September 18/19th: '7Days of Chocolate Reviews' - Edition 55

SEPTEMBER 18th: Cadbury Wishes

'Milk chocolate star with textured milk chocolate and truffle centre'
Kcal 165 Fat 9.9g Fat(sats) 5.8g Carbs 17.2g

Just like last week I'm going to disrupt the usual style of '7Days of Chocolate Reviews' with a mini post about these new Cadbury Wishes. Last weekend I couldn't quite believe it when my eyes became fixated on a set of shelves bearing Christmas products in Tesco. Just one week into September and the supermarkets are already three months ahead of the rest of us - unbelievable huh!? Nestled in and amongst all the standard fair Cadbury Roses and Nestle Quality Street tins, these new Cadbury Wishes were shouting out for me to give them a try. You may recall earlier this year that I posted an article in a previous '7Days of Chocolate Reviews' which told the PR story behind the concept of the product.

To keep this review short and succinct I can straight off the bat tell you that these Cadbury Wishes are quite simply Cadbury Wispas moulded in to the shape of stars. Is this a bad thing!? Well no, not really! The packaging looked very smart and there was obviously no expense spared with the thick gold foil wrapping material which gave the product exceptional stand out. The inner chocolate star was pretty awkward to eat given it's large size and crumbly contents, however I couldn't really begrudge this given the concept of the product.

When it came to taste it served up exactly the experience I was expecting. Being Cadbury milk chocolate it was sweet and milky in taste and delivered all the usual Cadbury chocolate pleasantries - there was no differentiation between the taste of the outer chocolate and 'truffle centre which came described on the packaging'. Compared to a Wispa bar the inner aerated texture half wasn't quite as well implemented given the thinness at which it melted. The bubbly sensation created was apparent, yet just not quite as profound and ultimately pretty short lived.

Overall I don't think I will be stocking up on these for myself during the run up to Christmas, but at the same time I would be more than happy with the thought of gifting them as a small present for a friend. A dosage of Cadbury Caramel or some sort of nut praline would probably have livened up the 'truffle' portion of this Cadbury Wishes quite nicely, though I guess this would add to the complexity of the production and significantly lower the contribution they could make to charity. It's not a must try product for it's quality but at least you can feel happy in the knowledge that a portion of your monies is going to a good cause.

Cadbury Wishes are delicious - thanks Jim, I will be buying more. Unlike a lot of the gimmick fare esp at xmas these are actually nice tasting and not cheapo cake/cooking chocolate. Go Cadbury, keep making them!

Looking forward to you trying the Bliss bar.

Thats a fair review. It must have been a little difficult to write about because it doesn't seem to be the best thing ever but its for charity. Oh well I will probably buy one at one point.

Nick said...

Thanks for the reviews this week Jim. Did you notice that you rated every single product in the 7 to 8 range this week? Lol I know I am sad for noticing. It must be your average score if that is what the majority of things get.

Jim do you know when you will be reviewing the Cadbury Bliss I'm really excited to see what you think of it. I really like the sound of it.

Thank for you another week of chocolate splendour ;)

Jimbo you forgot to post your story about chocolate being healthy again lol. Could you not find one this week or something?

Will you be doing anything special for chocolate week? What is it btw?

I hope they saved me a bit of that worlds biggest chocolate bar lol. Did you have any idea what the did with it? I wouldn't of thought it would have been safe for consumption.

Oh yum I do like those lemon jaffa cakes. If I said I liked them more than the normal Jaffa Cakes will I be cast in to a pit of flames :-)

I like your review of the Cadbury Wishes. I do find it incredible that they are selling Christmas stuff already.

Robert said...

Oh I was going to mail you about that biggest chocolate bar ever. Lol you should have reviewed that, it would have got a ten for sustenance at least hahahha

Duncan said...

Have Cadbury said who they are targeting that new bar at? By the look of the picture on the press release it looks a lot like that old Cadburys Apricot crumble thing they used to make. They used to say that was targetted at women didn't they :/

Daisy said...

I look forward to your Bliss review. I am guessing because of your chocolate blogging guru status you will be getting a sneak preview of what it is like?

Lol I hope Cadburys dont see your review of the Wishes. Lol they might not be too happy about it.

Thank you for the reviews this week Jim. Lemon jaffa cakes sound awful. Why change something that doesn't need changing :(

Jim,

I had to drop you a little note thanking you for contributing to my school work this week. I used a screenshot of your website to demonstrate what a blog was. Lol my teacher did ask me what website it was and I told her. She couldn't believe that a website dedicated to chocolate existed.

Here is a BBC report about that chocolate bar:

It looks so big.

Looking forward to the cadburys bliss review jim. Dont forget about the new kit kat senses caramel.

I also thought the Cadbury Wishes was disappointing for what it was. I dont the see point of Cadbury making it exactly the same as a bar of Wispa. Like you said it was less easy to eat because of its shape and it wasn't like it was bigger either. If it wasn't for charity of would have categorically backed you saying its just not worth it.

Stu said...

Jim you didn't pass comment about having to go on to the make a wish website inorder for your donation to go through. Did you forget or something?

I think it's ludicrous that you need to do that for it to count. It defeats the object of the donation.

Alan said...

I've tried these and thought they were really nice.

Not sure why everyone is saying its just a Wispa in the shpae of a star - Wispas dont have truffle in them!? Very odd lol. I'll certainly buy them again.

@Stu - you dont need to go on the website to donate, you're donating just by buying as its part of the profits that go to charity. Its not like that silly Nestle thing where you have to log on and do whatever it is which us stupid really isnt it.

@Duncan - the Bliss bar is totally different to the Crumble bar - its a vanilla mouse filled DM. Although it may be aimed at the same consumers.

Tricky said...

Do you think all these new cadburys bars are anything to do with kraft taking them over? Since the takeover got announced we have had

* bar of plenty
* wishes
* stars and strips
* bliss

thats loads for cadbury if you think down the years.

Darren said...

I also thought the wishes star was a little average. its just cadburys chocolate really isn't it. Nothing more, nothing less. I would probably have another but it was nothing special.

Phil said...

That Wishes thing looks so...uninspired. I get that it's for a good cause and all, but still.

@Tricky - I was thinking that too, Kraft have brought out quite a few new products since taking over. Gotta respect them for that, although it's a shame they're not better flavour variations.

Ben said...

Thank you for all your reviews Jim. I don't think I will be rushing out to buy one of those Wishes things any time soon, it looks decidedly average to me. How random that its Amernia than make the worlds biggest chocolate bar. I could believe it for the Americans but not Armenia! Very random.

Alan said...

@Tricky - the only bar that is remotely connected to Kraft is the new Bliss bar - last weeks press report stated that is the first 'new product development' bar released since Kraft took over. But even that doesnt mean Kraft actually had a hand in its creation. I think it will be at least another year before we actually see any of Krafts 'creations' so to speak.

The other bars will all have been in the pipeline for a while before they made it into the production, the BOF range certainly.

It will be interesting to see though if the Bliss bar bears the Kraft name anywhere. No other Cadbury bar does yet lol

Cheers for the mention of the Halo/Mana Potion review thing I did.

It was a lot of fun, and I still felt the effects of the wonderful elixir for a good couple of days.

Kels said...

Awww I thought the wishes was well nice. I get what you mean about it being exaclty like a wispa bar, that isn't a bad thing IMO.

Phil said...

@Alan - you're right on the Bar Of Plenty range but there does seem to have been more activity than usual with Cadbury products. The Stars & Stripes came as a surprise, and seems more about marketing than creating a genuinely new product. Also there's been the new Milka bars.
I'm curious to see if the Bliss bar will be any good or just another marketing trick.

Gosh I'm becoming cynical lol.

Chris said...

You guys should both try these things before you diss them too much. I got big hopes for this new bliss bar. I find it tiresome that its another chocolate aimed at females but that doesn't matter at the end of things anyway. It's gonna be all about the chocolate.

Anonymous said...

When are they going to start selling that bliss chocolate?

Ana said...

@Tracey: At the bottom of the picture it says "A factory worker chops small pieces for people to taste. Next month it will be divided up and handed out for free to members of the public."

So it will get eaten.

These Wishes stars look so pretty. :)

Hi All,

I hope everyone is having a nice weekend. Thanks for all the kind words about the reviews this week. Believe it or not I actually think the next five coming up are far more exciting :D

Lily - You sure you don't work for Cadbury :D

David - Indeed, it's never easy writing about products that have some sort of ethical story behind them. That is probably me being over sensitive mind you.

Nick - Nope I didn't notice that to be honest. Anything around the 7.5 mark is what you could consider average on this site. One day I will aggregate every score together to see what the average really is.

Rachel - Visit the site this week and you may well be pleasantly surprised.

Golden - I did indeed forget my token chocolate is healthy link. There were a lot of other things to report so I thought we could do without for one week at least.

Tracey / Robert - I'm assuming they ate it. It would of been a hell of a waste if they didn't.

Duncan - Given that they are in partnership with 'Nails Inc' I think we can safely assume this is indeed another bar aimed at a more female audience.

Daisy - I will be getting a sample sent my way that I can confirm. I don't think Cadbury can have too many qualms with my Wishes review. There isn't anything contentious in there I don't think.

Warren - Don't worry the originals will still be available.

Sally - Great to hear I helped you out even if I didn't have to do anything :D

Anon - Don't worry I haven't forgotten. It's on the radar.

Alan - I think Duncan is talking about the wrapper chap. It does look exactly like the crumble bar. You are quite correct about the Bliss being the first one to have anything to do with Kraft though. All those other things that Tricky mentions had probably been planned for the best part of a year. It was funny the BOP range came out about a week after the takeover was announced and people were saying it was down to them :D

Phil - I do think it would have been nice for them to have made a little extra effort with the Wishes. Perhaps it was just one of those last minute opportunities that came up. I think you have every right to feel a little cynical towards Cadbury npd given the recent ones.

Ben - I did double take the fact that it was Amernia aswell. It could probably fed their country for a month haha :D

NLI - No problem. Halo Reach is great isn't it.

Anon - The bliss bar is released in October.

Ana - Next month!??? Hmmmm I hope they have some ideas for preserving it well.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Make sure you visit the site tomorrow :D I have something special lined up.

Somehow I had thought this pack was full of little stars so I was surprised to open it and find a big one. I loved it and the concept, and am going to have a tough time disinterestedly passing the checkout counter from now on.
