January 8/9th: Heavenly Cakes **NEW** Gluten Free Range

We are a week into January now and it is at this time of year that most of us make those New Year resolutions to start looking after ourselves a bit more. Indeed, after a Christmas period packed full of chocolate, cake and snack indulgences I'm sure there will be more than a few of you who have vowed yourselves to start looking at your diets a little more closely.

Whilst a great deal of people embark on the famous 'January diets', it is at this time we should probably spare a thought for the people who have to watch their diets on a more continuous basis - take for example people who have to eat gluten and wheat free foods:

'A gluten-free diet is a diet completely free of ingredients derived from gluten-containing cereals: wheat (including kamut and spelt), barley, rye, malts and triticale. It is the only medically accepted treatment for coeliac disease, the related condition dermatitis herpetiformis and wheat allergies'(thanks Wiki :D ).

When having to consider eating a diet not containing any of those things, Heavenly Cakes probably wouldn't be the first company you would think of when it comes to providing a solution for you. Well you are well wrong there !!

During the latter stages of last year, Maeve and Nigel (Founders of Heavenly Cakes) were hard at work developing a whole new Gluten-Free range. During this time they were kind enough to send me samples that they were developing alongside the original cakes when I was reviewing them. As you can see below, two examples of this were the Lemon Meringue and Marathon cakes that I reviewed last November (See HERE), they also sent along an exclusive cake to their Gluten-Free range, the Heavenly Cakes Gluten-Free Milk Chocolate Brownie with Nuts.

As you can see below by the photos the cakes themselves, looked no different whatsoever from the originals. My thoughts on how they tasted are below ... Marathon Flapjack - There were only very minor differences when it came to the base of this particular cake. It did seem to lose a touch of it's savoury oatyness, but this was more than covered up by the sweet buttery flavours and lashings of peanut butter and chocolate placed on top. It was still one truley phenomenal cake.

Lemon Meringue - Out of all the three types of cake this was the most obvious in terms of it's changed recipe. The shortbread did lose it's viscosity and was a little more crumbly and messy than the normal cake, but once again the layers above meant this was of real insignificance and it still retained most of it's biscuity charm. A delicious white chocolate and lemon combination.

Milk Chocolate Brownie with Nuts - I was a little worried at first because it didn't look at impressive as some of the other brownie products I had tried from Heavenly before. The taste was noticeably differentiated from the Heavenly Cakes brownie norm, but I'm pleased to say this wasn't a detrimental issue. I would say that on the balance of things the brownie was less cake focused, and more insanely rich in it's cocoa and nut flavours. The outer portion wasn't as crisp as one would have desired, but most importantly the inner section was gooey and softer to the bite. The presence of the walnuts and ground almonds was a masterstroke - the nuts really came through in the latter stages of the taste.

Overall I don't think anything more needs saying than a jolly congratulations to Heavenly Cakes for creating such a tremendous range of cakes for people who are restricted to these diets. Each and every one of the Gluten-Free cakes I have tried have been close to the originals - I bet if we tried a blind taste test the majority of people wouldn't even pick up on it. What makes the launch of these new Gluten-Free cakes even more extraordinary is that Maeve has managed to develop recipes for their entire range! If you are a person that has to adhere to these dietary restrictions and has somehow managed to wander on to this review then you should count yourself extremely lucky because you have just struck gold. Bravo Heavenly ... Bravo!!

FANTASTIC review, thanks Jim. Some of my family are coeliacs and I didn't know Heavenly made cakes that were suitable. We're definately going to be trying them now. A lot of the gluten free stuff is truly horrible and tastes nothing like a real cake so these sound fab. Do pass on our good wished to the Heavenly cakes crew for taking the time to develop some decent GF products. Cheers!

3 in 1 :-) love it Jim. Really clever review on a serious subject.

When you see things like this it makes you realise how lucky most of us are. It would be awful to have to follow a gluten free diet. I feel so sorry for people that have to, it must be so much hassle.

The cakes here don't look any different to the ones in the original reviews. Good work Heavenly Cakes.

Are they ever going to put the brownie with nuts up on there website? They don't update it enough, they need to get better at that cause they put the chilli brownie up too late to order for Christmas last time. Lol sort them out Jimbo.

Justin said...

Ok OK Jim. Before you say anything about the cricket I will just say congratulations to England, you guys were the better team by far. Please keep the banter to a minimum, I copped it so badly at work yesterday :)

Lol I was going to not just post so you couldn't poke fun but I had to say something about these cakes. I'm amazed that they can make them gluten free and them not suffer in quality all that much. What an amazing feat.

Jim what was their motivation to make all these gluten free ones? Do the people that make the cakes have the problem themselves or something?

So much for the diet :) These cakes have given me the motivation to go make some waffles for brekkie now.

I will start the year as I mean to go on. I hadn't done all that well with the diet anyway. I drink too much wine for me to ever stick to one.

Are the gluten free cakes even more expensive than the originals? I wouldn't have a clue what they replace the gluten stuff with so I wouldn't know what to expect. If the ingrdients cost more I would expect the price to go up accordingly. Great pics for the cakes btw Jim.

These cakes remind me of that person on the dragons den with that dairy free ice cream. Why don't Heavenly Cakes go on the next series? That lemon meringue looks way too nice.

Will you be reviewing the gluten free alternaties alongside all the other cakes you get from them from now on? It would be cool to see on an ongoing basis whether they match up or whether they just knew these were the best ones to represent the gluten frees.
I don't have to eat a gluten free diet myself but I do know some people that have wheat intolerances etc. They have to be so careful.

I was expecting a news post but this is just as good. I always like to see cakes from these people, especially when the photographs you bother doing are this good.

Even speaking as someone who doesn't have any issues with this thing at all I'm so pleased to see these cakes.

The section of the supermarkets that have gluten free foods is so small. It always makes me sigh with relief when I see how limited my food repertoire would be if I had to stick to the same diet as a coleiac. It must be a real nightmare.

Brill review.

I'm going to have to stop making excuses now and order some cakes from Heavenly. Has that discount stopped? Does anyone still have that code?

Ryan said...

That marathon flapjack is one serious cake isn't it lol. If I only had the chance to try one cake from them that would defo have to be the one. Chocolate, PB and flapjack sounds like a dreamy mixture if you ask me. Thanks for the review, have a nice weekend.

What an amazing thing for such a small company to do. Before I saw they did this I was convinced that their normal cakes were going to be special enough for them to make a success of themselves.
Now I have seen these I am 100% convinced we will be seeing them a lot more in the near future. I wish them every success.

Are we going to get a special appearance from the baker today Jim lol?

Betty Baker if you are reading do you have any new cake recipes lined up? Have you anything new planned for 2011?

If people are paying you to review cakes like these I think you might just well have the best job in the world. If you ever need a business partner I will happily step up to the plate. No joke.

Nick said...

A company putting customers first? No way! Not in the money grabbing enviroment we live in.

Look at the contrast to yesterday. Thorntons decreasing their quality to shaft us all, and Heavenly Cakes going an extra mile to make sure their cakes are ok for everyone to eat. Wow I know which company I respect more, and no it isn't Thorntons :-)

Jesus man I have to get me some of the marathon flapjack. The word lush doesn't do it justice. Looks amaze.

This is such an amazing thing for a small company like heavenly to do. They should be so proud of what they have done here. I'm almost feeling the urge to order some gluten free ones myself even though I don't have any allergies lol.

Great review Jim, the pictures are up to your usual high standards. Did your dad do these for you again LMAO.

Estelle said...

Jim if Heavenly Cakes ever need someone to help them test out their cake recipes can you let them know that I would be more than willing to lend them my services. I'm sure it would be a pretty tough job to taken onboard but I think my experience with cakes down the years would make me a great applicant for such a job :)

Sorry to go off topic Jim but I thought people might want to see these.
I saw that there were two new bars announced this week. I think you might be interested to see them if you hadn't noticed them either, check them out.

Aero Caramel

Snickers Limited Edition maximus

I swear that aero has always had a caramel bar :S

What top looking cakes. I will have to order some of these soon. I might even order a cheeky gluten free one to see the difference.

Enjoy your weekend m8.

I can't echo what @Beverly has said enough. My mum has to eat gluten/wheat free. She would love to try some of these cakes, I might buy here some for her birthday next month. Thanks so much for showing us them Jim.

I didn't think Heavenly Cakes could make me love them even more than I already do. What an amazing and thoroughly thoughtful company. Good work on the review Jim, its really well done and informative on the issue.

First things first Jim - Man U vs Liverpool. Somehow our donkey of a manager still has a job so I fully expect a humiliating defeat and nothing else. I will predict 3-0 to Man U.

Anyways back to more important things. Congrats for Heavenly Cakes for being so socially responsible. I respect them a lot for making these gluten free ones. The market size for people that need them must be tiny compared to people that dont. At least it gives them some sort of uniqueness, it might really help them in the future. Best of luck to them.

Have a nice weekend mate.

Great review Jim, and congratulations to Heavenly for coming up with these. They sound like they're pretty good.
I think I've had a gluten-free brownie before, at Morrisons cafe. It sounds like what you describe here, it had lots of nuts in. It's pretty damn tasty, infact I prefer it over regular brownies which are always too squidgy for my liking.

Alan said...

These cakes do look amazing and its a real credit to them for producing cakes that not only look as good as their standard ones but also taste almost identical.

@David - Nestle are making me laugh at the mo, they say theyre wanting to expand the aero range but theyve just rereleasing the bars they discontinued in the first place lol

the aero orange which im happy to see back but the aero caramel was never much of a success and was only around a year or so along with the aero truffle in around 2005/6 i think it was. I'm sure theyre trying to appeal to lovers of Wispa Gold but I'm not sure it will work!

I need cake now =( I wish I could have some Heavenly Cakes

As much as I love the cakes post I was hopinhg to have somewhere to discuss this.

Kraft have begun their evil take over Jim. I knew it was a matter of time http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-12118639

What a diabolical action to take. Turfing good people out of their jobs is despicable.

Phil said...

How cringe-worthy is that Aero caramel sales pitch: "with an unmissabubble profit opportunity".

Oh dear.

Isobel said...

Omg these cakes look so nom nom nom. I will have to send HC a bill for a new kyeboard because mine is now drool covered. Great pics today.

David said...

@Nigel I hadn't thought of it like that. All we need now is the truffle and the cappuccino one and we have gone 100% full circle.

Has Jim reviewed the Snickers one already? It sounds like one he might have bought from abroad already.

Ria said...

Yay, thought it would be a while before we seen Heavenly Cakes again so this was a pleasnat surprise! Glad to hear that the quality doesn't take a huge drop with these gluten free cakes and that those with an intolerance can still enjoy them.

Just worked through my own Heavenly order and can conclude that they are just as nice as you've reviewed. The Marathon flapjack just wins out over the rest but it was hard splitting them. In order I'd probably go with: Marathon flapjack, billionaire brownie, toffee tiffin, cappuccino, midnight mint, lumpy bumpy brownie and then the cinnamon shortbread (lovely shortbread, just could have done with a bit more cinnamon). None would have been rated lower than an 8.5 though. Will definitely be putting in more orders and recommending them to friends.

Trish said...

I got to say I would do anything for a piece of that brownie right now. I love the idea of putting nuts in there, though I might possibly have chosen hazelnuts myself because they are my favourites.

Have they ever thought of doing a pistachio flavoured brownie cake? It's something I have tried somewhere before and it worked very well.

I agree with what everyone has said here. It's so amazing seeing a small company put so much effort in for such a small group of people. It's companies like this that make me feel proud to be a Brit. We may be seeing the likes of Cadbury heading down the pan (that article Lucy posted is disgusting behaviour by Kraft), but I feel comforted by the fact we still have people like Heavenly Cakes.

Joey said...

AHHHHHH MUST.RESIST.CAKE!!!!!!!!!!!

lol sorry Jim but im trying to cut back this month and this review really isn't helping me out at all.

Paul said...

The brownie looks like it could do with a few more nuts but apart from that it all looks pretty grand. Good review Jim. It would have been nice to have a news post though.

David/Alan - You guys are right about the Aeros not being new. Have you seen those stupid aero sheep they have made now.

Lee said...

Epic cakes. I want some :-)

Kim said...

I want to see them make more white chocolate cakes. They don't make enough of them - where is the white choco flapjack :(

Alan said...

@Paul - I have, theyre really odd looking arent they! lol I honestly can't believe the easter stuff is already out.. in fact it was out before christmas which is just crackers!

Hi All,

I'm loving the amount of feedback on the review this weekend :D Thanks god a lot of you are all saying the same sort of thing, if you all had questions I think I would be here answering them all night haha.

I'm sure Heavenly Cakes will be along to answer some of your questions and give you guys a response at some point. I know they are busy fufilling a huuuuuuuuge order this weekend though. The poor owners are working/baking night and day to get the order ready!!

Steven - I'm sure the brownie with nuts will definitely make it up there very soon. If you want it on an order just e-mail them for the minute.

Justin - The series was a white wash chap 3-1 :D :D Lets be having ya haha!

Richard - They are the same price by the looks of things.

Rachel - They should go on the dragons den shouldn't they. The gluten free thing differentiates them from other current brands. I'm sure they would invest.

Kim - I hope I will review the gluten free alternatives aswell as the normal cakes from now on. It will be interesting to see how they do on an ongoing basis.

Anon - The discount has stopped I'm afraid. It ran out on Christmas day.

Matt - As I said Heavenly should be a long at some point in the near future to answer you guys. I sure hope so anyway.

Estelle - I will pass on your application :D

David/Alan/Phil - Those so called new bars are both things I have tried already. There is even an Aero caramel review from 2008

http://www.chocolatemission.net/2008/03/march-31st-aero-caramel.html

It will be interesting to see how it compares I guess. Thanks for posting those articles chap.

Nigel - Haha things changed a bit since you posted your prediction on Saturday morning :D .... Hodgson out ... Dalglish in ... dodgy penalty ... 1-0 UNITED :D :D :D I will let you tell me what to think of all that tomorrow chap

Lucy - Nice article thanks for posting it. That is indeed not the sort of thing we want to be seeing is it. Its always bad to hear about any job losses, but ones like that are extra sensitive aren't they.

Ria - I'm so glad you have added your comments about their cakes. It's nice to have someone else raving about how good they are :D I often think that people must think I am being biased or something so thank you for going right ahead and confirming I'm not totally nuts haha :D You've even managed to try one that I haven't yet (cinnamon shortbread!), I think I will try the chocolate shortbread soon. Thanks again.

Trish - I would also like to see some sort of pistachio cake/brownie. I think it would be very nice.

Martin - Well summed up.

Thank you so much for all your positive comments about the reviews and the photos. I did them myself btw :D the old man cant take the credit this weekend I'm afraid.

As I said I am hoping that Heavenly Cakes (or Betty Bakes more to the point) will be along soon. Thanks for the multitude of comments, you are all what make the site the success it is. New review tomorrow.

Thanks

JIM
