Kcal 25 Fat 1.5g Carbs 2.8gAs soon as this appeared in the J-List top selling snacks widget in my sidebar, the review requests came flooding in to my inbox. I have tried several of odd flavoured Kit Kats in the past - everything from Green Tea, to Sweet Potato etc, but this one I tried today really took the biscuit (awesome pun there haha!). This Kit Kat European Cheese is Nestle's latest variant out in Japan and from what I have read in other websites it is proving to be one of the most popular and hard to find Kit Kat flavours for a long while. This however didn't stop my buddies at J-List winging across a box for me to try - there were no willing fellow taste testers for a second opinion today, I can't think for the life of me why :D
These Kit Kat European Cheese Mini came in a 'petit' format, with each piece only being half the length of an original Kit Kat finger. Calorie wise I guess this was a somewhat attractive prospect for any dieter, but for those of us just trying to have a decent snack it was annoying having to keep opening mini foil wrappers (whatever would the eco-freaks think!). Size issues aside, the presentation was admittedly utterly fantastic. The mini sized Kit Kats came in a treasure chest like packet that opened with via a nifty little side mechanism pictured as a lock and key. As annoying as they were, the mini Kit Kats were cute looking in their yellow and orange wrappers. If it weren't the pungent cheesey smell that emanated out from them you could almost say they looked attractive :D
Cheesey smell!??? Indeed there was, and it wasn't all the appetising!! Doing a spot of translation I managed to figure out that these white chocolate Kit Kats were flavoured with a cheese called Gouda, which is normally made in the Netherlands - See HERE. Constituting 58.0% of the ingredients it was no wonder why the cheese was so strong in the taste. Placing one of the Mini Kit Kats in my mouth the immediate flavours I was met with were sweet, milky and focused on establishing a set of white chocolate base flavours. Within a matter of seconds a smokey, slightly sour dairy saltyness soon came to the party, taking over the taste for the rest of the duration of the flavour journey. The inner wafer added a touch of sweetens back to the taste when crunched on, however it really was the cheese element that was the dominant influence. To my taste I found it neither particularly pleasant or otherwise, just frankly a little weired, and suffice to say very unique.
Overall my lasting impressions of these Kit Kat European Cheese Mini are ones of both bewilderment and surprise. If I start with bewilderment - I guess I'm still at a loss as to why anyone would ever want to have cheese flavoured Kit Kat? I can often see the sense in trying out new flavour combinations that people might not immediately think of (my Zotter reviews are testimoney to that!), but I'm genuinely struggling to imagine anyone ever requesting a Gouda flavoured chocolate. Moving on to my feelings of surprise, well I'm left feeling surprised because it wasn't as bad as I dreaded it would be. The taste wasn't the most pleasant I have ever come across, but at the end of the day it was more palatable and had a certain uniqueness about it. This wouldn't ever be a Kit Kat product that I could recommend to anyone based on it tasting great, but as one of those novelty gifts it's one that will leave a lasting impression on someone that's for sure.

I read someone post a comment about this the other day and I thought they were just joking. A cheese flavour kk just sounds deplorable.
There isn't enough money in the world you could pay me to to try this one sorry.
Lol I've been awaiting this review with baited breath Jim. You are a load braver than I would have been. Out of interest how many of these mini ones did you stomach? Was it one of the ones you ended up throwing away?
Ewwww this just sounds gross no thank you.
I do like some of the flavours you have shown us over the last years or so but some of them have just sounded disgusting for the sake of sounding disgusting. Why do you think this flavour has been so popular? You mention that it has been one of the best sellers for awhile. The japanese are so weird.
Rxxx
Man I just assumed it meant some sort of sweet cheese like panacotta or something? Never in a million years did I think it was going to be like a savoury one.
I'm sorry but I think that is just taking things a step to far. Next you will be telling us they have bacon and cheese or something even more stupid.
This sounds more like something you would see a hamburger company say was in their new burger, not Kit Kat shouting about it being in a chocolate bar. This is so incredibly odd I almost feel like I need to try it just to see what it tastes like.
Thanks for the review Jim. I'm glad someone out there did the decent thing and gave it a try.
Honestly what is wrong with people? If you look at the 'top rated shoes' thing on the left it still says that it is the best seller!???????
I couldn't think of anything worse than a cheese flavour. It just sounds so disgusting.
I miss white choc Kit Kats but I dont want any cheesey flavours anwhere near things thank you very much. Man these people in the East have some crazy tastes.
What a fascinating review well done Jim. Because of the high costs buying it from jlist etc I wouldnt risk buying it myself to try ever but it is always intriguing to hear about what you make of these things. I personally just cant imagine for one minute what it would be like to have cheese flavouring chocolate. It doesn't sound to me like something that would be very nice tbh.
I know you say that people should always try everything once but Im afraid im just going to trust your judgement in this particular case and save my £$£ for the Pocky they have.
Not even Pocky have done a cheese flavour so that sort of says something about whether it would work or not.
I don't get the flavour at all but I'm digging the look of the box and mini size thing, they both look uber cute =] This is the sort of thing I would love to feed to people without them knowing what it was to see what they make of it without knowing it is cheese.
Would it be easy for them to guess from the taste? Or is just a case of knowing beforehand it is important?
Jim jim jim!!!!! Great review son I love your willingness to try everything and anything.
Did you see the game last night? It was amazing 3-0 without stevie g and torres :) :) :) :) I didn't dare dream that I tell you.
Sorry but this is nestle taking things one step to far for me. I think if this were released in the UK it would bomb completely. I know people have different needs in Japan etc but I could see this creating a quick media frenzy in this country and then just not selling.
I don't think we will ever see it lol.
Well done for reviewing this Jim. It makes my stomach turn thinking about this sort of flavour this early in the morning.
I think I'm happy just sticking to my usual milk choc KK chunky thank you very much.
@Kim lol I saw that the other day and was bemused by it. People must just be intrigued by it or something.
How can it be that your photos manage to make a cheese flavoured Kit kat nice? Lol my stomach and eyes are telling me this is something I would like to eat but my head is telling me something is a bit wrong here.
Thanks for the review Jim. These kit kat reviews are always great for a laugh.
Only 25 calories each? Is that a mistake or something?
Can I ask if you honestly like reviewing this kind of thing? I genuinely couldn't even contemplate trying a chocolate that is cheese flavoured. The two just don't go together in my mind, it sounds like the disgusting sort of thing that you would see people have to eat on a kids programme to win a prize or something. I would have to be paid to eat this.
Was I the only one to misinterpret that banner thing on the left? I thought by cheese that it meant cheesecake!!! Never for one minute did I think it meant a savoury cheese thing. Eugh I think you deserve medal for trying this one out Jim.
Green tea and soy kit kats sound half edible, but cheese, no eugh! NO thanks!
My only issue with this is that they didn't use best of british cheddar :)
Cheddar Cheese + Kit Kat ...... what could ever be more appropriate.
Smokey and salty? That sounds more bacon-ey that it does anything else. I think it's a bit early for me to be thinking about cheese and kit kats together. The idea of it is putting me off my breakfast and making me feel a little ill lol.
Proper awesome review Jim I've been wanting to see this one come around for a week now. Is it me or have kit kat calmed it down with the number of flavours they have been making in japan recently? Maybe that is why you sat it has been very popular and it isn't anything to do with the flavour itself. If these Japanese people are honestly interested in tasting cheese and kit kats together they need their heads checked lol.
The big chunk of what looks like edam on that package shot confirmed my worst fears. Lol I thought you were taking the piss with the title tbh. This is just one thing to far for me. I wouldn't even try it.
Is the idea for Kit Kat in Japan that they just run through anything that could flavour them completely? I swear we can't be far off a sushi flavour or something along those lines.
Thanks for the review but I'm best off out of this.
Top review fella!!!!!! Its great to hear that the cheese bit really comes through in the taste and smell :-) I just bought a few packs to give away to my mates this Christmas for a secret santa present. Lol I can't wait to see their faces lol
They should have used brie.
Sorry but I can't be having this. A seven for something that has cheese in it? I think your're scoring system might have a few holes in it mate lol.
I can't believe for one minute that this is actually edible. It sounds so disgusting.
This is just wrong :/
Even the picture of the cheese on the KitKat packaging is wrong :P
*shudder*
I love this review well done for trying it. They must have made them so small because they probably knew people weren't going to be that keen on them to begin with. I have to ask the same thing as David, how many of them did you you stomach before you threw them away? I don't think a fish flavour one can be too far off can it lol?
I've not ever seen a flavour of something so bizarre as this before. It all sounds just a little too disgusting for my tastes, I don't think I could bring myself to ever trying one even if they are really small. if they are only 25 calories a piece they must be really tidgy. The packaging wastage must be chronic.
As horrid as these sound I think I would have to give them a try if someone offered me one. They are only small by the sounds of things so its not like there is anything to lose.
Do you have any left you want to share with us?
Cheese Kitkat, well I've seen it all now haha.
I have to say when reading your description I felt slightly queasy - "smokey, slightly sour dairy saltyness" just sounds wrong. If you'd said they taste like cheesecake I might think differently but...ugh.
One thing's for sure Jim, you'll always have plenty of stories to tell about the weird and wonderful chocolates you've tried.
@Paul - lol @ fish flavour, don't give them any ideas!
You complete nutter Jim :-) I don't believe for one minute that you thought the taste was ok lol. I think that you just want to punish the rest of us since you have had to go through with it lol. Cracking review today.
lol my French friend used to claim cheese & chocolate was a delicacy...I thought she was making it up, she could never convince me to try it. I would try this though, it surely can't be as bizarre as Marmite chocolate for example ;)
lol@Ryan. I just came back from buying secret Santa chocolate for someone & I was tempted to include some fun ones to the selection. Their nut allergies however made it a nightmare trying to find any at all w/out...all such sufferers now have my sincerest sympathies!
I think this might be the most horrible thing I have seen reviewed on here and I have been reading everyday for like two years.
Some of the more recent flavours have been more sensible as well like the dark chocolate and the almond one. I thought they might have started taking things more seriously ..... Lol obviously I presumed wrong.
@Clecleee
This reminds me, the other week on Russel Howard's Good News they had a woman on who made cheese chocolates. I don't think he liked them.
I actually like the cheese-chocolate combination concept, if the chocolates and cheeses are well selected. Sounds like this wasn't quite the case here. Goat cheese whipped with melted milk chocolate - delicious.
Sorry i'm late on today.
I saw this cheese one crop up on Jlist and I couldn't believe my eyes. Lol I knew it wouldn't be long before we saw you write about it though mate, we can always count on you to fill us in with the finder details on these things.
To be honest I was expecting you to say it was worse than you have done. Im sturggling to think of anything more off putting than something smelling of cheesey feet before chowing it.
Well, things don't always go as planned, especially in these days.... So, thanks to cancelled trains I am at home and had the joy of reading this wonderfully written review.
I was really looking forward to this one, as I was curious to see what you would make of this rather strange combination... I think I can follow you on your feelings of bewilderment, I just can't imagine why anyone would really, really want this flavour. But at the same time, as crazy as it is, if someone offered me to try these, I would still accept the offer. Especially since you say they weren't as bad as you feared. ;-)
The Japanese often tend to have really nice packaging. I used to have a Japanese boss and she often got stuff from Japan (sadly nothing really crazy or exciting, usually just very, very sweet...). There I also noticed how much packaging is used for Japanese biscuits, cakes etc... My boss told me, that for Japanese the presentation/packaging is very important. I often found it rather wasteful, especially in times were we should not squander our resources thoughtlessly...
Hi all,
I knew this review today would evoke some strong reactions :D Luckily for me a load of them are saying similar things so I can cover off a load of your responses with one YIPEEE :D
EVERYONE (well nearly!) - Re: Cheese what the hell???
Haha I knew there were going to be a lot of comments along these lines today - I maybe wasn't expecting so many of you to say you wouldn't even consider trying it though.
Kieran - no money in the world? Come on chap I wish people would pay me money to eat chocolate ;)
David - I threw none away. I have some saved up to try out on family & friends when I head back for Christmas though.
Rachel - no idea why it has been so popular. I think eastern themed flavours always go down well. I know the British Royal Milk tea was another one that flew off the shelves.
Steven - bacon and cheese? Haha please no.
Kevin - I wouldn't be surprised to see McDonalds shouting about their 'new cheeseburger' with Gouda cheese next week. It would be funny wouldn't it.
Kim - Top rated shoes? Do you mean Top Rated Snacks haha? It is indeed the number one best seller at the moment. If you plan on buying it, but it now.
Will - Next week I'm sure Pocky will follow the Kit Kat lead and bring out a cheese flavour. Its a matter of time trust me.
Lauren - I think most people would be able to guess the intended flavour by the time they had smelt one. Whether they would still eat it is another matter altogether.
Nigel - Forget Liverpool winning last night! Did you see the cricket with England? Now that is something worth shouting about - amazing scenes.
Graeme - You are right this wouldn't ever sell in any great quantity here in the UK. I think 95% of people would dismiss the thought of even trying it.
Lisa - I will take that comment about my photos as a compliment thank you.
Alicia - No mistake. They were very small so yeah they were only 25 calories each. I think someone here has raised a good point saying that they have probably been made so small so that people would be more likely to try them.
Darren - These are my favourite type of reviews to do to be honest chap. They are the easiest and most interesting to write about + I know people will discuss them with interest.
Christian - I'm sure a few people will mistake the 'cheese' for 'cheesecake' thing I wouldn't worry. You wont be the only one.
Anon - Haha that made me laugh. Cheddar cheese would have been interesting aswell.
Katie - It's you being the wimp today haha! I would love to send you one just to see what ramblings you would come back with :D
Mike - Kit Kat haven't slowed down that much in Japan. They just keep releasing them in smaller bars and bigger multibags which makes them awkward for J-List to send over. It's nice trying some of the other things they have out there anyway.
Harry - It's Gouda not Edam chap :D watch the language aswell please :D it's a family site ;D
Emma - Shhhhh please don't mention a sushi flavour. I could see them doing it, and I'm not a fan of the stuff haha.
Ryan - Awesome idea for secret santa well done! They fit that sort of purpose completely. They create a nice shock factor and have good talkability, yet are still edible. Good thinking there.
Anon - Why not a bit of Camemberet or Mozzerella whist we are at it?
Andy - Hey don't diss the scores for the taste criteria unless you can pass judgement yourself :D Remember it only reflects my own personal views. There were no second opinions forthcoming with this one.
Claudia - I would love to know what you would have made of the smells if the picture is getting at you haha :D
Paul - Shhhh you guys have to quit it with this fish flavoured suggestions. You never know who could be looking out for new flavour suggestions at Kit Kat HQ.
Andrew - Indeed I don't think Nestle will be making many friends with the amount of packaging that goes in to these things.
Kelly - Unfortunately I don't have any left to share with my readers. I only have a few left for family and friends.
Phil - I will have more than enough stories to tell wont I :D Between Zotter and all these products coming from Japan I have probably tried some stuff that some people wouldn't honestly believe. I'm glad to see you are with me on the fish flavour one :D It sounds like I wont be asking you for a second opinion.
Stephen - Would I lie to you lot :D No I wouldn't :D
Thea - Where is this French friend now? Does she work for Nestle in Japan by anychance? I personally would put this on a par with marmite chocolate. Both are bloomin crazy lets be honest :D
Thanks for the feedback and funny comments today people. I would love to hear from anyone else who has tried this cheese flavour. I have some more J-list products coming up this week (pocky!!) so be sure to watch out for that review. In other good news ... :D an emergency fast tracked Heavenly Cakes review has also been built into the plan :D
JIM
you may be on to something here -- she moved to CA, where Google informs me Nestle's USA headquarters are located. lol I should find one of these and send it to her :)
