Kcal 540 Fat 32.1g Fat(sats) 20.2g Carbs 54.9g (per 100.0g)In what must be one of the most requested ChocolateMission reviews of all time, I today have the grand pleasure of bringing you all my candid views on the much publicised Marmite Very Peculiar Milk Chocolate. Having read reviews on websites such as Chocablog (See HERE) and by pal Liz at Foodstufffinds (See HERE), I finally managed to get hold of this much sought after chocolate to try for myself. First things first, Unilever have to be congratulated for the 'buzz' they have created about this chocolate. This Marmite flavoured bar has received wide recognition across the press, with everything from the initial trade articles (See HERE), to the national press generating a great deal of consumer interest (for evidence of that all you need to see is my e-mail inbox filled with requests!!).
I bought this bar from BHS for the price of £2.99 for a 100.0g tablet. On the exterior packaging the product came described as 'The milk chocolate bar by Marmite - Marmite flavour milk chocolate bar', 'Peculiar' sounding indeed, but at the same time very intriguing. In my opinion, Unilever did a pretty decent job with the wrapper. I can't imagine for one minute that this was completely top of mind when putting together their marketing mix for this product, fundamentally I think the people who are willing to try the chocolate in the first place aren't going to be put off with a non-snazzy box in any case. With that in mind I wasn't overly fussed by the non-decorative pattern work on the bar, to be honest my mind was preoccupied with the chocolatey scents emanating from the foil packet, as they offered a much stronger suggestion of Marmite than I was first expecting.
If you are a reader based outside of the UK you may want to catch up with the backstory behind Marmite before trying to understand the detail of the taste test I'm about to describe ... See HERE - thanks Wiki. Now everyone is up to speed it is worth me flagging to you all that I firmly sit in the 'Love It' camp when it comes to my views on this wonderful yeast based spread - suffice to say there aren't many mornings that pass without me indulging in a spot of toast laden with Marmite.
So being a Marmite 'Lover', what did I make of Marmite's Very Peculiar Milk Chocolate??? Well it was an experience to say the least. At the basis of the product there was fair to decent standard milk chocolate that established a decent milky sweet cocoa taste in the initial few seconds of each mouthful. In my first few blocks the Marmite influence was very, very minor and only raised the slightest of salty suggestions towards the back end of the aftertaste. As I made my way closer to the centre of the bar, the texture of the chocolate changed somewhat with what felt like small little crystallised balls roughening the melt of the free flowing chocolate. As the grittier texture became increasingly detectable, unsurprisingly so did the Marmite element, and in some blocks the flavours were really quite intense. Mixed with sweet chocolate, the Marmite element tasted contrastingly spice like, and delivered what I can only describe as an awkward oniony, herby taste in the mouth. Frankly it was pretty horrible, and far from the salty flavour experience that I desired - it certainly didn't leave me wanting to reach back in to the packet for more.
Overall I could probably talk about why this Marmite Chocolate should of, yet didn't work for an endless amount of time, but at the end of things I would always come to the same conclusion that this chocolate wasn't that nice. Looking at the ingredients list it appears Unilever chose to use Marmite flavouring as opposed to real deal Marmite - a somewhat puzzling decision, however it does explain the spiced notes of garlic and onion that I detected in the taste as both were included in the flavouring in powder form. Although I was excited about trying this chocolate I can't say I was all that disappointed by it, as my expectations were realistic in that it was going to be something to taste for an 'experience' rather than one to compete with the iconic Hotel Chocolat 85% dark chocolate. For that reason I would probably still buy it for friends who like Marmite and hadn't tasted it before, but I would probably warn them that it isn't that nice. Unilever have created a chocolate that wont be renowned for it's chocolate tasting prestige, but one that is worth trying 'just to see what it's like' and I would recommend you do on that basis alone. I can't promise you guys will like this chocolate, but I can promise you will be glad to have at least given it a go and laid your mind to rest to what Marmite flavoured chocolate would actually taste like :D

Ew, they put powdered onion in the chocolate? I imagined this chocolate to be smokey, salty, a bit savory, but not onion-y! Haha. Kind of disappointing considering all the hype. :/
Lol I absolutely hate marmite but I've been awaiting your ruling on this bar. I have heard from a few marmite fans now that it doesn't taste like it at all. I dont understand how the company who make it can fowl up making the marmite bit.
No no noooooooo!! Jim you shocker. The thought of just trying a marmite chocolate turns my stomach, you've nearly managed to put me off my breakfast.
Here I was thinking you were a sensible guy and now you own up to liking marmite. My views on you as a person are forever spoilt ;)
Thank you for the review Jim! I've been waiting to see what you were going to say about this for yonks. Why do you think they didn't use real Marmite? The taste of onion and chocolate doesn't sound appealing in the slightest.
I still need to try and find this chocolate to try for my own. Does anyone have a proper list of outlets where I can buy it? From what I hear it can be bought in BHS and Waitrose???? Three quid isn't massively expensive to try something out but it's cheap for chocolate is it.
Lol I think I know what you mean when you say it's one of those things that is only going to be worth trying once.
Its like I know I'm not going to like it, but at the same time I'm desperate to give it a go because I like chocolate and marmite on their own.
I tried Marmite once and I swear I was ill because of it.
I think I can safely say this is not a chocolate that will ever my grace my lips. You telling me that it tastes of sweet chocolate and onion powder isnt exactly doing much for me either lol.
Rxxx
Woop wooop Marmite ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!
Someone tell me where to buy this I beg you.
You poor boy having to eat this. I envy you most the time getting to eat all those tasty hotel chocolat and ritter chocolates but today I'm glad this was left up for you to try. It sounds like it tastes god awful.
Awww no! I love Marmite!
What a shame they didn't make it work out. I thought it was a pretty horrible mixture when I first heard about it but then I thought that mixture of salt and sweetness might be good. Shame on you Unilever.
That was nearly enough to make me gag!!! This sounds so disgusting Jim. I think I might buy some and test it out on my brother :) That'll teach him to eat all my nice chocs.
Oh come on did you honestly ever think for one moment that this was going to be nice? This had gimmick written all over it from day 1. If you honestly believed they were going to bother making a nice chocolate you are delusional.
Marmite is awesome but I'm not surprised to see that a marmite chocolate isn't what the doctor ordered :) Well done for trying it though mate.
You must have been happy with your result last night Jim? Any win like that away in Europe is a good result.
When I first read about this chocolate coming out, I was realy keen to try eat. Then I read the reviews on foodstuff finds and chocoblog and was rather put off. I was also disappointed that they had used Marmiet flavouring rather than actual Marmite.
I think now that you have also given it a rather mediocre rating, I will just forget about it. Instead I will safe those £3 for a trip to London next year and sample Paul A Young's Marmite creation.
Thank you for reviewing this bar!
In NZ I used to be a big fan of Vegemite but since moving to the UK I have never thought Marmite is a good enough substitute. For that reason alone I think I will just take your judgement and leave this one well alone. Thank you for the great review Jim.
I am so desperate to try this it's unreal. I went to my nearest Robert Dyas the other day but the person behind the counter thought I was barking mad asking for if they had any marmite chocolate. I swear he was pushing the security button, he looked at me like I had just escaped a mental asylum lol.
Dx
Marmite = Awesome
Chocolate = Mega Awesome
Marmite + Chocolate = No thank you!!!!!! Uncalled for.
Yay you reviewed it :-)
Its annoying hearing they didn't use real marmite to flavour it. They should have used the new Marmite XO stuff. Thats extra strong marmite if you didn't know ;)http://images.foodepedia.co.uk/food/2010/march/mcith/mcith_marmite_XO_300.jpg
I never thought you were going to be able to top soy bacon but you went and did it with this one.
I can't think of anything else in the world that I would rather not be in my chocolate. Marmite makes me feel sick. It was interesting review though so dont worry about that.
This sounds pants. You should just buy up a bar of that 85% chocolate, spread some real marmite on it and then tell us what that is like.
DIY MARMITE CHOCOLATE if you will.
My friend let me try a bit of this the other day and I can confirm it is as horrible as Jim says it is. The piece I had didn't taste of marmite much but I did get a sense of it lingering in my mouth afterward. I thought it was so bad I had to wash my mouth out with coke. I wouldn't recommend it.
The I love marmite group was the first one I joined on Facebook :-D lol I am mad keen on it and eat it everyday but I haven't been able to buy this chocolate yet.
I've have been keeping an eye out for it on ebay but it is full of rogue traders trying to make people pay over £5 for just a single bar :( I hope I get to try it before it goes out of stock everywhere. Can anyone help me please.
You are either completely bonkers or brave kid. You wouldn't get me trying this in month of sundays. Marmite is the devils food lol.
The Paul young one that they review on Chocablog sounds like it could be loads better. Are you going to try that or are you a bit sick of marmite chocolate now lol?
You are either brave, stupid or dedicated to bringing your readers the best chocolate reviews ever :) I'm going to suck up to you and say it's the last one lol
As crazy as this all sounds I think I would try a little bit just to see what it tastes like.
Dude seriously!! Here I am trying to eat my brekkie and you put this in front of me! Not cool man.
My parents always tried to make me try Marmite when I was small but I point blank refused to it because of the smell alone. Why anyone would want to put black tar on toast or anything is beyond me.
Great review Jim. I saw this talked about in the newspaper a few weeks ago and I thought of you at the time. It didn't take you long getting your review up =}
I admire your bravery trying this Jim. I don't think I would ever be able to bring myself to eating it in any great quantity though I might give it a nibble if someone offered me a piece. Thanks for the review it was really fun.
Cracking review Jim it was a very fun read. I am always open to trying new foods and different flavour combinations but this one would be the most bizarre I would ever have tried.
The only surprise for me is that it hasn't been attempted by Zotter yet.
Some of these comments have had me lol'ing IRL =) It's so funny hearing people talk about about Marmite because its so true what they say about loving or hating it.
I can almost feel the hatred pouring out of the keyboard from the likes of Rachel and Kim lol.
I'm not at all surprised to see this scoring badly lol. This is one of those chocolates that I see on here and in odd way want to try even though I know I wont like it. I dont hate Marmite to the extent that some people do but I always choose to have Jam or PB whenever I have toast. Top review Jim thanks.
Where can I buy this and how much does it cost?
Onion powder and garlic? Thats not marmite!!!!
Why on earth didn't they just use the real spread rather than trying to recreate it using flavourings? It sounds like a bizarre way to go out things if you ask me.
The only way you could have made this one sound any worse is by putting coffee or something like that in there. I never have and never will like Marmite with anything. Putting it with chocolate is so stupid.
Aw that is disappointing it didn't taste legit. It reminds me of Simon Cowell's comment, chocolate ice cream and an onion = fail lol. I love the Wonkaesque name though. I didn't know Unilever did chocolate, they need to join Chocri & HC and gather CM's expert feedback in their chocolate department ;)
Cool review Jim I was wondering what you were going to make of it. I haven't tried it yet myself but I will hopefully be doing so very soon.
I love marmite on buttery toast. Mmmmmm nothing can beat it.
This doesn't really appeal to me at all. And it's so pricey! I agree with the others, it seems odd that they used flavourings rather than actual marmite.
Another interesting review, thanks. I've been looking forward to what you had to say about this chocolate. However, I can safely say this is one item that will keep my pockets a little fuller as I'm giving this bar a wide berth. The review went the way I expected. It's definitely a novel idea but as a "hater" it has no appeal to me.
Hey Jim, I came across a story about a Thorntons employee causing damage to Hotel Chocolate truffles. It's from 2007 but it made me laugh:

Hi All,
Are there no Marmite lovers on this website at all??? :D It seems that this chocolate has evoked more negative feelings than it has positive ones.
There has been a big response to this bar today, but luckily a lot of you are saying the same thing so I can answer you on mass :D
Rachel / David / Eric / Rosa / Aimee / Shaf / Phil - Re: Marmite flavouring versus Real Deal Marmite
Indeed it was a very odd decision not to use real Marmite, I still dont understand it myself. Looking at the ingredients list sure did reveal an odd concoction of things to generate the Marmite flavour.
Kim - Re: My views on you as a person are forever spoilt ;)
Thats a bit harsh isn't it :D I hope that winky signifies you are joking.
Golden / Anon Re: Where can I buy this?
"Marmite lovers will be able to buy the chocolate for £3 from October 4 at department stores including BHS, Debenhams and Robert Dyas, and online at the Marmite website"
Francesca - Re: I envy you most the time getting to eat all those tasty hotel chocolat and ritter chocolates but today I'm glad this was left up for you to try.
You have to take the rough with the smooth doing this job :D
Katie - Re: This sounds so disgusting Jim. I think I might buy some and test it out on my brother :) That'll teach him to eat all my nice chocs.
Thats a bit mean of you :D You never know it might backfire on you and he might like it.
Alex - Re: Oh come on did you honestly ever think for one moment that this was going to be nice? This had gimmick written all over it from day 1. If you honestly believed they were going to bother making a nice chocolate you are delusional.
A pleasure as always I see :D I tried it because I was a) Curious and b) had it requested countless times.
Nigel - Re: You must have been happy with your result last night Jim?
Indeed. Our professional result was overshadowed by Spurs somewhat though.Good on them I say.
Anne / Harry / Ryan - Re: Paul Youngs Marmite XO chocolate
After trying this bar and complaining about it not using real Marmite I really do have to try the Paul Young bar to see if it is actually superior :D I will try my best to get that review up soon - be on the look out for it.
Marshall - Re: Vegemite
I've never been as keen on Vegemite as I have been Marmite. I have tried it a few times but I think it's just a case of sticking with what I know.
Daisy - Re: Robert Dyas
Haha that story did make me laugh. It's not exactly the typical sort of product they sell is it? Do you think they merchandise it amongst the hedge trimmers?
Peter - Re: I never thought you were going to be able to top soy bacon but you went and did it with this one.
Trust me the soy bacon was about a hundred times worse.
Anon - Re: DIY MARMITE CHOCOLATE
I dont think I would try that with a chocolate as good as HC's 85% bar.
Martin - Re:"I am mad keen on it and eat it everyday"
At last a fellow Marmite lover :D I'm not alone. I wouldn't go as far as buying it off ebay chap, this is not worth £5 of anyones money. I'm sure there will be plenty of stock in the shops ..... infact I am very sure there will be plenty of stock around ;) I'm informed you see :D
Estelle / Kieran / Colin - Re: I admire your bravery trying this Jim
Haha I don't think I will be winning any purple hearts :D It was just chocolate.
Paul - Re:"The only surprise for me is that it hasn't been attempted by Zotter yet"
Funny you should mention Zotter they sent me a whole new batch of chocolates last week.
Duncan - Re: "I can almost feel the hatred pouring out of the keyboard from the likes of Rachel and Kim lol."
Marmite does bring out some strong feelings in people doesn't it :D It has been funny reading through some of the comments today. I cant believe the extent to which some people hate Marmite ... actually I can haha
Tom - Re: I always choose to have Jam or PB whenever I have toast
Have you never tried both?
Mysterio - Re: The only way you could have made this one sound any worse is by putting coffee or something like that in there
Granted marmite coffee would be disgusting.
Thea - Your Comment
Haha that would be one awful ice cream. Like I said in the review I really dont think Unilever are going to care about how this bar tastes. I think they made it solely to get some PR coverage for Marmite and get people talking about the brand. To be honest they have done a bloody good job of it :D
Phil - Re: Price
Indeed! £3 for a chocolate bar is an awful lot when the greater likelyhood is that you aren't going to like it :D
Ria - Re: Your comment
Well at least you feel like you made a cost saving today eh!? If I posted about Hotel Chocolat everyday you might be feeling like you are going to be significantly lighter in the pocket by the end of Christmas :D
Thanks for the comments today everyone. It's great seeing so many of you write so passionately about Marmite, even if the feedback hasn't been all that positive. If any of you give it a try I would really welcome your comments and your own thoughts about it.
JIM
review the paul young bar it sounds like it's ten times better than this rubbish. A Marmite chocolate bar without any real marmite in it? Yeah that makes sense.
I'ma bit late with this reply! lol I hate Marmite so I wouldnt want to try this but I like the wrapper. Interestingly this isn't an entirely new concept - did you know in the 1930's they actually made Oxo chocolate? and Oxo Toffees? They also made Bovril Chocolate and Toffees! Bizarre as it sounds it was apparently very popular and aimed at anyone wanting nourishment and energy (sportsmen, walkers, cyclists etc and anyone who had been ill. Or anyone who just wanted to eat it lol)It kinda fitted in the 'Horlicks' catergory.
Grant - Don't worry the Paul Young Bar is definitely on my radar.
Alan - Thats really interesting to hear I had no idea there was some sort of legacy behind these sort of chocolates!? This is a pretty ridiculous question to ask given it was way back when in the 1930s, but are there any photos/pictures of these products about?
JIM
Believe it or not there is lol heres a postcard for Bovril Chocolate
http://www.flickr.com/photos/salfordandmanchester/4882084514/in/photostream/
and amazingly an original vending machone for Oxo chocolate!

I'll have to email you some pics I've got of the bars. I want to visit the Museum of Brands in London, set up by Robert Opie, its a history of consumerism inc chocolate! He's also the one behind all the postcards and books and such like you get with reproduction images on. :)
Alan - Interesting stuff chap! Unilever still own Bovril aswell so who knows ... one day we might see a beef stock flavoured chocolate :D I would be interested to see those pictures of yours. Be sure to send them along to my e-mail.
Cheers
JIM
Saw these today in Robert Dyas on a 2 for £5 offer. (Though why anyone would want 2 of these is beyond me :D)
Thea - Robert Dyas? Well, since it's a perculiar chocolate, I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that it is being sold in a peculiar place.
I'm disappointed to that that they didn't use real marmite, it probably would have tasted nicer if they did. I really want to try this just to see what it is like, but I have never seen them (Not even in Robert Dyas).
