Kcal 95 Fat 5.8g Carbs 9.7g (per 17.0g double finger)As I announced last week, J-List have just recently replenished their chocolate stocks and my pal Peter has sent me a nice sampling package containing some of the latest Japanese chocolate snacks. Of course whenever we talk about Japanese chocolate snacks the words 'Kit Kat' are never far behind. Indeed, in this latest package Peter included the last hot property flavour available on the Japanese market - the 'Dark Bitter' variety. You may have noticed that this flavour has been in the top selling J-List snack chart for a fair few weeks, which is little surprise given that like most Kit Kat flavours in Japan it is only around as a limited edition.
This Kit Kat variety came in a box containing two 17.0g double finger serving sizes that I ate in a single sitting as an afternoon snack. The Japanese Kit Kats always have tendency for being immacutaly presented but this variety looked particularly classy with the box finished with a matted feel material and sparkling gold coloured fonts. As per usual the Kit Kat fingers inside were wrapped in foil wrappers and were kept in a lovely fresh condition emanating some delightful chocolatey scents when ripped open.
I have to admit I perhaps wasn't quite as intrigued about this variety as I had been with more some of the more unusual flavours I had sourced from Japan in the past. In the UK we obviously have a dark chocolate Kit Kat readily available to us all - this was a bar I reviewed back in September 2008 in which I concluded: 'I wouldn't say it was better than the standard Kit Kat, though nor would I say it was worse'. My grand hope for this Japanese variety was that it was going to take the dark chocolate flavour experience a stage further than our 'mass consumer friendly' dark chocolate offering. Unfortunately when it came to the taste test I pretty much came to the same conclusion about this Japanese bar than I did the UK one. The 'dark' chocolate coating in reality was what I like to call a 'mass consumer friendly' unsweetned chocolate. It was fair in it's flavour contribution and noticeably less sweet, however the cocoa volume was hardly turned up in the taste. The only real difference I percieved from the UK bar was that the texture of the chocolate melt was a little grittier and rougher in this Japanese version. This wasn't so much an annoyance or particularly noticceable, but it certainly wasn't to my preference. On a positive note the four finger portion was at least decent size for a mid-afternoon snack, and did me right in that sense.
Overall although I was a tiny weenie bit disappointed that this Japense Kit Kat Dark Bitter didn't provide a step change experience from our UK offering, at the end of the day it was still a very nice chocolate bar. Given the sweetness of a lot of the other Kit Kat varities I have tried from the Far East in the past it was probably a little naive of me hoping for a 70% Lindt dark chocolate experience. I'm not saying The dark chocolate coating on offer was bad in any way shape or form (it wasn't!), but I would absolutely love to try a Kit Kat one day that has a serious dark chocolate exterior - I guess one can dream. On the basis that our UK Kit Kat Dark is so similar, I can't go recommending this bar as a 'must try now' for all you readers. You still might want to keep your eyes on the J-List website however, as Peter has informed me there is due to be an influx of all new flavours very soon.

Lol its mental what these reviews do to me sometimes. I haven't had a dark chocolate kit kat for years but I have a strange compulsion to go buy one now today. I will update you later with my thoughts on it :-) I don't expect it to have changed.
The Japanese can be sensible with their flavours when they want to be then. This is a random question but do you think they make just a normal milk chocolate kit kat over there?
I assume they must do, but every one that you have ever featured apart from this one has always had a crazy flavour attached to it. It would be interesting to know.
I never thought I would see something like this come from that website. It's almost too sensible for me to believe it's true. Are you sure it wasn't dark chocolate with wasabi or something lol?
Rxxx
Great review Jim thanks for being so honest. Its very level headed of you to realise that these things cost a lot of money to buy so its nice getting an unbiased view on whether it is buying.
Before I read this I might have thought it was different from our UK one so would have wasted my money on it. Thank you.
In the UK we obviously have a dark chocolate Kit Kat readily available to us all - this was a bar I reviewed back in September 2008 in which I concluded: 'I wouldn't say it was better than the standard Kit Kat, though nor would I say it was worse'.
No way the dark chocolate kit kit is horrid compared to the normal one. The only time I ever buy the dark choc one is when they are sold out of the original. Most times I just end up buying something else if that is the case anyway. It's hardly like we lack choice.
ps. BTW Jim I tried the caramel senses bar the other day. I thought it was a little better than you rated it but yeah I agree with you that it was crappy just making it the same as the caramel chunky but smaller. I would buy it again though.
They are starting to make loads of dark chocolate flavoured things in the Far East now. If you keep an eye out for it you will see that it is one of their new trends that has just started => You heard it hear first
This review came a little late for me :-( I put two of these down in my latest order so I'm a bit annoyed to see that I could stroll down my local shop and buy nearly exactly the same thing. Oh well, I have plenty of other things coming along with them. Thanks for the review.
Why do we not get our Kit Kats in cool boxes like they do? I think they make them look a load more special. It must cost them a bomb to do that for each bar though, I can understand my manufactures always want to keep the packaging to a minimum, it's pretty wasteful sticking them in a box considering they are wrapped in foil lol.
You can't beat a kit kat and a cup of tea ;) its the ultimate sit down and relax snack of all time.
Jim have you tried the caramel pudding kit kat they have up on that site?
I would love to buy them to try myself but they worryingly sound like one of those things that are going to sound like they taste better than they do lol. I have tried looking for a kit kat category on your side bar but there isn't one.
Nice picture Jim. It not only sounds like it tastes like our own one but underneath all the fancy pants wrapping it looks exactly the same too.
If you look at the box do you think it might have had cocoa powder in it (accounting for the rough texture you talk about). It looks like it from the picture on the box.
I can't help but marvel at all the Pocky flavours they have on J-List. I'm way too tempted by some of the prices but wont they just lump on a big price for shipping costs? Do you know what the average cost is for like a small package of four things? e.g. four boxes of pocky?
Great review mate! I think I might be buying myself a dark choc kit kat later :) Its been ages since I last had one of them because I normally just buy a chunky one which they dont do in dark choc.
My predictions for tonight are
Man City 2 1 Man U
Wigan 1 2 Liverpool
I think Torres will win it for us but Tevez will score two to beat you guys. Good luck.... NOT!! LOL
To be honest, I wouldn't have presumed that this would be much different from the UK version. But yeah, I guess, one can always hope.
Disappointing for you of course, but for us it's nice now and then to not get tempted to buy the stuff you review. ;-)
Lol your term of consumer friendly dark chocolate is dark chocolate for people like me. I like to believe im being all grown up eating something that is dark chocolate but if im honest with myself I know it isnt really dark chocolate at all. I dont think its a bad thing preferring milk chocolate. Its just my own tastes isnt it.
Dx
Do you know what? I have lived in the presence of dark chocolate kit kats for all my life but ive not ever tried one.
After read this post im not compelled to go changing that anytime, maybe one day I will try it but i never really buy kitkats so i dont expect it to be any time soon. Thank you for the review today.
Jim they do make a 70% cocoa kit kat in Canada. You should review that one if it is a proper dark chocolate kit kat you want.

This isn't my sort of thing at all but I do love seeing these reviews from Japan. In some ways they seem really far ahead of us with their flavours, but if you look at it from a different angle you never see any of the more sensible ones like caramel or dark chocolate on any of the websites.
I too would also like to know if they have a milk choc flavoured one. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they dont lol.
When will you be telling people who won the marmite chocolate. I'm desperate to win it for my friend. She will love it if I can get her one. Everywhere shes asks for it they say they have run out. Who would have thought there would be a national shortage of marmite chocolate lol.
Top review. Its nice hearing honest opinions about these things rather than just what you read on the website which says its the best thing since sliced bread. Its much appreciated so thank you.
Sorry for my randomness but can we please have some hot chocolate reviews? Its getting so cold again booooo.
@anonymous no truer words have ever been spoken :) kit kats are the ultimate snack you can ever have.
I will be joining the club of people buying a dark choc kit kat today. Its been way too long since my last one.
Its a pity they didn't send you something more interesting to review. They have so many different flavoured things its odd they sent you something you can buy in your own country. Hmmm maybe they have loads of stock left over?
I like dark chocolate and I like kit kats but I wouldn't ever buy a dark chocolate kit kat. I know that sounds funny but I just dont think the two would work together.
If I want something more classy and refined I go for a decent dark chocolate. If I want something more maintstream and trashy I go for a kit kat. The two don't work together.
@Sakura I thought I had noticed them start to make more dark chocolate flavoured things. I love the Japanese and their crazes they are so funny. Its like they go made for certain flavours for a few weeks and then forget about them totally.
Ooooo no I really want a kit kat now. I've only just got in to class aswell :( It's going to be a long two hours booo.
@Matt I was just wishing that last night! I went to Whittard's to buy some and it was really hard to choose between their 22 flavors. I regretfully decided hot chocolate probably didn't count as CM material...but now you bring it up.. :) I got Banoffee, the spice/chili flavors looked best but I figured I can mix those at home myself. It's delicious, just don't repeat my experiment of adding a bit of candy cane, disastrous lol!
For all the wacky flavours they do I would never consider for one minute just buying a dark chocolate flavoured one all the way from Japan. Did it say the cocoa content % on the package Jim? It would be interesting to know if their recipe was in any way different to our one.
Mmmmm yum the dark chocolate kit kat is the best out of them all in my mind. It's always the one I choose if they stock it, its much better than the plain milk chocolate in my opinion.
If only they would make a chunky version of it. A lad can dream hey.
I've never really liked dark chocolate Kitkats, not sure why. However years ago I tried this one, it had a passionfruit cream and dark chocolate coating and was absolutely delicious:

Have you seen the new dark Aero yet Jim?
You must have a way with words or something because I'm desperate for a Kit Kat now ;/ so unfair.
Been looking forward to some new KitKat reviews so even though this one wasn't really outrageous, it's still welcomed. I've not actually tried our own version of this (I must next time I see one) but I'm sure between the two I'd go with ours if you can't see much difference. I just got the new dark Aero from Tesco yesterday so will try it sometime over the next few days. Are you going to review this? It's different from the Canadian(?) bar as ours is only 50% whilst I'm sure theirs is 70% cocoa. Thanks again for the review.
I NEED A KIT KAT RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi All,
Apologies I couldn't make this one a bit more exciting today. If I told you beforehand that I had a Japanese Kit Kat to review I doubt many of you would have guessed it was a dark chocolate one.
Nick / Kim - Re:'do you think they make just a normal milk chocolate kit kat over there?'
Indeed they do. If you look back to my previous review on the white peach flavour they came in a multibag that contained some plain milk chocolate Kit Kats aswell.
Rachel - Re:'Are you sure it wasn't dark chocolate with wasabi or something lol?
'
I think I might gave noticed if there was Wasabi in there haha :D
Neil / Karen - Re:'Great review Jim thanks for being so honest'
I don't benefit from lieing about anything!? If I told you all to buy it because it was amazingly different you lot would see through it in seconds. All my reviews are unbiased/non-leading.
Katie - Re: Dark vs Milk chocolate Kit Kats
I like to swap between the two ... not that I comonlly get to tuck in to a Kit Kat mind! I'm too busy eating whatever it is I'm reviewing for the day normally.
Sakura - Re: They are starting to make loads of dark chocolate flavoured things in the Far East now
Cool I will keep an eye on this emerging theme. I will remember you said it first ;)
Steven - Re:'This review came a little late for me'
Apologies. Still though I'm sure you will enjoy it.
Ben - Re:'Why do we not get our Kit Kats in cool boxes like they do?'
I think you answered your own question there. They look cool but the eco-warriors would throw a fit. Justifiably so it has to be said.
Mark - Re:'have you tried the caramel pudding kit kat they have up on that site
I have done years ago. Check under the Japan tag it's like the first review filed under it.
Tracey - Re: Do you know what the average cost is for like a small package of four things? e.g. four boxes of pocky
Tracey I have to admit I have no clue whatsoever. I can't imagine shipping anything from Japan is going to be cheap though. It's best you just had a play around on the website and see what it comes out with. Sorry.
Nigel - Re: Predictions
Big game tonight. I don't fancy us either myself.
City 2 United 0
Wigan 2 Liverpool 2
I'm useless at predictions :D
Anne - Re: Your Comment
Indeed. We both win really. You guys get your minds put at ease, and I get to eat some lovely Kit Kats :D Win win situation.
Frank - Re: Never tried a dark chocolate Kit Kat
Do yourself a favour and try one chap. It's hardly an expensive adventure :D
David - Re: 70% Cocoa Kit Kat
Good find. I have tried the 70% Aero they make in Canada and it was very good. Lets see if I can get hold of one eh!?
Joe - Re: Marmite Competition Winner
I will announce the winner on Sunday on my Twitter feed. Look out for it.
Matt - Hot Chocolate Reviews
I have had these requested many a time now. It looks like I need to pull my finger out and do some! Consider me on the case but it might take a few weeks to get things up and running.
James - Re:I like dark chocolate and I like kit kats but I wouldn't ever buy a dark chocolate kit kat. I know that sounds funny but I just dont think the two would work together.'
Really? I think they work together brilliantly. If you haven't ever tried one I would urge you to do so. It makes a nice change from the milk chocolate.
Thea - Re:'Not CM material'
Haha the rules aren't very strict round here I wouldn't worry about that. Like I said to Matt above consider me 'on the case' with some hot chocolate reviews. To be honest they might not start until the new year. There is a lot to fit in before then.
Warren - Re:'Did it say the cocoa content % on the package Jim?'
I did try and look for a figure amongst all the Japanese writing but I couldn't make anything out. I will try look it up on some other reviews if I can.
Phil - Re: Your Comment
Wow that passionfuit dark chocolate Kit Kat does look pretty great. I would love to have been able to try it myself to review. Oh well.
Ria / Phil - Re: Dark Chocolate Aero
I have heard about this new Aero but I'm yet to find it in my local Tesco. They have a massive confectionery stand near the tills but it's still yet to make an appearance. I will keep my eyes open for it :D
If ours is only 50% it is definitely different to the Canadian one. I will be interesting to see how they match up.
Thanks for the comments everyone, some really nice feedback today. There are more exciting Japanese reviews coming soon I promise. On a plus note ... I got some of the latest Heavenly Cakes today :D Good times.
JIM
I had to look on J-List :)) and now I'm coming with requests
- Morinaga Bake
- Morinaga Choco Ball - Caramel
- Parody Milk Chocolate Mirror
- Lotte Sasha - Caramel Flavor
- Glico Van Houten Chocolate Biscuit
I went and read your reviews of the UK Kit Kat Dark and of the regular Kit Kat, updated with the Chunky and one thing that I found really interesting was that you say "I do have a soft spot for the iconic status of the four finger."
I find that funny because, back in 2003, when Kit Kats first appeared in Romania, they came in the Chunky version. The four finger format, the mini format... they only appeared a few years after. So when I think about Kit Kat, I first think about the Chunky.
I wouldn't of thought about buying this before but it's good to see you aren't swayed to saying stuff is good just because they send you things to review. I think we all knew we could trust your reviews anyway Jim, we know you would never lie to us.
Ana - Yep Kit Kats have always been best known as finger wafers in our country. It was only mid 2000s that we got the Chunky! I have noted your requests ... I have a few of them coming up on the site already so you are in luck in that sense.
Lauren - You only get the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth on this web site :D
