January 21st: Eat Natural Selection 2011

It's been nearly two years since I last took a look at the Eat Natural range (See previous reviews HERE) but since the turn of the year I have received a few requests asking me to check out some healthier chocolate options. Back in 2009 the Eat Natural brand was still relatively unestablished here in the UK, but since then their range has grown quite considerably with several new variants and products (cereals etc).

These indulgent health bars aren't my usual choice of snack, but I was able to track down two new flavours with relative ease in my local Holland & Barrett health store. Both 45.0g bars came in at a pretty price £0.89, though I guess this was to be expected given the proposition and ingredients. If you look at the wrappers from the 2009 reviews you will see that little has changed in regards to the presentation, which I personally think is fair given that it was never bad in the first place. Puzzlingly the wrappers still lacked nutritional information (you would of thought consumers of these sort of products would be interested in that sort of stuff), but nonetheless every other detail you may ever wish to know e.g. ingredients, production method etc were included.

Here are my thoughts on the two flavours:

Eat Natural Dark 70% Chocolate Brazils & Apricots

Kcal ??? Fat ??? Fat(sats) ??? Carbs ???

I am sure you will agree that this was the uglier of the two bars :D the unidentified green bits caused me to quickly refer to the ingredients list upon where I quickly learnt that they were in fact pumpkin seeds. I'm sure someone will inform me of the health benefits, but I have to say they did little for the taste and proved more an annoyance getting trapped in my teeth. In regards to the other constituents this bar was a bit of a mixed bag, with some mouthfuls full of flavour, whilst others proving relatively tasteless depending on what was portioned where. The apricot cranberries and raisins were all plump and juicy, and provided the desired fruity sweetness to the very plain tasting rice base. On the flip side the brazil nuts were pretty lax in their flavour contribution, and it was only really where the coconut was present that a nuttiness came through. Billed as 70% dark chocolate I was hoping the base was going to contribute a grander chocolate flavour hit than it did. Unfortunately the chocolate came across very diluted in it's cereal bedding - I understand heavier portioning would have hampered the 'healthy' proposition, but it was begging out for a thicker chocolate base.

7.3 out of 10

Eat Natural Cranberries, Macadamias & Dark Chocolate

Kcal ??? Fat ??? Fat(sats) ??? Carbs ???

The less alien looking bar emanated some tempting nutty scents when unsealed from it's wrapper which was unsurprising given it's heavier portioning of nuts. Fundamentally this was largely the same bar as the one above, just with some minor differences in the portioning of some constituents. I don't know what strength the chocolate was this time, but it yet again cried out to be more generously portioned as the smokey cocoa flavours struggled to cut through the more dominant savoury rice cereal base. Although lacking the apricot of the above, the cranberry fruits took more of a leading role making for a tarter fruity taste than in the previous. As you may have guessed, it was the nuts where I felt this bar had more going for it, and this was mostly down to the copious amounts of coconut involved. Indeed, the shredded coconut added a very nice milky nuttiness to almost every bite, whilst the less prominent macadamias contributed some more additional subtle buttery nut flavours when encountered.

7.6 out of 10

Overall these where both sound offerings from Eat Natural, though both were crying out for a thicker layer of dark chocolate to supplement the tasty fruit and nut constituents. What with the company going from strength-to-strength and branching out in to new areas, I think it may be worth them considering making an an actual chocolate bar range. If they paired up the great quality fruit and nut produce with some high quality chocolate, then I think they could be on to something quite special. Do any of you have any favourites from Eat Natural? Have you tried either of these two bars?

This inspiration to stick to a diet has come a little late for me I'm afraid Jim. Lol I lasted about 48 hours on my chocolate detox before my willingness crumbled into the nearest cadburys bar.

My new way of thinking is that life is too short to waste not eating the foods you want. Eat what you want and be happy. It's the only way to live.

These bars are so yum, i never realised you had done reviews on them before. The one I always choose is the orange wrapper one with the yogurt on. Most of the time I would happily eat one of them instead of any chocolate bar.

I've been known to eat these on occasion. Most of these occasions are when there are no chocolate bars about lol, but I do still really like some of them.

If you gave me the choice of a choc bar or a healthy cereal bar like this I can never see me picking the cereal bar no matter how much 'better for me' it supposedly is.

I like the idea of the one with cranberries in. You never see chocolate and cranberry paired together in chocolate bars. I would of thought they would have been a popular combination considering how popular cranberry juice is. Thanks for the review Jim.

I'm loving the way you are mixing things up this year with all the different types of stuff. Pretzels, cereal and health foods all in one week, lol do you eat chocolate anymore?

I think it is amazing how eat natural have transformed their business over the last couple of years.
I remember their more humble begginings when they merely had just two flavours in their range. It is so wonderful to see how such a reputable brand has a) increase their breadth of what they sell and b) not compromise on the quality of what they offer. We should marvel at them as an outstanding example of how to grow a business yet maintain core values. Well done Eat Natural.

I think I tried the orange wrapped bar of theirs before and didn't get on with it. I'm not in to the whole nuts and fruits things. I knew that before but I just wanted to try it to see what it was like, lol no harm done but I wont be trying these two.

Eat Natural bars are horrible. I swear they are bird feed smushed into bars. No one in their right mind would eat these things. They even look disgusting.

The scores aren't that impressive but I could be tempted by a cheeky try of the cranberry and macadamia. We have a local health food shop that keeps a big stock of these bars so it shouldn't be difficult for me to buy one. I may well make it this weekends mission. Cheers mate.

Do you honestly think we want to see this sort of rubbish Jim? Come on man get back to reviewing the chocolate. Don't waste time reviewing this crap.

Lucy said...

You can get the nutritional information off the eat natural website for both of these. I was looking this all up last week in fact.

If they weren't so bloomin expensive I would buy eat naturals things loads more. The problem is they cost so much more than anything else. Why spend around a quid for a one of these when you can get two freddos for 30p? I know which I find more satisfying aswell.

This just proves that chocolate > health rubbish.

Jim have you tried the blackcurrant, mango and dark chocolate one before? Honestly I think it is the best one they make. Lol I think I have eaten 3 this week already, I'm currently really in to my cereal bars because I am on a detox January health kick. Long may it continue if the snacks I get to eat are this nice. Thank you for the review of these two, they aren't flavours I have tried yet.

As pathetic as this sounds the green things on the first bar would be more than enough to put me off it. They aren't exactly pretty on the eye are they.

As nice as these are I just find them to expensive to fork out that amount everytime I want a snack. The ingridients list on the eat natural website making interesting reading for both of these.

They look so clean and full of good stuff versus a normal chocolate which has all those crappy e-numbers and vegetable fat stuff in them.

I can see the advantages of these over other snacks but you have to have deep pockets to be able to have them each day. It's not a viable option for me unfortunately.

I see these as a bit of a luxury to have every now and then but they quickly get boring if you have them all the time.
The shop at my college used to do this amazing yogurt one filled with pistachios that was lush. The salt of the pistachios was so nice with all the fruits. It's hard to believe that something that tastes so good is supposed to be good for you lol.

Eat Natural bars are great but these two aren't the best. I certainly wouldn't go looking for one if I was in need of a chocolate fix. To all the people complaining - that's not what they're trying to be! The chocolate-free ones or ones with yoghurt are the best ones, healthier and more satisfying. The only thing wrong with them is their tendency to stick coconut in nearly every single bar!! Not everyone likes coconut!! It's really unhealthy as well, so why they feel the need to put it in there is beyond me. In short - for a satisfying healthy snack = Eat Natural bar. For chocolatey treat = actual chocolate bar. Don't hate them!!!

Does anyone here eat their cereals? Im getting so bored of porridge all the time, if someone gives me a glowing recommendation I might give one of theirs a go. Brill reviews Jim please keep up your great work.

I like the apricot and yogurt copy ones that marks and spencer make the most.

I haven't tried these two yet but who knows what they day will bring :) I feel all inspired after reading your words of wisdom :P

Sorry for going off the topic but if any diet concious people want a good chocolate snack that saves on the calories I would suggest the Kelloggs rice crispy squares. They do a purple one which has choc on top.

I remember there is a review of it on here somewhere, I wouldn't want to attempt to find it.

Colin said...

They used to make a dark chocolate and ginger one but they stopped doing it for some obscure reason.

There was also a strawberry jam flavour that I have seen knocking about a few times. I never tried it but it sounds like it has some potential. Nicer than these two in my opinion.

Richard said...

@Andrew I'm normally the first person to complain about the price of things but I sorta understand why these are more expensive than the average chocolate bar.

The ingredients for one will be a load more expensive. I can imagine they cost a lot more to make than say a galaxy or anything like that. They don't appeal to me in the slightest, but I can see why they might appeal if you someone was after something better for them.

David said...

@Lucy Lol I'm not someone who cares about these things but when you consider you can get '99 calorie' toffee crisps these don't look all that "healthy" all of a sudden.

Nigel said...

Sorry mate but nothing of interest for me here today. I don't do the whole seeds and nuts thingy bobs. I stick to human food lol.

I'm optimistic on the footie this weekend. Things are finally looking up for Pool :)

Fantastic reviews thanks ever so much for looking at these and responding to my mail.
Ignore all the random idiots saying you shouldn't review products like these. I think your reviews are incredible and I like it that you can see past just reviewing plain choc bars all the time. Your's is the first site I check on whenever I get online. LOL I'm now your biggest fan.

Good review Jim. I rarely buy Eat Natural but I remember them being quite tasty, when compared to other bars like this. I suppose no healthy bar is ever going to have loads of chocolate eh?

I have some Jordans crunchy coconut bars in my cupboard at the moment, now those are very tasty.

Phil said...

Oh and as for the pumpkin seeds, yes they're very good for you lol. From what I can remember, they have various minerals in them.

Kieran said...

I don't understand why anyone would subject themselves to eat these kind of bars.

These people think they are being healthy and all that but as David points out you can have a small chocolate bar for fewer calories and fat content. I think I'll pass thank you.

Scott said...

Frusili cereal bars are just as nice and about a fraction of the price. If you don't have the money for eat natural they are a good alternative.

Ria said...

Thanks for the review. These always look pretty interesting but but the one I tried last year (can't remember off the top of my head) wasn't great and I was put off trying any others. The fact they were quite high calorie wise compared to similar types of things also put me off. The nutritional info is on the site. They are also quite expensive too.

Kat said...

I've always wanted to try these, but as far as I'm aware they don't do ANY bars without nuts, do they? (*nut allergy*) Then again, seemingly I'm not really missing that much, I think I'll just stick with a good old-fashioned chocolate bar :D

Roxy said...

I tried the Peanut Cranberry
& Milk Chocolate bar a few months ago: It was pretty uninspiring & as others have pointed out, it didn't really justify the pricetag. Gimme chocolate anyday even if it means having to exercise a bit in exchange ;)! Thanks for the review dude! x

Interesting little bars... think I'll pass on them though. I'll stick with my Clif Bar granola bars =)

Hi All,

Apologies if this is a tad brief - I will just reply on mass today as I'm responding via my iphone so it's not ideal.

I see the point about these not being as 'healthy' as some of you might have thought. I think its just the way you look at it all.

Indeed they might have more calories and fat in them than your average chocolate bar, but they also have essential nutritional stuff in them like fibre, protein etc. I very much doubt the fruit content will do much for you towards your '5 a day' but I'm pretty confident when I say that they will have better nutritional value than most chocolates. Personally I wouldn't advise you guys think too much about it :D Just enjoy them for what they are.

Right ...

Golden - Haha very funny. I do eat chocolate, take a look at the site tomorrow.

Matt - They have expanded fast haven't they.

Mysterio - What exactly do you like then? Sorry you seem to only post when you I write about something you don't like. Cheer up please.

Lucy - Thank you for the nutritional information, I hadn't clocked that. I will edit the post when I get the chance this weekend.

Daisy - Nope not seen that one. If I do I will give it a try. Thanks.

Emma - I've not even seen the cereals before. I would be interested to hear what they are like though.

Karen - This is the review you are talking about. There is a search bar that is easy to navigate you know :D http://www.chocolatemission.net/2009/02/february-26th-kelloggs-rice-krispies.html

Richard - Are you feeling ok chap? Price not an issue? Is this the same guy haha!

Nigel - I look forward to the predictions :D

Alicia - I'm blushing. Thanks for reading.

Phil - I didn't realise you were such a coconut fan. I got a product for you to try. Yogurt Covered Crunchy Coconut Clusters from Tesco. They are sold alongside all the packs of nuts etc in the clear cellophane bags. Very tasty.

Ria - Which one was it you tried out of interest? Not all of them are that great. They can be a little hit and miss.

Kat - Ah yes! People with nut allergies might want to stay well clear here. I wouldn't even trust one that says it doesn't have them in. One would presume they are all made in the same place.

Roxy - These bars are coming across as really marmite today. People either loving them or hating them :D These days always make for the most interesting comments, they can be so random haha!

Right I'm going to post this before my phone goes mental and deletes the entire lot :D Everyone have great weekends. 7DoCR is up tomorrow so please enjoy it.
