September 2nd: Burnt Sugar Chewy Caramels

Kcal 433 Fat 23.6g Fat(sats) 10.6g Carbs 53.4g (per 100.0g)

You may have noticed me mentioning over the last couple of months that I have been buying an increasing amount of chocolates from Waitrose supermarkets. If you are one of my UK readers and you haven't checked the confectionery shelf of your local store yet, you may well be in for a nice surprise. Not only do they seem to offer a wide range of imported chocolates, but they also for some reason seem to carry a lot more smaller niche brands. A name that would fall nicely in to that category would be 'Burnt Sugar', a brand that has been fleetingly mentioned by ChocolateMission readers over the past year. Today I thought I would give the brand it's first run on the rating system by taking a look at these 'chewy caramels dipped in dark chocolate'.

£1.99 of my monies bought me a 110.0g pack that included several variable sized pieces. Taking consideration of the range as a whole, I have to mention that I liked the stand out that the different Burnt Sugar products had on the shelf. The varieties on offer were nicely differentiated thanks to some sensible colour coding, though consistency was kept with the Burnt Sugar brand logo nicely decorating each box of each. Inside the exterior packaging the caramels were kept within a transparent film packet. This wasn't the most glamorous looking style of presentation, however it cannot be denied that it kept the contents in a well maintained condition, as the toffee like aromas that were released once the packet was opened smelt glorious.

As you may have guessed from the product description this was a product formed of two key constituents. According to the outer packaging the outer dark chocolate comprised 33.0% of the total product, whilst the caramel made up the remaining 67.0%. In terms of quality the two varied massively in what they delivered. Starting with the negatives, I have to say I thought the dark chocolate was pretty poor. I found the melt pretty waxy and slow starting, whilst the cocoa flavours were more laid back and subtle than I was hoping for. According to the packaging the chocolate was of a 55% cocoa min recipe, though the chocolate flavour hit was pretty poor and didn't create the desired flavour impact in the mouth. Conversely my perceptions of the inner chewy caramel fillings were much more positive, primarily due to them contributing about ten times more to the resulting taste. Just like the outer chocolate, the flavours were slow starting, however once the caramel had heated and softened in the mouth the delicious butter led toffee flavours shone through nicely. It was very noticeable that each piece left a lasting impression of burnt, toasted sugary flavours in the mouth, which probably shouldn't have taken me by surprise given the brand name :D

Overall these Chewy Caramels have scored reasonably well on the rating system, but they could have easily done even better had the quality of the chocolate been superior. If I was rating the caramel centres in isolation I probably would have gone as high as awarding them a 9.0 out of 10, as they delivered on everything that a good quality caramel should do. The centres were most enjoyable when sucked on, which made them pleasantly soft in texture whilst they released their delicious tasting buttery, sweet flavours. This was all well in good, but unfortunately the dark chocolate that coated each piece was just not up to scratch, and was lacking any real flavour depth. Given the varying quality of the two different components it is a bit difficult saying whether I would recommend these or not. I guess it just depends on what you are looking for from the product. If you aren't the biggest fan of dark chocolate you might see the mild chocolate as a positive thing, but on the other hand if you are after a caramel with a rich tasting dark chocolate flavour hit you are going to be left a little disappointed. Second opinions are very welcome .... please share them ChocolateMission fans!

Cool Jim it's good to see you reviewing a new brans we haven't see before.

I've heard about Burnt Sugar products before but never seen them. I will keep a watch out know you have confirmed they are pretty tasty.

Lol I think the packaging leaves a little to be desired but I like the sound of the dark chocolate and hard caramels.

It's a shame that the chocolate wasn't as good as the caramel. You would have been on to something really special had that been as good.

Yay I was filled with glee when I saw this :-) I told you that Burnt Sugar was worthy of a review lol.
I knew if you were going to pick one of their products to do it was going to be their burnt caramels ;)

I would have been a bit more generous with the score, but I think you make a fair point about the chocolate. If you like it really strong it isn't the greatest.

Thanks for doing the review.

£1.99 is a little dear for not many chocolates. I guess you could raise the point that because they are hard caramels they will last longer.

Still I think it is a little expensive and it's not like the packaging says to you they are premium quality or anything.

Jim have you seen this

http://www.talkingretail.com/products/product-news/16091-new-melt-in-the-mouth-werthers-variant.html

These just reminded me of reading that a few days ago. They sound well nice.

There aren't many decent hard caramel products around. The only other one I can think of is Riesens, though they are becoming increasingly hard to get hold of nowadays. At least my teeth are being saved lol. Nice review mate.

I believe Waitrose is the only place that stocks burnt sugar now.

I used to see them in Tesco but they stopped doing them a while back. I guess they just musn't have sold that well. I can't say anything about these caramels but I have tried a few of their other sweets and I thought they were nice.

I've heard of Burnt Sugar before but not in Waitrose, I think it was in the Lakeland catalogue lol

Personally i really like the pckaging apart from the plastic bag, but the design is really fun, and I don't think the price is overly expensive. I'd happily buy this as a little gift (or one the other varieties), even as a stocking filler. While these sound nice, I never buy hard caramels because they pull my fillings out haha I prefer fudge or soft toffee. I think they do fudge actually, will have to look into it :)

Duncan said...

Jim I just took a look at their website. You know I was saying if you fancied trying any fudge products? Well they do a pretty nice sounding one for you:

"crumbly chocolate fudge - The peculiarly crumbly sensation of fudge-meets-the-mischievous-pleasure-of-chocolate."

Give that a try if you can.

I'm not in to chewy caramels. I prefer the softer kind you get in cadburys bars etc. Like Nick said though Jimbo it's good to see you review a new brand. It has been a while since you have had someone totally new come up.

Why did they use dark chocolate. I can't stand it so that would rule me out ever trying these now. They should of just made them with milk chocolate.

Steven_F said...

Thanks for the review Jim these do sound like the sort of thing I would love.

The way you talk about the dark chocolate doesn't excite me that much but it sounds as if the caramel bit has some great promise at least. I don't live around a Waitrose supermarket but I will take a look next time I'm in there.

I've had a few Burnt Sugar products and always found them very tasty. Their ginger fudge in particular was very good.
I guess they're not so good with chocolate eh ;)
Like Justin I'm not too keen on hard caramels, usually they end up making my jaw ache. Strangely though a lot of older people seem to like them.

That's me :) :) I told you about them ages ago.

I probably would have gone as high as awarding them a 9.0 out of 10, as they delivered on everything that a good quality caramel should do. I can see what you are talking about here. I didn't mind the chocolate TBH because I don't like strong dark chocolate. If you do I can see why you would think it isn't the best.

Thanks for the review you did a good job.

I have tried a few of their other products before but not these. If you like fudge I can highly recommend their fudge with sea salt. Trust me it's awesome.

I will have to give these a go next.

@Stu Do you know anywhere that sells Riesen chocolates now? They used to be one of my favourite things but I rarely get the chance to buy them any longer :( BRING BACK RIESEN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nigel said...

I'd not see Burnt Sugar before today. These sound nice enough but nothing to get too excited about by the looks of it.

Are these made by one of the bigger companies (like say Green & Blacks are made by Cadburys etc). They look like the sort of thing another company would make.

Btw Jim thank the lord we didn't buy Carlton Cole lol. I was really worried about that.

Mysterio6_19 said...

Jim was this one of those products you bought yourself or were you asked to write the review by burnt sugar?

I never realised that some companies were asking you to write reviews? How did you pull that off? Getting payed to eat chocolate is mental. I'd do it for free lol.

Colin said...

Thanks for the review Jim I've seen these around a few times online but I have never taken the bait with them.

I don't think I will bother considering them any more. I like to have a well rounded product, not just one that has nice caramel but shoddy chocolate. Thanks anyway.

OMG review their chocolate fudge it's the best. My friend bought a bag of it once and I swear we ate it in like minutes. It was so nice you gotta try it.

Alex said...

Cool post but I think it was harsh marking them down for their dark chocolate. Not all people like it like 80% strong you know. You should take a more rounded and wider viewpoint when you start giving out scores to things. I think these deserved at least a high 8.

Ganesh said...

I have to say these really do tickle my fancy. I've just take na look on their website and it says that they only sell in Waitrose and some other niche stores. That is a little annoying for me because the nearest Waitrose isn't for a good few miles out from where I live.

Sally said...

These aren't my sort of thing but I do like the sound of their fluffy nougat. Are you starting to take requests again Jim? I know you stopped for awhile becuase you got too many.

If you are I have a few things I want to see you review again. Namely the Green and Blacks white chocolate. I can't believe you scored it so badly but it was ages ago, it was one of the first reviews you did so your tastes might have changed.

Ria said...

Thanks again for bringing us something I wouldn't normally cme across. I love caramel and these sound lovely. Just a pity the nearest Waitrose is 150 miles away.

Nick

It was my first experience with Burnt Sugar and it was pretty poiive. I would certainly give some more of their products a try. If you give any of them a try let me know your thoughts.

Daisy

I don't think the packaging is that bad. It's by no means awful to say the least. Had the chocolate been better they would have indeed got a better mark.

Kim

Filled with glee :D that is good to hear.

You were among several that told me to look at their products. They seem to already have a strong following for a smallish brand.

Richard

You love the pricing don't you. Again I agree with you about the packaging but I don't think that £1.99 is expensive at all. That is about the going rate for a 100.0 chocolate bar.

David

Thanks for the link David. No I hadn't seen them, they sound cool don't they. I will give them a review when they come out.

Stu

Riesens are becoming rarer and rarer I agree. The only places I see them nowadays are the quirkier smaller local shops. I still think they are pretty popular in Germany, just obviously not here in the UK.

Rachel

The website would suggest you aren't wrong. They seem to be the only mass market stockist that they have on their books. If you think of any of their other products you like be sure to let me know what they are.

Alan

That is a random spotting? Lakeland catalogue.

I agree I think the outer box is good and the price is about right for this sort of thing. It would be nicer with a foil wrapper but I think they just want to show people what is inside which is understandlable.

Duncan

That chocolate fudge does sound nice. You got to laugh at those descriptions sometimes, but yeah that does sound suitable for the site. I will look out for it.

Justin

I like my caramels soft aswell but of course I have to be open to trying all these things. I agree about trying new brands and manafacturers, they are almost the most interesting reviews to write as I get to do some background research before.

Nah I think the dark chocolate was a great foil for the sweetness of the caramel. It would have been too sweet with milk or white chocolate.

Steven

Waitrose is fast becoming my favourite place to do my shopping nowadays. They price match Tesco on a lot of their braded items at the moment which is all good. Obviously they do have some expensive produce aswell, mainly their fresh stuff. If you have never been in there to take a look at their chocolate selection I suggest you do so.

Phil

I wouldn't suggest chewing on these 'chewy caramels' I think your jaw might drop off by the end of the packet haha :D

Aside from the ginger fudge can you think of any other chocolate products they do that are worth trying. I'm pretty intrigued by the choclate fudge I have to say.

Katie

You and many others did :D Thanks for the requests and suggestions.

Keep them coming, you know I'm happy to do anything you guys want to see.

Golden

Fudge with sea salt sounds awesome. Let me know what you think of these if you try them.

Eric

If you are canny you can still find them in some smaller shops. I do see what you mean though they have disappeared from all the major retailers haven't they.

Nigel

Indeed I didn't see the sense in Liverpool buying him either.

I believe Burnt Sugar are just their own company. I don't think they have a holding company - I will take a look on their website again in a minute. I'm pretty sure thats right though.

Mysterio

I bought these myself as people requested I take a look at some Burnt Sugar products.

Colin

Please don't let me put you off buying them chap. Remember it's just my opinion so please do give them a go and let me know what you think. I never like to think that I put people off trying things.

Anon

Don't worry I had been convinced in to trying them already :D

Alex

I know! I do try and get second opinions on most things I try. The score you see is the most reflective opinion I'm able to give at the time. It's only a number - don't get hung up on it.

Ganesh

That is annoying - perhaps it is worth trying to see if they sell their products online anywhere.

Sally

I am indeed taking requests - I never stopped :S I'm not sure where you got the idea I had told people to stop sending them in! Please just leave me a note on the requests page.

Ria

150 miles away!? Oh dear that doesn't sound. Again I can only suggest you look online to see if they sell their products anywhere. I will have a look myself and let you know if I find somewhere reliable to share.

Thanks for the comments everyone. It's good to see you have positive things to say about Burnt Sugar. They appear to be a nice little company. One more review coming up tomorrow for this week.

Great review Jim. You've got me intrigued enough to give these a try if I ever see them.

I just had a quick google of Burnt Sugar but came up empty for online sellers. I'm guessing you had no luck either then?
