March 21st: Hotel Chocolat 'A Dozen Quail Eggs'

I was going to leave the Easter and Mothers Day chocolate reviews for a while longer, but the rest of my family insisted I get this review up as soon as possible so none of you miss out on an opportunity to try them. Apologies for spoiling the review in the first paragraph, but lets face it, it was blindingly obvious that these Hotel Chocolat 'A Dozen Quail Eggs' were going to be received rather warmly anyway!

Described as a 'selection of filled chocolate eggs', these were a none to dissimilar product to the Hotel Chocolat The Sleekster Egg Box Selection reviewed in 2010 - See HERE. This 2011 selection however came with a quirky and fascinating new look (very cool looking in my opinion!), aswell as some intriguing new flavours. What with the selection comprising of eleven different flavours, all of which were correctly identifiable from the inclusive menu, we better get going ...
Classic Praline - Milk Chocolate/Blue Stripes - A deliciously creamy 40.0% milk chocolate shell with a woody, hazelnut noted textured centre. I think we all know by now that Hotel Chocolat make fantastic praline. Superb.

Caramel Praline - Milk Chocolate/Black Stripes - I was surprised to see that this was one of the few 'survivors' in terms of flavours from the 2010 selection previously reviewed last year See HERE. It was still just as I remembered it. Very Good.

Chocolate Truffle - Dark Chocolate/Red Stripes - This was more of a plain dark chocolate piece with little flavour development from the centre truffle constituents. Still very tasty but understandably it was perceived as one of the less exciting pieces and was left until last. Good.
Strawberry Truffle - White Chocolate/Pink Stripes - This was the first plucked out by sister who described it as a creamy, vanilla heavy white chocolate, with a delightfully 'real' tasting strawberry fruit centre. Very Good.

Amaretto Truffle - White Chocolate/Brown Stripes - I perhaps wasn't the best person on my mini taste panel to test this one, but for what it's worth I still thought it was fantastic. Unlike other booze filled Hotel Chocolat truffles I have tried previously, I loved the balance the creamy white chocolate gave the alcohol fueled filling. Not my favourite but still very nice. Very Good.

Blueberry Truffle - White Chocolate/Purple Stripes - My mother hasn't stopped going on about how much she loved this truffle since she ate it. She is a big of blueberries, and was amazed at how real the flavours of the fruit came through the sweet, creamy white chocolate shell. She said it was one of the best chocolates she's ever tasted from Hotel Chocolat - big claim there! Superb.

Delivered Chocolate Gifts from Hotel Chocolat

Whisky Truffle - Milk Chocolate/Black Stripes - Despite his initial grumbles that this one should have had an exterior dark chocolate shell, my old man later conceded that the extra sweetness from the milk chocolate was the perfect contrast to the fierce, fiery whisky flavoured soft centre. He said it was delicious, but only for real whisky lovers given it's strength. Superb.

Chocolate Brownie - Milk Chocolate/Brown Stripes - Like the chocolate truffle was the plain dark chocolate piece in the selection, this was really just the plainer milk chocolate offering. Again there was nothing wrong taste wise whatsoever, however with so many interesting flavours available it was one of the last to be eaten. Good.

Vanilla Truffle - Milk Chocolate/White Stripes - This was the first time I had seen a Hotel Chocoalt vanilla flavoured truffle so I insisted that I get the chance to try this one, and I'm glad I did. The vanilla filling provided a tasty extension of the cream flavours of the chocolate, and rounded off the soft melting mouth feel with a cooling note of sweet bourbon. Superb.
Liquid Caramel - Dark Chocolate/Yellow - This was the egg that was portioned twice in the box - was I ever going to have a problem with that!? Haha of course not! As you can see from my review last year (See HERE) this was a truffle I rated very highly indeed. Superb.

Rum Truffle - Dark Chocolate/Orange Stripes - This was described by my sister as just a little too strong for her taste. She is a big fan of rum based drinks, but even for her said that she would have preferred the rum to have played second fiddle to chocolate rather than it being vice-verca. Standard.

Overall if you have taken the time to read through my families above thoughts on these truffle eggs, you find it easy to see why they insisted this selection be fast tracked on to the website. This Hotel Chocolat 'A Dozen Quail Eggs' was absolutely loved by all four us. Collectively we thought it looked very impressive, offered an amazing amount of variety, and of course we all loved the selected chocolates that we tried. When you think about it, those attributes are really all the table stakes you want from a box of chocolates, and Hotel Chocolat delivered on these here with a real touch of real class. As far as recommendations go, I probably needn't say that I think these come with a big ChocolateMission thumbs up. I can see them being a bit of a hot seller for Hotel Chocolat this Easter, so if I were you I would get your Hotel Chocolat orders in quick.

Thats oh so very thoughtful of you mate getting this 'up early' for us all thanks. It must be such an arduous task having to taste all these chocolates for Easter. I really feel for you, I really do :P

Andrew said...

Err Jim. Mothers day comes before Easter you know. You should probably write about those first. Easter is still ages away.

Quality review Jim, Hotel Chocoalt Mondays are back with avengence.
Hotel Chocolat chocolates aren't all that easy for me to buy as I don't have a store near me. This means I have to order everything online which can be a right pain if you suddenly review something great after I submit an order. The postage is so expensive I only limit myself to one order every couple of months. Nice work.

Kim said...

I love the extra close up photos. Its so much better when you can see what they have inside them.

Martin said...

I think this is about as near perfect in terms of flavours that I could ever hope for. Speaking as someone who doesn't like nuts this is one of the few Hotel chocolate boxes that I have seen recently that hasn't got loads of nutty chocolates in it. I could well have to invest ;)

Steven_F said...

Why do they portion the caramel one twice? its so obvious that they would do that. I would have liked to have seem them portion one of the white chocolate ones twice so it would have made it all even.

Paul said...

I think the eggs look much better than the ones they had last year. In the h-box egg selection I got all the colours on the top didn't match what they were disaplyed as on the card inside the box. It was so annoying because loads of times I didn't get the one I wanted at all.

Rachel said...

There are a few types in here that I wouldn't like but I'm sure I could find someone to take those off my hands. Im praying with all my might that I finally get one of those rockyroad to carramellow eggs that they make.
I wanted one so badly last year but I didn't get it. I hope you have your fingers crossed for me love.

Easter can't come soon enough if these are the standard this year. It would be great know what else you have but your not gonna tell us are you ya big meanie :P

I will second that. I got that big box of them last year and thought these were amazing. Its a shame to see more of the flavours haven't survived though. Oh well at least they have kept things fresh.

Linz said...

Lush photos love. You always go that extra effort with Hotel Chocolat, I hope you know that we all appreciate it. I have seen in posts before that you haven't thought that was the case.

Golden_Touch said...

Is it me or are they missing some of the cooler flavours that HC have done recently?
If you look at the valentines slection this year they had ones like Pistachio and peanut passion. Its a shame they haven't made them in to the next seasons collection.

Justin said...

You've done a fine job yet again Jimbo. Your HC reviews are without doubt the best on the net. I hope you got a good load of them coming like you say you do.

Anonymous said...

Jim one question - why are you sharing your hotel chocolat? Are you mad man lol.

Mark said...

I would much prefer to get a box full of these rather than loads of crappier quality big eggs. I don't think I have ever seen chocolate eggs be so cheap than they have been selling them this year. I saw you saying the other day that they were doing buy 3 for one on mars eggs. Thats mental. I hope I get quality over quantity this year.

Jess said...

Oh what a surprise lol. I don't doubt you Jim but Hotel Chocolat just score so high all the time. A small part of me just wants to see them get a rubbish score for once just to prove they are human lol.

Nigel said...

Hey J

Lucky lucky lucky Manure!!!!!! How do you guys always do it? You always score at the death and when it most matters. I would say that it was an endearing characteristic, but as a Liverpool fan it more makes me want to tear my hair out lol.

As for these chocolates Im half tempted to get some of these on order for mothers day and not waite until easter. They look like the sort of thing my mum would enjoy and I know she would be to polite not to offer them around so I would almost certainly get to try some.

Cheers

ps. whilst I remember I want to thank you for running the latest competition and making it open to Irish based readers. I just wanted to make sure it doesn't go unsaid, I'm sure all your irish readers are very grateful m8.

Connor said...

These are definitely one of the coolest looking products they have made for a long time.

I thought that a lot of their chocolates recently have been very predictable (heart shapes for valentines etc etc), but these 'quail' eggs are a nice little angle for easter. Well done hotel chocolat.

Henry said...

How big are these eggs? Mini egg size? Creme Egg size? Sorry but its hard to tell from your photos today.

Nick said...

Lol just so I can beat ol' Richy boy to it. These cost £9 on the website everyone.

Out of interest does anyone know how the store prices compare to the online ones? I have always thought that they would be more expensive instore but I've never been to one to see if this is actually true.

Carla said...

Ohhhh hc why did you have to put dark chocolate ones in here :( If they were milk or white chocolate instead this would be nigh on perfection. The only one I wouldnt want is the whiskey one.

Robyn said...

The only additional filling I want to see them try is a coconut one. I can't recall ever seem them attempt such a thing.

Kels said...

Brill review and its great knowing we have loads more of them to come soon. I look forward to seeing the next few before Easter comes around.

Linda said...

I dont often see the value of buying my kids anything from hotel chocolat but those tiddly pot eggs are just way to cute. As I said I normally just save the good stuff for me and my partner, the kids will eat anything branded with the word chocolate, they aren't as fussy as we are.

Tina said...

WOOOOOOOP!
Sorry I only just saw the competition for the kit kats. YAYS!. Im entering right now. To Twitter I go :) :) :)

Julie said...

You just have to stop posting these Hotel Chocolat reviews, I can hear my credit card whimper each time you do.

Chris said...

Quality review jim. You make some of these way too tempting to ignore. I think I will be buying a pack of these closer to easter.
thanks.
p.s. were you as annoyed as me about terry getting made england captain again.

Mysterio6_19 said...

I said this last week and it just looks even truer

HOTEL CHOCOLAT > ALL ELSE

HC FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

That vanilla truffle looks like it has the nicest filling ever. Nom nom nom.

Duncan said...

Yet another cool Hotel Chocolat review Jim thanks so much mate.
When I read the opening sentence I thought we were going to get one that got over nine but I sorta see why it hasn't just made it. If they had not put those plain milk and dark chocolate eggs in there I think you could probably have made the selection score ten which would have boosted it the end score to over nine. At least they know how to improve it now lol.

Louise said...

What else have you been sent to review from the easter chocs?

Ian said...

I know you only just started that japanese kit kat giveaway but is there any chance of you doing something similar for HC any time soon? I assure you it would make your site really popular.

Ryan said...

If you like trying all sorts of different flavours then I can see how this would appeal but I myself know what I like so would prefer to just pick a few of them and get more if you know what I mean.

What would be well good of them to do would be if they let you select a customised box online like an egg 'pick and mix' of sorts. Lol I should have kept that schtum and sold them they idea.

Lewis said...

Thanks Jim. I was hoping to see a review of these but wasn't expecting it as soon as this. I think a little trip to Hotel Choc could be in order soon.

Wendy said...

You dont mention this much in your reviews ever but the thing I like about Hotel Chocolat chocolate the most is the way that it melts like butter when you eat it.

Its always so smooth, it puts the likes of galaxy to shame.

Lauren said...

What a beautiful selection of chocolates. I love the name also lol, its quite clever isnt it.

Danielle said...

I think I would have preferred less flavours with the more popular ones included twice. Its nice to get a wide variety but I have a few favourites I can see in here + a few that don't take my fancy. I guess the difficulty with that is that everyone has different preferences so it would be hard to tell which ones to make most of hmmmm :-/

Vhari said...

Whats with the groovey pink chart today Jim? Lol it looks well funny =]

My faves from this would defo be the fruity white choc ones. They look so pretty I would almost be sad to eat them =]

Roxy said...

Yum yum - the review of these lush eggs made my tummy rumble Jim!! The blueberry egg sounds totally amaaazing - I'm a big fan of the blueberries full stop! Not so keen on whisky but am sure I could find someone willing to eat it for me ;). Great review dude x

Ana said...

I find this to be a really nice selection as I'm a fan of boozy and fruity chocolates.

One thing that I find interesting is that you say the brownie is a milk chocolate egg - I would have been sure it was done with dark chocolate given that it looks much darker than the whisky and the vanilla eggs. One thing you don't say is whether the filling really felt like a brownie. A lot of times, "brownie" chocolates don't manage to get the brownie feel right. I'd like to think this one does...

Not connected to today's post, but still about Easter chocolates: Milka have a cocoa version of the Loffel Ei Egg this year.

@Henry: The whole box is 145g, so they are about 12g each (quail egg sized).

Phillip said...

I think Ryan is on to a winning idea here. Being able to pick the flavours that you want would be tons better than just get lumbered with a load that you don't really want.

Perhaps they could think about doing it next year or something?

Rodzilla said...

I really like the new packaging. They all sound great, but I think I'd like to try the blueberry the most.

Selina said...

What a lovely little idea they have come up with here. I dont see why people want to me so boring and only have the flavours that they have tried before. Its all about trying new things if you ask me. I like it that they just didn't keep them the same to last years.

Richard said...

@Nick oi you cheeky git :) Lol I think we all know that I think Hotel Chocolat is over expensive but I did expect to see a higher price tag on these here.

I wouldn't mind trying them but I still wouldn't buy em.

Jim said...

Hi Everyone,

It looks like these Quail Eggs have chaught the eye of many of you today. I do indeed have many a Hotel Chocolat Easter product to get up on the site before it comes upon us all, but as I said in my review my family insisted that I get this one up straight away it was enjoyed so much.

A few of you have asked about what other products I have been sent but I really don't want to spoil the posts. If you have any specific products you want to see just drop me a note and I will make sure I get a sample sent along so I cover all bases.

Reading through all the comments today the one that stood out for me came from 'RYAN'. As many of you have followed up and said I think the idea of being able to pick your own Quail egg selection would be fantastic. I can imagine it would be a bit of a logistical nightmare their end though, imagine all the different packing and labour costs etc. I think we still need to remember these guys are still a pretty small entity in the grand scheme of things. Like some of you say, this could be perhaps an avenue they could investigate later on in the development of their company.

Thanks again for the nice words about the photography. The old man will be pleased with his handy work again. It was a real family effort this post :D

ANDREW - Well aware mothers day is first chap. Look out next Monday for my mothers day selection box review.

PAUL - The menu is thankfully 100% accurate this year.

GOLDEN - Indeed it was a shame it lacked the pistachio & peanut flavours. They could have been good alternatives to the plainer ones I agree.

ANON - I share because I care :D Haha I have to eat a lot of chocolate - its always good to get second opinions on these things aswell.

NIGEL - Quality always shines through chap :D We often score against teams in the last few minutes because they finally succumb to all the pressure we put on them. I still think we are in a great position to win the league. You must be happy with Luis Suarez. Boy what a signing you have there.

HENRY - They are the size of normal truffles chap. Mouthful size!

NICK - No idea how the instore prices compare chap. As I get samples I never venture into their stores myself. Can someone give Nigel some guidance on this?

ROBYN - Indeed I think a coconut truffle would be great. Make it happen HC

TINA - Make sure you get your entry in then. My inbox is exploding with entries at the moment.

CHRIS - I don't want to start a rant but I think John Terry is a complete disgrace. Lets face it though, most of the footballers are. I'm awfully cynical when it comes to those lot now.

IAN - I will make some enquiries about an HC competition for Easter. I can't promise anything but they are normally keen.

RYAN - I think your idea is fantastic. See above.

VHARI - I thought I would mix it up a little with the colour of the chart :D DO you approve or do you want me just to stick to the usual colours?

ROXY/RODDY - The blueberry is the one that is sticking out for a lot of people eh!? Perhaps they could do with making a slab of it!

ANA - Those Milka EI eggs are seriously great. I think you should send me over some to review again ... I have to double check these things of course :D

Thanks for the comments today everyone. I updated the news post earlier with an article from the Daily Mail about the higher priced Easter Eggs this year ... check it out, I'm not sure I agree with it myself.

I hope you all noticed the competition launched on the site this weekend! Be sure to get your entries in.

The best flavours to me look like the blueberry, strawberry, vanilla, caramel and caramel praline.

The rest I'm just so-so about. It must have been good to get a score like that. I think thats the biggest I've seen you rate something for a long time. I sure wont be sharing if I get my own one of these.

Ganesh said...

Geeze Louise that vanilla one looks remarkable. How do they keep the filling light coloured when its surrounded by chocolate? This is one going straight on my Easter list. Thanks Jim.

Lot-O-Choc said...

Oh yum, these all look so tasty, I love Hotel Chocolat's range, I agree that I'm not a huge fan of alcoholic chocolates either but their pralines always hit the spot, some of the nicest ive had!

James said...

So many of these sound terrific, I don't think I would know where to start LOL. I especially like the look of the vanilla truffle and caramel praline. Its a shame to see they aren't doing a 'double dozen' selection of pralines. I think that would help ease my selection crisis.

Anonymous said...

@Ryan man that idea about creating your own batch and choosing your own flavours is a well good one. I would be all over that if they went ahead with it. DO IT HC!

Michael said...

Another hotel chocolat success, oh what a surprise =) =)
Do you get bored saying that they are so great all the time? Lol I prefer the Thorntons reviews when there is always a chance of you going off on a rant of yours lol. They can be funny sometimes.

Craig said...

If anything I would say they have tried to pack too many flavours in to this pack. I think it would have been better if they picked a few that they knew would be well popular like the praline and then had that one twice. The vanilla truffle also looks like one that having two of wouold have been good. Lol I say this but I don't know which I would sacrifice out of the flavours.

Tina said...

Last year when I went in to one of their shops I got a free sample of the caramel filled egg from a lovely young man serving behind the counter. I ended up liking it so much that I bought the entire box with all the rest of them in lol. They certainly know how to sell their chocolates when they get you in their stores.

Daisy said...

Booooo hotel chocolat. Take your alchy truffles and take them far away from me. I hope they do an alcohol free version of these. Well all know that they put way too much booze in them. They always have done.

They rest do look v v yummy. The white chocolate ones especially capture my eye.

Dx

Anonymous said...

Personally I don't think this selection is as clever as it could of been. For instance, if you don't like white chocolate, then you don't have a chance of having any fruit flavoured ones.
Also it seems like it is missing some pretty obvious flavours like orange, coffee, even almonds are represented by anything. I think the score is over inflated.

Lucy said...

Oh god its way too tempting just buying myself some of these now. Is it sad buying chocolate for yourself chocolates for Easter :/ Its not something I have done before but my parents wouldn't have a clue how to use a computer to order them.

Anonymous said...

You have to run a hotel chocolat compo for easter. Its tradition, I remember entering in last yrs.

Karen said...

I really wish they wouldn't put the alocohol ones in :( I know people are just going to think that this is me being a wimp but I find ones like the rum and whisky are far too strong for me. I dont mind the drinks as much, its more that they overtake the chocolates flavour wise. It wouldn't put me off buying these, though I know as a matter of fact that I would prefer it without.

Ed said...

Jim just do us all a favour and review hotel chocolat every day lol. I dont know why you should waste time with any other chocolate makers. HC are the best by the a country mile. I do like your other reviews but the hotel chocolat ones are always the most special. I look forward to your next. Can we assume hotel chocolat mondays are back on?

Patrick said...

Im going to go out on a whim here and propose you might have over scored these. Do you really think they justify a nine for selection when they have those two boring ones in their (choc truffle and choc brownie). Those both look like lazy ones which could have been much better if they were something else like raspberry, coffee etc... you get my drift.

Michael said...

The stripes to identify the eggs are loads better than the blobs they used in last years box. I don't know what it is but they just look better I think.

Hollie said...

I'll be happy with any reviews you post Jim :) They are all so exceptionally detailed.

Jim said...

GANESH - The vanilla does look rather good doesn't it. No idea how they keep it white. They must pipe the fillings in last or something.

LOT-o-CHOC - Indeed you can always rely on their pralines cant you.

MICHAEL - I don't think I will ever get bored handing out praise. If it was the other way round I would be feel less comfortable about moaning all the time.

TINA - Haha you got 'done' by one of the instore samples. We have all been there dont worry.

DAISY - Surely you know someone that will happily eat your alcohol flavoured ones for you? :D

LUCY - No way is it 'sad' to buy chocolates for yourself. Half the time its the only way of making sure you get what you really want.

ANON - I will see what I can do about an Easter competition for Hotel Chocolat.

KAREN - Dont worry there are plenty of HC Easter products this year that are alcohol free.

ED - For the time being yes Hotel Chocolat Mondays would appear to be back on the agenda! I trust this is good news for everyone?

Thanks all

JIM
