November 6/7th: '7Days of Chocolate Reviews' - Edition 59

SITE UPDATE

Hi All,

Another week has passed on the ChocolateMission and to recap we learnt the following ... Ritter Sport love making chocolates with hazelnut in (See HERE), Hotel Chocolat make so damn good chocolate covered fruits (See HERE), Unilever's Marmite flavoured chocolate needs a bit of work (See HERE) and lastly J-List is back on the ChocolateMission map and they have all new Pocky (See HERE).

Thanks for all the comments and inputs this week - they were all as interesting and welcome as ever, please keep them coming. For the '7Days of Chocolate Reviews' post today I haven't had the greatest amount of time to compile all the news stories together. If I have missed anything please be sure to share it. Additionally if you have any product requests for any new or existing products you have seen recently then please feel free to drop me a note.

Next week we have more Ritter Sport, Hotel Chocolat and the return on 'Bits n Bobs' - apologies for the lack of BnB post this week (the Marmite Chocolate skipped the review line!).

Thanks everyone. Have a great weekend and enjoy the firework displays - stay safe ;D

I think I have seen godo chocolate before but I can't remember where. I think it might have been when I was on holiday abroad or something. I've been to france and germany in the last two years so it could have been one of them.
Thanks for the reviews Jim. I look forward to some more Hotel Chocolat next week.

When it comes to the time of placing my hotel chocolat order I'm going to make sure I get some smaller bits for myself. I loved their caramel chocolate slab so much its pretty likely that those tiddly santas may well make their way in to my shopping basket.

Cool reviews this week jim thank you. The best was definitely the marmite one. That was well funny seeing everyones reaction to it lol.

I hope that new MD at Thorntons knows more of what he is doing than that last one. I think Thorntons have really lost their way in the last few years. They now make too much rubbish and sell it in too many places. They need to make their chocolate more up market and exclusive again if you ask me.

Graeme said...

Jim have you seen the new Aero limited editions? They have a new dark chocolate bar out I tried it yesterday. Will you be doing a review for us?

Simon said...

I'm not being critical of your review but I think those santas chocolates are pretty boring. I remember last year that Hotel chocolate made those well nice limited edition slabs with marzipan and everything. This year the whole range just comes across as well plain. There aren't any flavoured chocolates that you would count as new :( I think its a bit disappointing myself.

Tricky said...

Lol Jim did you see this news story in the sun this week. They are saying that chocolate contains a chemical that gets you addicted. I think its more the taste that does it. The sun are so stupid.

When are the new Heavenly Cake reviews coming along then Mr?

You have been promising them to us for weeks now. Get on it ;)

Andrew said...

Hey Jim,
Cheers for the posts this week they were all top notch again. Are you going to be posting a bit and bobs one next week? I noticed it was missing for the first time in a while this week.

Thank you

Mmmmmm I want to bite the head of that chocolate santa. They look well yummy.

Warren said...

Well this is a first. I don't believe I have ever seen or heard anyone complaining about having too much chocolate from hotel chocolate before. Lol you should consider yourself lucky, the rest of us can hardly afford the postage.

Matt said...

I like the look of the santa shaped chocolates they look like they have been moulded really nicely. Normally when you get chocolates like that they resemble the things you see on the packaging in shape but then they lack all the detail that these have. They almost look too nice to eat :-) lol scrap that they wouldn't last a second in my hands.

Henry said...

Oh what a surprise!! Mars are hardly treating everyone for Xmas this year are they. I mean come on! Red and green peanut M&Ms are hardly anything new.

They make the same things every single year. Their idea of innovation is using different food colourings. Its so so boring.

Jo said...

The santa chocs are so cute I love them already. Eugh I could spend all day looking over all the tasty chocolates at hotel chocolat. I think I need some help lol I need to stop looking at their site and just buy something.
Have a nice fireworks weekend Jim.

Nigel said...

8.6 for just a small review? Wow they have to be nice.

My predictions this week

Man u 3 - 0 Wolves
Liverpool 1 - 1 Chelsea

Lol you will win easily but I'm less confident about us getting a draw. I think Chelsea might steam roll us.

Lucy said...

If you are taking suggestions could you please review a terrys old gold box? I haven't had one for years but I keep seeing them on deal in the supermarkets. It would be nice to know if they are still any good or if they are now pants.

Ana said...

Bite the head? Oh, that's cruel. I feel a little guilty when eating chocolate that represents something like a reindeer or a snowman or a bunny or a lamb or a bird...

Chocolate and chips? I first thought about these when I saw that line.

Anonymous said...

Well duh. Marmite chocolate was always going to be horrible.

Jim, I mostly love your posts but the constant bigging up of anything by hotelChocolate is getting a bit tiring, I know that there logos are plastered all over the site but a little more impartiality in future would be great!

About that Aero promotion, I see they have created a facebook for it:

http://www.facebook.com/notes/aero-bubbly-chocolate/introducing-a-loveabubble-tale/166804136671597

It's quite cringeworthy, they've created characters called Romeaero and Juliaero, lol!

@Henry - I thought the same when I saw those bags of M&M's, what a con!

Thea said...

@Ana lol I have the same problem, with anything that has a face... Those santas are really cute.

Saw these for the first time at the farmers' market - chocolate flavored jams!

Ryan said...

@Anon Do you not like Hotel Chocolat chocolate then? I don't see why Jim is supposed to give something a low score just because they send him a lot of things to review. He doesn't rate all of their chocolate highly either.

Colin said...

Is there anything different about those M&Ms apart from the colour of them?
If not that is so typical of Mars in the uk.

Ben said...

Did we ever find out where the oreos came from?

Ria said...

Thanks once again for another great week of reviews. I didn't mean to keep everyone hanging on in suspense about the Oreos yesterday, honest! (Sorry folks) Hope Thorntons manage to turn things around a little and start focusing on producing quality products. As for those Santas, their caranel chocolate is pretty damn tasty but these look too well crafted to eat.

On a side note, Man U left it late as usual but the least said about my #1 team the better. Total shambles, an embarrassment to pro football.

Ria said...

For those who didn't look back to yesterday's post, The Oreos were from Asda of all places. :)

Phil said...

Wow Asda, so they ARE in the UK then :)

PS Linda in case you read this, I think you were a fellow non-Twitter competition requester, well apparently you can use it without a mobile and sign up for it via the web, I just did. Hopefully this counts for competitions as well :D

Stu said...

Of course you can use twitter on a web browser. That was what it was originally designed for lol.

Jim you haven't run a competition for ages now nudge nudge wink wink ;0 ;0

Hi All,

Thanks for all the positive comments again this week. I have a load of stuff to get uploaded to the site for upcoming reviews this evening so apologies if my answers are a little short.

Rachel / Colin - Re: Where did you buy the M&M's - I bought the M&Ms in Tesco.

Kim - Re: I hope that new MD at Thorntons knows more of what he is doing than that last one

I think you are spot on. I hope he works on the brand equity of Thorntons, they have been absuing it for years now.

Graeme - Re:'Jim have you seen the new Aero limited editions?'

I have heard of it but not seen it. Of course if I do a review will follow don't worry about that :D

Simon - Re: 'I remember last year that Hotel chocolate made those well nice limited edition slabs with marzipan and everything'

They were great those festive slabs weren't they. I wish they had brought them back out this year. The marzipan one you mention was fantastic like you say.

Tricky - Re:'Lol Jim did you see this news story in the sun this week.'

Haha I think that chemical is the least of everyones problems when it comes to chocolate. I can imagine it would have to take a complete chocoholic to eat excessive amounts for it to make an impact.

Katie - Re:'When are the new Heavenly Cake reviews coming along then Mr?

Delivery is booked in for Tuesday so any time after then.

Andrew - Re:' Are you going to be posting a bit and bobs one next week?'

Indeed it will return this week.

Henry - Re:'Oh what a surprise!! Mars are hardly treating everyone for Xmas this year are they'

I haven't seen what else they are offering yet so I will pass up commenting until I know. The M&M's wasn't the most exciting though no.

Nigel - Re: Your predictions

They don't look to far off this week. United sure struggles against Wolves though. We were very very lucky to get a victory there.

Lucy - Re: could you please review a terrys old gold box?'

I don't see why not. It's not something I have reviewed yet.

Ana - Re: Your comment

I thought you had posted some chocolate covered potato chips then. They are always something I have been meaning to try - after all chocolate covered pretzels are decent.

Jim said...

Anon - Re: Jim, I mostly love your posts but the constant bigging up of anything by hotelChocolate is getting a bit tiring, I know that there logos are plastered all over the site but a little more impartiality in future would be great!

I am totally impartial. If I don't like something I don't rate it highly. Trust me if you have been looking at the site for long enough you will have noticed that.

Phil - Re: Facebook

Brands are doing more and more with facebook now. I think it might be the death of it. What was once a place to be social is now being slowly but surely taken over by commercial people. I don't use it myself anymore.

Thea - Re: Chocolate Jams

Am I being stupid? I can't see the chocolate jams on that page :S

Ria - Your comment

Don't be silly you can only look at the site when you can. You still managed to answer on the same day :D I'm sure everyone appreciated it.

The less said about Aberdeen yesterday the better eh!? Haha That was a bit of a landslide :D

Thea / Stu - Re: Twitter

Indeed Twitter can be used online and not just through iphones etc. Get involved it's actually really good fun.

As for a competition? Well ok since you hinted so subtly haha :D I will see what I can do this week.

Thanks everyone - I hope you all had fun with the fireworks this weekend.

re: jams sorry it's buried way down the page lol! There aren't any pics, so I'll summarize it:

1st March 2009
Lin being a "great" lover of Chocolate has decided to produce a limited range of fresh fruit jams, but with added Belgium Chocolate. She has therefore created a selection of preserves in 45ml jars and packed them in a presentation sleeve called the "Chocolate Fruit Jam Selection"

1) Strawberry And Belgium Chocolate
2) Banana And Belgium Chocolate
3) Lime, Coconut And Belgium Chocolate
4) Toffee Apple And Belgium Chocolate

-----
The seller told me they make the jams, and then melt the chocolate and mix it in. The flavors I saw included the first two, chestnut, and raspberry (both with milk chocolate), and pear, and blueberry (both with white chocolate).
