Today in 'Bits n Bobs' we touch upon offerings from Cadbury, McVitie's and good old Mr Kipling. Given I am reviewing so many today I will keep the words light, but wont skimp on the pictures :D As ever all your thoughts are very welcome - I wouldn't expect anything less than all your candid views :D
Mr Kipling Frosty FanciesKcal 106 Fat 2.7g Fat(sats) 1.2g Carbs 19.5g (per cake)
'Golden sponge with a vanilla flavoured topping, covered in fondant icing'
I found these on sale in my local Tesco marked on a £1.00 'special offer', which bought me eight individual cakes. My British readership will be aware that these Frosty Fancies are a variation on the iconic 'Frech Fancy' (familiarise yourself HERE), which is a cake that has been made by Mr Kipling since the dawn of time.
Suffice to say the presentation was suitable, yet lacking any real imagination, and the taste panel said they thought the cakes looked 'boring' and 'plain' compared to the original brightly coloured varieties. Taste wise the cakes weren't differentiated from the originals in any manner aside from the small portioning of vanilla topping versus the traditional buttercream. Experts told me (I don't ever eat the originals myself!), that the vanilla cream was superior as it was more flavoursome and less sweet. I would have perhaps been able to appreciate this myself had it not been for the near throat burning sensation caused by the icing and ever so sugary inner cake. These were fine, but certainly not a 'must-try'.

McVitie's Penguin Yule LogsKcal 110 Fat 5.5g Fat(sats) 2.7g Carbs 10.2g (per mini roll)
'Chocolate sponge logs with a creamy filling'
If you thought my bargain hunting skills were being pushed to the max finding all these £1.00 deals then you are all going to be super impressed to hear that I found these on a £1.00 BOGOF offer! Indeed, just one single British pound got me twelve of these Penguin Mini Rolls. These were first introduced last year for Christmas 2009 - See HERE.
Wrappers aside these mini rolls looked absolutely identical to the Cadbury Mini Rolls, with the white icnoic filling peeking out of the swirled sponge layers. To make things interesting I did attempt to pass these off as Cadbury Mini Rolls with some work colleagues who I conducted a blind taste test with (I removed the wrappers!). Within a group of six, two of them remarked upon the fact that the outer chocolate wasn't Cadbury chocolate, and they said that they didn't think they were as nice. The other four were probably just being polite, as I similarly thought the more generic sweet milk chocolate made these a little less superior to the immediate Cadbury alternatives. Nothing horrible but stick with the Cadbury ones. Another point - where was the traditional dusting of icing sugar to create the traditional snow 'Yule' effect?

McVitie's Galaxy Mistletoe Kisses Cake BarsKcal 147 Fat 7.9g Fat(sats) 4.1g Carbs 13.5g (per cake bar)
'Chocolate cake bar, with chocolate sponge, chocolate cream and caramel, covered with Galaxy chocolate'
Whilst the above Penguin Yule Logs were available last year, these Galaxy Mistletoe Kisses Cake Bars are a new 'innovation for 2010' from McVitie's. Price aligned with the rest of the market £1.00 bought me a pack of five of these - note these were biggest sized cake bars I have reviewed for a long while (each weighing 31.0g!).
Propositionally these were a simple cross breed between the Galaxy Mistletoe Kisses bar, and the normal Galaxy original/caramel cake bars - what on earth was there ever going to be here not to like? Well I'm pleased to say nothing at all. The taste panel loved these cakes, and there were several positive remarks about the extra chocolatey caramel moistening the sponge layer expertly. The outer chocolate was crisp to the bite and delivered the creamy sweet Galaxy experience that was expected with it's delightfully soft melting mouth feel. For a cheap Christmas themed cake offering I would recommend these.

Cadbury Festive Cakes with FlakesKcal 120 Fat 6.1g Fat(sats) 3.1g Carbs 10.2g (per cake)
'Golden sponge with a layer of white chocolate cream, covered in Cadbury chocolate, dusted with icing sugar and topped with a Cadbury Flake'
Shock horror I had to pay a little more than £1.00 to buy these and ended up forking out a whole £3.00 for a two pack multi-buy deal. I don't think even Cadbury can claim these are a new 'innovation' for 2010 - I've even seen very similar cakes (minus the icing sugar) appear during Easter time down the years.
Before eating these I was little concerned that they were going to be more of the same in regards to the Cadbury Snow Star Cakes (See HERE), which were by all means pretty poor. Luckily my taste panel and I were in agreement that these Flake Cakes were superior to those last lot of Cadbury cakes I shared with them. The main reasons cited for the perceived superiority were the thicker exterior milk chocolate, the Flake piece and more subtle white chocolate filling. My own opinion was indeed that these were better, but they were still not as good as the likes of the Galaxy Mistletoe alternative above. Flake fans might think they are more than worth a look at.

What a hard life you must lead having to try all these cakes hey?
I have seen some of these in the shops already but I haven't seen the galaxy ones yet. They look very nice, I will be buying them if I manage to come across them. Thanks Jim.
I'm loving the Bits and Bobs work Jim. I lol'd when I saw you had reviewed french fancies :) I'm not seeing where the chocolate content is in them but I'm not going to complain seeing an extra review.
I think I like the sound of the galaxy cakes the most. I havent eaten one of those mistletoe bars for years.
I think you are right those Galaxy cakes are wicked man. I think the chocolate cream bit gets a bit loast amongst the caramel but I think the amount of caramel is better than you get with just the normal caramel ones.
They should have done better with those penguin rolls. They look just like plain mini rolls to me.
How can you give poor mr kipling just a 6 out of ten, he is a cult classic Jim :P
I too don't like mince pies. I don't understand why everyone gets so obsessed with them when there are so many yummy things like all these about at this time of year.
Im putting in a special request for a yule log this year and not Christmas pudding.
Since your last big christmas cake post I bought the Cadbury Snow Star Cakes. I didn't think they were as bas as you said they were at all! I actually thought they were well yummy, but I don't mind cadburys dream chocolate lol :)
The next on my list are those flake cakes now. They look v yummy. Thanks for all the reviews.
Rxxx
I hope you have had plenty of help trying all these cakes Jim. I do worry about your health when I see these four products in one things. If you share them around I'm sure it is ok lol.
Great pics btw today. I'm loving the look of the caramel oozing out of the galaxy mmmmmmm.
French fancies are the worst cakes ever.
I like seeing the reviews but I never bother with most of thse christmas cake things. Most of the cakes are just very slight variations of things you can buy all year round.
The penguin 'yule' logs are perfect examples. When you look past the name you wouldn't bat an eye lid if they came out in August and not December. Its all just marketing.
I really fancy the look of the frosty fancies lol excuse my pun there.
I haven't had a french fancy from mr kipling for years. I used to have one every day in my packed lunchbox when I was smaller. It was my treat to have after my sandwich. Those frosty ones might bring back some nice memories for me.
Cool reviews today Jim thank you for showing these off. I think I can give the majority of them a miss but I don't think I would be able to turn down one of the flake cakes. Lol I don't know what it is but a cake with a bit of flake on top always sounds like a good idea, no matter the time of year.
p.s. what is with you not liking mince pies? Please tell me you like christmas cake.
Well there is a surprise :) Jim rates a galaxy product with caramel in highly :P Lol this research of yours was a waste of time we could have just told you which ones you would have said were going to be best mate lol.
Im only pulling your leg don't worry. Thanks so much for the great reviews. Judging by your pictures the festive flake cakes look well lush.
Jim where was the joke on the Penguin on the yule logs? If the yule logs don't come with a joke on then they aren't even worthy of a 6.6 I demand you take a look in your bins for the wrapper :-)
Well if you are insisting that I go buy some of these mistletoe cakes I will have to listen to you ;)
Flake fans might think they are more than worth a look at.
Flake fans??? That is moi! I will have to buy some of these aswell then.
I do love the fact they are flogging these all off so cheap this year.
I remember in years gone they always used to be more expensive than the normal cakes they used to make. They were always a bit of a rip off cause like people have said they essentially aren't that different at all.
These multi review posts are the best I love seeing these ones.
I love the way cadburys sprinkle a bit of icing sugar on their normal flake cakes and then call them festive lol. Im not blaming them or anything but it is a pretty simple thing for them to do but its effective.
The same goes for mr kipling. all he has done is left the dye out of the icing sugar.
They are all at it aren't they.
Mistletoe Kisses cakes bars? When did these happen????? As the biggest galaxy lover in the world why was I never informed of this??????
I'm going to go hunting for some of these today. I have already bought a lifetime supply of the normal mistletoe bars he he.
If you gave me free reign to pick one of these to have it would be the flake cakes without doubt. I like the sound of the galaxy kisses bar aswell but they sound very similar to the normal galaxy caramel cakes so I think I would like to try something a little different from the flakes ones.
You did a remarkable thing with the pictures again today. I know I said this last time you did cake reviews but you have a knack for making things look nicer than they are lol. They are always a let down when I see them in real life now.
Where are the cheese flavoured cakes then =)
Don't worry we wouldn't as you to ever do that lol. Im not getting your comment about not liking mince pies though Jim. Come on, you can't tell me that you don't dig a warm mince pie with custard. I have had way too many instances of that already and it's only december 8th this year. I think I will need to diet this january lol.
My brother ate all of the mistletoe kisses bars that my mum bought at the weekend I was so pissed off when I went to get one yesterday. I am even more annoyed now you say they are nice hmmmph
Those penguin yule logs look an absolute joke. Are they not just the normal penguin mini rolls but with different wrappers? That is a pathetic attempt at making something Xmas themed if they are.
The best yule logs are the ones you talked about from cadbury last week. They are soooooo nice. They do big ones aswell btw!!!
Galaxy lead the way again. I'm not surprised by that at all ;)
I'm glad someone has to the time to try all these cakes for us lol. We get bombarded with so many different ones at this time of year it is hard to tell the good ones apart from the useless ones. I think out of all these I would only bother with the flake cakes. They sound the most likely ones I would buy.
I loved the frosty fancies and thought they tasted sooo xmassy, dunno y thou hehe!! also the galaxy ones i fort were sooo yummy, am going to try some of the flake ones hopefully tonight ;] .... yummmy <3
Forget all these! Just buy the new jaffa cakes that have the cranberry in! I swear to go I have got addicted to them. They should print health warnings on the front of all these things. Im so sad they are limited edition. I will have to pack the cuboards full of them.
If you are going to be posting so many pictures of cakes on your website in the future can you please put a warning up before the site can be accesed. You have just made me way to hungry for some cake right now. I think a trip to my work canteen is going to be on the cards for some elevensees
I've not ever seen those mr kipling festive fancies before they look grand.
We never buy these type of cake bar things in our house so I probably wont be trying any of them to be perfectly honest. The closest thing we get to cakes are the kelloggs rice cripsy cakes but even them we don't buy that often.
One thing we will be having this Christmas is Christmas Cake :) We made it months ago and its been sitting in our cuboard ready to be opened. I think its about time we did to see what its like. I think my mum might have forgotten about it.
I'd rather munch a home made mince pie rather than those overly sweet manufactured cakes any day! Much nicer British Christmas treat than any of these cakes. ;-)
However it is still interesting to read the reviews. The pengiun yule logs and those fancies indeed seem to be very pathetic attempts to earn some extra festive cash with something which is available all year...
Yay B&B :)
Usually I'm not a fan of these cash-in type products but your posts have been encouraging me to try some Jim. Like Steven said thank goodness we have you to test them out for us :D
The mistletoe kisses bar sounds lovely although hardly festive. They could have put a dusting of icing sugar on at least. The Flake bars appeal to me most for that very reason. I've never been a fan of french fancies so I wouldn't bother with those. And penguin yule logs? Pointless! (well, you did ask for candid views haha)
My favourite christmas themed product this year has been the Mr Kipling rum & raisin slices. Did you manage to find any yet Jim? I've also tried the Mr Kipling christmas pudding slices but wasn't impressed with them.
These all look rather nice, apart from the Penguin ones. I've seen all of them but the Galaxy ones appeal most. They should bring them out permanently lol
I do like French Fancies though so they may be worth a look. The topping does look different in these ones, although the topping in normal ones isnt really a buttercream, its like a vanilla creme. I rather like the box, it looks pretty festive to me :)
I also hate mince pies, never have liked them, tried them as a kid and as an adult and cant stand them, same goes for Xmas Pudding! lol. I do like Christma cake though.
These all look yummy. I wish my job description included 'blind cake taste test panel member'!!
On the subject of bargains, has it already been mentioned that One Stop has a 3 for £5 boxed chocolates special on? They have all sorts.
Jim if you ever need a hand trying all these cakes out all you need to do is say.
Have you investiagted adding in a part to your site where we can rate chocolates? That would be so amazing if we could do that. You need like a voting system.
What is the deal with some of these brands trying to be sneaky and dressing up their normal products with christmas words on the packaging.
I would have expected more from mcvities. I thought they were more of an honest company that wouldn't do that sort of thing. I was obviosuly wrong if you look at those penguin bars. There isn't anything christmas themed about them in the slightest. Shocking.
Mistletoe Kisses are back? Uh oh for my waistline? Where might I be able to find them?
Hi All,
This is the first of two Bits and Bobs posts this week so it's good to see that the feedback is as nice as ever.
David / Nick / Stu / Paul - Re: Galaxy Mistletoe Kisses Cakes
These seem to be a clear winner in terms of all the comments people have left today. Lets be frank they aren't up to Heavenly Cakes standards (nowhere near haha!), but for supermarket cake bars they are about as good as it gets.
Nick - Re: French Fancies chocolate content
They had cocoa listed in the ingrdients :D lets be honest the rules are pretty flimsy on this site anyways :D
Stu / Graeme / Joel - Re: Poor effort by Penguin Mini Rolls
They aren't the best are they. Thinking about it when you look at anything bearing the Penguin brand that aren't the original bars they don't tend to be that great. I think the rules with Penguin are just to stick to the originals bars. That is the safest thing to do I think.
Kim - Re: Mince Pies
I go through years when I like them and some when I don't. I prefer Christmas cake this year, I had my first slice earlier in fact.
Rachel - Re: Cadbury Snow Star Cakes
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed them. This is why I always tell people to try things for themselves and not just take notice of my reviews! I am only one guy after all, my opinion is representative.
Emma - Re: I hope you have had plenty of help trying all these cakes Jim. I do worry about your health when I see these four products in one things. If you share them around I'm sure it is ok lol.
Haha don't you worry about me. I have A LOT of people testing these cakes and chocolates along with me. When I buy a pack of 5 it will usually involve me just eating the one and giving the rest away.
Henry - Re: I haven't had a french fancy from mr kipling for years. I used to have one every day in my packed lunchbox when I was smaller. It was my treat to have after my sandwich. Those frosty ones might bring back some nice memories for me.
It's always nice eating things like this isn't it. It allows you to wind the clock back for a minute and enjoy previous delights.
Golden - Re: p.s. what is with you not liking mince pies? Please tell me you like christmas cake.
See above :D
Mark / Emma / Julie / Adrian - Re: Photos
Thanks for the positive comments guys. They are always very nicely recieved.
Eric - Re: Jim where was the joke on the Penguin on the yule logs?
Sorry I forgot to put it in the review. I wrote this one a few weeks ago so there is no hope of me finding the wrapper! Sorry!
Katie - Re: Your Comment
No words of cynicism today then Katie :D Why I am disappointed haha!
Richard - Re: PRICE
Haha well if anyone was going to pick up on the price deflation in the cake bar sector of the supermarket then it was going to be you :D Haha I love your focus on pricing, it's brilliant! You would make a finer buyer for a supermarket.
Gary / Graeme / Estelle- Re: Little differentiation from normal cake bars
This has been pulled out by quite a few of you today. I see what you mean to an extent, but lets face it there is only so much you can do to a cake to make it festive themed.
Serena - Re: Mistletoe Kisses cakes bars? When did these happen????? As the biggest galaxy lover in the world why was I never informed of this??????
Someone obviosuly hasn't been reading '7Days of Chocolate Reviews' recently ;D I announced them on the site ages ago.
Darren - Re: Where are the cheese flavoured cakes then
Haha that genuinely made me laugh out loud.
Anon - re: My brother ate all of the mistletoe kisses bars that my mum bought at the weekend I was so pissed off when I went to get one yesterday. I am even more annoyed now you say they are nice hmmmph
It sounds like you need to be quicker off the mark there.
Emma - Re: I loved the frosty fancies and thought they tasted sooo xmassy, dunno y thou hehe!! also the galaxy ones i fort were sooo yummy, am going to try some of the flake ones hopefully tonight ;] .... yummmy <3
Wahey someone who has indugled nearly as much as me :D I feel better for hearing this.
Colin - Re: One thing we will be having this Christmas is Christmas Cake :) We made it months ago and its been sitting in our cuboard ready to be opened. I think its about time we did to see what its like. I think my mum might have forgotten about it.
Indeed crack it open already chap! It is already the 8th of December you know.
Anne - Re: The pengiun yule logs and those fancies indeed seem to be very pathetic attempts to earn some extra festive cash with something which is available all year...
Haha I love how you get to the point so quickly :D The Cadbury efforts this year are certainly more geared towards being 'proper' christmas offerings and not just repackaged existing products. Although some of them may not be that good (Snow Stars) I do concede they show a bit of effort which is more than can be said for some of the other products.
Phil - Re: Your comment
Haha you haven't held back either have you :D Love it! As you can tell I prefer people that express their opinions rather than skirting around things.
I'm still really struggling to find those rum & raisin slices chap. I will have another look this weekend but the review schedule is already booked the max anyway so I don't see where I could fit them in regardless. Lets see what I can do ... I will keep you posted.
Alan - Re: Your comment
Like you I'm not fussed by mince pies or Christmas pudding. The latter though is something you HAVE to have at some point on Christmas day at least ... those are the rules for my family anyway! I don't think any of my family like it that much but it's mainly about the tradition ... lets face it ... anything coated in enough brandy butter/custard/cream is good enough to eat anyway.
Thea - Re: Your Comment
Thanks for the tip on the special bargains. I'm currently in the process of putting together JIM's BUYERS GUIDE TO CHRISTMAS for next week ... I would love it if the comments people had included tips on where to buy all the products featured at their best prices. Everyone loves a bargain :D
Vikki - Re: Have you investiagted adding in a part to your site where we can rate chocolates? That would be so amazing if we could do that. You need like a voting system.
Believe me I'm currently investigating this for 2011 ... I need a web geek to help me out adding in that sort of functionality .... ANY VOLUNTEERS?
Anon - Re: Mistletoe Kisses are back? Uh oh for my waistline? Where might I be able to find them?
They are indeed - all good retailers :D
Thanks for the comments again today everyone. They are appreciated as much as always. More chocolate reviews tomorrow.
JIM
It's my first stop here but how good is it that you've taken the time to write out the fat content of each product. Thanks. I've never been a Kipling fan, they're too artificial for my liking.
Last week, I was browsing an online catalog and I stumbled on a delicious looking picture of the Galaxy Mistletoe Kisses Cake Bars. And then I actually saw them reviewed. Wow! :D Thanks for the review.
cadbury flake cakes are the best :)
