Kcal 495 Fat 26.3g Fat(sats) 11.0g Carbs 56.2g (per 100.0g)Today I bring you the second of my three Ritter Sport 2010 Winter-Kreation bar reviews, showcasing this Oragen-Marzipan variant. Last week I kicked off my latest series of Ritter Sport posts by sharing my thoughts on the Nuss in Nugatcreme bar (if you missed it See HERE). This second helping of Ritter winter goodness sounded a little more exciting in terms of it's proposition, and came described as 'milk chocolate with orange marzipan (44.0%)'. As ever the rest of my family were keen as mustard trying out a new Ritter Sport flavour. My father's passion for anything containing marzipan only further made their opinions for this review an inevitability.
Nicking this line directly from my review last week 'All three of these new Winter-Kreation flavours come up in the standard 100.0g size aswell as the mini block format for those that prefer their chocolate in more manageable sizes' (I told you I would just cut and paste haha!!). As you can see the packaging was also broadly consistent, though had the obvious adaptation of the secondary orange colour scheme and relevant marzipan pictures. When unsealed the plastic packet released an appetising set of fruity orange smells that mixed well with the more familiar Ritter milk chocolate scents. As expected the the marzipan filling looked well portioned sandwiched between layers of exterior chocolate layers.
Before tasting this bar both my father and I expressed our surprise that Ritter had chosen to use a milk chocolate coating as opposed to the usual dark chocolate that coats their standard marzipan offering. Given that this is probably my thirtieth Ritter Sport review that has used the same milk chocolate, I wont go full on in to the micro detail of the taste, but I can say that our preconceived concerns about the pairing of milk chocolate and marzipan were ill founded. Ultimately the chocolate was nothing more, nothing less than it's sweet, generic milky self. The word 'generic' may sound bad, but as ever this wasn't such a bad thing for this Ritter bar, as it allowed greater expression of the inner filling which was frankly very good. Texture wise it was just about right in terms of moistness and viscosity, and importantly avoided that dry, grainy cloying mouth feel that can be associated with cheaper quality marzipan. Flavour wise it was equally as enjoyable, with the juicy, orange influence coming straight to the party amongst the more subtle almond nut taste. Four chunks of this chocolate was a more than satisfying amount to eat at one time - I'm not sure that having any more than that in a sitting it would be quite as enjoyable.
Overall although this wasn't the best ever Ritter Sport flavour I think it is one that is well suited to the time of year, and it will certainly please many a consumer this Christmas time. It would have been interesting to see whether the filling would have been better matched with an outer portion of dark chocolate, but ultimately the milk chocolate did a more than satisfactory job, and despite initial concerns it carried the fruity flavoured marzipan with the same efficiency that it has done for other Ritter flavours. Whilst it may not be have been perfection by Ritter, this was still a very competent flavoured offering and the orange twist proved to be a very welcome bit of flavour development on the already very competent marzipan. Like I always do, I have left the 'best until last' for my reviews of this Ritter Sport Winter-Kreation range. This Orangen-Marzipan was great, but expect even better things to come next week when I review the last bar in this years winter collection.

The orange flavour sounds good but I'm not enthused by the prospect of marzipan. Lol I take back what I said about them running out of ideas for flavours last week. This one is a different from anything they have released before.
Top review Jim. The marzipan bar that ritter make is like the only one of theirs I ever see in the shops so I have tried it a few times before.
I don't think it is the nicest marzipan I have ever had but it would be cool to see what an orange one is like.
The marzipan in the middle looks like it is well nice. I love the way that Ritter make all their chocolate bars look the same :) the classical look of the square and the way they make their wrapper is so cool.
Great review Jim thank you. Marzipan isn't something I like but I know plenty of people that do so I think I could easily offload it if I bought all of the new bars. I lol'd at your cut and past line about the sizes, you must have said that about Ritter sport chocolates hundreds and hundreds of times now. It might not have been a flavour I liked but I enjoyed the review thank you.
Rxxx
Eww no marzipan! If ritter ever choose to make more flavours in Britain I hope they leave ones like this behind in germany.
This sounds well lush. I've had a look through loads of your ritter reviews and I can't see another one that uses orange as a flavour! Is it not very popular in that country or something?
If any of our brands ever bother making new chocolates it always seems to be one of the first flavours they choose to make. Orange chocolates are well popular in the UK I think.
Are you going to be raffle-ing any of these ritter sports bars off Jim? I remember you saying you got sent huge boxes of them. If you do something on like twitter or facebook can you update the review please :) I dont want to miss it lol.
This looks nice.
Sorry to go off topics straight away but has anyone seen or heard what milka are doing for christmas this year? Are they making any special bars like ritter have?
As nice as this sounds I just get sad when I see these chocolates because I know I will never be able to try them for myself :( I'm not exactly the greatest fan of marzipan but I would love trying an orange flavoured one.
I remember you reviewing a niederegger orange flavoured marzipan last month jim. Which did you find was the better?
Great review jim I love seeing these Ritter chocolates. It's amazing isn't it how one company can innovate like 12 bars in one year. It would take the likes of mars in this country about 20 years to make that amount of new flavours lol.
God dammit it's so annoying that ritter sport are only big in Germany. I seemingly only find their chocolates in the weirdest of places. We used to have this corner shop near me that bought in quite a few foriegn foods for all the foriegn workers that lived in our area. They used to have the widest selection of ritter sport bars ever but back then I wasn't interested in trying any of them.
Now that shop has closed down so I don't have the chance to try them all. Its so annoying.
Thanks for the review Jim I'm loving your work with the photographs as normal. It's really worth it putting the effort in there, I think we all appreciate being able to properly see what is inside the chocolate, not just the wrapper that goes with it. If you compare your photo to what they show on the front it is well accurate. Thats always cool to see.
I like marzipan but I wouldn't want it flavoured with any type of fruit.
The only flavoured marzipan I think is worth making is just making nuttier by putting bits of nuts in there. Marzipan is supposed to be nutty, not fruity and sweet.
Where is my Hotel Chocolat monday boy? There used to be a time when a week wouldn't go by without us getting a HC review to start our weeks off ;-) we don't want this dodgy german stuff clogging up the blog thank you very much.
LMAO before anyone over reacts I'm only joking around. I love seeing the new ritter flavours. I think you love Ritter a bit too much though Jim :-)
You have a great blog here. Do you review a new chocolate everyday? That is mad.
Overall although this wasn't the best ever Ritter Sport flavour I think it is one that is well suited to the time of year, and it will certainly please many a consumer this Christmas time.
Translation: Its not the best but its bloomin worth eating for christmas :-)
Whilst it may not be have been perfection by Ritter, this was still a very competent flavoured offering and the orange twist proved to be a very welcome bit of flavour development on the already very competent marzipan.
Translation: It's not as good as the other german marzipan people but it's still good lol.
I would try it if I had a chance.
I've been scouting out ebay for the last couple of months looking for a reliable seller of ritter. I haven't found one that sells all of the new flavours but I do notice that some people have some of them up from time to time. It is worth keeping an eye on for anyone that is thinking of buying them direct from Germany at great expense.
Thank you for the review Jim, Awesome and detailed as you always make it.
I like that you have prepped us with a teaser about the last one of these winter chocs being the best. I'm going to try avoid seeing what flavour it is so it comes as a surprise. Lol the amount I look at christmas chocs I bet I come across it before your review though.
This ritter flavour looks nice. It wouldn't be the first one I would want to try out but if I had the chance I would give it a go.
My predictions weren't far wrong this weekend were they lol. I would never have said we were going to beat chelsea beforehand. I thought we would get something but I thought that you would think I was mad if I put that before. Man u were well lucky AGAIN.
Ho hum just another ritter flavour that I couldn't buy even if I wanted to.
These German people are obessed with their nuts.
Hi Jim,
I have a news scoop for you. For 2011 ritter sport are making a bar that is made of white chocolate and cornflakes. Had you heard that?
Beth
Oh fantastic another ritter sport flavour that sounds awesome but I will never get a chance to eat :( Eugh these things are always so depressing to see. I better get back to my boring kit kat.
Whats actually stopping ritter sport from bringing more of their chocolate to the UK? I've never understood why we have such a limited amount of their flavours.
oooh yum this one sounds very yummy. I think I would like this one more than their normal marzipan because it has milk choc and not their normal dark choc. The red marzipan is still like the only one I see in the shops. It used to be that one and the milk choc with hazelnuts but now I can never even see the hazelnut one about. One of the supermarkets should take a chance of them and buy their whole lot in.
Hmmm I don't think I like the idea of mixing orange and marzipan together. I wouldn't know until I tried it but I think I would prefer that the two are kept separate.
I look forward to your last review in the set. @Beth that new flavour sounds wicked. Please review it ASAP jim.
Why is this chocolate so much lower in calories then anything else you review? People are going to think I'm a saddo for noticing but its not often I see a chocolate have less than 500 cals in 100 grams.
For this reason alone I would try this chocolate lol.
This sounds nice in a 'pleasant but not groundbreaking' sort of way, if you know what I mean. I'm a little indifferent to marzipan to be honest, I'll eat it but wouldn't go out of my way for it. The Niedregger espresso was nice though.
@Beth - That sounds interesting, I've always thought someone should try doing a white chocolate marzipan.
I do love the wrapper on these bars. They still feel nicely christmassy but they are a nice break from the token snowflakes and cheap santas. The blue colour is so nice.
It's nice to see Ritter make something like this. I think the only other orange chocolate was the orange liqueur cream one. I think that out of the two, I'd prefer the orange liqueur one, but orange-marzipan is also a nice combination.
@Lucy: check this - they have a Christmas collection, but most of it is not new.
This isn't a flavour that interests me tbh. I wish ritter would start making more white chocolates. The only one I have ever had the chance to try was the other with hazelnuts in and I had to pick most the nuts out because they tasted funny.
You would of thought with it being their christmas range they would have tried to have made more white chocolates but never do :(
I'm a little disappointed with the two that you have showed us so far. Both of them are just flavours they have already made in some form previously.
I just would of thought they would have tried to have made something a little more new personally. Oh well, there is still one flavour to come :-) I hope it is a lot different to what we have seen so far.
Another great review Jim :) I love reading them everyday thank you! This sounds nice but, as Phil says, its not something i'd rush out to buy although I'd be happy to try or eat it.
@Craig - do you think? I'm not so sure. Orange as a flavour seems to be diminishing these days.. Aero Orange has gone, Cadburys Orange has gone, the Orange Chips has gone.. lol its one of my favourite flavours but it seems to be overtaken by Mint atm.
I think this sounds lovely. Its definitely one that I would buy if I ever saw it on sale in the shops.
Craig I think we don't have that many orange chocolates around these days. The only mass marketed one I can think of is Terrys.
Woo bloody hoo. Another bar that 99% of people reading this aren't even going to be able to buy. Do you think there is even a point to your writing about it? It's boring to see.
Great review again, thanks. I think I've mentioned a few times that I wasn't keen on Ritter's normal marzipan effort when I tried it previously but this bar actually temps me. I'd probably give it a go if I ever seen it as the orange and milk chocolate might work in my favour. Plus, I couldn't resist the packaging, I'm a sucker for anything that shade of blue. I really look forward to seeing the final bar as I think it's something completely original from Ritter and the descriptions I've seen sound interesting.
@Alex - actually everyone likes reading them and find it far from boring - open your mind - enjoy the experience - cheer up - smile! :)
Hi All,
It's always good to get the week started off with one of my favourite brands. Two down, one to go in regards to this Winter-Kreation range. The best is still yet to come I may add :D
Nick / David / Rachel / Chris / Stu / Kevin - Re: General orange marzipan thoughts
It was a nice flavour for them to attempt wasn't it. It was good to see them make a slight adaptation on a bar that they know is already successful. I don't get the people who are complaining that it isn't anything new or exciting - they haven't made a fruit flavoured marzipan before ... not that I have seen anyway.
Steven - Re: Classical Ritter
They do own the square chocolate bar shape don't they. I always cringe a bit when I see the Thorntons range that is modelled on their chocolates.
Craig / Alan / Stephen - Orange UK bars
I'm more with alan and stephen on this one chap. Like Alan points out a load of the orange flavoured chocolates have been delisted recently. TCO is the stand alone one in my mind. Fry's also have an orange flavoured fondant bar still but it's hard to come across these days.
Golden - Re: 'Are you going to be raffle-ing any of these ritter sports bars off Jim?'
There is a Ritter competition starting next week. It is contained within the last review from this range.
Lucy / Ana - Re: Sorry to go off topics straight away but has anyone seen or heard what milka are doing for christmas this year?
Ana has provided a nice link for you there Lucy. Milka go for a more 'scatter gun' approach to their Christmas range ... they make loads and loads of small products rather than just focusing on a few like Ritter have here.
Kim - Re: I remember you reviewing a niederegger orange flavoured marzipan last month jim. Which did you find was the better?
That is a tough call to make. Hmmm I think I will have to go with this Ritter bar to be honest. The orange marzipan of the Niederegger wasn't anything special if I remember correctly, not compared to their pineapple one anyway.
Will / Colin - Re: Photos
Thanks chaps. Nice words on my photography are always well recieved.
Karen - Re: 'Where is my Hotel Chocolat monday boy?'
Boy!???? I hope you mean man :D You got a Hotel Chocolat review at the weekend :D don't worry there are still plenty more to come.
Messiisgod - re: Do you review a new chocolate everyday
Indeed I do. Please stick around and make sure you share your views and opinions.
Katie - Re: Your comment
It looks like you have a decent ChocolateMission translator working for you there.
Lee - Re: Ebay for Ritter
Indeed you are right. There never seems to be a decent consistent seller of Ritter present on ebay, but if you get lucky there are some rogue sellers with the new flavours from time-to-time. Its worth keeping an eye on.
Nigel - Re: Predictions
You make your own luck in football chap :D Well done for your predictions. I guess we will be getting more of your pearls of wisdom for the midweek games haha :D
Beth - Re: White Chocolate & Cornflakes
The team at Ritter in Germany had already prepped me on this :D They are currently putting together another package to send across including this new 2011 flavour of the year bar. I'm looking forward to trying it for sure.
Andy - Re:'Whats actually stopping ritter sport from bringing more of their chocolate to the UK?'
That is something you would have to ask Ritter themselves. To launch a brand properly in any country takes a lot of advertising spend to get people to try it. Ritter aren't the biggest company you have to remember. I get your point though, I think they would do well in the UK marketplace.
Phil - Re: White Chocolate Marzipan
Who? What? Where? I think you mean the white chocolate and cornflakes right? It does indeed sound like it has some promise.
Selina - Re: Wrapper
It looks great doesn't it. Thumbs up from me.
Ana - Re: Orange liqueur
Well remembered they did have an orange liqueur bar a few years ago. If I remember rightly it was very good indeed. Thanks for the link to the Milka stuff for this year. You saved me digging about the internet :D
Sally - Re: I wish ritter would start making more white chocolates
You are in luck Sally! Look at what Beth announced earlier.
Alan - Re: Your Comment
Thanks for your nice words chap, they are much appreciated, especially from such a long time reader and contributor as yourself.
As you will have seen above I totally agree with you about the orange chocolate thing. The Fry's bar is still around aswell - I saw it only a few days ago.
Alex - Re: Your Comment
Delightful dealing with you as always. If the reviews are boring I suggest you just look elsewhere for your chocolate reviews.
Thanks for the comments today everyone. I launched a new weekly competition on Twitter today so be sure to check out the feed for further details.
JIM
Silly me haha, I thought Beth had mentioned a white chocolate marzipan bar.
You know I always ignored Ritter Sport as I thought it was some kind of strange energy bar, a bit like Kendal Mint Cake. But since reading your blog I have tried it out, and I must say i like it. I love Marzipan too, this one seems very seasonal!
Phil - Haha I thought you might have. It would be an interesting thing to see though. I've not see one before.
Dina - You ignored Ritter Sport :O I am shocked haha. Let me know what your favourite flavours are! There aren't exactly a lack of them to try :D
JIM
Got back home tonight. Checked the mail. Found a leaflet from a supermarket. They have these Christmas bars. All three of them. I'm trying them next week :D It will be an exercise of willpower, but I promised myself I am not buying any other Christmas products before next weekend.
Now I'm hoping for that some Lindt Christmas stuff will appear, too. And Gubor and CeMoi Christmas chocolates.
Oh, and now that I've mentioned Lindt, I remembered something else. A while ago, you posted a review of milk Excellence bars and the packaging had been redesigned. Here, we still had the old design until... I don't know, today I saw them with the new design and I last bought one with the old design about a week and a half ago.
I like this bar and I think the flavors are a great choice for one of their winter combinations. Usually I like fruit-flavored marzipan best but I think I like Ritter's plain marzipan bar even better, just because I'm picky about the sweeter orange flavoring, I grew up on the tart variety. It is hard to stop eating this one; their wrappers keep it so fresh, too.
