October 28th: Hotel Chocolat Midnight Mints Selection

As soon as Christmas time rolls around it seems like the market suddenly gets flooded with countless numbers of chocolate mint products. Nestle After Eights, Mingles, Elizabeth Shaw Mint Crisp etc are just a few of the more popular options I can name off the top of my head. What about the fancier market offerings I hear you ask? Well today I got to try this rather classy looking Midnight Mint Selection from my favourite people at Hotel Chocolat.

This selection came described as 'recipes celebrating that most British preoccupation: mint and chocolate' and contained 'four classic mint chocolates in dark and white chocolate'. The entire box weighed in at 230.0g and contained two trays with the 26 individual chocolates within. The presentation of the product was fully what you would expect from Hotel Chocolat with the outer box well designed and premium looking, and the inner chocolates nicely crafted and decorated. As impressive as this all was, what was most notable about this Midnight Mint Selection were the minty aromas that sprung across my senses as soon as soon as the plastic packet film wrap was stripped away from the box - boy did they smell gorgeous.

Below are my thoughts on each of the different pieces. Ratings from Abysmal to Superb.

Mint Fondants - This was a piece that was formed of a firm mint fondant centre which was coated in a very thin layer of dark chocolate. Having tasted a great deal of sugary fondants in my life time I was surprised by the creamyness of the delicious peppermint flavours generated by the centre, though I would have liked the dark chocolate coating could have been just a touch thicker. My parents said these tasted like 'posh Fry's mint fondants'. Good.

Mint Batons - As you can see these batons came in two different varieties, one with 72% dark chocolate and the other 28% white chocolate. On the whole both were pretty nice, however I more enjoyed the dark chocolate as I thought the balance between the non-sweet chocolate and the sweet 'essence of Tasmanian peppermint' (no seriously not a joke!!) was just a bit better. My white chocolate loving sister thought exactly the opposite :D Very Good.

Mint Cremes - Although these turned out to be my favourites from the selection I did have some minor worries before tasting them as they looked exactly like the awful Parma Violet Hotel Chocolat chocolates I once tried. These pieces had gorgeous tasting softer peppermint fondant centres, which were cased in thick layers of dark chocolate. The combination of these both made for a refreshing, rich tasting chocolate that was really in a class of it's own. Superb.

Peppermint Crisps - At first I was very surprised that these were the same type of chocolate, as the white variation was nearly twice the thickness of the dark one. These pieces included praline centres with small pieces of peppermint crystals and puffed rice, which together all made for a very interesting textured chocolate. Taste wise, again the dark chocolate variation was more to my liking, the white chocolate piece was just a little on the sweet side in my opinion. I'm being overly critical again - the rest of my family were more inclined to the white chocolate ones :D Very Good.

Overall this was yet another superb collection of chocolates from Hotel Chocolat and I'm sure they would go down a storm with anyone looking for an extra special collection of mint chocolates this Christmas period. As you can tell by my ratings above the real standout chocolates for me personally were the Mint Cremes. I honestly think they are one of the best mint chocolates I have ever tasted and that is no small claim. For a brief time I was struggling with the score I was going this product for the 'selection' crtieria. At first I thought only having four different pieces was pretty limited, but on reflection I struggled to think of any other type of mint chocolate they could have included, so I think an average score of 7.0 is more than justified. As for the rest of the product everything else was very much better than average which isn't exactly a surprise when it comes to Hotel Chocolat. If you are a chocolate mint fan then I suggest you treat yourself to one of these Midnight Mint Selections - I can promise you wont regret it.

I was beginning to believe you didn't like mint and chocolate because you never wrote an revies about them lol. It looks like your rating for this suggests I was a bit wrong there :) Thanks for the review Jim. My sis loves minty chocs so this could well be something I buy for her sometime.

Omg I have such a soft spot for mint patty chocolates. The mint cremes sound like my ultimate dream chocolate (well close I would prefer milk choc). If I ever got this box I would make a beeline for them before any other greedy bugger could get them lol. Thank you for another wonderful post.

I thought Hotel Chocolat reviews were only allowed to be posted on Mondays? Oh well it's a nice surprise to see them again, it's been way too long since you last wrote about one of their boxes. Please do more if you can, they have a load of new ones up on their website.

These look v. tasty mmmmmm. The only one of the set that I'm not too sure about is the peppermint crisp one. I'm no fan of nut and I can't imagine nut and mint working in one chocolate - isn't that trying to hard to put different ingredients together?
The rest look fab though and I like how they mixed it up with dark and white chocolate. Its another for my list.

Those mint fondants look amaze. Weren't we just saying the other day how manufacturers have given up making them these days. I bet hotel chocolate would make the most amazing fondants ever. It's a shame what you say about the chocolate on that piece though, you can see its paper thin in your picture. Good review thank you.

They put the chocolate sticks in almost every selection mix they make. They could try being a little different from all of their other boxes.

This will come out as really random but this review has got me thinking. Why didn't nestle make the new senses bar have a mint filling instead of a caramel one? Mint and chocolate is well popular, just as much as caramel, but theres currently no competition out there.

There are hundreds of caramel bars but no mint ones from cadburys etc. Just an idea I thought I would throw out there.

This is way too tasty looking for me to be looking at this time in the morning :( Mint chocolates are so hard to come by nowadays its tres frustrating.

I obviously haven't tasted these but I imagine the mint creme and mint batons would be my faves.

Are you sure we aren't related? Seriously if we are I think you need to start sending me some of your chocolates. If I were you I would share any of my chocolates :-)

Great review mate I've been looking for a half decent mint selection for yonks now.

Someone has said this above but isn't it funny how there are no mint chocolates out nowadays. You can buy after eights all over the place, but there isn't like one mint chocolate bar I can think of that you can buy with ease. I bet Hotel Chocolat do a right job with these, I would love to try them.

Paul said...

The scores are so high this week, you must have been in a good mood when you were writing all of these lol.

@colin Jim said yesterday that the senses bar took over on monday and he had to push this one back. I think that is why he posted it today anyway. I say the more hotel chocolate the better :-)

If you took out the fondant ones I would be sold on these. There is something about fondants that make me feel instantly sick. I think it is because they remind me of that awful Kendall mint cake stuff. I was forced to eat that when I went on a camping trip once. The thought of it alone makes me shudder.

Hotel Chocolat Thursday? Lol I'm not complaining I love it.

It's brilliant to finally find myself a mint assortment that has all different sorts of mint chocolates. Normally when you buy things like the elizabeth shaw or after eights you just get a boring choice of just one type. These look nicely varied to me.

Thank you jim.

Linda said...

Oh this is just too cruel. I was all excited about these until I saw the mint pralines.
They mean I can't ever buy these because there are nuts in them. My kids have nut allergies so I couldn't have these in the house.

How awfully annoying, they look and sound delicious.

Warren said...

Outstanding photos jim especially of the last ones. Why do you think they make the white chocolate one of those pralines double the size? You can see its like twice as chunky.

I think my other favourites would be the batons. Im a sucker for any sort of dark chocolate with mint in.

Lauren said...

This just reminds me of how poorer off we are without the wispa mint. Do you think they will ever bring it back one day like they did for the wispa gold? Now that would be massive news if they ever did it.
I dont think for one minute the wispa mint would be better than these , but this is hotel chocolat so they should be better lol.

Karen said...

Do you have to tease us with hotel chocolat every week? No really, do you have to?

Everytime you post something about hotel chocolat I waste hours on their website dreaming about all the chocolates I would buy if my bank balance allowed it :)

Last week I treated myself to some of their new tiddly santa chocolates....... yes I am eating christmas chocolate already lol.

Tracey said...

You forgot to mention the endless amount of supermarket mint chocolates you can buy at christmas time. Last year we got some tesco finest after eight rip offs which were disgusting.

I think this year I might invest in a posh box of chocolates like this. Sometimes it is worth just paying a bit more money for quality.

Good review these are one I will have to look out for next time I go to Hotel Choc. You sure have tried loads of what they make now.

John said...

The best chocolate mints I have ever tasted were the homemade dark chocolate fondants that my gran used to make.

She used to make hundreds of things every christmas and give them out to all of our family. She was such a legend.

Nathan said...

What hotel choclat products are you going to be reviewing from their christmas line up? I got so many things I want to see reviewed but I dont want to wait to long as they go out of stock mega quick.

Come on Jim lad get on the case for us all lol.

Michael said...

These are a must buy for me. Are you sure they still sell them? I can't for the life of me find them on their website. They need to sort that out its way too confusing to navigate.

David said...

Cool review Jim thanks for bringing our attention to this one. I dont like chocolate mints but I know they are popular amongst many others so this looks like a nice chocolate box for giving as presents for them.

btw I had my first screme egg yesterday. If you still cant find one I wouldn't worry too much about it. Its just the same as normal creme egg. No different at all.

David said...

Speaking of companies that have initials HC!!! when are the next heavenly cake reviews coming? You said you got sent stuff by them ages ago.

sorry for the double post.

Martin said...

This looks like a really yummy set of minty chocs. They way they have assorted it with different chocolate types is really clever, you never see white and dark chocolate mixed together so much.

Hollie said...

I cant say Im surprised to see such a high rating these do look absolutely terrific.

Mint chocolates aren't something I have ever been crazy about but these look the biz. Thanks for the review.

Adrian said...

Forget these. Mingles are where its at folks.

Phil said...

Now these sound lovely :) I'm not a big fan of After Eights, never have been, but I do like a good quality mint fondant. The hard one doesn't appeal to me much, though it sounds like it avoids the usual pitfall of being too sweet. The mint creme sounds more up my street.
The batons look nice, reminds me of the Bendicks white chocolate mints I had once, which were by far the best mint chocolates I've ever tasted. Looking on their website they seem to have been discontinued :( They were seriously good.

Anyway, good review Jim! Always great to see Hotel Chocolat on here. I've got a box of their tasting club chocolates arriving soon, and some of them sound amazing, especially "Caramel cheesecake" and "Mocha truffle".

Justin said...

Oh what a surprise Hotel Chocolat lighting up the scoring system again.

Are you going to be doing awards this year? I can see hotel chocolat taking a load of your awards if you do so.

Ben said...

York peppermint patties are my favourite mint chocoles but they dont sell them in the UK.

Hotel Chocolat are in a league of their own but their produce is just to damn expensive. Take these for instance, they cost £14 on their website and that is before everything like postage. I think in their actual shops they will costs upwards of £20. How can anyone think of spending that much money on chocolates?

Kimberly said...

Jim have you ever tried the peppermint puddles that Hotel Chocolat make? omg they are amazing.

I dont normally like dark chocolate but the mint bit gives them a nice touch of sweetness.

Ria said...

Really pleased to see you review these as they stood out above anything else in the Christmas catalogue. They look amazing and your photos make these look even more brilliant.I love the dark, white and green colour mix. Glad to see that taste wise, they are definitely no let down. I was already thinking about giving these a try but now you've actually encouraged us to treat ourselves there's no hope of resistance! My pockets hate you! Only joking, thanks for fab review again.

Hi All,

Sorry if I have caused mass confusion with the posting of a Hotel Chocolat review not on a Monday :D It looks like most of you got over the initial shock judging by some of your comments regarding how nice the selection looks :D

Sorry if my responses are brief tonight I'm awfully snowed under at work.

Nick - Re: I was beginning to believe you didn't like mint and chocolate because you never wrote an reviews about them

No way I like them. Its just there aren't that many mint chocolate products on the market now.

Colin / Sally - Re:'I thought Hotel Chocolat reviews were only allowed to be posted on Mondays?'

As I said above sorry for the confusion. I thought you all might like to see it asap rather than delay it a full week though.

Kim - Re: Nut & Mint

It isn't a pairing you see put together all that comonlly but they did alright with it here. The mint overan the nut as you can imagine.

Golden - Re: Fondants

No there aren't that many fondants around anymore are there. Fry's bars are still reasonably good if you can find them though. They are in pretty poor distribution these days though.

Paul - Re:'Why didn't nestle make the new senses bar have a mint filling instead of a caramel one?

I really like that idea. A mint creme filling instead of a caramel one would of probably of been just as popular. It also would have been something totally new to the market aswell. I think they missed a trick there.

Katie - Re:'Are you sure we aren't related?'

Haha! My family do help me out with the photography etc sometimes so they don't get it all plain sailing. It's always well handy for me to get second opinions on these products.

Nigel - Re: Great review mate I've been looking for a half decent mint selection for yonks now.

Thanks for the nice words. You needn't look much further if you really are after a decent mint selection.

Paul - Re:'The scores are so high this week, you must have been in a good mood when you were writing all of these lol.'

Either that or the product quality has been high.

Linda - Re:'My kids have nut allergies so I couldn't have these in the house.'

That is a damn shame isn't it. The allergy thing must really limit what you can/can't have in your household. I really feel for you.

Warren - Re:'Why do you think they make the white chocolate one of those pralines double the size?'

I have absolutely no idea :D We would have to asked HC themselves for an answer for that.

Lauren - Re:'This just reminds me of how poorer off we are without the wispa mint. Do you think they will ever bring it back one day like they did for the wispa gold?'

The Wispa Mint making a return? I really hope so one day. You would have thought that it would be the next one to come back out of the old range. Fingers crossed eh!

Karen - Re:'Do you have to tease us with hotel chocolat every week? No really, do you have to?'

Oh dear you wont be liking the site for the run up to Christmas :D it is going to be dominated by Hotel Chocolat for the forseeable future .... well not dominated but there will be at least one review a week.

Jim said...

John - Re:'The best chocolate mints I have ever tasted were the homemade dark chocolate fondants that my gran used to make.'

They sound intriguing. I bet they were delicious.

Nathan - Re:'What hotel choclat products are you going to be reviewing from their christmas line up?'

I couldn't possibly spoil the surprise for you :D Suffice to say my coverage is going to be very extensive.

Michael - Re:'Are you sure they still sell them?'

If you search mint on the website they come up as the first result haha :D

David - Re:'Speaking of companies that have initials HC!!! when are the next heavenly cake reviews coming?'

In good time my friend :D please be patient. They should be up in the next weeks up until Christmas time.

Adrian - Re:'Mingles are where its at folks'

I've not tried Mingles before. Perhaps I will do soon ;D

Phil - Re: Your comment

Those chocolates you inbound sound fantastic. I think both of those are included in the Christmas selection so it will be great if you can share what you think about them.

If you do fancy your mint selection boxes then I honeslty whole heartidly recommend this one. I think you would really enjoy it.

Justin - Re:'Are you going to be doing awards this year?'

Yep - they will fall after Christmas this year though.

Ben - Re:' How can anyone think of spending that much money on chocolates?

Are you sure your name isn't Richard haha :D :D

Only joking. Hotel Chocolat isn't a brand anyone would buy everyday. Its a brand you should buy as a treat for someone. I think we would all go bankrupt if we made them an everyday purchase ... well I would anyway haha :D

Kimberly - Re:'Jim have you ever tried the peppermint puddles that Hotel Chocolat make?'

No I haven't actually. I will stick them on the 'to review list' for the future.

Ria - Re: Your comment

Really? These appealed to you the most? Boy well I needn't bother with the 15 odd other Christmas reviews I have lined up HC now then haha :D No don't worry I still think I will get stuck in them. Don't worry if you read my reviews you might be able to save your pockets if you just pick and choose the stuff that sounds best .... hopefully I wont say that everything is superb then.

Thanks for the comments and feedback everyone. I hope you are all looking forward to the incoming HC christmas reviews that are coming up on the site soon. Their range is might impressive I have to say.
