October 8th: Galler Praline Aux Noix

Kcal 549 Fat 38.3g Fat(sats) 20.2g Carbs 45.0g (per 100.0g)

After reviewing both of Galler's white and milk chocolate praline bar offerings it would have been just rude of me to not to go full circle and take a look at their dark chocolate praline option. To set the context, in my review of the Galler Praline Blanc I commented that it was 'a very accomplished praline based white chocolate offering' and dished out a very worthy 8.3 out of 10. A few weeks later I then took a look at the Praline Lait, which managed to supersede the previous Blanc offering earning itself a 'must try for praline fans' commendation and an even superior 8.5 out of 10 rating. Having tried both of those phenomenal bars you can imagine my excite at trying this Praline Aux Noix - this was one I kept all to myself :D

This 70.0g offering came with a slightly differentiated proposition from the aforementioned hazelnut based praline bars, with the on-pack description making reference to a 'walnut praline filling' accompanying the dark chocolate. Aesthetically the bar looked every bit as glorious as any other Galler product I have reviewed previously. The wrapper communicated the premium nature of the brand expertly with it's fine black stylishness, whilst the chocolate was certainly intriguing with it's well portioned filling studded with small nut fragments. Aroma wise the mood was suitably set by the plethora of nutty cocoa scents that emanated from the inner foil wrapping - I could tell this one was going to be a real treat.

As I mentioned above this wasn't one of the bars I shared out amongst any colleagues, friends or family. I wanted to savour this one all to myself, and I ended up eating it across a number of days accompanying my after dinner coffee. Briefly speaking about the outer dark chocolate, it was of a magnificent quality, and full of rich tasting balanced cocoa flavours that progressed wonderfully along the passage of it's soft flowing melt (read more extensive thoughts on Galler's 60% cocoa dark chocolate - HERE). Focusing more on the filling on offer I thought it was absolutely delicious, though admittedly it wasn't quite the perfection I dreamed it might be. The inner filling managed to cut through the strong tasting chocolate, though compared to the other praline bars the taste wasn't quite as strong or long lasting. The main reason for this being so, was because the leading flavour influence was still woody hazelnut, which was somewhat surprising given the walnut billing. Rest assured the praline filling was still very tasty, but I did want something more from the walnut constituents which whilst evident in texture, lacked a definitive influence in the taste.

Overall this was a near impossible chocolate to score due to it being both delicious, yet still a tad disappointing. Having now reviewed in the region of twenty Galler products, I'm already taking for granted how consistently well the brand presents it's products. Everything about the packaging and crafting of the chocolate shows high expertise, and the inner product once again proved itself to be more than a match. The dark chocolate praline combination was a strong synergy of ingredients with the 60% chocolate laying down a rich cocoa flavour base for the nutty praline to enhance. My only real gripe with this particular offering derived from the walnut constituents, which on the balance of things didn't create the impact on the taste that I desired. Having now consumed the bar, I'm a little unsure why Galler felt the need for change from their original hazelnut focused praline. As proved by the Galler Praline Blanc & Praline Lait, the hazelnut praline was already strong enough to occupy the space - in the grand scheme of things the walnuts were perhaps not even necessary. It sounds silly moaning about a chocolate that was so enjoyable but perfection is what Galler should strive for. Trust me, they aren't far off.

8.3 out of 10

Lol I was wondering why all the galler reviews had suddenly stopped. I shouldn't have worried myself lol.
This one sounds nice enough but I think I would plump for the milk chocolate hazelnut praline one if I had the choice of all three chocolate coatings. Thanks.

God your Galler reviews always get me so hungry for chocolate even though I've never tried any of their stuff before lol.

I hope that their mini selection includes some samples of all their different praline chocs. I've asked for it for my birthday but it doesn't say what is actually included in it if you look at it on the website.

Thank you for the review today Jim your photos look yummy again. I love the way you make them look all the same, I don't know how you do it lol.

I'm not keen at all on walnuts so I don't think this would be one for me. I'm far more keen for that white chocolate praline. It sounds dreamy.

Not far off perfection are they? You must rate them very highly to say something like that lol.

If you had to choose between a Galler praline and a Hotel Chocolat praline slab which would you go for? Comparing the scores it looks like Hotel Chocolat.

Omg that picture is nom nom nom. I could eat praline all day if someone let me lol.

Why do Galler have to be so hard to buy. This is like the sixth time that I want to buy something of theirs but I cba getting it off the internet.

I'm not one for dark chocolates but even this appeals to me. Lol I think you could coat praline in anything and I would be willing to give it at least a try. I'm so mad for the stuff lol.

jim do you know if Galler are going to be creating any special lines for Christmas etc this year? I've only started taking notice of them this year and they dont seem to have anything of that sort up on their site?

Dark chocolate ..... instant turn off for me. Lol Galler have so many milk and white chocolates flavours I would rather try any of them first of all. Lol this review is a nice reminder for me though. I need to buy my mum a present for her birthday and I was thinking of getting her some of those orange tinned chocolates you showed us.

Cool review thanks ever so much for it. Do you review chocolate from the likes of these people often? This must cost you loads.

Jim I would thank you for reviewing another one of the chocs I asked you to but I think you secretly enjoyed this one didn't you ;) lol did you have any luck getting samples of the others that I asked? Seeing some more of those alcohol filled bars would be prime. I'm thinking of buying a few of them for my family.

Cheers matey.

I still dont like those wrappers they give their whole range a very generic look. If you laid them all out in a row it would be so hard to tell what is what if you dont speak french. I mean what the hell does green mean? How does that indicate walnut at all? Answer: It doesn't!!!!!

Lol found it! There is your fancy summary sentence for today ;-P lol you always put one in.

The white chocolate one was always going to be better. You needn't have bothered with rubbish old dark.

I know you say it didn't come out that strongly but at least they tried something different with the walnut bit. Perhaps it was just the bar that you tried? Properly fresh made chocolates like these can probably vary loads depending on the quality of the nuts they are using at that time. It could be worth trying again some day?

Thanks for the review Jim I love your thoroughness with these things :-) You've now done an aamzing amount of Galler reviews. Are you going to have reviewed them all soon? What will you do then lol?

Richard said...

I still think they are overly expensive but I'm coming around to thinking that I need to try at least one of their chocs just to make sure that my assumption is correct.

I don't see how any chocolate can be worth £2.60 a bar (before postage!!!!) but if I had to try just one which would you suggest it be? I'm not definitely going to buy it, I'm just curious to your thoughts.

Sally said...

If you ever review something this yummy looking again please can you put a warning on your website before we are allowed in? LMAO i'm so desperate for some choc now. I'm going to have to buy some on my way to class.

I can't stand walnuts they make me cringe just thinking about them. I hate the way they have such soft textures, they just dont feel right when you bite in to them. Its the softness that gets me, it makes me think they are old and gone off.

Duncan said...

Jim did you ever consider doing that galler round up post showing the ones you think are the best? If you split it by white, milk and dark chocolate that would be awesome. I'm thinking of buying one from each different type, I would really welcome your recommendations seeing as you have tried so many.

Tracey said...

Phew I thought you had stopped with your galler reviews for a while there. I thought you might have been put off by that last rubbish one you posted about with the burnt hazelnuts. It was just me being inpatient by the looks of things lol.

Karen said...

Fab review again today Jim. It's a pity that didn't pull off the walnut thing because it sounds like it was a nice way making it different from all their other pralines chocolates. Do you think it just didn't taste as strong because the chocolate was stronger? Does that make sense? What I'm trying to say is if it had been their white chocolate do you think you would of been able to taste the walnut better?

Paul said...

I had assumed you were going to give this a huge score because it was dark chocolate lol that shows how much I know. I wish I had the ability to compare all these different chocolates like you do. I will be lucky if I ever get to try one :(

Andrew said...

Jim if you ever get bored of reviewing all these Galler chocs you know I'm available for taste testing ;)

Have you ever thought about letting a reader write a review for you?

Selina said...

I would never haven chosen to have put walnuts in such a chocolate. They are never the stongest tasting things at the best of times, let alone when you have praline and dark chocolate already in the mix of things.

Galler never seem to be short of ideas even if they aren't always the best ones.

Another lovely looking Galler bar I want to try lol they all look very nice and sound tasty. I think I might ask for one or two for christmas, since they are a little pricey but as a gift I think its justifiable :)

Phil said...

Wow you always have a new Galler bar to review :) They must make a very large range.
The combination of dark chocolate and praline sounds very nice. Actually every time I see a photo of Galler chocolate on here I always think it looks nice and good quality. Haha.

I have a sneaky suspicion that this blog owner might work for this company. The amount of so called "reviews" focused on a single entity is astonishing. There are too many for it to be coincedental.

If you are going to be reviewing more of these Galler chocolates can I please make a cheeky request that you try the cognac one they have on their wesbite please. I've seen that you have done a few of the alcohol filled bars already and was wondering as to whether you fancied trying that one out? I think it's exactly the sort of chocolate my dad would love.

Simon said...

If they were going to be putting big chunks of nut in there why didn't they just keep it consistent and go with hazelnuts?
It seems like an odd decision to randomly bring walnuts in to the fray. I relate to what @Selina is saying, they aren't exactly the strongest tasting nuts you can buy.

Ana said...

I would have been really disappointed - it promises walnut, but it offers more hazelnut :(

Hi All,

Thank heavens it's now the weekened ... well almost :D

Before I launch into answering your topics today I have some .... BREAKING NEWS ....

The Galler group is in the midst of reorganising its businesses and a decision has been taken for Galler UK’s activities
to be integrated with Galler Belgium.

Therefore the Galler UK website www.gallerchocolates.co.uk will be taken over by Galler Belgium www.galler.com
who will be producing a more universal website in the coming months. This will however mean that for the interim
period you will be unable to purchase Galler products over the internet.

If you require any further information on this reorganisation please contact Galler at www.galler.com

....not great news huh!? I doubt we will see Galler focus as much on their enterprises in the UK as we all would have hoped :(

Golden - Re: 'I hope that their mini selection includes some samples of all their different praline chocs'

It says it includeds samples of all of the chocolates in their range. You would expect them all to be in there wouldn't you.

Colin - Re: 'If you had to choose between a Galler praline and a Hotel Chocolat praline slab which would you go for?'

That is an extremelly hard question to answer my friend. I'm not sure I can pick between the two to be honest. If you pushed me I would probably go for the Hotel Chocolat option.

Lucy - Re: 'Lol I think you could coat praline in anything and I would be willing to give it at least a try.'

I think I'm with you on that. praline is a marvellous, marvellous thing.

Nick - Re: 'jim do you know if Galler are going to be creating any special lines for Christmas etc this year?'

I really don't know to be honest. What with them now integrating in to Belguim their range and offerings may become streamlined for the time being.

Anon - Re: 'Do you review chocolate from the likes of these people often?

The archive full of posts would suggest so :D They get sent as tasting samples mind you.

Nigel / Tom - Re: Getting my Galler samples

The Galler restructure has scuppered my ability to get hold of anything from Galler recently. This is the last one I received from them I'm afraid.

Alex - Re: 'I still dont like those wrappers they give their whole range a very generic'

I think they look pretty cool and classy myself. You are more than entitled to your opinion but I don't agree with it.

Rachel / Adam / Karen /Selina / Henry / Simon / Ana - Re: Walnut Content

Adam you have a good point about the walnuts varying from batch to batch, that is certainly something that can happen with nuts.

Fundamentally I think they should probably have gone with a different nut type to pair with the praline, some of you guys do make a very worthwhile point about it in every likelyhood always being dominated by the other stronger tasting consituents.

Richard / Duncan Re: 'if I had to try just one which would you suggest it be?'

I get asked this pretty much everytime I review something from Galler. I honestly can't remember them all - your best bet is to check the archives for the highest scoring one. One that certainly sticks out is the Praline Lait.

Duncan - Thanks for the reminder about the round up post. I will do something closer to the end of the year.

Phil Re:'every time I see a photo of Galler chocolate on here I always think it looks nice and good quality.'

I will take that as compliment about the standard of the photos haha :D Its such a shame they are abandoning ship in the UK don't you think.

Anon Re: 'I have a sneaky suspicion that this blog owner might work for this company.'

I hope this is someones idea of a joke.

Thanks for the feedback today everyone. It's not great news about the integration back in to Belguim I'm afraid. It could mean a lack of ambition to grow their brand in the UK which is a real shame I think. I guess the best we can do is see how it plays out.

There is a special Bits n Bobs post up tomorrow. Enjoy the weekend.

JIM
