October 22nd: Halloren Original Limoncello

Kcal 431 Fat 13.0g Carbs 69.0g (per 100.0g)

It's not all that often we get ChocolateMission debuts anymore, but today we have the German brand Haloren making their first appearance on the site. Shamelessy nicking some quick facts from Wiki: 'The Halloren Chocolate Factory (German: Halloren Schokoladenfabrik) is the oldest German chocolate factory. The first mention of the firm is recorded in 1804, and their most famous product is the "Halloren-Kugeln", or Halloren globes, which receive their name from the early salt workers, whose buttons the chocolates resemble'. Like many German brands the number of flavours offered by Halloren is really quite astounding. Thanks to ChocolateMission reader Franzi, I today got the chance to try these Limoncello Kugeln pieces, which are a special edition flavour for 2010.

These Halloren Limoncello schokolades came in a box which had a net weight of 125.0g and 16 chocolate pieces. The presentation of the product as a whole was very satisfactory. The box clearly communicated the flavour variant on offer and had very clear Halloren branding. The chocolates were also similarly impressive looking with the fondant like centres dual toned with yellow and white coloured halves. Sat within their plastic tray, the chocolates didn't emanate the strongest set of aromas ever, but there were intermittent suggestions of lemon and of course chocolate.

For those of you wondering what Limoncello is, please again let me refer to my pals at Wiki: 'Limoncello is an Italian lemon liqueur mainly produced in Southern Italy, and is traditionally served chilled as an after dinner digestivo' ... don't tell me you don't learn something every day on this website :D Anyway, these Limoncello centres were covered by a thin layer of 33% cocoa chocolate. In terms of quality it was a little difficult to determine just how good the chocolate was given the dominance of the lemon flavoured centre. Frankly it had very little input in the taste aside from the very early stages of the chocolates being in mouth, upon where I thought it generated a sufficient volume of unsweetened cocoa flavours. These chocolates were all about the Limoncello centres which were very sweet and fondant like in nature. The taste was heavily rooted in sugar, but the citrusy lemon flavours brought a refreshing, fruity flavour set to the party. Due to the sweetness these weren't chocolates I felt like I could consume in vast quantities, but I can imagine that eaten after a meal they would do a nice job of cleansing ones palette.

Overall this was solid, yet unspectacular first outing for Halloren on the site which I think is reflected by the round about average score of 7.0 out of 10. If it is a serious chocolate based confectionery you are after, I can straight away tell you that Halloren isn't the product you want to be looking at. The actual chocolate in the product was insignificant in the grand scheme things, and it was the Limoncello flavoured centres that unsurprisingly took centre stage. If I was being overly critical I would probably say that if you were to eat a whole box of these by yourself, the likelihood is that you would find the taste a little monotonous once you had got to the final few. Another thing worth bearing in mind for you liqueur chocolate fans is that the alcohol didn't really come through in the taste given the level of sweetness. This wasn't such a disappointment for me, but it was certainly noteworthy. These were by no means the greatest of products I have ever tried, but they certainly made me curious about trying more of the Halloren flavours.

7.0 out of 10

oooh now these look interesting. I haven't seen this brand anywhere before, are they just exclusive to Germany? Its cool that you review thing made by Cadbury which we can all buy but I enjoy seeing products I've never seen before just as much. It's nice to see what is out there.

Thanks for the history lesson at the beginning Jim :P Most useful that you feel the need to fill us all in on the company history before you talk about the chocolate lol.

I don't think these are the sort of chocs that would suit me but I have heard my mum talking about having Limoncello when she has been abroad so she might like them. Thanks for the review.

Omg Jim have you seen their website? They are another one of those German brands who feel the need to have a bazillion flavours. I'm not complaining or saying that is a bad thing or anything. It would be great if you could try out a few more of them.

Kim said...

I like the look of how they make up the middle bits. That dual colour thing they got going on is very funky lol.

I do like lemon flavoured sweets so I would be very willing to give these a try. When was the last time you saw a lemon flavoured chocolate? Lol I can't even think of one!!!!

Thanks for the review Jim I will have to look out for these next time I am in Germany. I think I am going to be visiting my grandparents there before the end of the year so I will have to fill up my suitcase on the way back lol.

I already have some of that marzipan you reviewed on my list.

A trip down memory lane! Nice to see you review a product from an east German company. I love the original Haloren Kugeln (the cacoa/cream). I think they are the only flavour they made when the GDR was still ins existence and in my opinion they are still the best of the lot! I find that many of the new flavours are just a tad too sweet and have a tendency to be a bit artificial tasting. That said, I have by far not tried all of them!

However, I guess having so many products/flavours probably did help to establish the company on the German market after 1990.

Anonymous said...

See I told you that these people were worth trying ;)
I know you have only given them a 7 but there are loads of better flavours that I think you will like more. At least you seem to recognise that they are something different from anything else you can buy.

I will send you some more of the other flavours to see if you like them better.

Nigel said...

2 wikipedia entries in one post? Lol Jim you would be lost without it wouldn't you mate.

These don't appeal to me that much because of the lemon flavouring. I'm not a fan of fondant things either really, oh well.

Are you looking forward to the footie this weekend? I will leaving you my predictions tomorrow morning I haven't forgotten.

Andrew said...

Jim this is going to sound very boring of me but please can I request that you just try out the original flavoured ones they make. Those are like the classic flavour and are in my opinion easily the best.
Its always the way with these things that they create loads and loads of flavours but the first ones they ever make are the best. Great review again today.

Brill review Jim thank you. I've not heard of these people before. I just have to hope they somehow make their way to the UK one day. They aren't the sort of thing I would pay over the odds to buy from outside I don't think.

Justin said...

Haloren eh? The only time I have heard of them is from a friend who once passed mention about them and said they were nice chocolates. I think she had just been on holiday to Austria so that sorta makes sense lol.

Roy said...

They look cool but 7/10 isn't shouting out to me that they are something I need to go to the effort of buying any time soon.

Jim have you seen or heard anything about Milkas christmas line up yet? I have just seen what ritter have with those three new ones. I take it you will be reviewing them yes?

So they are almost like sorbet in chocolate form? Lol that is a little dangerous! Aren't sorbets like supposed to be calorie free =)

Anne said...

Just had a look at their website! jeez, they do make lots of tasty things! :-)I have seen a lot of their products in German supermarkets but the amount of stuff on their website is crazy! (in a good way I guess ;-) We had the dessert chocolate selection last Christmas, they were rather nice too. Am actually now thinking of visiting their shop and museum over Christmas. :-) Why I never did before, seeing that my parents don't live that far away from it, is rather mind boggling. So thanks for giving me that inspiration with your review today.

I like the sound of these. I was looking up what limoncello was just yesterday because magnum ice cream are coming out with that as one of their new flavours

http://www.talkingretail.com/products/product-news/magnum-adds-liqueur-to-its-mini-range

The world is going limoncello crazy.

Richard said...

125g cost how much Jim?
I wouldn't pay that much for these because I know the ingredients would be really cheap.

They are just mostly sugar by the sounds of things so they wouldn't be worth paying over the odds for them.

Anonymous said...

what other flavours will you be writing about? can I leave you the names of the ones I want to see?

Gary said...

Why did you choose to try this flavour first? I'm not critcising you or anything but it just seems a little random you wanted to review an odd flavour like this before trying their traditional ones.

Colin said...

@Richard lol I knew you were going to ask something like that so I went and looked it up on www.worldofsweets.de

They seem to only cost EUR1.39 each so they seem like they are well cheap.

Tricky said...

Phew only seven out of ten :) I can handle not being able to have something that is only average.
It's when you give those chocs from Germany like 9s that this all gets a bit upsetting for me lol.

Thanks for the review Jim.

Ana said...

Oh, I'd love to try these... I'm a big citrus fan :D I think all that somebody has to do to sell me something sweet is to put an orange or a lemon on the wrapper :))

The ones we get here are the classic one (Whipped cream & Cocoa), Chocolate & Rum, Irish Cream (which I see they don't even have listed on their website), Chocolate & Egg Liqueur and the Yogurt ones. And a few years ago they had a poppy seed one.

This one, the Apple & Cinnamon, the Plum & Rum, the Stracciatella or the double chocolate... I'm just admiring on the internet :))

My personal favourite out everything that I've tried so far was the Chocolate & Rum. The Classic ones were also nice. I wasn't too crazy about the Irish Coffee ones.

Phil said...

I can imagine how these taste, and to be honest it's not that appealing to me. I like fruit fondants but not when they're solid.
It's great to see a new brand though, it'll be interesting to see what other flavours they have.
I've tried Limoncello liquer before and it's very nice, not too strong as far as alcohol content. Aldi sell it I think.

Kevin said...

Boy I remember having something very similar to these years ago when I went to Germany. I don't remember them being that great but some of those flavours I see on that website @colin just posted look intriguing. Great find Jim.

Estelle said...

Kim is talking sense. When is that last time we saw a lemon flavoured chocolate?
I know these don't look like they are anything special but I would be willing to try them some day if only just to see what they taste like. I do like my fruity chocs :-)

Alan said...

These do appeal to me as I do like fruity chocs but not liquers so if teh alcohol elemnt is weak I think I'd enjoy them. I'll have to keep alook out in the pound shops and home bargains and such. Its the sort of thing they'd get probably. I see allsorts of interesting things in these shops, sometimes English chocs that just dont make it to the normal retail shelves because they already have so many lines lol

Ana said...

I guess I'm lucky. Growing up, there were always lemon/ orange chocolates around...

We get the Bohme chocolate bars (Bohme are also owned by Halloren) and they have a lemon one among them, you can see it in the picture on the left. Those aren't great, but... they're something with lemon.

Then we have a Romanian chocolate, Poiana Dark with Lemon Cream, which I love - it tastes just like the lemon-filled chocolate bars I used to get when I was little. It's funny that a lot of people hate it for the very same reason - they say those old chocolates were awful.

And there are combinations of lemon & mint, like the After Eight Lemon and another Romanian chocolate, Heidi Grand’Or Dark Mint & Lemon.

These are the ones I can think of right now...

Oh, and how could I forget... Leonidas! They have some lemon filled dark chocolates that are called "I Love You" - it's the third one from the left in this image.

James said...

Someone please please tell me where I could buy these in the UK?
I would love to buy these for my sister. She went to live out in germany for a year for university and halloren were her favourite chocolates. I've never been able to find them in this country though it would be nice to buy her some.

Nigel said...

Omg Jim I just saw the Rooney news on Sky Sports. You must be well pleased.

Gareth said...

I used to live in Halle where they come from and they were always a good present to take to people at home in the UK - cheap and quite good looking!

Apart from the original Sahne-Cacoa I prefer the Baumkuchen ones to be honest. Cakey, alcoholy, chocolately goodness in a little ball! Or the Köstritzer black beer and marzipan ones aren't bad either. It was nice having access to the factory shop with praline making bit!

Phil said...

@Alan - Home Bargains is great isn't it? I used to love shopping there, they have so many unusual foreign chocolates. My favourite was the Swiss Frey brand. They once did a rhubarb and aloe vera flavour white chocolate!

Selina said...

One thing I have started to notice about all these German chocolates is that they always make them look stunning.
These are so pretty with their multi coloured centres :) I think they are nice looking anyway.

Alan said...

@Phil, it is! I'll have to look out for that brand. I have noticed they seem to be stocking more UK products than perhaps previously, although they are considrably cheaper than at normal full shop prices. I have a feeling I've seen that Swiss Frey brand recently, but not sure if it was in Home Bargains or not lol.

B&M is another good shop. They often have wierd and wonderful foreign chocs. I once spotted a tin of Quality Street from some far flung place, ironically with a much nicer tin than ours!

Hi All,

It's always nice to feature a new brand on the site. It's great to see that there is a lot of interest in seeing some more Halloren reviews in the future ... I might have to call in some more favours from my German friends.

David - Re:'are they just exclusive to Germany?'

I don't think so. I think they have quite good presence across Europe ... just not in the UK unfortunately.

Rachel / Nigel - Re: Wikipedia/History Lessons

I would indeed be lost without Wiki, I openly admit that :D It's first port of call for me whenever I don't know anything.

Nick - Re:'They are another one of those German brands who feel the need to have a bazillion flavours.'

I never see having a lot of flavours as an issue as long as they don't replace the classic flavours they make. I wouldn't have a clue which of their flavours are the classics so I can't comment if Halloren are doing a good/bad job of their flavour rotation.

Kim / Estelle - Re:'Lemon flavoured chocolates'

You are right there are very few of them from the mass market brands. If you look hard enough you can find bars from people like Lindt or Hotel Chocolate and Ritter Sport ... they aren't the most accessible options though you are right in that sense.

Anne - Re:'I love the original Haloren Kugeln (the cacoa/cream)'

You seem to be quite knowledgable about their range, can you suggest say four flavours that you think I should review in the future please.

Anon - Re:'I will send you some more of the other flavours to see if you like them better'

Thank you that is a kind off but it is hard to know who to pass my thanks on to if your are anonymous haha :D

Andrew - Re:'please can I request that you just try out the original flavoured ones they make'

I'm interested in doing it, it's just a case of getting hold of them.

Roy - Re: Milka / Ritter Christmas 2010

Ritter - the reviews start November 1st :D

Milka - I haven't even see what they are going to have on offer yet. I will take a look at it all this weekend to see if there is anything that is worth getting on the site.

Anne - Re: Visiting their shop and Museum

That sounds like a great idea to me :D make sure you feel us in with all the details of what they have there (I'm guessing plenty of chocolates haha!!!) I'm glad my review has encouraged you to do this :D

Karen - Re:'Magnum Limoncello'

Thanks for the story I will include it in the news post tomorrow.

Richard / Colin - Re: Price ... again :D

Thanks for looking that up Colin.

I think that is a pretty cheap price for the amount you get don't you think? Like I said in the review I don't think they needed to include quite so many in the box either. Perhaps smaller boxes will be something for them to think about down the road.

Anon - Re: 'what other flavours will you be writing about? can I leave you the names of the ones I want to see?'

Yes please feel free. I want to review the ones you guys all want to see.

Jim said...

Gary - Re:'Why did you choose to try this flavour first?'

Because it was the one I got sent ... no other reason.

Ana - Re: Flavour advice

Thanks for the adivce on the flavors Ana. I certainly have the classics on my radar, they are obviosuly a must try because so many people have mentioned them today. I'm going to have to think of a way of getting some across to the UK, it seems a brand that everyone is interested in. You are right Apple and Cinnamon sounds intriguing.

Phil - Re: Your comment

Cool it's good to see you approve of me mixing it up with a new brand. Limoncello does sound like one of those dodgy liqueurs we used to use to make cocktails at Uni :D i've probably had it one evening and just not been aware haha!

Alan - Re: Pound Shops & Limoncello

Trust me these were so sweet the alcohol really didn't come through at all.

I'm intrigued by these pound shops you and Phil have near you. Unfortunately we don't seem to get these things down south. It's a shame as it sounds like you can get some interesting lines in there from time to time.

Ana - Re: Romanian Chocolates

Wow you do get some crazy flavoured chocolates. The ones I'm really liking the sound of are the After Eight Lemon! I don't think we have ever seen them in our country. Have you tried them?

James - Re: 'Someone please please tell me where I could buy these in the UK?'

As far as I'm aware we don't have them in the UK.

Nigel - Re: 'Rooney'

I'm not impressed by his behaviour at all. It seems like he was just doing anything to get the maximum amount of money possible. Crafty git.

Gareth - Re: Living in Germany'

You are indeed very lucky always living so close to all factories and chocolate outlets. Speaking of German chocolate I should be getting a new batch of bars from Zotter next week. It's going to be interesting to see the latest flavours those crazy guys have come up with :D

Phil - Re:'Swiss Frey brand. They once did a rhubarb and aloe vera flavour white chocolate!

Hold on a minute am I reading that right? Aloe Vera? :D :D

Selina - Re:'One thing I have started to notice about all these German chocolates is that they always make them look stunning.'

These are supposed to be a cheap German chocolate aswell, and they still take great care of making them look nice. I wish some more of our UK brands would do that.

Thanks for the comments everyone. If anyone has some thoughts in regards to what flavours they do/don't want to see reviewed please just drop another comment. Have great weekends - 7Days of Chocolate Reviews tomorrow.

Silly phone, tried twice earlier to post this... Nice review. These sound like they could be interesting if you manage to try an array of their flavours however, I'm not too keen on trying these. I really like lemon flavoured things but the type of centre is one I don't like. Just from the picture it looks too sugary and therefore, very sweet. I do like the look of the 2 tone filling though and it's always great to see yet another product I'm unfamiliar with.

Daisy said...

Sorry I'm late posting today Jim.

These don't really take my fancy to be honest. I've never been one to go for citrus flavours with chocolate, like orange, lime or lemon so I would happily let these pass. Some of the flavours Ana is talking about sound so nice though. I will take a look at some of the ones I want to see you review.

Thank you again for another lovely review.

Dx

Phil said...

Yep you read me right Jim haha. It was one of the most unusual chocolates I've tried so far.

Ana's post reminds me, we had the lemon After Eights out in the UK about 5 years ago. They also brought out an Irish Cream flavour.

SilentAngel said...

Hey Jim, let me knwo when u are looking for special flavors from Halloren. There are lots of other great flavor of them :)

Anne said...

Hi Jim,

yes I have sampled some of them but can't remember exactly which ones of the Kugeln.

But like I said in my original comment, I really like the original flavour (Halloren Kugeln Sahne-Cacao)which for me actually defines what Halloren Kugeln are. if you get a chance, you really shoudl give them a try! I would stay away from the fruit/joghurt combinations. The ones I have tried there, I didn't like, too sweet and artificial. The only one I would love to sample out of curiousity would be Sanddorn-Joghurt (sea buckthorn) as I really like that berry and Pflaume-Rum (plum and rum) sound great too as well as Scharzwälder Kirsch (blackforest cherry). You would porbably also be interested in the Schoko-Caramel :-).

Of the non Kugel products I have tried the Dessert Träume chocolates. They weren't as suberb as the Hotel Chocolat dessert chocolate box but still very nice.

And one of my favourite Christmas treats are chocolates made with Baumkuchen (a wonderful cake, the very best of which you can buy near where my parents live, wonderful stuff http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baumkuchen). So the Baumkuchen Kugeln from Halloren might be worth a try too! :-)

Now I am afraid a lot of the stuff isn't that easy to find, even in supermarkets in eastern Germany. But if I do visit their shop/museum ofer Christmas, i should be able to find some of their more exotic stuff. :-)
