Kcal ??? Fat ??? Fat(sats) ??? Carbs ???Up until last year if you had asked me what my favourite marzipan was, I would have answered with a very dead pan face 'I don't have one - it is awful stuff'. This would have been my response up until the day I tried my first Niederegger product that is. Ever since then my opinions have changed somewhat, and have done increasingly so as I have made my way through the numerous offerings in their range. If you have read most of my previous Niederegger reviews before (See HERE), you will be aware that most have gone along the lines of ... 'the chocolate isn't the best, but the marzipan is out of this world'. Please don't get me wrong, the quality of the dark chocolate isn't particularly bad or anything, but I have always felt that it has never quite the done the marzipan justice. Given this matter of fact I was delighted when I was finally able to track down this milk chocolate variety in my local Waitrose - before you all ask it was £1.49 :D
Just like it's dark chocolate coated equivalent, this bar came in a 100.0g format that I ate (with some help grrrrr!) across a few days. Keeping consistent with the rest of the Niederegger portfolio the packaging and presentation was nothing short of superb. The royal blue colour nicely differentiated it from the other varities, yet the gold foil fonts and and clear branding ensured that the prestigious aura of the Niederegger brand shone through. Inside the blocked chocolate was tightly wrapped in a thick foil sleeve that managed to maintain the chocolate in mint condition. Despite the somewhat mild aromas emanating from the bar, the branding and generous portioning of the marzipan filling more than did enough to keep my levels of anticipation high.
Starting off with the marzipan I have to say that it was god awful ... just absolutely, 100% terrible .... haha only joking :D What can I say about Niederegger marzipan that I haven't already!? The doughy, sweet nutty flavours have made me a marzipan convert - if you had told me that a year ago I would never have believed you. Niederegger marzipan has a cookie dough like appeal - it is very sweet, but the buttery, bread like flavours make for an incredibly seductive and moreish taste that just keep you wanting to come back for more. So what was the chocolate like I hear you ask? Well I would say it still wasn't of the highest standard, but it was definitely more to my liking than Niederegger's dark chocolate. Comparing like-for-like, the milk chocolate was more forthcoming with it's creamier, sweeter taste, and had more depth in comparison to the more subtle dark chocolate. Despite this greater flavour generation, the chocolate still allowed the marzipan to take centre stage, which was a positive thing given that the marzipan was supposed to be the star of the product anyway.
Overall I'm sure that it wont come to anyones surprise that I am labelling this as yet another triumph in the world of marzipan for our German friends Niederegger. As aforementioned in the previous paragraph there is probably nothing more that I can say or write to get the point across about how fantastic the quality of their marzipan is. In every single Niederegger review I write, I always bang on about the fact that I am no great fan of marzipan, but these guys continue to prove me wrong. Furthermore, this bar itself has made me think I have to reassess my preconceptions, as I actually found myself liking this milk chocolate variety more than the dark chocolate one which was not something I expected. The standard of the milk chocolate wasn't on the same level of the higher end chocolate manufacturers like Hotel Chocolat or Galler, but I found the cream based taste more exciting than the blander dark chocolate that Niederegger normally offer up. I'm probably coming off as a bit of a Niederegger 'fanboy' here, but I don't think anyone has an excuse not to at least give one of their products a try one day. This milk chocolate bar would be a cracking place to start.

How do you manage to get all these german chocolates all the time? I've never seen any of these Niederegger marzipan things in this country before. It's all getting a bit frustrating cause you keep saying how good they are grrrrrrr.
LOl mate you have gone from the sublime to the totally disinterested for me. That marathon flapjack thing yesterday couldn't have tempted me more but the marzipan today doesn't excite me at all.
You can't entertain my appetite everyday.
Ooooh yes I've been waiting for a milk chocolate version for ages this is good to see.
I always laugh when I see your other niederegger reviews and you say the chocolate is rubbish and not strong enough for you. The time I had it I thought it was too bitter lol.
If I ever see this milk chocolate one I will snap it up in a second. Thanks for the review.
Rxxx
9.5 for taste!!!! Wowzers you must have liked this one. I've never eaten anything from these people. I think I must change that soon if they are that good.
You know I'm not a fan of marzipan Jim so I will leave this one just for you lol.
I think marzipan is something my father likes but it very rarely eats it. Lol the marzipan layer is always the layer that I peel off my christmas cake. My mother always shouts at me for wasting it. Thank you for the review.
I hate marzipan but that photo of it oozing out the chocolate looks scrummy :) Lol It looks like a creme filling rather than a marzipan one.
If I tasted it I would probably like it a little less ;) That reflects well for your photos lol.
This looks tasty. Did you buy it in england or did you buy it in from germany?
I haven't tried that many marzipan products. I love the marzipan smell, though I'm not always crazy about the marzipan texture and the overall taste of the product will also be influenced by the chocolate and maybe some other fruit components. So I'm still undecided when it comes to marzipan.
You say that you liked the milk chocolate bar better than the dark chocolate one. I haven't tried Niederegger, but I feel the same about Ritter's marzipan bars - I liked this new (milk chocolate) orange-marzipan bar a lot better than their regular (dark chocolate) marzipan bar.
Have you ever seen any Szamos marzipan products? I tried a selection box this summer and I thought most of them were quite tasty.
Its interesting to see that you rate the plainer marzipans they make better than their flavoured ones.
I did see that collection of flavoured ones in a chocolate shop in my local town but they had it marked at £8 which I thought was well too steep. I think I will just be happy with the normal loaves which I buy on the odd occasion.
Why do we all only eat marzipan in the months of November and December? Lol it's like totally off everyones radar for 90% of the whole year and then suddenly we all go mad for it. It must have some sort of affinity with xmas I reckon.
Anything but a good score would have suprised me. ;-) But Nideregger definietly is one of the brands which make edible marzipan and in combinantion with good milk chocltae, I can imagnine this bar being indeed rather nice. :-) (however, made my own marzipan potatos over the weekend - unbeatable! ;-)
@ anon 07:27 - first paragraph: I was finally able to track down this milk chocolate variety in my local Waitrose - before you all ask it was £1.49 :D
Btw if anyone is looking for the mini bar selesction from Nideregger Jim reviewed a few weeks ago, Lakeland has them. As well as some other stuff from Nideregger.

STOP PRESS Jim says he likes a milk chocoalte thing more than a dark chocolate one. I never thought we would see the day :) I thought you were all tough and manly Jim? What happened to you ;)
Great review again. I will have to try this someday.
Awesome I've been on the look out for a milk chocolate variety from niederegger for yonks.
I did find it online but it said it was only on sale abroad. Has it made it's long awaited trip to the UK or did you buy it in like @golden asked you?
Marzipan isn't of any interest to me mate sorry.
If you have anymore marathon flapjacks lieing around though I will kindly send you any of the marzipan chocolates I get bought this christmas in exchange lol. Come on now, that is a deal you can't turn down.
Both my parents would love this but I dont have any wish to try this one today whatsoever. I dont see how you can say that you dont like marzipan but give it 9s for taste and texture. I think you must have been a closet marzipan fan all along Jim lol.
Jim sorry to go off topic a little but I thought everyone might be interested to know that you can now buy niederegger in sainsburys.
They dont stock this milk chocolate bar but they do have the dark chocolate one

No travelling to germany for your marzipan people :-)
You've not ever managed to tempt me towards a marzipan chocolate before today but you make this sound remarkable.
Its one of those chocolates that I might see in the shops but I would probably never buy because I will always be able to find something that I fancy some more. Who knows, one day my mind might change.
No Jim you cant follow up something like the marathon thing with another high scoring marzipan thing.
Thats two reviews in a row where you have given stuff over 8 and I haven't been interested in them. Im starting to think our tastes are very different lol. Its either that or you just love everything you try.
Tasty looking stuff Jim mate. Marzipan isn't something I buy often (if ever lol) but I will sure give this a go if I see it some day.
Lol did you see Arsenal last night? They got turned over again LOVE IT! I hope United have the same fate tonight :P
@Matt I was just thinking that earlier lol. The sales of marzipan must be well seasonal. I dont see or hear about it apart from around christmas time. Sales must go through the roof. I hope someone can explain why this is.
Thanks for the review Jim. The only thing I normally dont like about niederegger is the chocolate so this milk stuff might be more to my liking.
I dont know how you can say the dark chocoalte doesn't give you enough flavour. I find it too bitter for me.
Jim did you ever find a reliable source for buying the marzipan flavoured selection that these people make? Ever since I saw your review of it I have been keeping my eyes and ears open but the only place I have seen it is online on the German version of Ebay.
There is no way I will pay £10 for postage for it but Im desperate to buy it for someone I know for Christmas. HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!
I was going to email you about this the other day to ask if you had reviewed it. This is my fave niederegger choc by miles, glad you liked it.
Our tastes are so different its unbeleivable. You love coffee and marzipan and I cant stand them. If you can do less of those reviews that would be better. The majority of people wont want to see them.
Im 100% with you on this one Jim. Niederegger make the most amazing marzipan in the world, its criminal that so few people have ever heard of who they are.
We should keep them as our own little secret so we can keep all the marzipan for ourselves lol. No one will ever know why they are missing out on so its not that mean of us ;)
You haven't got yourself a fan of marzipan here unfortunately. I havent tried anything made by these people before but I honestly cant see them changing my mind.
Ignore that idiot mysterio Jim. Even though I dont like marzipan I still enjoyed reading your review. It would be boring if you just reviewed plain chocolates all the time.
How crazy I was just reading your nederegger marzipan reviews the other week and I meant to leave you a comment asking if they had ever done a milk chocolate version.
I think this would be better suited to me than the normal dark chocolate type. I dont like many dark chocolates and theirs doesn't sound like it is the best quality anyway. Thanks for the review Jim.
My boyfriend goes nuts for anything that has marzipan in it. I dont understand the fascination myself but each to their own lol.
Do you know anywhere that sells Niederegger online Jim? It would be good if I could get him some decent stuff for Xmas. Love your work thanks.
Despite trying a few Niederegger products I'm not really a convert. The other week I bought a Niederegger selection box at TK Maxx (very expensive, I forked out £7!), and although it was good it didn't justify the price. It was basically marzipan pieces with cream fillings - caramel cream, raspberry, and chocolate cream.
I must say though that the pieces with a milk choc coating were better than the dark choc ones, so I agree with you about that Jim.
Niederegger = best marzipan in the world. end of argument.
I haven't had Niederegger bars for a few months now, but I agree that their marzipan is quite good. Most marzipan bars are either too syrupy/liquid or too dry. This means that 1. the marzipan itself is gross and 2. the chocolate crumbles and breaks apart into a mess all over your hands. Not with Niederegger.
You may be used to me by now saying I'm not a marzipan fan however after your last Neideregger review, I spotted a whole selection of their products in Lakeland and was dithering about buying or not. In the end, I wussed out but I'm now seriously considering giving something a try (probably this milk chocolate variety)as all your reviews saying that you hated the stuff until you tried this brand has managed to convince me that I need to at least give these guys a go before writing off marzipan altogether. Though I have to say, the picture makes the bar look rather appealing too! Thanks again for a great review.
Hi All,
I know the marzipan reviews split peoples interest on this site but I couldn't resist reviewing this one when I happened across it. Just as I thought the milk chocolate broke down some of the barriers to trying Niederegger for some of you - I'm not surprised given the quality *term used loosely* of their dark chocolate.
Golden - Re: How do you manage to get all these german chocolates all the time?
This one I bought in this country. You can find Niederegger products in all sorts of outlets - a few have been mentioned today already like Sainsburys and Lakeland. They are well worth a gander in.
David / Kim / Sam / Steven / Lauren / Mysterio / Jamie - Re: Marzipan YUCK etc etc
Sorry to all you guy/girls that aren't interested in marzipan at all. I can't garuntee that all the products you see featured on here are always going to be of interest to you. I guess it's just a matter of luck. Who knows what tomorrow will bring :D
Kim - Re: the marzipan layer is always the layer that I peel off my christmas cake. My mother always shouts at me for wasting it.
I always used to do that myself. I think the dry crappy stuff you get on the supermarket christmas cake is the reason why I used to dislike the stuff.
Ana - Re:'Have you ever seen any Szamos marzipan products?'
No I hadn't actually. Shall I take this as a request? I wouldn't have the first clue about where I would source some from, but I will take a look if you are interested in a review.
Nigel - Re: I did see that collection of flavoured ones in a chocolate shop in my local town but they had it marked at £8 which I thought was well too steep.'
Where was that at? That is a astonishing price, I wouldn't advise you ever pay that chap. I think the RRP is £5.99 and you can always find things cheaper than that.
Matt / David - Re: Why do we all only eat marzipan in the months of November and December? Lol it's like totally off everyones radar for 90% of the whole year and then suddenly we all go mad for it. It must have some sort of affinity with xmas I reckon
Can I take a cop out answer on this one and just say because it's tradition!???? To be honest chap I don't have a clue if it is linked in any way to Christmas at all.
Anne - Re: Your comment
Homemade marzipan potatoes? Now that I like the sound of! Not so much the effort, but I bet they taste brilliant.
Thanks for letting everyone know about Lakeland. I will have to pop in my local one again soon to see if they have any other Niederegger goodies I can review. The liqueuer lovers loaves look well worth trying dont they.
Katie - Re: STOP PRESS Jim says he likes a milk chocoalte thing more than a dark chocolate one. I never thought we would see the day :) I thought you were all tough and manly Jim?
Must you take the mick out of me everyday :D I know you are only joking, there are plenty of milk chocolates that I prefer over loads of dark chocolates. I can appreciate a bit of everything me ... an all rounder you might say :D
Andrew - Re: Your comment
See what Ana says above chap. I did also say in the review I bought it in Waitrose ;)
Steven - Re: If you have anymore marathon flapjacks lieing around though I will kindly send you any of the marzipan chocolates I get bought this christmas in exchange lol.
Surprise surprise I don't have any lieing about the place :D You could always make use of the ChocolateMission discount you know ;)
Emma - Re: Niederegger in Sainburys
Nice spot I saw that the other myself. Its a great way for trying out their marzipan to see if you like it on the cheap.
Chris - Re: Its one of those chocolates that I might see in the shops but I would probably never buy because I will always be able to find something that I fancy some more. Who knows, one day my mind might change.
I would adivse you give it a try chap. You never know if you like something or not until you give it a chance.
Lauren - Re: Im starting to think our tastes are very different lol. Its either that or you just love everything you try.
Don't worry Im sure I will feature something soon that will tickle your fancy. I have to cover all bases on this website. I can't just cater for one audience given the regional/cultural differences of people that read.
Nigel - Re: Football
Indeed Arsenal did take a bit of a beating. I'm not holding out much hope for United tonight. I think Rangers might fancy it a bit more.
Forget the footie anyway chap! It's all about the cricket tonight!
Kevin / Kimberley - Re: Jim did you ever find a reliable source for buying the marzipan flavoured selection that these people make?
Check out that Lakeland online link that Ana has posted.
Francesca - Re: We should keep them as our own little secret so we can keep all the marzipan for ourselves lol
I think the majority of the rest of Europe are well aware how good these guys are. I think we would have a hard time stashing it for ourselves.
Phil - Re: Niederegger Selection
Well at least you have tried them for yourself chap and now know what you can expect. I'm glad you agree with me about the milk chocolate being better than the dark chocolate. They seriosuly need to make improvements on their dark chocolate quality to take themselves a step further.
I'm sorry to hear about your misfortune, but it's always good to hear you are trying different things.
The District Choco - Re: Marzipan
Good to see your visit wasn't a one off :D I hope you make this a habit. I agree with you about some of the pitfalls that can you get with marzipan. My own personal hatred for marzipan used to be born out of those dry, flavourless ones you buy in packets in the supermarkets.
Ria - Re: Purchase decision
If you see them again in Lakeland why not pick up one of the selection boxes to have a little try of what they offer. Alternatively you could go for that cheap small bar they do in Sainsburys now, that would be a good way of seeing if you like it before you spend a good deal of money on a larger pack. Let me know when you try it! I look forward to your expert views :D
Thanks for the comments today peoples! It is such a busy time with Christmas fast approaching - there are tons of reviews to write and a lot of chocolate to be tried. Great times :D
JIM
If you can find them, I'd be interested to know what you think about them, how they compare with other marzipan products that you've tried. On their website, they say their some of their products can be found in Auchan, Cora, INTERSPAR, Kaiser's, Metro, Spar, Tesco, Agip, Lukoil, MOL, OMV, Shell and the CBA, in particular CBA Prima, COOP, MATCH, REAL stores. I have an Auchan 15 minutes away (walking), a Real and quite a few petrol stations on the same street... but I could only find them in Cora.
