It wasn't long ago that I bought these chocolate truffles of theirs to try and I thought they were totally pants. As you would imagine they weren't exactly on the happy side of cheap either. Ever since then I have been really put off trying anything that they make.

One day I might give them another go, but probably not these. It sounds like there were more things you disliked about them rather than liked.

Linda said...

As much as these look great I will obvoiusly never be able to buy them because of the reasons I told you about yesterday Jim.

You were right about not being able to be too careful when it comes to nut allergies. You wouldn't believe the amount of things we cant buy because they contain the warning 'may include traces of nuts'. It is really frustrating because most the time the products haven't been anywhere near them. It's just the manufacture covering themselves.

My sister bought thse a few months ago, and neither of us were very impressed. Apart from being ridiculously expensive, the product just isn't worth it in my opinion, however its eaten. I've found that with pretty much all GU things though, overpriced and very overated.

If anyone spots in the margarine aisle in Sainsburys a little recipe card for chocolate brownies (in partnership with Flora - hence why its there) pick it up and try making them, theyre absolutely gorgeous! And leave out the yougurt for a even richer denser brownie. Yum!

Mark said...

In my eyes the perfect brownie has a crunchy outer portion, a soft underbelly and then a lovely gooey centre bit mmmmmm.
You can only get them like that if they are good just right.

Emma said...

If I had a pound for everytime my friend told me how brilliant these were I would be a very rich lady. She will go mad if she sees your review. Lol I dont think she will take too kindly to you pointing out the flaws.

Phil said...

These don't sound that impressive to me, and considering the price I wouldn't expect there to be any negatives at all. I don't think you can beat bakery fresh brownies to be honest, or ones you make at home. I once made some with 70% dark choc and they were the best I've ever tasted.

Im not too impressed by what you have to say about these in this review. You can get stuff like brownies and cakes for awfully cheap nowadays. £4 a pack sounds horrendously expensive for something that isnt altogether that decent.

I dont think I will want to buy these anytime soon. Thanks for the warning Jimbo.

I got to admire your dedication to the cause Jim. Trying all these brownies must be such hard work for you ;) lol.

I wish I had a job like this. A professional brownie conniseur sounds like a job made in heaven :) I think I would be pretty good at it, I certainly have a lot of experience in this line of work.

Oh yum brownies are my favourite type of cake. I think I might even treat myself to one at lunch now, you have tickled my fancy for one just maybe not a GU brownie lol. Discounting Heavenly Cakes who does everyone think makes the best ones? I used to think that the Greggs brownies were the best but then I tried the Marks and Spencer one. Its in a league of its own.

Its funny you should mention GU taking over your sainsburys they seem to be getting more and more products in my one as well. I wouldn't mind if their cakes weren't all so bloomin expensive. They are very tempting to look at but they aren't tempting enough for me to dip in to my pocket just yet. If you could review one of their cheesecakes or their something that would be brill.

I was well keen to see what you had to say about these. After reading your review I'm a lot less interested in trying them for myself now.

They looks decent enough in your photo but there is something about the way you describe them as 'a little one dimensional' that makes me think they aren't going to be anything special. If they get put on some sort of deal I might bite but I think I wont bother now.

Nice one Jim these were interesting to see reviewed. It is a shame to see GU lame out though, I would have expected far better from these guys.

Andrew said...

You lot have got me dreaming of hot brownies with ice cream now :) It is the weekend I might just have to treat myself at some point.

Your collection of brownie reviews is getting impressively extensive Jim. You might be able to call yourself a chocolate and brownie expert soon lol.

Hi All,

The weekend is again upon us! I hope you are all looking forward to '7Days of Chocolate Reviews' tomorrow. I have another NEW product lined up to exhibit (dont get too excited!).

As for todays review I was more than happy completing the reader request for this one. If you guys have anymore products you want to see reviewed you know what to do.

Rachel - No problem. Thanks for submitting the request.

David - I think nuts are nice touch for brownies. They should have just made them a bit bigger in these though. They were a little tiddly.

Nick - I wouldn't like to put you off trying them for yourself so I would say if you can spare the expense then they are worth trying. If you are willing to pay more and be patient, Heavenly Cakes win hands down mind you.

Francesca - I have seen those melting puddings. They look nice, I will give them a try if I see them on promotion. It would be an expensive excercise reviewing the whole range.

Steven - Indeed, if anyone is considering buying these I would advise you all to take a good look at the date before you put them in your baskets.

Alex - I'm not a cake expert at all ... I'm not a chocolate expert! I just buy these things and choose to right about them.

Nigel - Why not treat your mates to some superior Heavenly C's? As for the match I think we will win but it will be a tight match as normal.

Francesca - If I could bake I would make homemade brownies .... I'm not kitchen hand unfortunately.

Lauren - A load of people had been asking me to review them to be honest. It was about time I got around to scratching the surface of the GU range. No word from Heavenly about any store listings yet. I hope they do get their break, they deserve it.

Anon / Linda - I feel your pain both of you. It must be really hard having to look at what products you can/cant eat when it comes to nuts.

Daisy - That would seem like a fitting reward. Good luck with the diet.

Ana - Indeed those are the ones I believe she is talking about. I will make sure I get around to reviewing them sometime. Perhaps in winter when it gets a bit colder (haha I dont think that will be too long if the weather today is an indication.)

Matt - That is why I tried them in several different circumstances chap. I couldn't possibly try them just the one way.

Andrew - I will investigate to see if my local Tesco does them since they come with such a glowing recommendation :D

Katie - Haha this word 'expert' is bugging me. I'm not an expert when it comes to any of these things. My opinion is only as valid as any of your own.

Duncan - I had a similarly bad experience with their salted caramels not long ago. They were pretty terrible it has to be said.

Alan - As I said above chap, cooking isn't a talent of mine :D Out of interest are there any other GU products you would recommend? I doubt I will ever review them all so it would be good to know which ones to try prioritise.

Mark - Totally agree, The centre does need to have a bit of density to it though.

Emma - Oh dear I hope she doesn't leave a comment. I can imagine it would be full of expletives haha.

Phil - Bakery fresh now theres a thing you dont see much anymore ... proper local bakeries. We seemingly say this everytime I review some sort of cake product dont we. Its sad but true that our local bakeries are disappearing off the face of the planet.

JT - Long time no see! Sorry to put you off these but this was my honest opinion of them.

Kim - That would be a damn good job wouldn't it. I hope the company would give a complimentry gym pass with it though haha.

Colin - There are so many to mention it is hard to whittle it down to just one. Can I just not discount Heavenly Cakes and say they are my favourite brownies ever :D

Maggs - I'm not a big fan of cheesecake if I'm honest. Let me see what I can find in Sainsbury's next time I'm in there.

Andrew - Everyone deserves some sort of treat at the weekend. Whether it's a bottle of wine, pint of beer or a bunch of brownies ... or all 3 :D We should all enjoy ourselves.

..... and on that note I'm outta here for the weekend. Enjoy the post tomorrow. Please be sure to post up and news stories I no doubt will have missed.

JIM
