October 25th: Kit Kat Senses Caramel Cream

Kcal 165 Fat 9.5g Carbs 18.2g

Back at the beginning of September Nestle announced to the trade that they would be overhauling it's Kit Kat Senses bar by introducing a "new caramel filling to replace the existing hazelnut flavour" (Review of that bar HERE). When I read this I immediatedly thought this all sounded remarkably like the action they took last year to remove the Kit Kat Chunky Peanut and replace it with the Kit Kat Chunky Caramel. The reasoning provided by Nestle for this latest switch is that they believe that "the popularity of caramel flavours among women will open Kit Kat Senses Caramel Cream to a wider female fan base, and accelerate the £33m sales that the brand has achieved since launching in 2008". After a few weeks of searching I finally found this new Kit Kat Senses Caramel Cream on sale in my local convenience store for £0.49.

This new Caramel Cream variant came in a 30.7g size and came described as 'crisp wafer finger with a caramel flavoured creamy topping, covered in milk chocolate'. First impressions of the wrapper were very positive and I loved the new matted foil material which I thought gave the pack great standard with it's golden, orangey colour scheme. Out of the packet the chocolate finger piece looked no different to the original Kit Kat Senses bar, though when bitten in to the filling was noticeably more gold tinted in colour. Taking in the smells on offer from the bar I was instanlty reminded of my experience with the Chunky Caramel, with a promising set of burnt sugar caramel notes proving an appetising prospect.

Whatever I have said about the quality of some of the poorer Kit Kat flavour combinations in the past, one thing I have never criticised is the deliciousness of the classic milk chocolate and wafer constituents. Although both of these elements came substantially less portioned in the Senses bar, the synergy of the milky sweet chocolate and biscuit flavours was still very much there and delivered with the usual crisp wafer and smooth melting chocolate textures. So how good was the 'new' caramel cream filling!? Well as you could have guessed it wasn't 'new' in any sense - it was just simply the same paste like, overly sweet substance used for the Kit Kat Caramel Chunky. Unfortunately making matters slightly worse than with that bar, the wafer and chocolate elements were obviously less dillutive of the sugar focused flavours of the creme due to them being significantly lesser portioned. Resultingly this meant that the taste quickly became very one dimensional and throat searingly sweet after only a few of the five blocks.

Overall you are probably thinking that I'm going to say I was disappointed by this bar, but the truth is that I totally expected to be writing a review such as this one. Back in 2009 and when we all learnt the Kit Kat Chunky Peanut would be replaced by the Caramel variant, hopes were high that it would reach the high standard sets by the very same bar available in Australia (See HERE). When that bar arrived in the UK, I and many others felt very underwhelmed (miffed more like!) by the quality of the caramel filling, which by most accounts was considered pretty poor. Now, although it retained all the attributes I disliked from the Chunky bar format, at least this time it wasn't such a nasty surprise. To be totally frank I didn't enjoy this new Senses Caramel Cream and I probably wouldn't buy it again. One thing that does frustrate me somewhat is that Nestle have reduced the variety that their range offers again by cutting out a hazelnut flavour option for what is simply just another poorer caramel alternative. Let me throw the question to you guys ... What do you all think of this latest change to the Senses range?

I never sampled the hazelnut variety but even so, it just doesn't make sense to me whatsoever to replace a not so common flavour (hazelnut) with one to be found in so many bars (caramel). I know caramel is popular, but seriously, variety is a good thing. Amd if they haven't even bothered to make their caramel in UK bars a good quality, then what's the point?

The chances of me buying the Senses bar at some stage were actually higher before they made this change....

Ana said...

This is probably going to end up sounding like we always like better what we don't have than what we have...

We get only the Hazelnut Senses and oh, how would I be delighted to hear it gets replaced by a Caramel Senses... Of course, gooey caramel, please! Not a paste...

[Of course, I cannot speak for all girls... but, personally, between caramel and hazelnut, I'd chose caramel. Gooey caramel, of course.]

David said...

So let me get this straight ..... they just made exactly the same bar as the chunky caramel but made it with less chocolate and less wafer?
Lol that doesn't sound like its going to be a winner for me. I will try it because its new but I doubt it will do anything for me. Thanks for the review.

Rachel said...

Oh no this is sad news :( I had no idea that because they were bringing out this caramel flavour they were getting rid of the normal one. I just thought they were bringing it out aswell as the old one.

I will have to go buy a stock of the hazelnut one now booo

I've tried this and I don't think it is half as bad as you say. I was never adverse to the chunky version of it before so its not as if I was going to ever dislike it anyway.
I share your disappointment about taking away the normal one though. That is a puzzling decision.

Gary said...

It's hard to believe that some of these bars you review aren't very good when you dress them up so nicely for your photos ;) I think I will try this when I see it but I wont be expecting much after reading your review about it. The caramel doesn't sound very nice at all.

Steven_F said...

Why do Nestle not just make the caramel soft like you get in the likes of cadbury etc? Whats the point making a caramel cream at all? I would have thought that it would be more expensive to make that then just go for a cheaper normal one. brggggggh annoying.

Kim said...

Thank you for the review Jim I was wondering when you would get around to reviewing this. I have bought a few since it came out a few weeks ago and I personally think it's ok. I like the fact it doesn't have that many calories for a chocolate bar. I hadn't look at the fat level though, that is still pretty high for a bar so small. Lol they hide that detail well.

Anonymous said...

Lush photos!!! I want one right now ;-)

Ryan said...

Part of me thinks they did this to block off the launch of the Twix fino.
Before they didn't have many competitors for this part of the markey (maybe the bueno with the hazelnut bit), but now they have the fino to deal with perhaps they thought they should switch it to caramel so they give women that option? Just a thought.

Henry said...

Cool review Jim. I haven't bought one yet because I wanted to see what you said about it before I did. Because its so cheap I think I will still give it a try but my expectations are pretty low after seeing the score you gave it. It's a shame Nestle couldn't come up with something more original for once.

Nick said...

Nice one Jimbo loving the new product mondays :)

Can i just ask what the 10p donation thing is all about? I can see it on the wrapper but can't make out the smaller details. BTW is this a double finger bar or is that just two different packs? Im assuming its two packs lol?

Estelle said...

What??????? They are taking away the normal Senses? This I did not know!!

That is such a rubbish thing for them to do. Not everyone likes caramel, why take away a decent alternative for people that are sick to death of endless caramel chocolate bars. Grr this makes me so cross.

Nigel said...

I didn't do to well with my pedictions again yesterday did I Jim? Lol it might be a tatic to put money on exactly the opposite from what I say lol.

As for this caramel senses bar its not one I will be rushing out to buy. I think I might feel a little embarrassed buying it to be honest. The senses is such a female inclined product, it feels a little silly a 20 yr old bloke buying it lol. I will have to get a diet coke at the same time :)

Mark said...

I think this is a fair review, I like that you haven't been overly critical for once. I thought you were going to tee off against Nestle again.

Warren said...

Kit Kat are really scrapping the barrel on the fresh ideas front. If I wanted a smaller version of the normal caramel I would just eat half? Theres no need for them to make a portion controlled version, the average person isn't that dumb.

Golden_Touch said...

Jim you are a bit hard on these Kit Kat caramels I think. I don't think they are bad at all myself, I would happily eat any of them if you gave them to me.
I do get your point that they aren't as good as the more traditional caramels like galaxy, but I wouldn't say they are half as bad as you accuse them of being. Thats just my opinion.

Kevin said...

Where are you all buying them from? I have been looking to buy one for weeks now but I haven't had any luck at all :(

I keep checking my local supermarkets but I aint seen nowt yet :(

Anonymous said...

One thing you haven't mentioned Jim is the 10p donation that Kit Kat are making to breast cancer charities everytime you buy one of these bars. Surely that is a good enough cause for you to encourage people to buy at least one to support those charities?

Obviously not since you dont even care to mention it at all in your review. I thought you were better than that.

Richard said...

Hmmm this doesn't sound promising but I wont bulk at trying it at that price. Its funny because 49p is pretty cheap for a newly launched bar.

I had to pay in excess of 65p for both the cadburys bliss and twix fino bars recently. My local newsagents can be a right rip off. Thank you for the honest review jim.

Beth said...

How can they call that a caramel filling? It looks like a disgusting goo in your photos ewwwww.

Alicia said...

Its a real shame to hear they are removing the normal nutty senses because it has always been one of my faves.

I like the senses bars because they dont have half as many calories as the bigger chunky bars. I think they are just about the right amount aswell.

Andrew said...

God what is the point of even making this bar? It's just another instance of a company trying to make out there are doing something new and interesting when in actual fact they are just rebranding a product that they already make. Sigh, you cant trust anyone these days.

Alex said...

Oh what a surprise Jim rates another nestle product low. You are making this all way to obvious now. I would be a bit more tactful if I were you.

Tricky said...

Am I missing something here? You say you disliked it even more than the caramel chunky because it was less satisfying, yet it has somehow managed to get the same score? Am I mistaken?

Andy said...

Its hardly a surprise they are getting rid of the hazelnut one. It was never as good as the kinder bueno. I can imagine it didn't sell half as many as that bar ever did.

I think @ryan has a point about this one being brought in to cotend with the Fino. That would make perfect sense (excuse the pun lol)

Simon said...

Great review Jim I think this is a honest run down of this bar.

I have never understood why Nestle didn't just make it with a normal caramel rather than this caramel creme rubbish. Like you say it gets really sickly, very fast. I can't see myself buy it again lol one was enough.

Gareth said...

I had one yesterday and thought it was ok, but there seems to be almost a cinnamon taste off the caramel. I found that a bit odd.

Justin said...

Nice pics today Jim you can plainly see that the caramel bit is exactly the same as it is in the chunky bar. It's a damn shame that nestle persist making these annoying caramel bars with cream instead of just normal stuff. Lets hope they learn one day.

Colin said...

Cool review. Its a shame to see they couldn't have learnt from their mistake with the chunky bar though.
I'm yet to meet a single person that actually likes any of these caramel kit kats. I think the best out of them all are caramel flavoured fingers you buy in two packs in the supermarket. Apart from that they are just rubbish.

Thea said...

"the popularity of caramel flavours among women will open Kit Kat Senses Caramel Cream to a wider female fan base..." well they epically failed with me, I like caramel but thought this was way too sweet :( then again maybe I'm atypical cause I've never bought a Diet Coke, either... lol@Nigel :)
@Kevin I think I found this in a One Stop. Also, I don't remember seeing the 10p donation part on the wrapper, I thought I must be imagining it at first but found this pic on Foodstuff Finds:

I tried my bar yesterda and felt exactly the same lol. Tbh teh original Senses bar isn'tone I ever rememeber trying, not because I thought it too feminie or anything liek that (I don't understand that whole idea about a bar being seen as too feminine for a guy to buy?)but because it never really appealed to me as a product. This one mightve if it had ben decent, but then since its the same as the Caramel Chunky its a bit pointless. That was equally horrible. I don't understand Nestle atall at the mo! They couldve filled it with the caramel used in a Toffee Crisp.

@Colin, you like those finger caramel ones? urgh I think theyre horrible as well lol

Claire said...

I didn't think it was to bad at all when I tried it. I'm not sure it was necessarilly my favourite chocolate bar ever but I dont think it is as bad as most people are making it out to be. There isn't anything offensive about it, nothing tastes disgusting or anything.

Phil said...

At last, my chance to say how rubbish I think this is :D

To be fair it's not dreadful, it's just so boring and pointless. What I couldn't understand was why it tastes exactly the same as the KK chunky caramel, but smaller. I mean they've essentially released the same product. It just seems...stupid.
I also don't get why Nestle are incapable of using normal caramel. Imagine if they did a Kitkat with a layer of Cadbury style caramel, it'd be out of this world.

@Alex - do you work for Nestle or something? You're always moaning about their low ratings.

Phil said...

@Ana - I agree! I would also choose runny caramel over hazelnut. But this paste they use shouldn't even be allowed to bear the name caramel.

Off-topic, but I think in European countries hazelnut is a more common flavour than it is in the UK.

Alex said...

@Jim In addition to my earlier comment. If you knew you weren't going to like it, why did you bother reviewing it? You always say yourself that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it. I've got you there.

Back at the beginning of September Nestle announced to the trade that they would be overhauling it's Kit Kat Senses bar by introducing a "new caramel filling to replace the existing hazelnut flavour"

Seriosuly who in their right mind thought that was a good idea. Why are Nestle so obessed with taking away any sort of choice for us people :(

I and many others felt very underwhelmed (miffed more like!) by the quality of the caramel filling, which by most accounts was considered pretty poor. Now, although it retained all the attributes I disliked from the Chunky bar format, at least this time it wasn't such a nasty surprise. To be totally frank I didn't enjoy this new Senses Caramel Cream and I probably wouldn't buy it again.

Well that sums it all up quite nicely for us. I will try it some day just to see what I think, if it is just like the caramel chunky I know I'm not going to like it though.

Chris said...

I hate moaning about things but this is just silly. What is the point making this even? It's neither new or exciting and it's not fooling anyone. I didn't like the caramel chunky when I tried it so I shan't be bothering with this if it's just the same but smaller. Nestle need to get their heads screwed on.

Ria said...

Thanks for the review, have been looking forward to it since I tried the bar myself. The first piece I ate, I nibbled the chocolate off and then ate the paste stuff. It definitely tasted of caramel but as you say, extremely sweet and slightly artificial (but then again it's not actual caramel is it?). After this first piece I then ate them 1/2 at a time or whole and it didn't seem too bad. The caramel was much more muted however, I think this was because of how I ate the initial piece. Anything would have seemed less sweet than that!

As I said back when you posted the story, they should have just stuck with the Hazelnut variant. If they were going to introduce caramel then it should have been as an expansion of the product and they should have used real caramel.

Alan said...

@ Alex - seriously, you talk about some obsession Jim supposedly has with rating Nestle products low - but have you thought - why do you have an obsession with thinking this?? I've never come across anyone quite like you in my life lol

As for having 'got him there', what are you on about? Just because someone thinks they wont like a product doent mean they wont try it just to see. I did and I wasnt that fussed by it, but hey, thats life.

Anyone noticed Alex never responds to these responses to his comments?

Kieran said...

I'm not sure I can even be bothered to try this so called new product. What a joke.

Do kit kat really think people are going to be excited by this? It just goes to show that you can dress something up in a nice new wrapper but if its a crap product, its a crap product. Shame that.

Lauren said...

Hmph. Taking out another flavour is soooooooo wrong of them. You got think they are just making cost savings taking away the hazelnut filling. I guess from their perspective it logistically will be a lot simpler if they just use the same filling across two bars.

Linz said...

Bit harsh Jim. It's not exactly groundbreaking or spectacular but I thought it was rather nice. Would I buy it again? Maybe... it's a bit ordinary but still a tasty chocolatey treat. I'm a bit miffed you thought it was too sweet though, I thought the creme was thinly proportioned enough that it wasn't ever sickly. In fact I could have done with it being a tad bigger! Have you ever tried homemade Scottish tablet? That is a real test of sweetness tolerance! It's immense :)

Hi All,

Great to see so many people have an opinion on matters today ... I honestly wouldn't know where to begin answering your questions ... here is an attempt to do so, if I miss you out I apologise! I have read your comment but there are only so many people can I respond to.

Anne / Ana / David / Rachel / Sam / Estelle / Alicia / Andrew / Katie / Matt / Chris / Kieran / Lauren - Re:'Replacing the Hazelnut with the Caramel bar'.

The main issue of conflict today eh ....

I can see both sides of the arguement to be honest. I can see the arguement Nestle make that caramel is probably more universally popular than a nut version, and I can also see that they must be pushed for shelf space already so perhaps the only option was 'one-in,one-out'.

On the other side of the fence I can see the whole arguement about them limiting options, it's not ideal from a consumer perspective. I am a lot more fussed about them taking away the Peanut Chunky if I'm totally honest. That was just a criminal decision which ever way you look at it.

Steven / Ana - Re: 'Why do Nestle not just make the caramel soft like you get in the likes of cadbury etc?'

I wish I could answer this question. I just really don't know to be honest. It still puzzles me.

Kim - Re:'I hadn't look at the fat level though, that is still pretty high for a bar so small. Lol they hide that detail well.'

The fat content isn't that shocking. To be hones that is the least of this bars problems.

Nick - Re:'Can i just ask what the 10p donation thing is all about?'

Inside the wrapper you get a code you have to enter online. Once you do that Kit Kat donate 10p to breast cancer charities. It's a nice thing to do, but you have to think that a large majority of people wont bother going to the hassle of going online. They should have just made a 5p donation from the RRP.

Nigel - 'I didn't do to well with my pedictions again yesterday did I Jim?'

No you didn't matey. I wont be taking betting tips off you haha!

Alex / Mark - Re:'Criticising Nestle'

Guys I have no idea where you have dreamt up that I hold something against Nestle as a corporation. The only issue I have with Nestle is the way they executed this particular product - I don't like it SIMPLE!! I have nothing against any corporation, I treat products as products ... not products created by companies. Please get that into your brains and stop bloody moaning haha :D

Golden - Re: 'I wouldn't say they are half as bad as you accuse them of being. Thats just my opinion'

It's just my opinion chap. I see it as no more or less relevant than your own believe me.

Kevin - Re: 'Where are you all buying them from?'

I bought mine from OneStop ... can anyone else suggest some sources for Kev

Richard - Re:'49p is pretty cheap for a newly launched bar'

Indeed it wasn't a bad price to pay. They do love to ramp up the price of these new products when they first launch. To be honest it makes sense business wise from the company perspective.

Jim said...

Tricky - Re: 'Am I missing something here? You say you disliked it even more than the caramel chunky because it was less satisfying, yet it has somehow managed to get the same score? Am I mistaken?'

What it lacked in size it made up for with it's new snazzy looking wrapper. Trust me the wrapper is very cool. They should make all the Kit Kat wrappers from that material.

Ryan / Andy - Re: Contending with the Twix Fino

Whilst that sounds like a sensible theory both bars were announced around the same time. I think it might just be a coincedence to be perfectly honest.

Gareth - Re: Your comment

Would you buy it again?

Thea - Re: Your comment

It sounds like you weren't much of a fan either then :D I think the guys were just joking around regarding the diet coke comment. It is funny the amount of women I see around my office who drink diet coke, yet tuck in to several chocolate bars a day haha! Thanks for the link.

Alan - Re: Your comment

I agree about the toffee crisp thing. Why didn't they just call it the Kit Kat Toffee and made them with the same stuff ... that would have been even more efficent if its cost savings they are trying to make?
They must genuinely think that the caramel cream stuff is better than normal caramel. If the people who leave comments on this website are anything to go by it would seem the majority disagree.

Phil - Re: Your Comment

Haha you have obviously been waiting for the opportunity to do this my friend. I agree whole heartidly with all your points, though I restrained myself from being quite as open as yourself to avoid the idiots accusing me of holding someting against anyone (sadly that didn't work huh!?).
I really do wish they would just make it the same as the Aussie Kit Kat Caramel Chunkys I had a few months ago. I can't tell you how many times better they were.

Alex - Re:'@Jim In addition to my earlier comment. If you knew you weren't going to like it, why did you bother reviewing it?'

A) People requested I do so
B) I was interested to see if it was what I thought it was going to be.
C) 6.9 out of 10 is hardly a travesity. It's hardly a score that suggests it's inedible.

Ria - Re: Your comment / Package

Firstly thank you so much for the package you sent me :D It arrived today! I'm very humble by the extra bits you put in there ;) I will be writing a review on them for sure.

Your experience with this bar closely aligns with me own. I tried eating the caramel bit on it's own and with the wafer and it was frankly just as bad in any situation. It's just a little poor isn't it.

Wow that was a lot of comments. Thank you all for adding your thoughts and opinions. If any more of you get to try this bar please be sure to add your own 2 cents.

Awesome review Jim. I did have concerns that this was just going to be the same as the chunky caramel. Seemingly now they are now confirmed :( I don't understand why they insist on making the crappy caramel they do. Like ana I prefer soft caramels.

Eric said...

Does anyone elses bar say produced in Bulgaria? What a random place for Nestle to make them.

Ria said...

Glad to hear it arrived ok Jim and you liked the addition. Look forward to your reviews ;)

@Eric I didn't pay any attention to where it said the was made but I'll definitely have a nosey next time I see one. Bulgaria certainly does seem random!

Mysterio6_19 said...

This doesn't even sound worth trying. Kit Kat have got so lazy with their flavours now. Boring boring kit kats.

Thea said...

lol update: these are on sale en masse in my local OneStop, and I mean heaps and heaps and heaps, I guess the lack of sales eventually caught up with them and they're swamped!!

BJ said...

I really don't see the point of this bar. It's practically the same as the Caramel Crunchy, just not as textually satisfying. It tastes nice, but...what's the point in remaking the same product?
