Kcal ??? Fat ??? Fat(sats) ??? Carbs ???After a four month absence, Heavenly Cakes are back on ChocolateMission and they return with several new offerings that I will be reviewing in the coming weeks. Indeed, since they last featured on the site they have been working away at developing several varities of new shortbread, flapjacks etc. You many also be inerested to hear that they have created gluten free alternatives for all the cakes in their existing portfolio - a special review of them will be coming soon! Kicking off my latest round of Heavenly Cakes posts, I today tried out their Lemon Meringue with White Chocolate. On the website they describe this as 'light meringue pieces coated in white chocolate, set on lemon curd and all-butter shortbread'.
I recieved this cake in a single serving form which in true Heavenly fashion was more than enough for two. Since I last reviewed some of their products Heavenly have slightly advanced their single serving packaging, and have made the wise decision of adding a cardboard business card to the underside of each cake to provide additional support (thumbs up!). As ever I hope my photos have done the cake justice - it looked fantastic. The sticky lemon curd and flaky meringue made it a somewhat messy experience to eat, however I was more preoccupied by the thickness of each of the layers which made the prospect more appetising than notable for it's messyness.
Lemon meringue pie isn't normally my dessert of choice but everything up until this point was certainly looking very promising. Aroma wise compared to some of the other Heavenly Cakes I had tried previously this cake wasn't the impactful in that regard, yet still offered a decent enough lemony set of smells. Biting in to the cake for the first time, the most immediate source of pleasure came from the interplay of the different textured layers. The light chocolate meringue topping yielded wonderfully into the gooey layer of lemon curd below, whilst the biscuit base was firm yet crumbly at it's centre. Whilst the mouth feel was glorious, the flavours on offer were similarly delightful. A mixture of white chocolate and meringue sounds like a path to a sugar coma, however seemingly no expense was spared on the quality of the white chocolate which was more notable for it's cream based flavours rather than it's sweetness. Sat below the topping, the binding lemon curd provided a sweet citrusy tang which complimented the buttery, salty flavours of the biscuit base quite expertly. The combination of all these layers was frankly delicious and actually lighter and less rich than I was expecting. Shared between two, the 'single serving' was a satisfying amount for afternoon tea.
Overall this was yet another tasty cake offering from the guys at Heavenly, and it was nice to see that their capabilities stretch further afield than I maybe first thought. This Lemon Meringue Pie cake was the first white chocolate offering of their's I had tried, and I have the delight of saying it was every bit as good as any of their milk chocolate cakes. Although I will forever have a preference to milk chocolate based products, I simply loved the white chocolate that they used for the topping here, and I think it worked beautifully with the meringue to produce a full on lemon meringue pie experience. Similarly the synergy created by the lemon curd and biscuit elements was just as wonderful, and made for a cake that was refreshlingy fruity, yet equally indulgent. If you like lemon meringue pie than I simply can't recommend this cake enough to you. A sweet tooth is required to fully enjoy this offering, but white chocolate fans should also seriously be considering this as a cake they need to try.

You have managed to pick the one cake I could happily do without on the heavenly site Jim congrats lol!! For what it's worth I think the idea of putting white chocolate in with the meringue is good. This one just isn't for me lol.
I love the sound of this cake I'm going to have to try it. Have you ever thought about running a heavenly competion jim like the one you did for Ritter sport yesterday? This lemon meringue sounds so delicious I'm going to be looking at it all day now.
Thanks for another fab review.
Rxxx
You're right about white chocolate and meringue sounding a little much but if you say it works out I trust you :) nearer christmas I'm going to order a big batch of cakes for my office :) I think these will be on the menu lol. Nice one jim and nice one heavenly.
They should have made these with milk choc that would have been ten times more epic. Great pictures today.
How do I get a job reviewing yummy cakes like this? It's so unfair.
I used to have a real hatred for lemon curd up until a few months ago when my grandma made me some lemon curd and butter toast. Now l can't get enough of it lol I think I would adore this cake. I'm so tempted to buy some.
Omg this one looks so lush. I'm not the biggest fan ever of lemon pie but even I think this looks amazing.
I really do have to stop denying myself some heavenly cakes they sound divine. You are so lucky being able to try them jim.
Great review jim and great photos.
I have just been cruising the heavenly cakes website and I see they have loads of new shortbreads. I'm pretty curious about the lavender one. Is that something they have asked you to review? It sounds like it has potential to me.
Dx
Wow this looks so nice. I've heard of lemon tarts before but I've not ever seen something has unique as this.
Did they ever start making that variety pack they said they would? It's so hard picking just one.
If I had my pick of cakes from heavenly this wouldn't be my first choice but it still looks very nice.
The one I really have my eye on is their snickers flapjack. I trust you will be reviewing that right?
As great as it is to see some more Hc reviews I could have done without this one lol. I shudder at the thought of lemon curd. Lol just the thought of it sends shivers down my spine.
As glad as I am to see these guys back up on the site I wish you hadn't posted this review :) I go through the day now dreaming of eating cakes like this, I end up eating so much crap.
Is there any way you can get us the nutritional information so we know just how naughty these cakes are?
Oh.my.god this looks so tasty.
I've not had lemon meringue pie for years. My mum used to make homemade when we were younger and my brother and I used to battle each other to the death when it came to the last piece.
I agree with what David says about the white chocolate. It's an inspired addition to the traditional recipe.
I fancy the mixed berry maringue thing they have up on there site more but I would be more than happy settling for a slice of this.
I should really learn to stop looking at this website in the mornings. I waste so much time just staring at your beautiful photos of these sinful treats lol.
Cracking review mate. I'm not one for normally yearning after lemon flavoured things but this cake looks amazing.
I would need a dollop of ice cream to take the sharpness of the lemon off because I'm a wimp when it comes to acidic things (terrible heartburn). It does sound very nice though. Thanks Jim.
Are you taking requests for Heavenly Cakes Jim?
If so can I ask you review the following cakes of theirs please:
1. midnight mint
2. marathon flapjack
3. chocolate shortbread
4. cinnamon shortbread
5. mixed berry shortbread
If you can review any of them I would love to see what you think. Right I have to stop dreaming over cakes now :) I need to get some work done.
Since when have all of their cakes been gluten free?
Lemon meringue would never in a million years be a dessert of choice for me but this does look terrific.
Have Heavenly managed to get stocked in any supermarkets since we last saw them jim? I think they should go on the dragons den to see if they could get some exposure that way. They obviosuly make some really wonderful cakes, they have the looks of a company that should be bigger than they are.
Forget Mr Kipling these people look like they know what they are doing when it comes to cakes.
Are they going to be making any cakes for Christmas? I want to lodge a suggestion that they attempt to make some chocolate christmas puddings. Why has no one ever tried doing that before? Chocolate Christmas cake would be equally as acceptable ;)
As much as I'm a fan of heavenly cakes this is one of theirs I think I am better of leaving alone.
The mixed berry version sounds better but it's the lemon bit of this I don't fancy. It's a nice idea for a cake but it's just not for me. The review was still a good read though thank you Jim.
p.s. turn the brightness on your camera down lol :P
@Ryan I agree that marathon thing looks amaze. Please review asap Jim.
They have so many good looking cakes now it would be hard to just pick one to try. This one wouldn't be top of my list but if you put it infront of me I would be more than happy to gobble it up :)
So much for me starting my diet. Both this cake and the latest ritter chococlate have got me hovering over various site purchse buttons. My resistance is futile, I might as well just give up now and not bother trying.
Lol it's Christmas anyway. It's not like I'm going to be hitting any beaches for a while.
@Anonymous I dont think all of their cakes are gluten free but I think they have just started making gluten free alternatives. That is such a nice thing of them to do. My cousin is always moaning about all the different foods he cant have because of his required diet.
As for this cake I think it sounds awesome. White chocolate and lemon is always a well good mixture. I love the contrast of sweet and sharp - lovely jubbly.
Damn these cakes are expensive. As highly as you rate them you have to consider you could buy a nice box of chocolates for the prices they have on their site.
Are they going to be on sale in shops soon? The idea of buying cakes off the internet sounds a bit perverse to me.
Lemon curd? Isnt that old people jam lol?
If they make a strawberry or marmalade version then I am sold. I think orange would work amazingly in a cake like this.
Gorgeous just gorgeous.
These people make some beastily cakes but I love the way they keep them looking so pretty.
I think this is their best looking one to date IMO. I might attempt to create some similar cakes this weekend now :)
Lol it is nice to see there is more to Heavenly than making different cakes and the lumping a load of caramel and chocolate on top.
It does come across as more of a summery cake but I would still be keen as if someone gave me a slice. Nice one Jim, loving your work still.
Sounds delicious. I'm not a massive fan of lemon meringue pie (like Emma I've not had it in years), but I do like white chocolate and I'm sure I'd enjoy this. I wonder what new products Heavenly have up their sleeve...I'd like to see a white chocolate coated flapjack. It annoys me that the ones you get in shops use nasty fake toppings.
Oh my, that cake sounds indeed heavenly! I love lemon curd so I am sure I would love this cake to bits! You even make the white chocolate sound like a good addition, and that's coming from someone who isn't very fond of white chocolate either. If I ever order cakes from them, I think I will include this one! Which I might have overlooked had you not reviewed it. So thank you for another mouthwatering (and jealousy inducing ;-) review.
For anyone wanting to try some Milka products, saw these in my local Lidl yesterday: http://www.malincho.com/p-5065-milka-fine-noisette-balls-1125g.aspx
They also had the alpine milk and nougat creme variety there!
Simply gorgoues.
I can see myself putting in a big heavenly cakes order before xmas time. I'm not sure this lemon meringue is going to make the cut what with so many lovely looking cakes. It's going to be in my consideration though thats for sure.
Thanks for a brill review.
I wish I hadn't looked on the site today. This is jusy way too tasty looking compared to my boring sarnie.
The concept of lemon meringue with white chocolate piled on top is such a good one, I've not seen anything like this before in my time.
Its so good to see heavenly cakes back Jim I let out a little squeal when this loaded up today lol.
I hadn't looked at the heavenly site for a while so it's brill seeing they have come up with some new ideas for their cakes.
It must be the only way that a company like this can hope to survive (coming up with different recipes etc.) There are so many people that make the standard cakes nowadays it must be so important to stand out from the crowd.
This looks lush. I will definitely be keeping it top of mind next time I need to takes cakes to a suitable occasion.
How fast are these people at sending the cakes once you order them? Are postage costs high?
Lemon meringue pie should only be eaten with a big splodge of cream. To eat it without would be like drinking tea without milk - it just shouldn't happen.
I'm not a lover of white choc but it sounds like a cool thing to add to the normal lemon meringue stuff. Betty the baker knows how to make some gorgeous cakes lol.
p.s. rachel is right we need a heavenly competition asap.
Another stunning review Jim I swear they must get better and better with time.
Did you share these cakes with anyone this time around? What were their impression of them, did they think as much of them as you did?
Keep up the excellent work mate.
Hi All,
What a glorious day, Heavenly are up and running back on ChocolateMission and don't worry .... there are plenty more reviews to come. Comments, comments comments ...
David / Colin / Serena / John - Re: White chocolate and Meringue
It sounded like it was a one way path to sugar overload but believe you me it tastes superb.
Rachel / Jane - Re: Heavenly Cakes Competition
There was one run just a few months ago, you must have missed out. I will ask them about it again for the new year maybe.
Anon / Daisy / Sarah / Emily - Re: Photographs
It's very hard take good photos of white chocolat. I try my best but they don't always turn out as perfect as I would have hoped.
Kim / Ben - Re:'How do I get a job reviewing yummy cakes like this?'
I wont lie, it's hardly a chore :D writing reviews for products like this :D
Daisy - Re: have just been cruising the heavenly cakes website and I see they have loads of new shortbreads. I'm pretty curious about the lavender one. Is that something they have asked you to review?
That is one for the future but I have prioritised a few others before that one I'm afraid.
Darren - Re: Did they ever start making that variety pack they said they would?
They did but it's been taken down. I think the logistics are too hard now what with their range growing in size so much.
Ryan / Kevin - Re: Marathon Flapjack
Don't you worry this is very much on my radar :D Review up in the next few weeks.
Alicia - Re: Nutritional Information
I will ask for it. I don't know if they have it for the new cakes though.
Nigel - Re: I would need a dollop of ice cream to take the sharpness of the lemon off because I'm a wimp when it comes to acidic things (terrible heartburn).
Haha if it is rich food that upsets you then you best avoid. These are about as rich as they come.
Linda - Re: Are you taking requests for Heavenly Cakes Jim?
Not strictly speaking, but luckily for you I am covering off a number of the ones you have on the list. Reviews all up in the next few weeks of course.
Anon / Platts - Re: Gluten Free Range
They have started making gluten free alternatives for all of their products now. I will be doing a special post in the coming weeks comparing and contrasting them with the originals. Again, look out for that COMING SOON to a ChocolateMission near you :D
Ganesh - Re: Have Heavenly managed to get stocked in any supermarkets since we last saw them jim?
Not that I know of. I honestly think it is a matter of time though.
Katie - Re: Are they going to be making any cakes for Christmas?
Indeed. There are already a few of them up on the website you should check out. Take a look at the midnight mint for instance.
Julie - Re:'Lol it's Christmas anyway. It's not like I'm going to be hitting any beaches for a while.
'
I'm sorry but that made me chuckle! Indeed just go for it :D We only live once after all.
Andrew - Re: Price
You guys have an issue with the prices? Well WATCH THIS SPACE is all I can say :D more details given below.
Phil - Re: White Chocolate Flapjack
Chap I know they have been reading the site today so lets see if you can claim that it was your idea if they ever do make this :D I will make sure I remember it has a copyright of Phil if one does ever turn up haha!
Anne - Re: Your Comment
By the sounds of things this would suit you rather nicely. Good find on the new Milka products. They have been on sale in Germany for a while now, I will try and see if I can get hold of some for a review. Thanks for the link! very useful :D
Kieran - Re: 'It must be the only way that a company like this can hope to survive (coming up with different recipes etc.) There are so many people that make the standard cakes nowadays it must be so important to stand out from the crowd.'
I hope that was a manly squeal you big girl haha :D
You make a good point about the necessity for companies to be unique. They simply have to be if they are going to compete in such saturated markets ... do you remember Mr Bunbury cakes?? They died a death didn't they ... simple reason .. they weren't unique enough.
Adrian - Re: How fast are these people at sending the cakes once you order them? Are postage costs high?
They make to order so leave yourself time for them to bake. They package them expertly, all cakes they have ever sent me have come in top condition.
Justin - Re: Did you share these cakes with anyone this time around? What were their impression of them, did they think as much of them as you did?
Did you not read the review thoroughly :D I shared this with another person ... I couldn't handle it all myself :D Thanks for the nice words about the review.
What can I say guys/gals ... a none to unexpected triaumphant return for Heavenly Cakes. As I said to the Anonymous/Richard poster above you may want to keep an eye out on the site if price is your stick point with Heavenly Cakes :D ... there is a nice surprise coming round the corner for all ChocolateMission readers :D Hopefully I can get the Heavenly guys to respond to some of your comments when they have a minute. I know they are very busy so it might be a few days. Thanks for the comments.
JIM
Haha Jim, that'd be great. I'd also expect to be the chief taste tester :D
Amazing review jim this looks so nice. I think I'm like some of the others who have posted tonight. This wouldn't be the first cake I would like to try from heavenly but if I got the opportunity to try it I wouldn't be one to turn my nose up lol.
Keep the reviews coming I love them so much.
This cake just sounds heavenly! Also, it looks amazing, nice pics. Not tasted lemon curd since I was little and hated it but I love everything else that's lemony so would definitely consider giving this cake a try. I've so far resisted looking at the HC website but I'm about to cave in and have a peak as everything you've reviewed from them looks and sounds delicious. Thanks for another fab review.
Hi Everyone! Thanks for your contributions - I thought I would answer some of your questions.....
Rachel & Jane and 1 or 2 others have asked for another competition - we can do better than that!!!! We are offering a 10% discount on all cakes for JCM followers. Keep an eye on Jim's site for more details :D
Daisy - the lavender shortbread doesn't have enough chocolate in it to get onto JCM. Get in touch and we'll tell you your local stockist.
Darren - we did have an exclusive variety pack for JCM followers which comprised of 1 of each of the 1st reviews that Jim did. After the sucess from that,I am quite sure we can offer another. In the meantime, take advantage of the 10% offer.

Phil - white chocolate flapjack? Great idea! When you place your order, request white chocolate instead of milk and we'll do the rest :)
Lots of love,
Betty Bakes xx
Heavenly Cakes
Lol is that really Betty :-)
The discount sounds brilliant. How will we know when we can start getting it? Will you tell us Jim?
