Hotel Chocolat Mondays return, and this week I kick off the first of my 2010 Halloween reviews. Those of you who have followed the site for the last year will be aware that Halloween is far from my favourite holiday season. As much as I don't like the day itself, I have to admit I have always been more than willing to review some of the offerings from the likes of Hotel Chocolat etc (See past reviews HERE). My look at the 2010 range starts today with me taking a look at the 'Little Box of Horrors' selection, which came described as a 'hair-raising collection of horrific Halloween chocolate figures, lollies, and spine-chilling caramels'.Generally speaking, the presentation of the entire package was fantastic. My photos wont be doing it justice, but the box was beautifully presented with the all the inner constituents remarkably crafted in to some very cool looking Halloween designs. Below are my brief thoughts and ratings on the different bits and pieces.
Skull Chocolate Licks - For something that looked so gruesome these were some very tasty chocolate lollies which came in Hotel Chocolat's standard milk and white chocolate varieties. With each weighing 35.0g they proved to be a decent sized snack, although I did sort of defeat the object of them by removing the sticks at the first given opportunity. Kids will love these. Very Good.
Yikes Milk Chocolate Pieces - These were simply three milk chocolate Halloween Shapes that had been lifted straight from the Hotel Chocolat Boo! Selection. The chocolate moulds looked aesthetically interesting, and the 40% milk chocolate was it's usual top quality generating a finely balanced sweet cocoa taste that had a healthy creamyness to it. A little boring, but hey you can't complain when the chocolate is that decent. Very Good.
Milk Chocolate Figure Slabs - One thing you can certainly say about this box is that you get value for money. These 60.0g milk chocolate slabs came in different three different varieties - Terrifying Tombstone (plain milk chocolate), Fiendish Finger (with shortbread pieces), and lastly Ghoulish Ghost (with popping candy). I could have done without the popping candy slab (I gave that one away haha!), but both the biscuit and the shortbread slabs were delicious as you would expect. Very Good.
Vampire's Eyes Caramel Truffles - These looked so, so gross when I was photographing them :D I was at first a little put off by the artificial looking red caramel centres, but I was a little reassured by the 'naturally coloured' billing. In terms of taste I wouldn't have chosen to pair white and caramel together (sugar rush!), however these still proved themselves to be very tasty and the creamy, vanilla flavours of the white chocolate, and the buttery, toffee flavoured caramel seemed largely unaffected by the odd colourings. Very Good.Overall this was a fine collection of different chocolate treats with every single piece well worthy of it's Very Good rating. With pretty much all of the different constituents comprising of their house milk and white chocolate recipes, I was never afraid of what the standard of the chocolate might offer - everything was simply delicious and I was happy eating each and every one of them. When you couple the tastiness of all the pieces with the fantastic standard of presentation and value for money, then you have a pretty special Halloween option at hand. If I was being overly critical I would suggest they leave the popping candy slab out and substitute it for a white chocolate slab to be consistent with everything else in the box. That said I can see younger chocolate lovers being keen on that slab as well as the lolly pieces so my views probably aren't entirely representative. If you are looking for an 'all-in-one' Halloween selection you should check this Little Box of Horrors collection out.

a new product, halloween, hotel chocolat monday post lol loving your work Jim.
This looks like a great box of mini goodies. I will have to weigh up what else they are offering this year and make a decision if this is the right thing for me. It looks likely.
I think the slabs look like they could have been a bit more exciting but the rest of the bits and pieces look pretty great.
Lol I can almost sense how much you hate the popping chocolate. I used to love that sort of thing as a kid. There was a certain brand of sweets by wonka (nerds I think!?) that I used to eat by the truckload.
Cool review Jim thank you. What I like about these chocolates is how decently made they look. All of them look like they have had some effort put in to them I think. The shapes are all properly done, you get so many holiday themed chocolates nowadays that aren't even holiday themed, just their wrappers are.
Lol those caramels look so wacky. I'm not sure I would like the red coloured filling either but they sound like they taste nice enough to convince me otherwise.
If they had made the slabs a little better I think this would have been too good to turn down trying but I think I would get a little bored of so much milk chocolate.
Rxxx
Jim do you know if they will be adding any other Halloween chocolates to their website before the 30th?
They have their stuff up so early, I don't want to jump the gun before I can see absolutely everything I can possibly choose form.
I don't like the skull lollies they look so freaky. I don't like halloween either Jim you arent alone in that.
As nice as this all looks I'm a little disappointed to see that everything is so plain. It would have been better if they had included some more flavoured things along with the plainer lollys and chocolate shapes.
I think the point someone has made about the slabs being wasted is a good one. I expected more from them.
Dx
Geeze what a surprise. Firstly a hotel chocolate thing appearing on a monday and secondly it scoring well. Things wont ever change will they.
The salted caramel eyes sound brill. Can you buy them on their own? I wouldn't be that fussed about having some of the rest of the chocs, but those eye chocolate look great for a small Halloween gift for someone.
They look like they are going to be wrank but they sound well tasty by the sounds of things. I would expect them to be anyway if they are HC.
If anyone is wondering this box costs a hefty £25!!!!!
First I read Jim's review and I thought it sounded all great but that price has put me off straight away. I don't care how many ribbons and bows etc it comes with. Nothing is worth paying 25 quid (before postage lol!!!!!)

Yay I'm so happy you decided to review halloween stuff this year. There was a distinct lack of halloween love last year, all you did was moan about how you didn't like it lol.
This is a good start. I hope everything is this good so I have some hard decision to make in a few weeks. Thanks lovely.
All of those things are so similar. Why didn't they include any dark chocolate at all? It's biased towards kids I think.
Jim have you seen that cadburys have brought back creme eggs for halloween this year?
All they have done is changed the foil packaging to say Cadburys Scream Egg. As much as I like them it's a pity that they really are available all year round now. It's take away that special feeling you get when you first see them around easter time.
@Steven I don't think they needed to do anything more than they already did with the chocolate slabs. They already put biscuit and popping stuff in there. What more could you possibly want? Sometimes I think people want to over complicate things, theres nothing wrong with just a plain bit of choc you know ;)
Cool review Jim it was a sensible thing to start off (lol gives me time to save up my money if what @Richard says is true). Will you be reviewing any of the smaller things they do? I assume you will be right? I think that could be more realistic for me to think about buying. I'm a bit broke at the moment.
Hotel Chocolat getting a high rating off our Jim? Why I never thought the day would come lol ;) Just kidding with you mate.
I think this looks like a great thing to buy for a friend or to share amongst the family. I think I would be grabbing those caramels before anyone else though, they sound great.
P.s. football tomorrow. What you think the score will be?
Ah ha! This was one of many things I had my eye on for my g/f for Haloween this year. It's good to see it wouldn't let me down if I did decide to go for it.
My only concern was that it was a little pricey but there are so many things in there it looks like it can justify why it is high. Its a toss up between this and a 'best dressed vampire'. What does everyone think?
@Richard I had no clue it was that sort of money. My opinion is kind of changed now. I think I would rather mix and match some of the smaller items they make for £20 rather than buy just this one big box. It's a shame they dont do a mixed selection that you could pick and make up.
I find it funny how this site is infinitely better for finding out what hotel chocolat products actually contain. If you look at the product descriptions on their website they are so vague. How the hell are we all supposed to know what vampire eyes are? Lol in short thank you Jim :)
Are you still accepting requests for halloween? If you are it would cool to hear what you think about that Yummy Bones skull thing. It looks good to me.
Steven weren't those wonka sweets called Millions? They are the only popping candy sweets I can remember.
This is such a brilliant collection of chocolate stuffs. I just wish I could afford this sort of thing :( Im in the same boat as richard, I dont think I could justify paying that sort of money on chocolate.
Jim if you ever have any casts off or get bored of reviewing all this chocolate you do know Im available as a part time assistant right ;-)
I would love trying out chocolates like this all the time you are so lucky. The caramels in this crop of chocolates look so freaky. I'm not sure about making them look like eyes they are a bit scary looking.
I could have sworn that they had loads more halloween products than this last year. It looks to me like the range is a lot smaller.
Apart from making the slabs a bit more exciting this looks perfect for me. Do you know if this is safe for people with nut allrgies? It looks to me like it is one of the very few things they make which has no nuts in WOOOOOP!
This looks like a fantastic lot of different things to share amongst a group of people. I think if I had to choose I would be making a beeline for the caramels and the slabs. They look the most suitable things for my tastes.
Thinking about it now I have to agree for once with richard. Twenty five pounds for the whole lot is a big chunk of change considering I wouldnt want everything they are giving away in it.
The chocolates are nicely made an everything but that doesn't make up for that fact that most of the bits are just plain chocolate. I would be a lot less likely to buy this now I know the price of it.
@Ben imho both would be great gifts. That chocolate vampire is pretty cute. The horrors box has a nice selection too, though some of it is sort of aimed at kids...and those vampire eyeballs are just wrong lol! I would never be brave enough to eat one, though apparently everyone else would :D
Im keen for everything but the eyes. I have a thing about eyes in general, I cant stand people touching their own let alone mine.
The idea of biting in to something that looks like one makes me feel a little faint.
Omg this is goign to be just perfect for my kids. Thanks so much Jim. One of them loves white chocoalte and the other prefers milk so this is win/win all round.
Im not sure what they are going to think of the vampire eye caramel balls. I think even they might be put off by the idea of eating eyeballs. Thank you again for such a fantastic write up.
Im a bit squeemish when it comes to eyes but even I think I would gobble those caramels up. Why don't HC do just a plain pack of chocolate caramels? I would of thought that would of been one of the first things they would have made.
What cool collection of stuff. Im well up for halloween this year. What is it you hold against it Jim? Its just a bit of fun + you can get loads of chocolate if you go trick or treating.
Just out of curiosity, what was the third Halloween shape? I only see two in the picture (ghost & vampire). Was it a cat? Because that's what I see in the picture on their website.
I agree with the person who said that this seems to be mostly for kids - just milk and white chocolate, popping candy...
For me, things could have been made more interesting if they had made the three Halloween shapes out of three different types of chocolate (dark, milk, white), if they had added a dark chocolate lolly. They could have also added some orange (or some other fruit) to the plain chocolate. And, most importantly, I would have loved to see the popping candy slab replaced by this kind of slab!
The eyes seem something really interesting, I certainly haven't seen anything like that before.
Regarding the price: I think £25 is horribly expensive. If I am to consider the fact that this is high quality chocolate, that it is a seasonal offer and that I don't really have access to it, I consider 75% of that amount (around £18 - meaning £2 per 60 g slab, £1.5 per lolly, and £1 for each eye and each Halloween shape) to be fine. Anyway, they also have an incomplete, but significantly cheaper version of this - it's the Halloween Pick-Me-Up Gift Bag - it lacks the lollies and it only has the ghost slab... oops, that's the popping candy! But it costs £10... less than half the price for more than half the chocolates.
When I seen these in the catalogue they really took my interest as everything looked so detailed. Glad your own photos make each piece look just as impressive and as if a lot of time and effort was put into making and then presenting them. No real surpises with your review in regards to the taste, glad to see Hotel Chocolat keeping their usual high standards. I think my favourites would be the Fiendish Finger and the Vampire Eyes. Tempted to try the eyes just to see how red the caramel is. I know you gave each a "very good" but what was your favourite item to review?
Thanks once again for a great review!
Hi All,
Thanks for the kind comments today on what is my first Halloween post of the year. I was expecting some sort of 'what are you doing writing about Halloween already?' type comment but there doesn't seem to be one .... yet :D.
Steven / Rachel / Daisy / Kevin - Re:'I think the slabs look like they could have been a bit more exciting '
I agree with you all there. I think they could have made them more impressive by fusing both the types of chocolate together for at least one of them.
Simon - Re:'Jim do you know if they will be adding any other Halloween chocolates to their website before the 30th'
This is your lot for this year. Some of their lines are going out of stock already so you might want to check them out sharpish.
Alex - Re:'Geeze what a surprise. Firstly a hotel chocolate thing appearing on a monday and secondly it scoring well. Things wont ever change will they'
No they probably wont. If you dont like it then I'm afraid you best look elsewhere for your chocolate reviews :D
Kim - Re: 'The salted caramel eyes sound brill. Can you buy them on their own?'
You cant buy the eyes specifically on their own but they do make other packs of salted caramels you can buy in their stores.
Richard / David - Re:'If anyone is wondering this box costs a hefty £25!!!!!'
It is a lot of money but if you are buying a Halloween gift pack for your family it works out very economical if it is Hotel Chocolat you are after. As long as people appreciate the quality I think it is worth it.
Katie - Re:'There was a distinct lack of halloween love last year, all you did was moan about how you didn't like it lol.
'
Oi I didn't moan .... I just merely suggested that I didn't like Halloween .... one or two times :D
Anon - Re:'Why didn't they include any dark chocolate at all? It's biased towards kids I think'
I think you answered your own question there.
Golden - Re:'Jim have you seen that cadburys have brought back creme eggs for halloween this year?'
I had seen that. You are right nothing is sacred anymore is it. Soon we will just be able to buy them all year round I think.
Justin - Re:'Will you be reviewing any of the smaller things they do?
Don't worry plenty more to come.
Nigel - Re: 'football tomorrow. What you think the score will be?'
Not to sure. We have a lot of injuries. Lets say 2-1 England.
Andrew - Re:'Are you still accepting requests for halloween?'
It is kinda a little late in the day but I will see what I can do. I will definitely be writing about the vampire thing on their website which is awfully similar.
Estelle - Re:'Jim if you ever have any casts off or get bored of reviewing all this chocolate you do know Im available as a part time assistant right '
Haha I will keep this in mind. I think you will have to join the queue though.
Tom - Re:' Do you know if this is safe for people with nut allrgies?
They have those details on the website chap. Probably best looking at the proper detail rather than asking me sorry.
Thea / Selina / Linda - Re:' I would never be brave enough to eat one, though apparently everyone else would'
I wouldn't be so sure of that. You should see these Cadbury things I will be featuring next week. They really are disgusting. I'm not even sure kids are going to like them myself. Too gross for kids!? Surely not eh!?
Joel - Re:'Why don't HC do just a plain pack of chocolate caramels?
I believe they do but they only sell them in their shops. It is annoying they don't put them online I agree.
Musterio - Re:'Im well up for halloween this year. What is it you hold against it Jim?'
I don't hold anything against it ... I just prefer other holidays over it. Christmas is a thousand times cooler than Halloween!
Ana - Re: 'what was the third Halloween shape?'
It was a 'scrummy skull'. The chocolates come in 8 different shapes, I cant remember them all but there were also fingers, tombstones, bats and cats! They all look pretty classy trust me.
What I have failed to mention in the review is that you get two boxes of the YIKES! chocolates. That is another set of three chocolates so that comparison you make when it comes to the pricing isn't totally accurate. Thats my fault for not being as clear as I should have been sorry.
Ria - Re:'I know you gave each a "very good" but what was your favourite item to review?'
The most interesting to review was the eyes for obvious reasons :D Despite having consumed tons of the stuff over the last year though I still don't think you can beat a good bit of 40% house milk chocolate from Hotel chocolat. It is an absolutely superb chocolate recipe, I don't think I will ever get bored of it.
Thanks for all the comments today everyone. Seemingly a lot of you like the ideas in this package but are a little put off by the price. I'm sure this is something that Hotel Chocolat will have in mind when they make similar things.
In other news I recieved my first box of Christmas samples off them
today .... only the 4kg :D I don't know how I'm going to get it home from the office.
JIM
Well these look interesting, those eyes are scary! lol Tbh I've never bothered with buying special chocolates etc for Halloween, I just don't see the point. What happened to just buying a bag of sweets for trick or treet and few toffee apples lol. The shelves in the shops groan under the weight of Halloween stuff now, its crackers. And I agree those Cadbury Dead Head things look really gross! :P
I wouldnt ever spend twenty five quid on chocolate but loads of the stuff in there does look sick. You lot are being wimps about the eyes, its only chocolate you scaredy pants.
Alan
Blimey matey that was some late night web surfing you were doing :D I'm so totally with you about the Halloween chocolates thing but I cant deny the popular demand for the reviews :D I think you are going to enjoy my review of the Cadbury Dead Heads later this week. I look forward to your extended views on them.
Tricky
Once you get over the way they look I dont think there will be too many people complaining about them. They taste so damn nice.
JIM
